Statement from Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team
It has been an intense and emotional campaign, that started over three years ago - with a blank sheet on which a new class of boats took shape, with a new and technologically advanced hull concept - and ended just a few days ago, after over three months of spectacular and thrilling regattas.

Being the lead actors in the limelight of this adventure, up till the very end, makes us incredibly proud of the work done by the entire team; this competition is not only a sporting challenge, it represents the technology, creativity and values of an entire nation, which we are proud to represent.

There have been many memorable moments to look back on, from the very difficult move to Auckland to the victory of the PRADA Cup, earned after competing against such strong teams as NYYC American Magic and INEOS Team UK.

In the final of the America's Cup Match the races were fought until the very end, and some of these will remain etched in our collective memory for the spectacular show and the close competition.

Defeat is never easy to accept, but this is sport, this is sailing and this is the America's Cup. Sometimes it is brutal, but you have to accept the result and learn from mistakes. If you don't give up you have never really lost, and this is the essence that characterizes Luna Rossa.

We are happy to have gotten this far and even more excited at the prospect of coming back stronger, in the hope that the Cup will continue to enclose the spirit that has distinguished it throughout all these years, making it the most coveted and fascinating sailing trophy of all times.

A team like Luna Rossa, with a great history behind it, will continue to honour those who have supported us, from sponsors, to partners, to the millions of fans who have made us feel their closeness even from the other side of the world. It is also thanks to their passion and enthusiasm that we have come this far.

We have proved that we were a worthy challenger, with important values both on land and on the water.

As a team we want to thank New Zealand and the city of Auckland, and the Mana Whenua community, who welcomed us and allowed us all to enjoy the privilege of living these months in a healthy environment, free from Covid, and allowing the competitions to take place safely.

We look forward to returning to racing on the AC75s in the next edition of the America's Cup.

56th Congressional Cup dates set
Congressional Cup Chairman Chris Macy has announced the 2021 event will be postponed to mid-September in light of the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery. "We look forward to celebrating a return to the glory of Congressional Cup racing," Macy said, when this legendary match race regatta returns.

An official World Championship event of the World Match Racing Tour and a Grade One competition, the Congressional Cup has been hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club since 1965 and is known as the 'grandfather of match racing' and pioneer of on-the-water umpiring that is the standard in yacht racing today.

Organizers plan to follow the traditional program with the world's top-ranked skippers from around the globe competing for the esteemed Congressional Cup trophy.

The revised schedule will commence with the Ficker Cup qualifier Sept. 10 to 12, to determine the final two entries to Congressional Cup. Then, on Wednesday Sept. 15, the thrill of premier-level match racing returns to the waters off Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier for five exciting days culminating with finals Sunday Sept. 19. Racing commences at roughly noon each day and is held in a fleet of identical 37-foot Catalina keelboats, which guarantee a focus on skill and tactics.

Robline Rigging Service - Eyesplice in a Doublebraid
Some of you might love doing this on their own, others rather give their ropes to a specialist. No matter what group you belong to we have here a small YouTube tutorial on how a double braided Eyesplice is properly done. No matter if mooring line or halyard, the principle is the same. We used the well-known Robline Sirius 500 as a sample since this is a very common type of double braided rope on the market.

Have fun watching and if this seems a little too hard but you still would like to have your rope spliced just contact your local dealer or directly our rigging service:

Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini set the new Monaco to Porto Cervo multihull record
Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70's team arrived in Porto Cervo at 9:09 38" on 21st March, setting a new Monaco to Porto Cervo multihull record, sailing 195 miles in 7 hours, 50 minutes and 44 seconds. The Italian crew's record is only 2 minutes and 47 seconds better than the one set by MOD70 Phaedo3 in 2016 with Brian Thompson (7 hours, 53 minutes and 31 seconds and an average speed of 24,71 knots).

The Italian trimaran crossed the starting line off Monaco at 1:18 54" on Sunday 21st March and picked up speed towards Corsica. Soldini commented, "At first we were sailing really fast with 25/30 knots of north- easterly wind, reaching up to 38 knots of speed, then the wind dropped before the Strait of Bonifacio for a couple of hours. Luckily, the wind got stronger again and we started speeding up in the strait. It's been really incredible, we crossed the finish line sailing at 35 knots! We knew this would be a risky window because of the light wind near Corsica, but we wanted to try anyway and we did our best, pushing Maserati Multi 70 to the maximum, and we did it - we're all very happy, and exhausted!"

The record will be ratified by the World Sailing Speed Racing Council in the following days. Aboard Maserati Multi 70 with Giovanni Soldini was Vittorio Bissaro, an Italian Olympic sailor and Nacra17 World Champion, who had already raced with the trimaran's crew on many previous occasions. Also with them were Guido Broggi, Carlos Hernandez Robayna, Oliver Herrera Perez and Matteo Soldini.

Maserati Multi 70 was back in the water at the end of February, after almost four months in the shipyard. In the next weeks Soldini and his crew will be training and testing the latest improvements made to the trimaran.

In the next days, the Italian Team will set sail towards England, looking for new records.

A Winter Series For The Summer
Now is the winter of our discontent... which is why the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series is being extended into this spring and summer. With Covid forcing the cancellation or postponement of all but one of the scheduled events, the results of the successfully run Datchet Flyer last December do not add up to a series worthy of the name.

So series co-organisers Andy Rice and Simon Lovesey have agreed with title sponsor Seldén Mast to continue to run the series through to a concluding event at Rutland Water, the rescheduled John Merricks Tiger Trophy on the last weekend of August.

"This is probably the first time a winter series will be taking place during the warm months of the year," said Andy. "But the focus for me and Simon has always been to maximise participation in dinghy racing by whatever means we can. With so many summer regattas and national championships being cancelled already, and the ever-present problem of too many of the smaller classes trying to organise single-class open meetings where they can't even guarantee a turnout of 20 boats, we're looking to offer a more sustainable option with the multi-class handicap events throughout the spring and summer."

Simon has been spearheading the continuation of sailing wherever possible within Covid guidelines, via his non-for-profit organisation RestartSailing which he established during National Lockdown #1 in spring 2020. Simon said: "We are working with sailing clubs that are keen to make things happen wherever it is possible to do so in a safe, Covid-compliant manner. If any club or class wants us to help them put on a sustainable, profitable, fun and safe event, we're ready to talk with them."

So if you want to find out more, either as a competing sailor, class or sailing club, please contact Simon on:

SailGP and Kuehne+Nagel set the course for Net Zero Carbon events logistics
SailGP today announced Kuehne+Nagel as its official logistics partner for the next three seasons, through 2024. Both partners aim to set a new standard for major event logistics, minimizing the carbon footprint of the sail racing league's transport within their climate positive strategy. As part of its Net Zero Carbon program, Kuehne+Nagel is also pursuing its own goal of being completely CO2 neutral by 2030, including transport emissions from its suppliers (Scope 3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol).

Kuehne+Nagel will work with SailGP to support the global logistics of its multi-continent race calendar with industry-leading sustainable shipping methods including alternative fuels. In addition, Kuehne+Nagel gives the league full visibility on all shipping-related emissions through its Seaexplorer platform. The tool will enable SailGP to select more efficient transport routes for future seasons that emit substantially less carbon. For the shipping emissions that can't be removed or reduced, Kuehne+Nagel will offset the remaining carbon footprint via verified gold standard offsets. Combined, the measures will ensure a 100 percent CO2 neutral supply chain.

Britain's Round the Island Race Celebrates 90 Years on July 3
Round the Island Race Entries for the world-famous Round the Island Race opened at 00.01 19 March. Organised by the much-respected Island Sailing Club, the Round the Island has always been one of the UK's largest participation sporting events and regularly attracts over 1,500 boats and thousands of sailors. This year the race will be held on 3 July and celebrates its 90th anniversary, and with so many high-profile events being cancelled, the Round the Island is being tipped as one of the biggest events to be staged since the UK's first lockdown a year ago.

One of the unique attractions of the race is its even-handedness and the opportunity for Olympic and World champion sailors to compete on the same racecourse with amateurs, families and club sailors of all ages. Whilst the majority of the boats will simply enjoy the challenge of getting all the way round, there will be many teams aiming to beat the existing course records. The current monohull record continues to be held by Mike Slade on ICAP Leopard, who in the near-perfect conditions of 2013 posted an elapsed time of 3 hours 43 minutes and 50 seconds. The multihull class, introduced in 1961, generally achieves even faster times, as shown in 2017 when Ned Collier Wakefield's Concise10 flew round in just 2 hours 22 minutes and 23 seconds.

The ethos of a 'Race for All' continues at pace this year with the first Windeler Cup competition to set sail after the main fleet departs from Cowes, allowing small keelboat racers from the Daring, Dragon, Etchells, Flying Fifteen, Mermaid, Redwing, Sunbeam, Swallow, Sonar, Squib, RS Elite, Victory and XOD classes to join in the fun with an exciting Solent Race. Also, the race weekend is extended to welcome competitors from the rowing and kitesurfing worlds, who will enjoy their own Round the Island on the Thursday and Friday before the main sailing race on Saturday 3 July.

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta Cancellation
We were hoping that we could all go sailing but unfortunately the covid virus and the protocols have made this impossible.

The Chairman of the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Carlo Falcone and the committee have decided to cancel the 2021 ACYR and hope that everything will go back to normal in 2022. For classic yachts already in Antigua, we are hoping to hold an informal sailing only weekend at the end of April this year and more information on that will follow if it is viable.

We look forward to welcoming you all back to Antigua next winter.

AkzoNobel sponsors Antarctic mission in aid of sustainability strategy
AkzoNobel, the Dutch paints and coatings multinational, is sponsoring an international mission in which a manned oceanographic platform will drift around Antarctica collecting climate data, starting in December 2023.

The zero-emission project is the brainchild of French explorer and environmentalist Jean-Louis Etienne. The 100-meter tall Polar Pod' will be propelled by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, a vast reserve of marine biodiversity.

AkzoNobel will sponsor the 1,000-ton platform for the next five years, from its construction through to the end of its three-year mission. CEO Thierry Vanlancker says AkzoNobel goes "to the ends of the earth to help our customers" become more sustainable. The Antarctic mission dovetails with AkzoNobel's "People. Planet. Paint." sustainability strategy that aims to ultimately become a zero-waste company.

The Polar Pod can accommodate eight people in six months of autonomy and will be shadowed by a supply vessel as it drifts across the southern reaches of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It will be towed horizontally to its first study area. There, it will be tilted upright by filling ballast tanks with seawater. Most of the upright structure will be submerged.

The data it will collect will be digested by oceanographers, climatologists and biologists at 43 research institutions in 12 nations.

Studies will focus on air/ocean exchange measurements related to CO2, wave dynamics; plankton collection and evaluation of the impact of acidification; acoustic inventory of marine fauna; validation of satellite measurements and aerial observation of marine life. -- Robert Wielaard

* From Butch Dalrymple Smith in La Ciotat, France:

Regarding the announcement of Royal Yacht Squadron Racing being the challenger of record for the 37th America's Cup, I always thought that the only organisation that can challenge for the Auld Mug is a bona fide yacht club whose annual regatta is held on an arm of the sea. The Royal Yacht Squadron would certainly qualify, but a limited private company such as Royal Yacht Squadron Racing does not seem to meet the requirement. They don't have members and they don't have an annual regatta. Or am I missing something?
