Joint statement from INEOS TEAM UK and Royal Yacht Squadron Racing
INEOS TEAM UK and Royal Yacht Squadron Racing are pleased to confirm that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, on behalf of the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand, accepted their Notice of Challenge for the 37th America's Cup (AC37) and have become the Challenger of Record for AC37.

The Challenge letter was signed on 17th March 2021 onboard the yacht IMAGINE, by Bertie Bicket, Chairman of Royal Yacht Squadron Racing and accepted by Aaron Young, Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Club as Emirates Team New Zealand crossed the finish line to win the America's Cup for the fourth time.

In addition, INEOS have confirmed they will continue to back Sir Ben Ainslie's team to win sport's oldest international trophy, giving much needed continuity, the cornerstone of every successful America's Cup team. It will be the first time a British team has competed in three consecutive Cup cycles since Sir Thomas Lipton and the Royal Ulster YC bids between 1899 to 1930.

INEOS TEAM UK Skipper and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said: "INEOS TEAM UK are committed to working alongside Emirates Team New Zealand and our respective yacht clubs to continue the development of this historic event. The introduction of the AC75 class of yacht has proven to be a transformative moment in the history of the America's Cup and will be the bedrock of a really bright future."

Bertie Bicket, Chairman of Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, who has been in Auckland, New Zealand for the duration of the 36th America's Cup said: "We are delighted to be embarking on our third successive America's Cup challenge with Sir Ben Ainslie and INEOS, as the Challenging Yacht Club for the 37th America's Cup. We look forward to working with all parties and will strive to continue the tradition and history of this great sporting event."

Challenge Accepted
Emirates Team New Zealand is pleased to confirm that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has accepted a Notice of Challenge for the 37th America's Cup (AC37) from the Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, represented by INEOS TEAM UK, which will act as the Challenger of Record for AC37.

"The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron have received and accepted a challenge for the 37th America's Cup from our long-standing British friends at Royal Yacht Squadron Racing." Said Aaron Young - RNZYS Commodore. "It is great to once again have the RYSR involved, given they were the first yacht club that presented this trophy over 170 years ago, which really started the legacy of the America's Cup. Along with Emirates Team New Zealand, we look forward to working through the details of the next event with them. "

A Protocol Governing AC37 will be published within eight months including the provisions outlined in this release.

- It has been agreed the AC75 Class shall remain the class of yacht for the next two America's Cup cycles, and agreement to this is a condition of entry.

- The teams will be restricted to building only one new AC75 for the next event.

- A single Event Authority will be appointed to be responsible for the conduct of all racing and the management of commercial activities relating to AC37.

- The Defender and the Challenger of Record, will be investigating and agreeing a meaningful package of campaign cost reduction measures including measures to attract a higher number of Challengers and to assist with the establishment of new teams.

- A new Crew Nationality Rule will require 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country the team's yacht club as at 19 March 2021 or to have been physically present in that country (or, acting on behalf of such yacht club in Auckland, the venue of the AC36 Events) for two of the previous three years prior to 18 March 2021. As an exception to this requirement, there will be a discretionary provision allowing a quota of non-nationals on the race crew for competitors from "Emerging Nations".

- There are a number of different options but it is intended that the Venue for the Match will be determined within six months and the dates of racing announced in the Protocol, if not before.

"The 37th America's Cup effectively starts the moment the team crossed the finish line on Wednesday afternoon," said Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton.

When three hulls win - Neel Trimarans
Neel Trimarans Neel's fast ocean going trimarans are becoming an increasingly familiar sight around the great cruising destinations and with good reason... not all of them immediately obvious

How do you judge the success of an ocean cruising yacht? You can tell a lot from where you see them and where you don't. It's also instructive to look at the builder's order book. If you buy one now, how long will you have to wait for delivery? Another indicator is how well (or poorly) they hold their value on the secondhand market. By any of these measures, Neel Trimarans is absolutely nailing it.

You'll often see Neel tris anchored in remote parts of the Hebrides and far-flung atolls of the South Pacific but they're rarely seen in crowded, mainstream cruising destinations like the Ionian, the Virgin Islands or the Solent. Depending on which model of Neel tri you want, you'll probably have to wait at least eight months and possibly up to two years. And a survey of brokerage websites suggests that there isn't a great deal of difference between the asking price of a two-year-old Neel and the cost of a new one.

Statement from New York Yacht Club Commodore
On behalf of the membership of the New York Yacht Club, I want to congratulate the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand for winning the 36th America's Cup. It was a memorable competition, sailed in the remarkable AC75 yachts, and it reinforced why the America's Cup remains a singular trophy in the world of sport. I also want to thank the people of New Zealand, led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, for successfully hosting this competition during such a challenging time. I was privileged to be in New Zealand to witness it in person.

Among the most unique aspects of the America's Cup is that the competition is reborn after every victory, when the newly minted Defender and the Challenger of Record form a partnership to craft the rules, known as the Protocol, for the next match. It's a tremendous responsibility to represent all potential challengers. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the Royal Yacht Squadron hold the future of our sport's premier trophy in the palm of their collective hands.

As part of the New York Yacht Club's return to this great competition after two decades away, we spent significant time developing a draft Protocol that would blend the history, tradition and idiosyncrasies that makes the America's Cup so special with the commercial tools and non-partisan governance required to succeed in the world of modern sport. When our challenger, New York Yacht Club American Magic, was eliminated from the competition, we shared this Protocol with every competitor in the 36th America's Cup and a number of key Cup stakeholders. It was very well received by nearly everyone who read it. We are encouraged to see that, according to the press release from Emirates Team New Zealand, the Protocol for the 37th America's Cup will incorporate at least some of the tenets of our vision, including stronger nationality rules, a commitment to multiple cycles in the same boat, a more powerful event authority and cost-reduction measures.

However, a Deed of Gift match off the Isle of Wight, as reported by the New Zealand Herald to be under consideration, would be a huge step in the wrong direction. The two previous Deed of Gift matches, in 1988 and 2010, were distinct low points in the history of the America's Cup. Regardless of the conditions, the New York Yacht Club will not support a Deed of Gift match or an America's Cup competition that, due to the schedule and rules for competition, is effectively open to only the Defender and Challenger of Record.

The AC75 is a remarkable boat that will only produce closer and more exciting competition in future cycles. As the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a thirst for the fusion of competition, tradition and social interaction that the America's Cup can provide like no other sporting event. With the right schedule and match conditions, there is every expectation we would see a competition to rival Perth in 1987, Auckland in 2003 and Valencia in 2007. Each of those America's Cup cycles drew 10 or more teams to compete for the Auld Mug and the significant commercial interest necessary to support such a grand event. To waste this confluence of opportunity on a two-team event, to potentially once again plunge the competition into the New York State Courts, is not in the best interests of the America's Cup or the sport of sailing.

Our passion and commitment to the America's Cup are as much a part of the New York Yacht Club now as a century ago. We can't thank enough the Principals of American Magic—Hap Fauth, Doug DeVos and Roger Penske—and the more than 500 members of the Club who contributed to the campaign for the opportunity to re-engage with the competition our Club founded more than 150 years ago and successfully defended 25 times. We are hopeful that the rules for the next Match will allow the Club to compete once again, and will put the competition on the road toward regaining its place alongside the Olympics and the World Cup of Football as one of the world's most popular and successful sporting events.

Sincerely,
Christopher J. Culver, Commodore

Damien Guillou and PRB Enter The Golden Globe Race 2022
Damien Guillou is preparing to take up an extraordinary challenge under the colors of PRB. At 38, the Breton will live alone at sea for more than 200 days for a round the world nonstop, without assistance and without modern means of communication, the Golden Globe Race.

It was during the Vendée Globe village, last October, that the project began to germinate. Then a member of the IMOCA PRB technical team, Damien Guillou talks with Jean-Jacques Laurent, President of the Vendée SME. The latter lets Damien know that he wants to realign a PRB boat on the Golden Globe Race and that he is looking for a skipper. Concentrated on the preparation of the 60 feet, the Breton hears but does not project himself immediately. "When Jean-Jacques Laurent told me that, we were in the home stretch to prepare for IMOCA so I didn't really react, even though this proposal obviously appealed to me. Following this discussion, I took the time to find out about the dates of the race and the idea gradually gained momentum. I was at this stage still in personal reflection. Afterwards I took the step to talk about it to my wife and I also discussed it with Paul Meilhat and Anthony Marchand, two childhood friends who know me well. It was only after having had their points of view that I returned to Jean-Jacques Laurent to inform him that I really wanted to embark on this project, he then replied Go! "

The monohull which perfectly meets the strict criteria of the Golden Globe Race was built on plans drawn before 1988 (1980). The sailboat will be under construction for about two months as indicated by Damien: "We are still awaiting the Italian authorizations for the exceptional transport which will be done by road. The health context complicates things a bit, but this should unblock soon. As soon as we have received the boat, it will go into the yard for a total refit. For the moment, it is in cruise configuration. The objective will be to put it in race mode and that requires significant changes. We are planning a relaunch at the end of June so that I will sail all summer to take it in hand and start qualifying for 2000 miles at the beginning of September. "

While waiting, Damien Guillou has started learning the sextant... An essential first step for this Golden Globe Race.

Hamble Warming Pan at Easter - Saturday & Sunday 3rd-4th April
Hamble River Sailing Club's 2021 Hamble Warming Pan is scheduled for the Easter weekend with junior dinghy class racing on Saturday followed on Sunday by the 59th edition of the club's famous 'open' featuring all non-trapeze dinghies rated PY 970-1244, RS400s and Foxers.

Racing will be organised under RYA COVID guidelines and this year entry is limited to boats from the local area. Three back-to-back races are planned on both days with 1200 & 1300 first start times respectively. All junior classes are welcome, Oppies, Toppers, Fevas etc.

On Sunday, racing will be organised in fast and slow fleets under Portsmouth Yardstick handicapping, plus RS400 and Foxers. Other classes mustering four boats or more will receive a class prize and those with eight boats or more may have a separate start.

An Early-Bird entry rate will be available online with late entry available on the day. Full details and the Notice of Race can be found at the website - at www.hrsc.org.uk

First run in 1962, the Hamble Warming Pan was the season opener, with new designs in the highly competitive Merlin Rocket and National 12 classes launched and tested for the first time and these classes became the bedrock of this great event.

"The club has always enjoyed running the Warming Pan and now the inclusion of junior sailors reflects the resurgence of dinghy sailing at HRSC. The nine Hamble men who founded the club in 1919 'to encourage the sport of small boat sailing and racing' would surely approve!"

18ft Skiffs Queen of the Harbour
18ft Skiffs Queen of the Harbour Sydney Harbour: In a thrilling finish, Tatiana Cardoso became the 18ft Skiff Queen of the Harbour when The Kitchen Maker-Caesarstone team of Jordan Girdis, Lachlan Doyle and Cameron McDonald came back strongly over the final lap of the course to take out the annual event on Sydney Harbour today.

The Kitchen Maker-Caesarstone took line honours by just 11secs from Sophie O'Loughlin, Simon Nearn, Ed Powys and Brandon Buyink on appliancesonline.com.au, with Yandoo (Ombeline Even, John Winning, Fang Warren and Mike Kennedy) only 6secs further back in third place.

Noakes Blue (Sandra Garlie, Yvette Heritage) finished in fourth place ahead of Finport Finance (Elizabeth Dallen, Keagan York), and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Sally Colley, Jim Colley) in sixth place.

It was also a great victory for the long-term sponsor, The Kitchen Maker, which has now registered three victories in the last four Queen of the Harbour races.

India Howard won in 2017and Isabelle Quigley in 2019 as well as Tatiana's victory today.

Despite a number of sporting events being cancelled due to the bad weather over Sydney, the Australian 18 Footers League's fleet contested the annual race in a 16-24 knots North East wind.

With teams adding a female competitor to the regular three-man crew, the two lap event over a windward-and-return course, produced a close race on the first windward beat from the start off Clark Island to the top marks off Nielsen Park.

Our 2020-2021 Season has concluded, however you can keep up-to-date with all the latest information, follow all the club's racing and other club activities at all times: -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Chasing Rainbows
Photo by Sharon Green. Click on image for photo gallery.

Sharon Green 'Talk about chasing rainbows! My ongoing, eternal quest is to capture the 'Ultimate Sailing' image: the perfect composition, light, action, and angles. It's just like chasing rainbows: a seemingly elusive and implausible task, searching for that pot of gold at the end ... But sometimes - like this magical shot - it does happen!

The March feature photograph in the 2021 Ultimate Sailing calendar showcases the Melges IC37 Pacific Yankee sailing beneath a vibrant rainbow. It was taken off Hollywood Beach in Ft. Lauderdale as co-owners Drew Freides, Bill Ruh and crew were practicing for the Lauderdale Cup regatta.

I love this area because of the wind conditions, sea state and magnificent colors. The Gulf Stream hugs the coast here and that snaking river of warm water (traveling at 2 to 4mph!) shakes it up, and adds to the challenging tactics of the race! It is one of my favorite places to shoot and often delivers stunning calendar shots. -- Sharon Green

Re. Andrew Hurst & America's Cup

Well said Andrew. It was 'bloody amazing' for all ages.

* From Malcolm McKeag

In his excellent letter about the new era of AC competition Andrew Hurst (and he should know) speaks of "Talk of a 'new class of 90-footers racing in a different event'..." from the US, presumably because - again - that country didn't put up much of a showing this time around. (Personally, I thought their Canadian-led team really cracked it. Oh dear. Sorry.)

But hang on. Haven't we been here before? Wasn't there going to be a fine Corinthians-only event in a new(ish) class of (nearly) 90-footers on San Francisco bay? Thought-up by the usually sensible Tom Ehman as an alternative to the 'beach cat' regatta in Bermuda and enthusiastically supported by (nearly*) every America's Cup yachting writer, ex-participant and commentator over 70?

And didn't that go well!

(*PS. Please note: I said 'nearly'.)
