36th America's Cup Presented By Prada
No wind, No Race

Weather won the day on the Waitemata Harbour today on the fourth day of the 36th America's Cup presented by PRADA with the Race Committee forced to call off racing due to the lack of wind.

The scoreboard between Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and the best-of-13 series is still tied three apiece.

Auckland offered a spectacular sight on a day better suited to fishing and swimming for the 1300+ spectator boats gathered once again around Race Course A. The America's Cup Race Village packed with over 48.000 people, in the end left to rock out to The Feelers and Zed in the balmy Sunday evening.

The forecast for day number five is promising - ENE 10-15 knots, so teams have to set the re-set button as tomorrow looks set to deliver another tense day for sailors and spectators alike.

Races 7 & 8 will resume 15th of March at 4:15pm NZT weather permitting, with no possible start later than 6:00 pm NZT.

Smeg racing team is the 2021 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff champion!
Click on image for photo gallery.

JJ Giltinan The Smeg team of Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Trent Barnabas was unbeatable for the title of 2021 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff champion after yesterday's Race 8 of the championship, but today's final race on Sydney Harbour held more than enough interest to entertain patrons on the two club spectator ferries following the event.

Several teams were in contention for placings behind the Smeg team and a strong Southerly wind sweeping across the harbour was adding even more pressure to the fleet.

Smeg finished the championship on 19 points, followed by Yandoo Winning Group on 28, Noakesailing 36, Shaw and Partners Financial Services on 38, tech2 39 and Andoo on 43.

When Yandoo capsized off the southern end of Shark Island, tech2 regained the lead and continued to hold the lead over the next lap of the course, just ahead of Yandoo Winning Group.

Finport Finance and Smeg were engaged in a battle for third place before a capsize put the new champion Smeg team out of contention on the second spinnaker run.

The annual Queen of the Harbour race will be sailed next Sunday, March 21. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Two Title Defenses Secured On Final Day At Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta
An overwhelming display of dominance from defending champions Mateusz Kusznierewicz/Bruno Prada (POL) made Bacardi Cup history, as according to event knowledge, never before has a team recorded an all-win scorecard. Today Kusznierewicz/Prada wrapped up their assault to defend their title by claiming two more race wins to walk away with the 94th Bacardi Cup on a 15 point advantage.

In the J/70 Travis Odenbach and his team on 'Honey Badger' ended the day where they started in 1st overall, whilst in the Melges 24 defending Champion Bora Gulari on 'New England Ropes' stepped up his pace to triumph on the podium.

The wind steadily dropped throughout the week and racing unfolded today in a lighter 6-10 knot breeze and fairly flat water across the two Biscayne Bay race courses.

Kusznierewicz/Prada made achieving their second consecutive Bacardi Cup title look easy, but despite their record breaking scorecard the race track didn't always go their way, as twice they had to play catch up to secure their wins! Not today though, as they again led from start to finish in what can only be described as an unsurpassable event for the pair. To win with a win as a discard is simply once in a lifetime stuff.

Pressure & How Teams are Coping + Day 4 Round up
No one expected a scoreline of three-all after three days racing in the 36th America's Cup. It's easy to make the case that this is the most evenly matched America's Cup in the 170 year history of the event. And that brings pressure, stacks of it. INEOS TEAM UK crew member David 'Freddie' Carr explains what its like, what he sees and how the teams are coping with it. Plus, our quick review of Day 4.

Medal Races finished and the 470 World Championships come to a close
The 2021 470 World Championships have officially come to a close with the completion of the final medal race on Saturday. A second-place finish in the medal race promoted Stu McNay (Providence, RI) and Dave Hughes (Miami, Fla.) to a fifth-place finish overall, one higher than yesterday's sixth place ranking. U.S. Coast Guard LTJG Nikole 'Nikki' Barnes (St. Thomas, USVI) and Lara Dallman-Weiss (Hugo, Minn.) placed sixth in the medal race, sustaining their seventh overall ranking from the qualifying series.

In qualifying for her first Olympic Games, Barnes is also the first USCG active-duty officer to qualify for the Olympics in any sport. She feels the leadership skills she is learning from her Olympic campaign will translate well to her duties as an officer, enhancing the skill set of the service. Due to her Covid work for the Coast Guard last spring, she earned enough qualifications for a promotion to Lieutenant this May, all while pursuing an active Olympic campaign.

12mRs to sail 1000nm to World Championship in Helsinki
In an historic first, a large fleet of Vintage 12mR yachts will sail upwards of 1000 nautical miles to compete at the 12mR World Championship in Helsinki, Finland from August 14- 22, 2021.

Hosted by Finland's premiere yacht club Nyländska Jaktklubben, NJK, at least a dozen 12mRs are expected to arrive on their own keels from Germany, Denmark and Sweden to join Finland's Blue Marlin (FIN-1) and challenge Italy's reigning World Champion, Nyala (US-12).

Many of the yachts will depart in company from Flensburg, Germany in mid-July for the journey of more than 1300 nautical miles through the waters of Denmark and Sweden where elaborate pre-Worlds events are planned at Stockholm and Sandhamn. (Additional events will be held en route where pandemic restrictions permit.)

With fifteen yachts registered to date, the 2021 World Championship is slated to be the biggest 12mR event ever held in the Nordics.

Finland's first pre-war 12mR - Blue Marlin (FIN-1), owned by Henrik Andersin, was the inspiration for bringing the event to Helsinki, where NJK is concurrently celebrating the club's 160th Anniversary.

The Championship in Finland will be preceded by regattas in Denmark, Germany and the Worlds Tune-Up at the Royal Swedish Yacht Club. While there are still uncertainties about pandemic restrictions, the core Helsinki Championship will consist only of sailing. Current registration fees reflect the absence of social activities. However, the Worlds Committee has an extensive program of social events planned which will be announced as circumstances allow.

Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup
Photo by Andrew Delves / RNZYS. Click on image for photo gallery.

Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup Nick Egnot-Johnson and his KNOTS Racing crew of Niall Malone, Alastair Gifford and Ollie Gilmour have survived a tricky sudden death final day to prevail and win the 2021 Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup.

Going back to the Round Robin stage, the top seeding came down to a battle between the eventual finalists, with Nick Egnot-Johnson and Jordan Stevenson racing off in the final match. As is always the case with these two the race was a tight one, but it was Egnot-Johnson who claimed a narrow victory. Both finished with an eight-one record, but Egnot-Johnson snatched the top spot on countback with that vital final race win.

The quarterfinals were then on, with Mastercard Youth Training Programme skipper Robbie McCutcheon beating Wellingtonian Will Wright three-nil. Nick Egnot-Johnson also won his quarter-final three-nil, taking down Mastercard YTP skipper Max McLachlan. The other two semi-finals were between Jordan Stevenson and Celia Willison, as well as Albert Stanley versus Megan Thomson. Each were tied at one-one, but Stevenson and Stanley both won the third matches to take two-nil leads and extend the matches into the final day.

Unfortunately for our two quarterfinalist female skippers (Willison & Thomson), the wind really didn't come to the party on the final day, forcing the Race Management team to abandon them as a best of three, deeming Stevenson and Stanley winners and therefore semi-finalists.

A new regatta for big yachts is born
Ibiza JoySail - 17th -20th June 2021

STP Shipyard Palma, Europe's main hub for sailing yachts' refit & repair, and Marina Ibiza, the most exclusive marina in the Med, have joined forces to create the IBIZA JOYSAIL REGATTA.

It is a new competition for yachts from 24m that promises to become a new benchmark in the world of high-performance regattas because of the international team that has developed the rules, because of the novelty of including an offshore race between Mallorca and Ibiza, and also because of the exciting experience programme both on the water and onshore, for owners and crews, all of this following the most rigorous protocol to make it a safe event.

The Notice of Race was published on February 16th and many of the familiar teams have already expressed their enthusiasm and interest in participating in this new international sailing event.

The regatta programme will start on Thursday June 17th 2021 from the STP Shipyard in Palma de Mallorca, with an offshore race from the Bay of Palma to the island of Ibiza and will continue on the following three days with coastal races in the waters of Ibiza and Formentera.
