Italian Team Wins Fleet Racing at Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai

Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai The six international crews at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai hosted local dhow skippers today in three fleet races when competition resumed off the Dubai International Marine Club.

Italy's Mascalzone Latino Audi won the day handsomely with skipper Gavin Brady scoring two first places. The French/German team All4One and Sweden's Artemis Racing were second equal, while Emirates Team New Zealand was third.

Saeed Hareb, CEO of the Dubai International Marine Club, presented the fleet race trophy to Gavin Brady and presented commemorative medals to Brady and all his crew.

The Emirates Team New Zealand crew raced today wearing black arm bands and with their ensign at half mast in a somber reminder of the Pike River coal mine explosion in New Zealand that claimed 29 lives. The team is planning a brief on-water ceremony tomorrow morning to pay their respects to the lost miners.

Skippers of the four semi-finalists chose their starting positions and their boats tonight. BMW Oracle Racing chose to race fourth-seeded All4One while Emirates Team New Zealand will start against Synergy Russian Sailing Team.

In the semi-finals the winners will be the first boats to win two races. The winners will race the finals on Saturday in a best of five series.

In today's fleet racing, each of the four teams raced twice over the course of three races.

Sunseeker Australia Cup Perth, Western Australia: Britain's sailing superstar Ben Ainslie showed his class on the Swan River today, rising to the top of the leaderboard at the Sunseeker Australia Cup, to win the round robin stage of the regatta.

He won five straight races today, turning a fifth place at the end of day one, with a 3 - 2 scoreline, into first place with a scoreline of 7 - 2 this evening, sharing the top score with local skipper Torvar Mirsky, but taking the top spot on a tie‐break.

Winning the round robin brings with it the privilege of choosing his quarter‐finals opponent, and he has selected South African Ian Ainslie who finished fourth on the leaderboard.

It was Western Australian skipper Torvar Mirsky who defeated Ben Ainslie in the final of this event last year, so a repeat of this match in the final this year is still possible, no doubt with the British skipper hoping to reverse the result.

Another important game within a game being played out at this event is the fight for the last place available at next week's Monsoon Cup, in Malaysia, the final and deciding regatta on this year's World Tour.

The top placed skipper at the Sunseeker Australia Cup, who has not already qualified, will grab that slot.

Conditions on the Swan River's Perth Water were very tough again today, with the seabreeze piping in at 15 to 20 knots, which on such a tight course is a real test of skill, fitness and agility. -- John Roberson

More Bad Luck For Christophe Bullens
Up to two tonnes of water flooded into Belgian ocean racer Christophe Bullens' yacht Five Oceans of Smiles too last night after a part on his generator broke. Christophe awoke in the early hours to find water up to his knees in the engine compartment of the Eco 60 yacht.

To make matters worse several rubbish bags had split open, spilling their contents into the compartment. It took the 49-year-old VELUX 5 OCEANS skipper hours to bail the water out of the engine compartment and clean the rubbish up.

It was beginning of a long night for Christophe that also saw a fitting holding his foresail break and his food store flooded with water. The problems began when Christophe was awoken by the smell of fuel in the cabin.

After spending several hours bailing the water out, Christophe took the helm of Five Oceans of Smiles too to allow his autopilot to rest. Shortly afterwards he heard a loud bang and on closer inspection found a fitting holding his Solent foresail in place had broken. Luckily the sail was not damaged and Christophe was able to reattach it after fixing the fitting.

Just to add insult to injury, Christophe later discovered the compartment storing his food supplies had flooded with water. "I went to make some dinner, opened the food compartment, and to my horror it was flooded," Christophe said. "Luckily the freeze dried food is packaged separately and is still dry. Everything else is soaked. No more little biscuits or long life bread. Thankfully I have less than two weeks left at sea."

Christophe's run of bad luck started before the race began when his original yacht Five Oceans of Smiles was dismasted en route to La Rochelle. After restarting the first leg a week after the rest of the fleet, Christophe was forced to pull into the Canary Islands to make repairs and then to the Cape Verde Islands when he was struck down with an infection. He then broke his Solent stay off the coast of Brazil.

At the last position report Christophe had 2,264 nautical miles left to sail to the finish line in Cape Town, South Africa.

Great Britain II to Sail in the Volvo Ocean Race Legends

Volvo Ocean Race Legends Alicante, Spain: The 77' maxi, Great Britain II, the only yacht ever to take part in five consecutive Whitbread Round the World Races, is to race once again. She will be on the start line with a host of other legendary boats, competing at next year's Volvo Ocean Race Legends reunion and regatta in Alicante, Spain.

The yacht was built especially to compete in the very first Whitbread, and was skippered by Sir Chay Blyth, who was awarded a CBE as the first person to sail single-handed non-stop westwards around the world in 1971 onboard the 59' British Steel.

Sailed by a crew of paratroopers, Great Britain II won line honours in 1973-74, setting a bench-mark record for the circumnavigation of 144 days. Chay was reunited with the yacht again in 1981, the third Whitbread Race, but this time she raced under the name of United Friendly.

The late Rob James, took the helm in the second Whitbread, held in 1977-78, again winning line honours and slicing 10 days off the record to log an elapsed time of 134 days. Bob Salmon became her skipper in 1985-86, renaming her Norsk Data GB as a result of gaining some sponsorship the day before the start of leg one.

Great Britain II sailed her fifth and final race under the name of With Integrity, skippered by Andy Coghill. Among her crew was a young Englishman, Matt Humphries, who went on to take part in the Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race five times, and was skipper of Dolphin and Youth in 1993-94.

The yacht's present custodian is Paul Rushton. After caring for her for over 15 years, he thinks this is a far more appropriate title. He bought her sight unseen over dinner on a train in the spring of 1995 - a deal that took less than 30 seconds. Paul and his family are bringing the boat, now renamed Whitbread Heritage to reflect her past, from her home port of Cowes, Isle of Wight, to Alicante, so that they can share her history with others.

Tacticians Are Key to Success in the Monsoon Cup
Speaking to the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT), Team Azzurra's Pierluigi De Felice talked first-hand about the dramatic impact the weather could have next week:

"As a tactician, if the monsoon rain comes down hard you have to change your approach. The knock-on effect of a downpour is huge - The rain pushes the water levels up, the currents gain momentum and then the pre-start fight for position becomes even more critical. That's when teams will take bigger risks which can sometimes define the success or failure of their race there and then."

"It's difficult to prepare fully for the Monsoon Cup because there is nowhere quite like it. We'll only really be able to fine tune our approach during the two practice days before qualifiers."

If the weather has the ability to throw up an air of unpredictability, Williams also cited the Pulau Duyong course layout and umpire decisions as further considerations not to be overlooked, concluding: "The nature of the Monsoon Cup, the number of variables, simply makes it even more open. The title could literally come down to one umpire call, it's that tight!"

RYA Development Squad 470 Womens Coach Wanted
Skandia Team GBR is looking to contract a coach to support the 470 Women's Development Squad.

The position has responsibilities for supporting teams comprising both experienced and new talent in the 470, usually, but not exclusively, from within the RYA's World Class Pathway, currently numbering 5 boats . The role will require both UK and International event and training support with the aim of developing the required skills over time that will deliver results to enable the sailors to transition into the RYA Performance programme.

The position is responsible to the RYA Olympic Development Squad Manager. The role also requires the effective communication and collaboration with relevant Skandia Team GBR Coaches, Specialist support and Sports Science team.

The successful applicant will need to have the communication, people and technical skills to effectively coach the squad, be able to operate a clear goal driven Micro and Macro scale plan, balanced for both the individual teams and the squad as a whole, using the tools and systems within the programme to ensure a targeted and fast learning environment. Knowledge of Olympic classes sailing and a successful personal sailing history will help strengthen the creditability of applicants.

Typically the role will require approximately 100 contact days supplemented by remote work days as appropriate.

ISAF Publishes New Call Book Supplements
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has published the 2011 supplements to the current editions of The Call Book for Match Racing and The Call Book for Team Racing together with revised editions of the books.

The Call Books provide a clear definition, for both competitors and umpires, how certain incidents will be called in match or team racing events. Through written and illustrated examples, scenarios that occur in match or team racing events are presented along with the rules applicable to that situation and how and when they should be applied.

Following on from the ISAF Annual Conference in November, there have been a number of new Calls added to both Match Racing and Team Racing Call Books, whilst several calls have been revised.

These new Calls and Revisions have been published as Supplements to the current editions of the Call Books. The full text of both Call Books has also been updated. The Supplements and full texts are all available to download from the ISAF website at

ISAF Rapid Response Calls

In addition to the editions and supplements of the Calls Books, ISAF also responded to demand from event organizers and umpires for short-term answers by providing an ISAF Rapid Response Calls system for both Match Racing and Team Racing.

Calls proposed under this system should be presented in a format similar to existing calls, and sent to the ISAF office in Southampton (see for contact details). Any diagrams should preferably be in TSS (TSS is a special boat drawing programme). A call approved as a Rapid Response Call will be immediately communicated to all ISAF International Umpires (IUs) and MNAs. It will also be posted on the ISAF Race Officials microsite at

Victor Fernandez Claims First Ever PWA Wave World Title
Sal, Cabo Verde: Victor Fernandez has claimed his first ever PWA wave world title following a gruelling nine days on standby in Cabo Verde. In the hope of the conditions improving on the final day of competition head judge, Duncan Coombs scoured the island for the very last time, but the flat-calm seas and gentle breezes were in no way sufficient for the 2010 wave world title showdown.

With little sign of either the wind or swell improving, the organisers decided to let the sailors relax for the entire day by calling off the competition at 09:00.

Having only completed five man-on-man heats throughout the week, the PWA's finest leave Cabo Verde with no result.

Without a result in Cabo Verde the world rankings remain the same as they were just nine days earlier, leaving 2010 Pozo champion, Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North, MFC) to walk away with the 2010 PWA wave world title.

In second place, and possibly the luckiest man alive right now after his shock exit from the single elimination here on Saturday, is three times former freestyle world champion, Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC).

Claiming the final podium position is the 2009 Pozo wave champion and teenage sensation, Philip Koster (Starboard, NeilPryde, Dakine). His incredible jumping has wowed the world on many occasions making him without doubt one of the sailors to watch out for in the future.

Extreme Sailing Series 2010 On Channel 4
With the forthcoming 2011 Extreme Sailing Series venues, teams and innovations due to be revealed at a Press Conference in Portugal on 13 December, for the next four weekends British viewers can relive the action from the 2010 circuit that is changing the way sailing is seen.

Four, half-hour shows, presented by double Olympic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson and produced by Sunset+Vine|APP, kick off this Saturday 27 November at 7.25am on Channel 4. With on-board cameras on every Extreme 40 catamaran, the series takes the viewer into the heart of the racing where crews compete within a few meters of the crowds on tiny, 'stadium-style' race courses. Featuring Olympic Gold Medallists, multiple World Champions, round the World sailing stars and America's Cup racers, the action is intense and even the very best are caught out.

Governors Cup The Governor's Cup is a 1700 mile - usually downwind, yacht race from Cape Town in South Africa, to James Bay on St. Helena Island.To make things even more interesting,this year's race will be starting from False Bay Yacht Club in the quaint naval town of Simonstown and will have the added thrill of rounding the beautiful but dangerous Cape Point very early in the race.

With less than a week to go to the start of the False Bay Yacht Club 2010 Governors Cup Yacht Race (Sponsored by Col Lionel Dyck) to the island of St. Helena, a young group of intrepid sailors is in Simonstown, getting ready to race "JML Rotary Scout" against the rest of the fleet. With help from family and friends, these young people will push themselves to their limits and experience what it means to be self reliant as they race across 1,700 miles of Atlantic Ocean, on a voyage that is expected to take them around 12 days.

With two adult co-skippers guiding them, they will have to run the boat, make sure that they are fed, keep communication schedules with race organisers, do countless sail changes, navigate their position and deal with any emergencies along the way.

Launched in 1994, "JML Rotary Scout" is a Tosca 39 that was donated by the Rotary Club of Bellville, as a bare hull to the Sea Scout Base at Sandvlei, Lakeside. With an enormous amount of work and raising of funds, she was fitted out and equipped over a 7 year period and is now moored at False Bay Yacht Club where she is regularly used as a training vessel by the Scouts.

With sponsorship this year from Eikos Insurance and the Jewish Maritime League, these young adventurers are sure to have the experience of a lifetime as the race against the rest of the fleet to St. Helena.
