JJ Giltinan "World Championship"

America's Cup

Who Is The Best America's Cup Helmsman?
With the America's Cup first-to-seven showdown about to begin, Suzanne McFadden of Newsroom.co.nz asks a six-time winner how much could it come down to the helmsmen?

Murray Jones knows the exact essence of what makes an America's Cup helmsman great.

A phenomenal Kiwi sailor in his own right, Jones has worked alongside some of the most masterful drivers to have ever fought over the 170-year-old trophy.

Known as "Captain", Jones has won the Auld Mug six times. This is the first America's Cup since Team NZ's historic victory in 1995 he hasn't been caught up in a campaign. "I miss it a little bit," he admits.

He called tactics and helped spot the wind for Sir Russell Coutts in three victorious Cup campaigns – as Coutts set a record of 14 consecutive America's Cup race wins and finished his Cup sailing career unbeaten.

An America's Cup hall of famer, Jones worked with then Oracle helmsman Jimmy Spithill and helped mastermind the American team's come-from-behind slaying of Emirates Team New Zealand in San Francisco in 2013.

Then he was called into Team New Zealand for the final six months of their 2017 campaign, as the performance coach to helmsman Burling and his crew. Burling - who at 26 became the youngest helmsman to win the prized silver ewer - credited Jones as being crucial to New Zealand's success in Bermuda.

Jones rates all three helmsmen among the very best this competition for the world's oldest sporting trophy has seen. He's witnessed their genius, and their shortcomings too.

12 Metre Yacht Club Releases 12mR: An Enduring Legacy
The 12 Metre Yacht Club (12MYC) is excited to announce the release of 12mR: An Enduring Legacy. Filmed during the 2019 12mR World Championship in Newport R.I., highlights include racing footage and competitor interviews paired with the experienced insights of the 12MYC's Station Steward Gary Jobson who also wrote and narrated this documentary.

From July 8 – 13, 2019, twenty-two 12 metre yachts and more than 300 world-class sailors representing six countries converged on Newport to compete at the 2019 12mR World Championship. "The narrative of this film demonstrates why the people who race 12mRs are so passionate about the yachts," said Jobson. "The feeling of sailing a twelve upwind connects sailors to the wind and the water in a way that makes you want to come back."

An Enduring Legacy co-producer, Jamie Hilton added: "It was important for us to document the once-in-a-lifetime gathering of 12 metres at Newport for the 2019 World Championship. Not only did we want to capture the legendary racing fleet in action, but also the voices of the participants- many of whom had raced on the twelves in America's Cup competition when it was held in Newport between 1958 and 1983. Both American and international sailors were excited to be in Newport and ecstatic to be back on a 12 metre."

Reunited aboard Courageous (US-26), three of Ted Turner's 1977 America's Cup winning crew - sailmaker Robbie Doyle; bowman LJ Edgecomb and tactician Gary Jobson - remarked on "better-than-original" boat performance throughout the highly-competitive Modern division. Together with Courageous, Newport's iconic resident 12mRs - Columbia (US-16), Weatherly (US-17), Intrepid (US-22) and Freedom (US-30) boast seven America's Cup victories among them.

Three "pre-war" twelves - Nyala (US-12), Blue Marlin (FIN-1) and Vema III (N-11) were shipped from Italy, Finland and Norway respectively, to race against the United States' oldest 12mR Onawa (US-6). American viewers will enjoy seldom-seen footage of these beautiful European wooden twelves sailing in Newport waters. In high-tech contrast, the three "plastic fantastics"- New Zealand (KZ-3), Legacy (KZ-5) and Kiwi Magic (KZ-7) - were together again battling for bragging rights in the Grand Prix division against Kookaburra II (KA-12). Although the competing 12 metres ranged in origin from 1928-1987, every yacht and her crew were ship-shape and fighting fit, each thoroughly prepared for world championship competition.

Shirley Robertson previews the Thirty Sixth America's Cup
Shirley Robertson With the final races of the 36th America's Cup Match now just moments away, Shirley Robertson previews the two boat showdown in another two part podcast from the heart of the action in Auckland New Zealand.

In Part 2 Robertson looks back on the Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series with fellow broadcast commentator and one time America's Cup helm Kenny Read. The pair discuss the performance of the three Challengers, before being joined by special guest, David 'Freddie' Carr. Freddie, a one time Extreme 40 team mate of Robertson's, is the lynch pin of the INEOS TEAM UK grinding unit, and still sore from the Prada Cup Final exit, is candid and honest as he talks about the performance of the successful defender, Luna Rossa, but also about the British team's rollercoaster Challenger Series as they bounced back from serious hardware issue heading into the regatta...:

"It was phenomenally hard, for the design team, they realised there was a problem with what was going on with the boat, with the foils, we had a problem with what was going on with the boat and we had to figure out how to solve that problem... We then had about a week to figure out how to sail this modified boat... As soon as we put the boat back in the water, after the designers figured out the problem...we knew we were back in the game!"

Robertson kicks off Part 1 of the podcast with an interview with the port side helm of the successful Challenger, the AC36 Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa's Francesco Bruni. Bruni has been at the forefront of the Italian team's significant improvements in performance over this campaign, and is both realistic and candid as he discusses their Prada Cup win. He attributes much of their success to the calm and level head of co-helm, Jimmy Spithill, and is both respectful and hopeful when quizzed about their Cup opponents, Emirates Team New Zealand...

2021 Budget: Red diesel use by boaters confirmed
In his 2021 Budget, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that sailors will still be able to use red diesel to propel their vessels.

Last year, the UK Government announced it would remove the subsidy on red diesel from April 2022, although boaters would still be able to use subsidised fuel for heating onboard.

It followed a consultation with the sailing industry and commercial boat owners after a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in October 2018 that the UK wasn't complying with the EU Fuel Directive by allowing leisure vessels to use marked diesel.

A similar ruling was made against Ireland, which had green diesel. From 1 January 2020, the use of green diesel to solely power pleasure boats was banned.

In the UK, most marinas sell red diesel on a 60/40 split of full and lower tax rates for propulsion, and heating or power generation

The U-turn by the Government only applies to recreational boaters in Scotland, Wales and England.

In Northern Ireland however, recreational boaters will no longer be able to use red diesel for propelling their craft.

This is to ensure the UK meets its international obligations under the Northern Ireland Protocol of the Withdrawal Agreement.

Youth Foiling Gold Cup

Youth Foiling Gold Cup More wind led to a welcome change of pace today as the sailors could invest their efforts in strategy and speed rather than just trying to fly. The wind was patchy and rewarded the teams who were sufficiently at ease piloting their boats to be able to keep their eyes outside the boat, looking for the next gust. This meant that the top-ranking teams at the end of day two were the ones that had clocked in the most training days before the start of the Youth Foiling Gold Cup.

Team DutchSail- Janssen de Jong, Young Azzura and RHKYC Team Agiplast didn't have it all their way however as the American Southern Challenge were finally able to bring the fight to the top teams. In race 3, they broke away from the fleet just after the start and still led going into the final upwind leg. They were overhauled by RHKYC Team Agiplast the Dutch Kingdom Team at the finish line but put together an impressive performance for a new 69F team.

Young Azzura were best able to threaten the Dutch domination today, crossing the finish line first in race 2 after leading the whole race. However, they were judged to be over the start line early and received a penalty that meant they tied with second-placed Team DutchSail- Janssen de Jong before falling behind the orange helmets on the countback.

Team DutchSail- Janssen de Jong dominated the day. They won all of the five races they sailed and got stronger as the day went on, winning race 5 by an incredible two minutes. But it was race 4 that revealed the true mastery of their foiling stead. Foiling off the foils early in the run in a rare unforced error, they found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being at the back of the pack. At the end of the run, they dropped their gennaker and two-sail reached past their competitors, swerving to windward and leeward of the other boats until only the Americans remained ahead. On the upwind leg, the Americans split left, the Dutch to the right, found better pressure and completed their dramatic come-from-behind win. -- Conrad Colman
