Prada Cup - INEOS TEAM UK win RR1 Race 1
As the clock counted down for the first race of the day, the pressure was on for both INEOS TEAM UK (GBR) and American Magic (USA), but for the British there was no doubt that the stress of not having won a single race since arriving in Auckland was weighing heavily on the entire team.

But when it came to crunch time Sir Ben Ainslie's team appeared to have a strong game plan from the start.

By the top gate INEOS TEAM UK were ahead by 11 seconds.

From here, the British were able to pick the side of the right hand side of the course which still had more breeze while also keeping a loose tactical cover on their opponents. Meanwhile American Magic took the left hand mark at the top gate, a move that cost them time by the bottom of the first downwind leg.

As the first lap was completed INEOS TEAM UK had stretched out their lead to 19 seconds.

Another lap of the course saw a big stretch in the distance between the pair to 1min 8 sec after lap two.

From there little changed, INEOS TEAM UK sailing confidently and accurately throughout to increase their lead to 1min 20 sec by the finish.

INEOS TEAM UK win RR1 Race 2 Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli
As the British and Italian teams prepared for their match, the breeze was continuing to build reaching 16-22kts at Bean Rock towards the top of the race course. If previous performances were anything to go by these conditions were further into the British sweet spot and away from where the Italians have been most competitive.

In the pre-start, INEOS TEAM UK entered the start zone from the left hand side crossing Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli with ease. For the opening seconds neither team looked keen on engagement. As the clock counted down to the last minute and as both boats set up to come back to the start line on starboard tack a left handed wind shift meant that neither could cross the start line on starboard. From their windward and ahead position, INEOS TEAM UK were able to tack onto port for the start line and cross ahead - a narrow leading margin perhaps, but one that the British team held as they headed up the first beat.

Once again, Ainslie and his tactician Giles Scott looked to work the right hand side of the course where the breeze was still strongest. As they did so they were able to sail higher and faster than their opponents and force the Italians into their dirty air. This meant that Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were forced to tack off and head towards the lighter conditions on the left hand side of the course.

By the top gate INEOS TEAM UK rounded the right hand mark 15sec ahead of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

By the bottom of the first downwind leg the British lead had stretched slightly to 22 sec but, as the pair headed up the second beat the Italian strategy was emerging, staying close and waiting for an opportunity to pounce was the name of the game. It never happened.

Although they were able to whittle the British lead down to 13sec on the last windward gate rounding, by the finish INEOS TEAM UK had stretched out to win by 28sec.

Dalin and Burton Match Up
Today passing Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, there are no options In terms of strategy and choices on the northwards climb up the Atlantic for the tightly matched Vendee Globe leaders. But the conditions are difficult and tiring. The E'ly tradewinds shift in direction and more particularly in strength and that is proving especially wearing, with squalls and gusts which make setting the optimum sail are difficult on the close reach.

Apivia skipper Charlie Dalin who has led now for two days is now 20 miles ahead of second placed Louis Burton on Bureau Vallee 2. The pair have been consistently quicker than the four other key rivals round about them.

One month ago when he was SW of Tasmania Dalin had to repair the bearing which secures the foil as it enters the hull aperture on his port side. He is paying a price for not having full use of the large hydrofoil as he tries to get away from Burton who is racing a 2016 generation boat, but the leading skipper remains objective,

"I have to fight with the weapons I have." He told the Vendee Globe Live show today, "One month ago I came close to abandoning so I am just glad to be here, but we will be on starboard for a long time for sure and it has already started. I'm not sure we don't have to tack in the Doldrums because it looks rather interesting and challenging right now. There will be a lot of sail changes to be made, reefing, reefing so that will inevitably play out. But overall there is a lot of starboard tack in the trade winds of the northern hemisphere. The routing of the Doldrums appears to be quicker and easier in theory than in reality so we have to be wary of any timings, "warned the French skipper who grew up in Le Havre and was French Offshore Champion in 2014 and 2016.

Long Beach Yacht Club announces new dates for 56th Congressional Cup
Congressional Cup Chairman Chris Macy has announced the 2021 event will be postponed to mid-September in light of the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery. "We look forward to celebrating a return to the glory of Congressional Cup racing," Macy said, when this legendary match race regatta returns.

An official World Championship event of the World Match Racing Tour and a Grade One competition, the Congressional Cup has been hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club since 1965 and is known as the 'grandfather of match racing' and pioneer of on-the-water umpiring that is the standard in yacht racing today.

Organizers plan to follow the traditional program with the world's top-ranked skippers from around the globe competing for the esteemed Congressional Cup trophy.

The revised schedule will commence with the Ficker Cup qualifier Sept. 10 to 12, to determine the final two entries to Congressional Cup. Then, on Wednesday Sept. 15, the thrill of premier-level match racing returns to the waters off Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier for five exciting days, culminating with finals Sunday Sept. 19. Racing commences at roughly noon each day and is held in a fleet of identical 37-foot Catalina keelboats, which guarantee a focus on skill and tactics.

2020-2021 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship Final
Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT Next Sunday's final race to decide the 2020-2021 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship should be a dramatic race as the defending champion Winning Group team goes head-to-head with the current Australian champion tech2 team on Sydney Harbour.

Unfortunately for the contest, Michael Coxon's Smeg team, which was in third place on points, retired from last Sunday's race following a collision with tech2 as the two skiffs approached the first windward mark.

As a result of the collision, tech2 was forced to retire from the race with broken rigging. A protest hearing on Wednesday scored tech2 "average points in accordance with RRS Appendix A10 (a)"

Going into Sunday's final race, the net points table shows, Winning Group on four points, tech2 on 4.3 points, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett) on ten points, Finport Finance (Keagan York) and Andoo (Marcus Ashley-Jones) on 12 points, and Yandoo (John Winning) on 13.

There has been little between the Winning Group and tech2 teams over the entire championship series and Sunday's race is sure to be the same.

The Winning Group team members John Winning Jr., Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton have the experience edge over their rivals but the tech2 skiff has been fast in all conditions so far this season.

Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake have produced excellent teamwork each week and will be more than a match for their opponents in Sunday's decider.

The early weather forecast suggests that a 12-knot ENE wind just before the race is due to start will become a 12-knot SE wind during the race, which will add a further dimension to the contest as crew work will be paramount. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Adrian Kuttel Becomes First Single-Handed Entry In Cape2Rio 2023
The name Kuttel is not a new one in the world of local and ocean racing circles, least of all the Cape2Rio Race. The late Peter "Padda" Kuttel competed in two Whitbread Round the World Races on his yachts Xargo3 and Atlantic Privateer, as well as two Cape2Rio's aboard Atlantic Privateer and Namsea Challenger. His brother Edward "Teddy" Kuttel continues to race actively out of Cape Town. The Kuttel sons have continued this enjoyment of ocean racing, participating together to race the Class 40 "Privateer" double-handed in the 2014 Cape2Rio race. Adrian has also competed in four Cape2Rio races to date (2003, 2006, 2009 and 2014).

Adrian has for a long time been captivated by the allure of short-handed sailing, participating in the Class 40 Double-Handed Around the World Race with Conrad Colman in 2012, which saw him rounding the infamous Cape Horn for the first time. Hence it comes as no surprise that he has just become the first single-handed entry for the Cape2Rio Race 2023. For his build up to the start on 2 January 2023, he has a few additional objectives in his sight.

He recently completed his qualifying sailing, in order to be able to compete in this year's "Cap-Martinique" Race , a single-handed event open to 11-12m yachts to be sailed from La Trinite sur Mer, France to Fort de France, Martinique. This event is designated as an amateur race and has attracted 66 entries. The race, which is fully subscribed, starts on the 18th April.

Adrian will be sailing his JPK 1030 named "Sentinel Ocean Explorer", after a charity that he has been instrumental in supporting. The charity, Sentinel Ocean Alliance, has as its mission statement the following objective: "The Sentinel Ocean Alliance creates ocean-based opportunities and provides environmental education for the youth of the South Africa's coastal community".

New 5.5 Metre Class Yachts in Cowes This Winter
5.5 Metre Class In what seems a long time ago, given the pandemic, I joined Peter and Louise Morton in Sydney this year during January for the 5.5 Metre World Championship, where "Morty" and I sailed with British Finn sailor, Andrew Mills on board GBR40 "Girls on Film".

It was a wonderful trip and event. Great racing and camaraderie across all three divisions of the regatta. We sailed quite well and placed 4th, within a fairly tightly contested leading group of teams. Coulda-shoulda done a bit better, but on the whole, as newcomers to the class and in an older boat (2004 Wilke), we were satisfied and keen to do more 5.5 Metre events.

Upon reflecting on the event and witnessing the development of hulls through the years, Morty decided to commission some new design ideas and put those through CFD analysis conducted by Steve Quigley and his team at One2three Naval Architects in Sydney.

Morty assembled an amazing group of people across the sail-boat world to collaborate on this phase of the project. David Hollom was commissioned to provide design candidates for analysis, whilst Tom Schnackenberg was tasked with putting the resultant CFD'd hulls though a series of VPP analysis based on sail-area, righting-moment and wind-speeds. The North Sails designers also played a key advisory role. At the same time Suzy Russell of Orca Consulting has been providing input to the structural engineering.

The upshot of all this is two boats being built though the 2020/21 winter in Cowes. Morty has long been a great supporter of sailing, sailors and boatbuilders alike. After a tough and challenging 2020, it is so refreshing to be busily involved in such a cool project. One of the boats is a Hollom design that will be built in composite by Gavin Tappenden and his team at Composite Craft UK. The other is a cedar hull and composite deck to a Steve Quigley design, being constructed by David Heritage Racing Yachts.

My involvement has largely been on the systems design and planning. To that end, we have been trialling various ideas to control the rig and appendages on "Girls on Film" over recent weeks and sailing on the nicer winter weather on offer. All super-interesting for sailing-boat geeks like Morty and myself. The entire team is so appreciative of Morty's enthusiasm for racing and also for supporting the industry and it's people. -- Andrew 'Dog' Palfrey
