The Wait is Over
Auckland (NZ) Following the days of official practice race sessions in the Hauraki Gulf, the moment has come to enter the heart of the competition with the PRADA America's Cup World Series - Auckland and the PRADA Christmas Race. The regattas will take place from Wednesday December 17th through Sunday December 20th. This will be the first event showcasing the new AC75 yachts together on the same racecourse.

The AC75 yachts are 75-foot monohulls (about 23 meters) featuring two lateral foils that allow the hull to lift and sail above the surface of the water and reach speeds up to 50 knots. Designed to compete in this 36th edition of the America's Cup, they are the result of over two years of work, where each team has individually interpreted the Class Rule.

Race Director Iain Murray will be able to choose from the five available racecourses, spread throughout the Hauraki Gulf, depending on the weather conditions.

Starting at 3 pm each day (New Zealand Time) the program will feature four races of about 25 minutes each, in which all the teams (the 3 challengers and the defender) will compete in Match Race regattas, organized in two round robins.

After three days the ranking will decree the winner of the PRADA America's Cup World Series. This result will, in turn, determine the draw of the pairings for the Christmas Race, scheduled for Sunday December 20th. The format of the regattas will be different for the two events. The PRADA Christmas Race features two direct match races, from which the winning teams will move on to the Final, whereas the two other teams will compete in a "petite finale" for third place.

America's Cup 2021: Team New Zealand make big statement with crushing win against Luna Rossa in first race of World Series
It's only one race, but Team New Zealand made an ominous start to the America's Cup World Series with a crushing win over Luna Rossa today.

The defending syndicate led from start to finish, and the race looked over at the first mark.

Te Rehutai crossed the line a staggering 3:13 ahead of the Italians, in what was an absolute, good old-fashioned smashing.

The New Zealand crew was faster upwind, quicker downwind and better with their transitions in a result that will send shock waves through the Challenger fleet.

There was a big split early on - well as large as possible with the narrow boundaries - and Team New Zealand made good ground on the left-hand side of the course.

They made further gains - as the Italians struggled to stay on their foils - with plenty of positive talk on the Te Rehutai.

LinkedOut: water in the front hold
Thomas Rouillard noticed in the early evening (French) that the front hold of his LinkedOut was filled with water. He immediately stopped the boat and caped himself head to wind.

Shortly before 10 p.m., the skipper put his two pumps into action in order to drain this watertight compartment, the bulkheads of which are closed so that the boat's living space is not affected.

As soon as the water has been evacuated, Thomas will carry out a complete examination of the boat to make a definitive diagnosis explaining this sudden flooding.

Busy Time Ahead For Noakesailing Team

The next three months will be a busy time for the Noakesailing 18ft Skiff Racing team as crew members prepare for a Sydney-Hobart Race campaign, the 2021 JJ Giltinan world Championship while still maintaining the Noakes Group business activity during the present difficult time.

Sean Langman, Managing Director of Noakes Group, and one of Australia's most successful and versatile yachtsmen, has never been a person to sit on his hands and is a high achiever in both business and several levels of Australian and world sailing.

His association with the Australian 18 Footers League and 18ft Skiff Racing generally in Australia goes back more than 25 years.

Sean has always been an owner-skipper of several skiffs since his first venture into the 18s in the mid-1990s, but his influence became even greater when he introduced a 'Noakes Youth' campaign to "assist young people make their way in the world".

Sean is heavily committed to the 18s in 2020-2021. He is not only skipper of the Noakesailing skiff but has also committed to continue his support of the 'Noakes Blue' campaign.

The 2020-2021 Noakesailing 18ft Skiff campaign brings together an international team of Sean Langman, from Australia, Ed Powys from the UK and Josh from New Zealand. This will be Ed's third season with Sean, while Josh is part of the highly talented team for the first time.

Restored and Reborn: The Story of Kirawan

Kirawan has established a vast history and legacy within her 85-year lifespan. She was designed by naval architect Philip Rhodes, with the intention of winning the 1936 Newport to Bermuda Race. Having previously finished last at the 1934 race, Rhodes wanted to design a powerful but elegant vessel that would guarantee the win.

The notorious 36' race was defined by its harsh weather, culminating in a 40 knot SE gale that would last for 4 days. Despite being crewed by all amateurs, including designer Rhodes, Kirawan emerged victorious, in large part due to her apt design. Current owner Dan Levangie describes,

"If you read the story of the 1936 race, they attribute a lot of her ability to keep charging through the heavy winds and weather to the hard dodger that people were able to hide underneath."

Kirawan would pass through several hands, even briefly renamed Silvana until 1954 when she was sold to an owner on the West Coast. During her career there, Kirawan's resume grew exponentially, notably including her participation in the 1955 and 57' TransPac races. She was acquired by movie producer "Sandy" Horowitz in 1999 who would restore her out of his yacht club in California.

In 2000, she made her way back to the East Coast, returning to Newport in preparation for the 2000 Newport to Bermuda Race. Unfortunately the race was not accompanied by the same good fortune of its 34' predecessor, and Kirawan found herself in need of repair after one of the hull seams opened up during the race. The crew was able to temporarily fix the issue, and Kirawan successfully made her way to a Bermuda finish.

After sailing in the OpSail 2000 parade of Tall Ships, Kirawan was transported to Wickford, Rhode Island for extensive repairs. Kirawan would remain in the same Wickford shed that Dan Levangie would find her in sixteen years later.

New book released: The story of Goran Andersson and Marinex
Goran Andersson was one of Marstrand's most famous sailors and businessmen. In 2019, Marstrands Hembygdsforening (Marstrand Local Heritage Society) published his story in Swedish, but it has now been translated into English and is available both as a printed book and as for Kindle.

Goran Andersson was born in 1939 and spent his first years in the towns of Lysekil and Uddevalla on the Swedish west coast.

At the age of 10 he and his family moved to the island of Marstrand. There in 1955, Goran started sailing the Finn and represented Sweden in the 1960 Olympic Games. He dominated the Swedish Finn fleet for many years and in 1961 he won the Nationals with straight bullets in an 80-boat fleet.

He also started sailing the OK Dinghy in the 1960s and achieved immediate success, including two World Championship titles in 1965 and 1966 when the OK Dinghy was the world's largest one-man dinghy class.

As well as success on the water, Goran established the famous Marinex company in 1959, which became one of the most dominants brands of masts, sails and boats in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 2019 he was inducted into the Swedish Sailing Hall of Fame and then in 2020 was also included in the OK Dinghy Hall of Fame.

The Class40 withdraws the Globe 40 from its program due to its postponement to 2022
Regretfully, The Class40 learned about the postponement of the Globe 40 to a new date in June 2022, a round-the-world race which was supported and included in its program in 2021.

The major event for ocean racing and the Class40 in 2022 is the Route du Rhum, which makes this postponement incompatible with the class program.

The Class40 reiterates its support for the round the world scheduled for 2023 and carried by The Race Around.

The Board of Directors is delighted with the many boats under construction and sponsors who are re-engaging alongside its members.

The Class40 hopes that the year 2021 will allow its sailors to reconnect with the open sea.
