Kiwis Dent American Armor with One-Second Victory
The New Zealanders split race wins with the regatta leader, winning their second match by a nail-biting one-second margin over the fast advancing Americans.
Oracle skipper James Spithill had won the pair's first match, preserving his team's no-loss record after four days of racing off the host Dubai International Marine Club and putting the Kiwis on the back foot.
In an about-face, New Zealand's Dean Barker grabbed control at the start of the second race and led the Americans around the course.
It was a must-win for the Kiwi team flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates. Down two races before today, and docked half a point for a collision on the opening day, they ideally needed two wins to put a dent in the winning performance of the team that holds the America's Cup.
The scoreboard now has BMW Oracle Racing on seven points and Emirates Team New Zealand in second place with 3.5 points. Sweden's Artemis Racing, Synergy Russian Sailing Team and the French/German team All4One are third-equal on three points. Italy's Mascalzone Latino Audi team is sixth with two points.
At least a day's racing remains in the First Round Robin. All the teams each have two races still to sail. ETNZ and Artemis have a third match, with the promise of a one-point advance on the score table for the winner.

Gutek Takes Second Place in Velux 5 Oceans First Leg
After a frustrating few days of light winds on the approach to Cape Town, Gutek completed the leg in fresh conditions, a south easterly breeze of between 20 and 25 knots powering him across the finish with the lights of Cape Town illuminated in the background.
Gutek, a former national champion dinghy racer, impressed right from the start of the solo round the world race, leading the VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet across the start line of this first stage and out into the Bay of Biscay. Despite problems with his Eco 60 yacht Operon Racing early on, Gutek kept pace with American rival Brad Van Liew, constantly challenging for first place right until the end of the 7,400-mile leg.
Gutek's finish comes just three days behind Brad, who won the ocean sprint on Sunday evening. The feat is all the more impressive considering Gutek is a newcomer to solo sailing and, at 19 years old, Operon Racing is the oldest boat in the VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet and seven years older than Brad's Le Pingouin. But she is by no means a slow boat - she was built by French sailing legend Alain Gautier who sailed her to victory in the 1992/3 Vendée Globe.
In the tradition of the VELUX 5 OCEANS, the 42-year-old American was on the dock to welcome in his rival and friend. Gutek was also reunited with his wife Eliza and his shore crew.
Canadian skipper Derek Hatfield and British ocean racer Chris Stanmore-Major are due to arrive in Cape Town over the weekend.

Perth International Regatta
Australian 49er team, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, dominated the day winning all three races in their group.
ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Tom Slingsby from Australia, won both races in the Laser men's event, moving him into second place overall just behind Croatian, Tonci Stipanovic. Fremantle Laser Radial sailor, Matthew Wearn maintained first place overall after finishing 19th and 4th in the two races this afternoon. Inconsistent results have narrowed the points margin between boats.
470 men and women teams had a small delay this morning after being held ashore waiting for wind. Israel team Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela are equal first in the men's event with Australians Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page. Young New Zealand team Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie were in top form, winning both races in the 470 women's event.
RS:X athletes worked hard this afternoon, pumping their sails in the light wind and 35 degree heat. Netherlands world number eight, Dorian van Rijsselberge, won both races in the men's fleet. Spanish board sailor, Marina Alabau, also won both her races.
In the Finn event, French sailor Jonathon Lobert maintained first place after four races. Britain's Ben Ainslie moved up the fleet by finishing second in the last race of the day.
Evan Walker Wins Australian Match Racing Title
Sailed on Hobart's River Derwent in blustery westerly winds with chilly mountain gusts of up to 33 knots, Walker came from behind to win his semi-final against young fellow Sydney sailor David Chapman.
He then held off the tenacious veteran Tasmanian yachtsman Nick Rogers in a final that could have gone either way.
Sailing four-up, with Olivia Price, Jack Hubbard and Amanda Scrivenor as crew, Walker beat Chapman, from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron 2-1 in their best-of-three race semi-final.
Walker then won three extremely close races from Rogers, a champion International Dragon class sailor from the Royal Yacht of Tasmania, to win the title 3-0. Sailing with Rogers were Simon Burrows and Julian Salter, a considerably older combination than the young Sydney crew.
In the second race of the final, Walkers boat crossed the line less than a metre in front of Rogers'. In all three races the two identical Ellliott 5.9s were never more than two or three boat lengths apart, sailing in conditions where seamanship skills took over from tactics as the 'bullets' ripped down from Mount Wellington, above Hobart.
Evan Walker, 23, was the ISAF (International Sailing Federation) world youth champion and Australian Youth Sailor of the Year in 2005. In 2006 he won the Australian youth match racing championships, followed by back-to-back Australian open match racing championships (today was his third) and twice won the prestigious Hardy Cup at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. -- Peter Campbell

Maxi Association Partners with ORC
According with this agreement, the IMA Technical Office will act as a ORC Rating Authority indipendent from any other MNA and will issue ORC rating certificates for maxi yachts generated by the ORC Rating Office.
In 2011, the IMA intends to utilize the ORCi rating system for the Supermaxi category and to evaluate use of the rating system for other categories.
However, the IRC rating system is confirmed for the Rolex Mini Maxi World Championship and for the Wally category events.
Since the IMA Technical Office supplies rating administration support to the YCCS regattas, the ATO (IMA Association Technical Office ) will issue rating certificates for the Supermaxis participating in events where the YCCS acts as Organizing Authority.
Mr. Gennaro Aveta will become the ORC technical representative assigned to work with the IMA Technical Office to assist with the processing of ORCi rating certificates.
The IMA has been recently recognized as a full ISAF International Class. This means that the International Maxi Association in now the only recognized Maxi Class association and is authorized to held annual World and Continental Championships.
Consequently, the possibility to have in a near future a Supermaxi World Championship - utilizing the ORCi rating system - will be taken into consideration.
Oman Sail has established worldwide recognition by winning the eXtreme 40 Class for the last two seasons. However there is much more depth to the Omani initiative than the just elite racing. The Muscat Regatta is a big part of Oman's long-term commitment to developing sailing as a sport.
The Muscat Regatta is very much geared towards promoting the grass roots of racing in Oman. The vast majority of competitors are young Omanis, mostly in their teenage years, who aspire to join the elite sailors that the country is now producing. Members of the PDO Club in Muscat and the Omani Royal Navy, also took part.
An offshore breeze ranging from 10-15 knots, with a slight sea-state, combined with tropical air temperatures to provide near perfect race conditions.
Eight catamarans enjoyed some thrilling racing, powered up in decent breeze. Dave Clark and Victoria Grainger from the PDO Sailing Club in Muscat won the Multi-hull Class. They were pushed all the way by two of Oman Sail's young aspiring multi-hull sailors, Sulaiman and Abdul Atif. The Thirteen boat, Laser Class supported by Aston Martin Oman, went right to the wire, Musab Al Hadi winning on the last race, by just half a point. from Majid Al Mageni. These two young sailors showed great skill and discipline and should be stars of the future for Oman Sail. Hamza Soluh has obviously listened to his father, who coaches at Oman Sail. The sixteen year old won the Q'BA Class, but there was a titanic battle for second place, which had to be decided on count back. The Q'BA Class was the biggest fleet at the regatta, with 25 competitors, ranging from experienced adults to young novices.
Marina Bandar al-Rowhda offers substantial cash prizes at the Muscat Regatta The class winners walked away with just under 1000 euros each, which is probably equal to the cost of the airfare from Europe and local accommodation. There were also significant cash prizes for podium finishes.
The prizes were awarded by His Excellency, Rashad bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Hinai, Under Secretary Minister of Commerce and Industry and Saif Al Shibly from the Ministry of Tourism. -- Louay Habib

Ronstan has just completed a multimillion dollar relocation to a new, purpose-built facility in Braeside, near Melbourne, Australia. This new facility will serve as the company's main worldwide manufacturing facility as well as its corporate headquarters.

Spanish marine industry association ANEN held its annual conference at the Barcelona boat show in Spain last week against a backdrop of a significant step ahead in boating regulation. From January 1, 2011, new legislation will have major repercussions and contribute to facilitate recreational boating in Spain.
First and primarily, vessels under 12m (39ft) in length will be exempt from the need to be matriculated. As long as the boat carries the CE mark, completing a simple form and producing the purchase invoice will suffice to obtain a registration certificate. Obtaining the three legal documents on sea-worthiness and radio communications that have so far been required will no longer be necessary. This applies to both charter boats and those for private use.
Also regulated by the new decree, charter boats will not need to be listed under the movables property registry with a significant saving in cost and time. Regarding electronics on board, SOLAS VHF and emergency energy source will not be required unless for off-shore sailing. In all cases the installation of electronic devices on board will no longer have to be authorised or monitored by government. -- IBI News, www.ibinews.com

As the 49th Barcelona International Boat Show draws to a close, exhibitors in the Gran Via Exhibition Centre and nearby Port Vell are giving mixed reactions to the success of this year's event - with most agreeing that the Spanish boating market is still a long way from recovery.
Event organiser Fira de Barclona is working hard to deliver a first-class show in what can only be described as an extremely challenging business environment. This year, some 145 boats are being displayed on water in the Moll d'Espanya, compared to 165 in both the Moll d'Espanya and the Moll de la Fusta in 2009. The number of exhibitors is also down, from 387 last year to just 354 in 2010. In Gran Via, total exhibitor space has increased slightly from 35,000m2 to 37,000m2.
Several exhibitors also feel that the Barcelona show is not international enough. Of the 354 exhibitors this year, only 55 were from outside of Spain.
Once again, Deutsche Bank is offering good financial incentives for buyers at this year's show to help kick-start the market. The Catalonian government has also extended its 30 per cent reduction of the 12 per cent matriculation tax levied on all boats over 8m (26ft) - provided the boat is purchased at the show and registered in Catalonia. -- IBI, www.ibinews.com
Composite rigging specialist Future Fibres has installed a 50m (164ft) autoclave in a new factory next door to Future Fibres' rigging facility in Valencia, Spain.
The new venture, Future Spars, had already opened for business this summer. Future Fibres has teamed up with mould specialist Persico SpA to design and build aerospace-inspired carbon masts for the grand prix race and superyacht markets.
The new curing oven doubles Future Fibres' existing 5,000m2 purpose built state-of-the-art production facility.
On top of the 100-strong existing staff count, the company plans to create a further 50 new jobs and grow annual turnover by €50m over the next four years. -- IBI News, www.ibinews.com
Volvo 60 (2001) with a Volvo Penta MD22p (55HP) engine. This sailing yacht is highly geared for specialist racing having previously won 14 major races in the Australian racing calendar. She was refitted and repainted in 2007 with all of her equipment being coded to Cat 2 standards as well as being equipped with liferafts. In previous ownership this boat was sponsored by a national television network resulting in much maintenance being put into her welfare.
