From Mayday to Safely Aboard Yes We Cam!
Speaking this morning after being rescued Kevin Escoffier said,

"It's unbelievable what happened. The boat folded up on a wave at 27 knots. I heard a bang, but to be honest, I didn't need to hear that to know what had happened. I looked at the bow. It was at 90°. In a few seconds, there was water everywhere. The stern was under water and the bow was pointing up to the sky. The boat split in half in front of the mast bulkhead. It was as if she folded up. I promise. I'm not exaggerating. There was an angle of 90° between the stern and the bow.

"I didn't have time to do anything. I just had time to send a message to my team. I'm sinking I'm not joking. MAYDAY. Between the moment when I was out on deck trimming the sails and when I found myself in my survival suit, barely two minutes had passed. It all happened extremely quickly."

"I came out of the boat and put on my survival suit. I could see smoke. The electronics were burning. Everything went off. My only reflex was to grab my telephone to send the message and pick up the survival suit which I never stow away. I wanted to pick up the grab bag, but I couldn't get to it with the water rising. I grabbed the liferaft at the stern. Open I couldn't get into it as it was three metres under the water. The water was up to the door in the cockpit."

"I would have liked to have stayed a bit longer on board, but I could see it was all happening quickly and a big breaker came and I was in the water with the liferaft. At that point I was not feeling very confident. Being in a raft in 35 knots of wind is not reassuring. I was only reassured when I saw Jean. But the problem was to find a way to get on board with him. We said a few words. It was a real battlefield out on the water. He was forced to move away, but I could see he remained close by. I stayed in the raft until early this morning."

"I didn't know whether the weather would ease enough to carry out a manoeuvre. He was 2 metres from me. He sent me a line, but it was difficult to stop the boat. In the end I managed to reach some tubing and lift myself aboard. The sea was still heavy with 3.5m high waves. It is hard in such conditions to climb aboard a 60' boat, particularly as it is hard in the survival suit. It's lucky I'm in good shape physically, as I can promise you it is not easy."

When I found myself on board with Jean, we hugged each other. He said to me. 'S**t you're aboard. That was tricky!' I replied, 'I have spoilt your race. You were doing so well.' He replied, 'That doesn't matter. Last time it was me who upset Vincent's race.'

What next?
"For the moment, I don't know what will happen. We'll sort that out with the Race Directors. I have just slept for 2 hours and am well rested. I have eaten something. I did all I could with the boat. I reinforced her and did everything. So I don't have any regrets about what I did."

Dalin Crosses Cape of Good Hope
While Jean Le Cam was involved in the rescue of Kevin Escoffier 840 miles to the southwest of South Africa Vendée Globe leader Charlie Dalin passed the longitude of the Cape of Good Hope on Monday at 2311hrs UTC after 22d 9hrs 51mins since the start in Les Sables d'Olonne on Sunday 8th November

The three other IMOCA monohulls which had diverted to provide assistance, Yannick Bestaven (Maître CoQ IV), Boris Herrmann (SeaExplorer-YC of Monaco) and Sébastien Simon (ARKEA PAPREC) have now resumed racing to cross the longitude of the Cape of Good Hope and onwards towards the Kerguelen Islands.

This afternoon Thomas Ruyant passed the longitude of the Cape of Good Hope in second place in the Vendee Globe. He crossed at 1341hrs UTC so in an elapsed time of 23 days 21 minutes, just 14 hrs and 30 mins after leader Charlie Dalin (Apivia).

The Person over Board System you MUST have
As one of the biggest suppliers of maritime ropes, Robline is always looking for rope-related inventions. So did we introduce some time ago the Hook & Moor product where Robline has the worldwide distribution rights. Some years later we now want to introduce another fabulous product invented by the Austrian Hermann Cisar – the POB (person over board) –NET.

With this newly developed rescue system people and objects can be saved easily and fast out of the water within three steps: Capturing, Securing, Rescuing. In comparison to conventional person over board systems the POB-NET obviates the risks of the POB (person over board). The tubular net is placed over the body of the POB and encloses the person. By pulling the yellow line the sling net changes from a vertical to a horizontal position. The sling net encloses the POB in a secure way. The POB-NET and the rescued person can be easily and quickly pulled out of the water.

The rescue system will be delivered with a storage bag, on which the individual application steps are listed. In addition, a QR code is printed on this storage bag, which leads you directly to a video presentation of all application steps.

Snipe Hall of Fame 2000 Inductees
The International Snipe Class has a long history of which very few other classes can boast. The boat was designed by Bill Crosby in 1931 and 88 years later, 32000+ boats have been built with fleets in over 30 active nations.

It is a history of people, sailors, champions, enthusiasts, promoters, sailmakers, builders and organizers.

The past is strongly linked to the present: all the inductees have helped to promote and grow our Class in many countries and continents; many of these people are still strongly linked to the Class or have been, when they were alive, to form a large family, the Snipe Family, from great-grandparents to grandchildren.

For this reason, the "Snipe Class International Racing Association Hall of Fame" was created.

The SCIRA Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Snipe Class and Snipe competition.

The Class is honoring three categories: Sailing, Technical Design and Contributors, --people who made significant contributions to the Snipe Class.

For this second year a maximum of eight inductees were considered (ten in the first year, eight for the second year and five for the years after).

Record 122 Entry For Datchet Flyer
The Datchet Flyer, opening round of the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series, has attracted a record entry of 122 boats for this weekend, 6 & 7 December. With Covid restrictions uppermost in organisers' minds, the doublehanders and singlehanders have been split into different days, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Entries could have been even higher but for the fact that with National Lockdown #2 only being lifted a few days beforehand, many would-be competitors have been unable to retrieve their boats from sailing clubs whose gates have been padlocked for the past month. With almost 200 pre-registrations of interest, organisers would have been forced to make selections about who could or couldn't attend.

As it is, everyone that is able to make it to Datchet Water Sailing Club this weekend has been awarded a place. So much so that some eager beavers have even entered both days in different boats. Multiple Endeavour Champions Nick Craig and Toby Lewis will be racing a hot Merlin Rocket fleet on Saturday and Nick will be back on Sunday to try his hand in the Hadron H2 singlehander.

The same is true of Tom Gillard who will be sailing with another former winner of the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series - Rachael Rhodes - in a Merlin one day, with Tom returning the next day to compete in his Streaker.

Over the past six years, the inner city kids from East London's Greig City Academy have made a big splash in different parts of the sport including two participations in the 600-mile Rolex Fastnet Race. This weekend sees three entries from Greig City Academy, with Jaydon Owusu and Azat Ulutas racing in a hot 420 fleet with 14 entries, and then Jaydon returning on Sunday to hike out his ILCA 7 (formerly Laser Standard), while fellow Greig City acolyte Kai Hockley will be in the ILCA 6 (formerly Laser Radial).

With a moderate to strong forecast, it could suit the world-class Fireball crews such as Chips Howarth/ Vyv Townend and Matt Burge/ Dan Schieber who between them have won more world and national titles than perhaps any of them can remember. The Contenders will also relish a stronger forecast, notably local legend Stuart Jones.

Dick Carter - Yacht Designer
In the Golden age of offshore racing

In 1965 Dick Carter entered Rabbit, the first boat he had ever designed into that year's classic Fastnet race - And Won! Two years later, racing Red Rooster, an even more innovative boat of his own design, he won the Race again, his centreboarder finishing top boat in the Admiral's Cup which contributed greatly to overall victory for the American team!

Over the next decade, Carter and his yachts dominated across the world, winning successive World One Ton Cups with the likes of Tina, Optimist, Wai-Aniwa and Ydra, the Half Ton Cup with Crocodile and Two Ton Cup with Aggressive. During 1972 Wai-Aniwa skippered by New Zealander Chris Bouzaid capped off a great season by finishing Top Boat in the Southern Cross series lifting New Zealand to win the team trophy.

The stories behind other top Dick Carter designed racing yachts include Robin Aisher's Frigate, 2nd boat overall in the 1973 Admiral's Cup, Carina III, a member of the winning team at the same event, Chica Tica II, winner of the 1976 Cape/Rio Race, Dr Recchi's Custom 65 footer Benbow, line honours and handicap winner in the 1977 Middle Sea Race, and William Hubbard's Lively Lady II which dominated the 2006 Bermuda Race prize-giving.

Despite his lack of formal training in naval architecture, Dick Carter made himself into a skilled yacht designer with radical ideas and a record of daring and continuing success. The results his designs achieved, are a direct reflection of his innovative mind. Blessed with what sailors call 'an eye for a boat' - an intuitive understanding of why some boats sail faster and better than others, coupled the ability to transform that understanding into new expressions. He was the first to separate the keel and rudder in ocean racing, the first to introduce a trim tab to the trailing edge of a keel, an idea later adopted by Olin Stephens on his 1967 America's Cup winning 12 metre Intrepid. Dick was also the first to radically reduce weight and windage within the rig, pioneering the idea of internal halyards and shroud tangs. "They don't even do that on America's Cup yachts." Ted Hood remarked at the time.

As John Rousmaniere writes in his Introduction: "This story of the underdog sailor taking on the world and conquering it is often surprising, roundly entertaining, inspiring and instructive. Dick's approach was straightforward: challenge the common wisdom with a daring that he describes as: 'Once a challenge is met successfully, that is enough for me.'"

The last challenge was the first he could not successfully meet - the petroleum crisis during the 1970s that depleted economies and nearly destroyed the boating business. Just a decade after he burst on the scene, Dick Carter retired from boats, and moved to furrow a fresh course through life. Many of his old friends and shipmates were sure he had died. Now Dick is back, larger than life - and with a remarkable story.

Star Sailors League
2020 hasn't given us many chances to meet up on the racecourses, test our abilities and challenge one another. SSL though wasn't standing still, and has been working to grow the SSL Gold Cup into what it will be like the "football world cup" in sailing:

- 56 nations challenging each other
- Onboard 47-foot boats provided by the organization
- In a two-month event on Lake Neuchatel and Lake Geneva, Switzerland over May and June 2022 all to determine the best sailing nation of the world.

The nationality rule requires all sailors to have the passport of the country, following the Olympic regulations, and the sailors are partly nominated by Captains, and partly are coming from the SSL Ranking, now taking into account over 100,000 athletes, competing in more than 15,000 regattas in 80+ classes all over the world.

All of this is reality, and over the summer, in spite of the global pandemic, many teams have come to train on Lake Neuchatel at the SSL Headquarter, onboard the SSL47: France, Poland, Estonia, Greece, Switzerland, Bulgaria to name a few. Many others have organized trainings in their country like Hungary, Turkey, Iran, and so many have already booked their training session for 2021. From May to October the SSL Headquarters will host at least a team per week including a two-week long SSL Gold Cup Test Event in September.

The SSL Finals is the master event in sailing, organized since 2013 at the end of the sailing season. The SSL Finals is the playoff competition among sailors racing in the Olympic circuits, match racing, America's Cup, SailGP, 52 Super Series and all of the international classes, its goal is to crown the best Skipper and best Crew of the season. The top 10 Skippers of the SSL Ranking, and up to 15 other sailors with outstanding results in the season or great highlights in their career are invited by SSL to compete every year in December. Due to a very limited number of international events in 2020 and strong travel restrictions all over the world, the fundamental pillars of the SSL Finals are not in place. Therefore, the SSL has decided to postpone the 8th SSL Finals from 2020 to 2021. We'll be back with one of the most appreciated events of the year at the end of 2021.

2020 Grinders Coffee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge returns to Sydney Harbour
After the extensive bushfires of the 2019-2020 season caused thick smoke to blanket the Harbour and the cancellation of last year's race, CYCA is pleased to be able to bring the Grinders Coffeee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge to Sydney Harbour once again.

The Club has currently received entries from the two super maxis Peter Harburg's RP100 Black Jack and Christian Beck's Juan-K 100 InfoTrack, as well as Sean Langman's RP69 Moneypenny and Director David Griffith's JV62 Whisper. An additional couple of entries from the top-end of town are set to potentially make a surprise appearance too.

The Club would like to highlight some changes to the shore-side aspects of the race which will help to ensure a COVIDSafe event for all. Most importantly, there will be restrictions on the capacity of the Clubhouse as well as changes to how we are able to watch the race.
