Bypassing the Saint Helena high pressure from the east or the west?
Louis Burton on Bureau Vallee 2 announced the color Monday evening by gybing the first to go around the Saint Helena high from the west. At the head of the fleet, Charlie Dalin ( Apivia ) and Thomas Rettant ( LinkedOut ) should bypass it by the east.

The Saint Helena High is the justice of the peace in the South Atlantic. It is currently divided into two parts by a low pressure axis that starts from Brazil.

The East cell (H1) of the anticyclone will fill up. The West cell (H2) will take its place in the middle of the Atlantic by the end of the week.

The objective for Charlie Dalin ( Apivia ) and Thomas Rettant ( LinkedOut ) is to succeed in bypassing the Saint Helena anticyclone by its east side while still taking advantage of a small wind corridor to the north of the inactive low which divides currently the high pressure system in two.

The group of pursuers began to jibe southwards on Monday evening to cross the front and seek passage to the west of the high pressure system.

PRB , Yes We Cam! , Maître CoQ IV , ARKEA PAPREC and SeaExplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco are still making good progress in the windy corridor north of the front, which they have been following for 48 hours. They are probably waiting until the last moment to go south and adjust as best they can the western bypass of the rapidly moving high.

In the end, everyone could find themselves at the end of the week south of the high pressure system, in the same weather system, with variations close to the current ones.

The wind is currently very southerly at the exit of the Doldrums, forcing Armel Tripon ( L'Occitane en Provence ) to pass close to the Brazilian coast while waiting for the wind to pick up at Salvador de Bahia.

Repairs and Returns
Sebastien Destremau (Merci) has reported a problem with the keel hydraulics on his IMOCA this morning. The hydraulic oil spurted out from a leak in the ram cylinder and sprayed all over the inside of his boat. Now he has no pressure in the rams and the keel head is moving free. He told us he has a plan to repair and is in light winds and relatively flat seas.

First I need to fix the leak, and I've identified where it is After that, I will have to replace the pipe. But I don't have one. I had to disassemble a piece of hose from the manual standby pump, to match the hose I need to replace. There is an issue to make it match. It's a mess. As soon as you use something for something else you create another problems. So I have to check the whole system well before putting pressure on it. "

* CORUM L'Epargne, which had dismasted on the morning of Monday 16 November, took four days to arrive in the port of Mindelo in Cape Verde.

Three members of his technical team accompanied by Greg Evrard, his team manager, Frederic Puzin, CEO CORUM L'Epargne, joined the skipper to welcome him and organize the return of the boat. Nicolas Troussel was able to return home to his family.

Since then, the boat has been taken out of the water, is stripped and will be loaded onto a cargo ship heading for Lorient around December 10 or 15. The on-site technical team will ensure the smooth running of this operation, which is delicate because of the foils. IMOCA will be back in Brittany at the end of next month and will be started afterwards.

* Kojiro Shiraishi, skipper of DMG MORI Global One , was on the 9:30 am shift this morning.

"Yesterday I tried to navigate as well as possible but I rather reversed... The wind changes 180 degrees every 30 minutes, I had a northerly wind and here it is from the south, it is super complicated.

It's a small feat to have managed to repair this sail. This is the first time I have done this and it still took me six days. I had to cut the upper part of the sail which I then connected to the lower part. I also cut the first reef so I can't have a high mainsail anymore. I had badly rolled up my J2 after the gybes so I tore it a bit too. I intend to go as far as possible with these repairs !! The sail is obviously less efficient and it does not have a good shape, but I am relieved.

My boat has a lot of scratches and minor issues. I try to be in harmony with him and I do everything to be able to come back to France as quickly as possible. I'm sorry the boat is in this condition, but I'll do my best to finish this round the world trip! "

When only the best (really) is enough - Musto
When Armel le Cleac'h won the 2016-2017 Vendee Globe race he did so wearing all-Musto technical clothing. Time to go for the back-to-back win then in 2020...

For Musto, the Vendee Globe has always been the ultimate proving ground for its offshore gear. Armel Le Cleac'h wore Musto on his way to victory four years ago in the last edition of this non-stop solo circumnavigation. The French veteran will be wearing his Musto clothing in more comfortable circumstances this time as he follows the race intently from the shore. A year ago he raced with Clarisse Cremer in the Transat Jacques Vabre, when together they sailed Banque Populaire X across the finish line as first non-foiling Imoca 60 and sixth overall. Since then he has continued his mentorship of the 30-year-old Frenchwoman about to embark on her round-the-world debut.

Cremer will be one of many sailors wearing Musto in this edition of the Vendee. 'I feel both anxious and excited! Which I believe is a normal way to feel when you're about to race the Vendee Globe for the first time,' Cremer comments.

Martin Keruzore wins the Mirabaud Sailing Video of the Century
The Mirabaud Sailing Video Award 2020 puts the spotlight on ocean racing! French producer Martin Keruzore (Air Vide et Eau Productions) wins this special edition thanks to his magnificent video summarising the 70,000 nautical miles he covered around the world over the last three years as an onboard reporter. Herve Borde (Nefertiti) is awarded the Special Prize for their iconic video of the Vendee Globe 2016-17, filmed in the southern Oceans, while Artur Sikorski (MikkelGroth.com) receives the Public Award.

Keruzore receives a prize money thanks to the support of our partner Mirabaud, as well as an Alpina watch donated by Skippers magazine.

"It's the only video I gave a score of 10 on all three criteria", says Martina Orsini, photographer and member of the Jury. "It isn't about a single race, but a collection of ocean experiences. The editing, the choice of images and the music are absolutely perfect. Of all the videos received, Martin's is the only one that managed to value the images so well. He is excellent and fully deserves this victory!"

Four Men - One Ocean - the Challenge is on!
The Ocean Rowing Boat that Rauri, Mark, Justin and Dan are to row across the Atlantic in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, left their training base of Lymington in Hampshire recently to be shipped to La Gomera in the Canary Islands. This leaves the team at home, to continue keeping themselves match fit for the start of the race in La Gomera in the Canaries on the 12th December 2020.

It has been a long journey for the 'On Shoulders of Giants' team since they started the campaign training in October 2019. They are now fully prepared, both mentally and physically, for the Challenge they are facing. The name of the team comes from their inspiration from Sir Isaac Newton's quote from 1675, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Put simply they see it more as a metaphor, for the support we all need to achieve great things, whatever the daily challenge might be to each and every one of us.

This ethos led them naturally towards their chosen charities, that they are supporting for the Atlantic row; both have very personal connections for the rowers. The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation aims to make a difference to the lives of those battling and coping with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), through funding research into its causes and potential cures, along with providing grants to individuals to enable them to live as full a life as possible. Rauri Hadlington has first-hand experience of this debilitating condition, as one of his oldest and closest school friends who he had played rugby with since the age of 7, suffered from MND over 3 years before he died in 2014.

The second charity the team is supporting is PiP, Pursuing Independent Paths. PiP is a local London charity that supports adults with learning disabilities to lead more independent lives. Dan heard about PiP in 2017, and was immediately struck with the wonderful care that this charity was providing, with their very personal approach to each individual.

Another Vendee racer who is providing commentary to reach far beyond the ranks of the already knowledgeable enthusiasts. Hare's battle to get to the startline was no different from that of half the fleet, but these stories need telling alongside those of racing 'brilliance'. Like King Jean, Hare's fan club will keep on growing the further she gets around the course; but she has already proved to be another skipper capable of bringing this race into the most landlocked living rooms.

In the 1997 Whitbread it was Paul Cayard and his brutal talk of firehoses on deck that kept followers of the race locked onto the news coming off the eventual race winner. In this Vendee Globe that mantle has landed with King Jean, who introduced himself to thousands of new fans by hogging the limelight in the opening weeks of the race by refusing to lie down with the other old boats as he 'should'. And then there came prose to turn Moitessier green with envy...

The recent retirement of industry veteran Christian Iscovici, head of Latitude 46 and Wauquiez since 2007, has led to a review of the company structure by main shareholder, Experton-Revollier Group.

Experton-Revollier Group acquired Wauquiez in 2011, before taking over Latitude 46 in 2015 and Rhea Marine in 2018. Iscovici was a former Directeur General of Group Beneteau in the USA from 1984 to 1993.

Alex Pinet, director of Rhea Marine, will take over the general management of the entire nautical group, which grew with the acquisition of the sports boat brand Method Boats in December 2019.

Patrick Bloch, who was previously connected with Wauquiez, will return to take the operational management of the Wauquiez site in Neuville en Ferrain. He will also take the commercial responsibility for all of the brands.

Back on Monday
Your humble narrator will be revelling (albeit with very few family members) in the socially sanctioned gluttony that is Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday... no shopping, no presents, politically and religiously neutral, just food, drink and family.

Let us not forget our neighbors this week. Food banks are stretched to the breaking point. There are far too many empty seats at the table. Let's spend less on ourselves and more on others.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy holiday. Even if it's just over Zoom and Skype.
