The French Join the Volvo Ocean Race
The announcement was made as Cammas was in the French port Le Chateau in Brest, preparing to set off on a bid to conquer the Jules Verne Trophy aboard the 32-metre maxi trimaran. The chosen designer for Groupama's new boat is Argentinean Juan Kouyoumdjian, the designer of the winning boats in the last two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race.
"It's now been over 12 years that Groupama and Franck Cammas have worked together as a team. Today, we have decided to continue this commitment by participating in the Volvo Ocean Race to inspire a more international dynamic in our common project," said Frederique Granado, director of external communications at Groupama.
"Groupama is developing strong links overseas, where we carry out nearly 30 per cent of our business, and the Volvo Ocean Race is clearly the most suitable sports event to reflect our group's new expansion," Granado explained.
Knut Frostad, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race is very pleased about the return of a French boat to the Volvo Ocean Race: "The French certainly have their place in the Volvo against the cream of the Anglo-Saxon and European crews. It is excellent news that the Groupama team is joining the race. I have known Franck Cammas and his team for a long time. They are formidable competitors, who are remarkably well organised. It is going to be an exciting race."
* Editor: I suspect we'll hear of a French stopover for the VOR soon. This is a much bigger deal than it appears, it's not just one team, it's the French market. This a very big coup for the VOR.
Feeling The Fatigue
Race rules force a minimum three hour stop if a boat decides to put in to port for technical reasons. The Solidaire du Chocolat rule is not really a penalty if the reason for the pitstop requires major attention. It leaves the time for a brief rest, time to take on fuel and fresh food, and perhaps even time to have a quick drink under the sun. As for the weather, that will depend very much on the eastern wave which is ahead of the fleet and kicking up a great cloudy mass. Grey skies, and nothing dry on board. The crews have been stewing in humid conditions for a fortnight.
Three days to wait before sighting land, for the race leaders that is, four more for the tail enders.
The leaders are the ones to have the fewest technical problems. Tanguy de Lamotte and Adrien Hardy (Initiatives-Novedia) are less than 900 miles of Saint Bart's and have an 80 miles lead over their closest rivals, Giovanni Soldini and Pietro d'Ali (Telecom Italia) who have other problems this afternoon than their broken forestay. The Italians were overtaken by Bruno Jourdren and Bernard Stamm (Cheminees Poujoulat) as they were six knots slower and had called to a halt for several hours head to wind to carry out repairs.

GGYC Response To Alinghi's Appeal
On Friday Justice Kornreich decided that, in accordance with the Deed of Gift, a February match for the America's Cup can not be held in the Northern Hemisphere other than in Valencia, a venue previously agreed by both the Defender and Challenger.
The Spanish host of the 2007 America's Cup Match remains the best choice for everyone. Its facilities and infrastructure are proven and ready. Both teams maintain their permanent bases in the Port America's Cup. The City is ready to welcome the America's Cup back.
Following her order on the venue last Friday, Golden Gate Yacht Club confirms Bryan Willis (GBR) as its nominee for the three man panel requested by Justice Kornreich to assist her determine the outstanding sailing and measurement issues over the 33rd America's Cup match.
GGYC was the first to put forward a name to the New York Supreme Court. SNG, responded with Graham McKenzie (NZL) and the two of them mutually agreed the third member of the panel, David Tillett (AUS).
All three men are former members of America's Cup juries, as required by Justice Kornreich. Bryan Willis and Graham McKenzie are now in New York.
* On Tuesday morning, during testing on the waters off San Diego, the BOR 90 dismasted. All of the crew on board are safe. No one was hurt in the incident.
Support craft were with the race boat at the time and are currently working to salvage the rig and get the boat back to shore.
The team is investigating the cause of the failure.
A New Deck For The Morris M42
The Morris M42 has a new deck option. Like the M36 deck, the new M42 deck features a short trunk cabin with three windows instead of four. The self-tacking jib track has been moved off the cabin top maximizing the foredeck area and restoring the deck sweeper concept. The impact on the interior is limited to the area forward of the mast. This option is perfect for those who really love the look of the M36 but want the larger interior of the M42. The new M42 deck was installed on Hull 19.

Sailing Events Launched in the Arabian Gulf and Asia
Building on the foundations of the Asian Record Circuit established by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2007 onboard 'B&Q', and the Extreme Sailing Series Asia to be staged this winter in Hong Kong, Singapore and Muscat (Oman), OC Events (Asia) have now launched two inaugural premier racing events - the 'Tour of Arabia' and the 'Indian Ocean 5 Capes Race'.
The launch of the first of the new Arabian 100 (A100) Class trimarans, Oman Sail's Majan, is the catalyst for the creation of these two new ground-breaking offshore racetracks. On 10 November, Majan will set out from Kuwait City in the north of the Arabian Gulf on a five-leg tour that will cover 1,700 nautical miles (3,150km), to trace out and test the route of the future 'Tour of Arabia' race. Stopping in Bahrain, Qatar Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Majan's voyage will finish in Muscat, Oman.
The 'Tour of Arabia' will lead directly into the premier edition of the 'Indian Ocean 5 Capes Race'. Other than the recent traverse of the Indian Ocean by the Volvo Ocean Race fleet, current traditional oceanic courses only exploit the southern part of the Indian Ocean and above 40 degrees South it remains the most unchartered territory as far as professional racing is concerned, yet it offers a wide variety of tactical challenges and conditions.
As with the 'Tour of Arabia', Majan will trace out this new course taking the big dive south for a giant tour of the Indian Ocean Capes facing the challenges of all the combined might of the Southern and Indian Oceans. From the heat of the tropics, frustrations of the windless Doldrums at the Equator to the towering waves of the Roaring Forties. Majan plans to set out on the 6th February, 2010, on this 15,000 nautical miles (27,780km) course, that should take between 35 and 40 days including stopovers.
The Indian Ocean 5 Capes Race will pass the Capes of Ras Al Hadd (Oman), down to Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), across the frozen wastes of the Southern Ocean to Cape Leeuwin (SW Australia), past Cape Piai on the tip of the Malaysian peninsula (the southernmost point of mainland Asia, just to the west of Singapore), and back underneath Cape Comorin (southern tip of India) to Oman on the Arabian Peninsula. As the class of large ocean going trimarans like Majan (sistership to Thomas Coville's Sodebo) grows, it is planned for this to develop as a recurring event on the ocean racing calendar.
Fleet of 116 Nominated for Rolex Sydney Hobart
Last year's event attracted 113 nominations and of those 100 made it to the start line on Boxing Day with 92 crossing the finish line off Hobart's historic Battery Point having completed the gruelling Bass Strait crossing.
In 2004, 116 yachts sailed south for the 60th anniversary edition and prior to that 115 made it to the start line in 1998. It's likely that this year's fleet will finish up the second largest in more than a decade.
Expected to rendezvous in Sydney Harbour at 1pm on Saturday 26 December for the traditional blast of cannon fire will be seven maximum length heavyweights. Apart from a single scare last year, Bob Oatley's Wild Oats XI crew has largely had things all their own way in the 628 nautical mile premier blue water event since they took the treble of line honours, the overall win and set a new race record in 2005.
But as Wild Oats XI stirs for a record fifth charge at line honours, the sharks are circling. At least four other similar sized maxis are capable of stemming Oats' amazing run says Neville Crichton, owner/skipper of Alfa Romeo who is riding high after his 143rd line honours win in New Zealand last week and one of those challenging.
In a hard upwind slog his money will be on Mike Slade's proven UK based ICAP Leopard, while in a running race he would back Wild Oats XI, Grant Wharington's modified 30 metre Skandia Wild Thing and Sean Langman's soon-to-be 100 footer LOYAL, and of course his own Reichel Pugh-designed champion.
Joining the super sleek and modern will be many of the race faithfuls, including three-time overall winner Love & War, Simon Kurts' 1973-launched S & S 47, and Mike Freebairn's 1968-built S & S 49 Ray White Spirit of Koomooloo, a 22-time entrant.
Ian Kiernan's 1958-built Tasman Seabird Sanyo Maris, which tonight is running first in the IRC handicap stakes of the Hempel Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race, will also add a touch of old world charm to the starter's list. -- Lisa Ratcliff/Rolex Sydney Hobart media team

A Sunrise Start for the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Race
The 2010 edition of this most iconic of sailing events will definitely appeal to the early risers amongst us and as Lea Bennett, Club Secretary for the ISC points out, "Whilst the tides on the day are indeed dictating a very early start, it also means that the majority of competitors will hopefully cross the finish line earlier in the day and, with luck and a following wind, be able to enjoy rather more of the shore side hospitality that's on offer in the J.P. Hull & Humber First Across The Scoring Gate
Despite chasing hard, both Uniquely Singapore and Cork were unable to catch Hull & Humber before the gate, crossing at 0819 and 0911GMT respectively to take the final points.
Failing to make the gate in time, but more determined than ever to score a hat trick by taking a third consecutive victory in Clipper 09-10, is Team Finland.
Whilst this morning has brought points and smiles to the faces of three of the teams, the crew on board Qingdao have had a much more difficult time of it. A crash gybe has reminded all on board of the potential dangers of ocean racing as skipper, Chris Stanmore-Major, explains.
"What do we fear most? For the crew of the Dragon Wagon one of the deepest darkest fears is of a crash gybe leading to a broach to leeward.
"This morning on Qingdao one of our demons has been laid to rest and was a quiet, understated affair in the end. As I exited the companionway the scene was one of confused consternation as those new to the boat battled to understand why the kite, so commonly seen heading away from the steering station, had now turned attention around and was trying to make its way aft.
"A few commands to take in the slack on the mainsheet, ease the preventer and sheet on the kite, a turn of the wheel and we made our escape unscathed, save the knock to our speed and pride.
"What had caused this little dice with destruction? A moment's distraction perhaps, a misjudgement made on a single wave, our review today may reveal the process but it's irrelevant. What it has done is pointed out to those in the crew who perhaps might have begun to get complacent..."

Hull & Humber, 2186nm to leg finish
Vintage Yawl Sanyo Maris Wins Lord Howe Island Race - Again!
Sanyo Maris had twelve and a half hours to sail the final 68 nautical miles of the 414 nm race today to take IRC honours and she did it with just under three hours to spare, crossing the finish line off Lord Howe's pristine coral lagoon at 16:09:43 hours this afternoon.
The 9.27 metre yawl, built of Huon pine in Hobart 51 years ago by the legendary Jock Muir for the equally legendary marine artist Jack Earl, appeared from the south this afternoon, sailing to windward below towering Mount Lidgard and Mount Gower in a light northerly breeze.
The crew were so confident of victory they dropped the headsail before they even crossed the finish line.
Kiernan, who owns the classic yacht in partnership with Lord Howe Island identity John Green and two grandchildren of Jack Earl, this year sailed the race with a crew of New Zealanders and a 'secret weapon' in the form of the New Zealand-built reaching headsail.
His next objective is to take on the million dollar maxis with a boat he bought for $19,000 from Jack Earl in this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Sailing conditions were ideal for the little yawl, the oldest, smallest and lowest rating (handicapped) boat in the fleet of 14 yachts that set sail from Broken Bay, north of Sydney last Saturday - close reaching with some spinnaker runs in moderate northerly breezes all the way. She maintained a near constant 5.5 knots through the voyage.
On IRC corrected times, Sanyo Maris won from CYCA member Dennis Cooper's Murray Burns Dovell 36 Amante and Greg Zyner's Radford 12 Copernicus from Manly Yacht Club. AFR Midnight Rambler placed fourth and line honours winner, Ocean Affinity, a Martens 49 skippered by Stewart Lewis from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, placed fifth.
In the PHS division, another Queensland yacht, Peter Lewis' Holland/Cole-designed 40-footer Charlie's Dream, took out top handicap honours from the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club entrant Reflection, a 10.4m Groupe Finet design, and the veteran Gosford Sailing Club's Polaris of Belmont, Chris Dawe's Cole 43 which won this division in 2008. -- Peter Campbell
