World Sailing 2020 Annual Conference
World Sailing's 2020 Annual Conference will be held as a virtual session from 15 October through to 1 November 2020. The Conference will include 11 Committee, 11 Sub-committee and three Commission meetings. World Sailing's Council, the main decision-making body of the world governing body, will meet across four sessions on 30 and 31 October followed by the General Assembly on 1 November.
All meetings will be held using BlueJeans video conferencing technology. There are two versions of the system: BlueJeans Events and BlueJeans Meetings.
Meetings hosted by Events, including the Council meetings and General Assembly, will be live streamed on World Sailing's YouTube Channel. The livestream is available to any member of the public to watch and observe. The participating delegates will be inside the technology and will be briefed on best practice.
Those held via Meetings can include a limited number of observers based on the observer policy. The recording of these meetings will be available to view on YouTube 24-hours after the meeting has concluded.
Apart from a small number of closed meetings, those conducted at World Sailing's Annual Conference are open to observers. These observers are able to sit in and listen to the meeting but are not able to engage or speak to the Committee. This is reserved for Committee Members, World Sailing staff supporting the meeting and invited presenters.
Participants, such as Committee Members, Council Members, Staff and guest speakers, in meetings held using the Events system will be invited directly into the software. Those wishing to observe will be able to do so via YouTube.
Persons who wish to address a meeting must contact the Executive Office prior to the meeting in order to have this approved by the Chair. They will then be sent an invitation via BlueJeans to the meeting. The decision of the Chair is final.
The URLs outlined below are unique to each individual meeting at the 2020 Annual Conference. They may be shared, embed and promoted across all World Sailing stakeholder channels. On sailing.org, a news story for each meeting will be created with the meeting embedded on the web page.
These meetings are publicly available via the links below. These meetings will be hosted using BlueJeans Events. All participants will be inside the technology based on an approved Committee Chair / Committee Manager participant list.

Female Two Handed 'Magenta Project' Round Ireland Sailing Record Tracker
Track Ireland's female 675 nautical mile round Ireland sailing record bid below as the Figaro3 races 675-nautical miles against the clock to establish a new Irish sailing record.
The foiling Figaro 3 Magenta Project - double-handed by Greystone's Pamela Lee and Cat Hunt - blasted south from the official Round Ireland Records line, which is eight miles long between the Kish Lighthouse and the Dun Laoghaire East Pier Lighthouse.
As they zoom down the east coast of Ireland through Tuesday morning, the fresh to strong nor'wester is expected to veer and freshen further, and it should be veering even more as they head along the south coast as Wednesday moves in. It may then ease as they sweep past the Fastnet and find themselves reaching in an easterly in the early stages of the west coast, but a new veering means the disturbed waters of the Atlantic will provide the challenge of continuing to sail fast in a period of very favourable sou'easterly, yet without breaking boat or crew in the inevitable confused seas.
Unfortunately late on Thursday what is now a sou'easter is forecast to back, and in time they may find themselves with a dead beat along the North Coast. But a further backing could ease things once Inishtrahull is passed, and they might just find themselves with a beam reach in an easterly from Rathlin down past the South Rock and on back to Dublin Bay.
It may be a clean slate challenge, but with the weather in such an "interesting" and inevitably volatile sequence, any sailor will find it fascinating to follow, particularly the thousands who have now sailed round Ireland - whether racing, cruising or straightforwardly record-breaking – and are well aware of the special challenges which a sailing circuit of our island home can pose. -- WM Nixon

Gdansk, Poland: Finally we have our new 2020 Laser Senior European champions! The 2020 Laser Senior European Championships & Open European Trophy concluded today in Gdansk, Poland, with some last minute surprises!
Everything can happen. That's why we love our sport. And a sort of miracle occurred today on the Radial Women's fleet, where the reigning 2020 World and 2016 Olympic champion Marit Bouwmeester NED (2-1) surpassed our reigning 2019 European champion Anne Marie Rindom DEN (19-16) on this last day and crowned new 2020 Women's Senior European champion for the fourth time in her amazing career.
Anne Marie governed the fleet during the whole event but had a terrible day today, scoring her worst 2 races in the whole championship, ruining the 20 points lead she had this morning.
Marit looked revitalized instead after the Yellow flags penalty received yesterday, and after that DNC she scored her best and awesome 4-1-2-1 results to climb to the top and grab her name on both the Worlds and European titles this year.
What a championship for thse two magnificent sailors. We're so happy to have them together on course and enjoying of their amazing sailing. This sporting battle between them is certainly not finished and will live on at the next 2021 Laser Senior Europeans in Varna, prelude to their maximum goal, the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo!
Vendee Globe: Maintaining altitude
Take-off: tick. Intermittent flight: tick. To achieve steady flight over waves and oceans the loads are almost off the scale. Yet with the help of some brilliant composite engineering, it's happening.
Since the first breathtaking pictures of Jeremie Beyou's Charal in flight there is now plenty of evidence that this impressive display was no one-off party piece. For many in the IMOCA 60 fleet, flying offshore with a seven tonne 60-footer travelling at well over 20 knots in waves while balanced on a giant foil to leeward and a fin to weather is now the new norm.
Little surprise then, that composite experts Gurit have already spent more than 6,000 hours on the various IMOCA 60 projects that they are involved with since the last Vendee Globe. Engineering a structure that can cope with such extreme performance has rarely been so important. Gurit Composite Engineering has been working closely with IMOCA 60s for over 20 years.
Since Ellen MacArthur's famous Kingfisher, which was engineered in collaboration with Humphreys Yacht Design and Owen/ Clarke, the company has amassed considerable experience in this field which has contributed to seven of the eight new boats in this year's Vendee Globe fleet using Gurit materials, while 12 campaigns have engaged Gurit engineers for aspects of their engineering.
Of the new boats in the fleet, Charal, Hugo Boss and DMG Mori carry the signature of Gurit Structural Engineering in collaboration with VPLP yacht design.

Nessie Lives (not really...)
A Loch Ness tourist vessel equipped with a Raymarine sonar has stirred rumours of the long-living monster once again.
Cruise Loch Ness (CLN) captured a sonar image of an object estimated to be 10m long, more than 150m below the surface of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, according to the Daily Record. The image on the Raymarine sonar, distributed by SMG, was spotted by CLN director Ronald Mackenzie, while he was skippering the Spirit of Loch Ness catamaran.
"We have a real state-of-the-art sonar on the new boat. It doesn't lie. It captures what's there," said Ronald.
He said the sighting occurred in the middle of the loch, about 170m down at a point in the loch where the water is 189m deep.
Ronald explained that the image shows dots representing shoals of Atlantic char nearer the surface, with ferox trout deeper down, to put the "at least" 10m object in context.
Sonar expert Craig Wallace said the image could have picked up a sturgeon or a small shoal of fish.
British Yachting Awards 2020 Despite the pandemic, 2020 has been a great year for boat launches and sailing achievements. Indeed, the strength of each category's shortlist gives no hint of wider events. Through innovation, commitment and enthusiasm, the marine industry has adapted and continued to thrive.
Gear manufacturers have continued to impress with innovations across the board. Boat manufacturers have continued to identify niches and create boats that push the boundaries. Sailors, of course, got on the water where they could and put in some remarkable performances, in the professional and amateur spheres.

The RYA Dinghy Show is to be a virtual event for 2021 due to the current escalation of Covid-19.
The show had been due to take place over the weekend of 27-28 February at its new venue, Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Organisers, the RYA says it is now exploring the opportunities for dinghy sailing fans to enjoy highlights of the show from the safety of their homes.
A webinar consultation has shown a substantial majority preferring to postpone until 2022 to due to the high levels of uncertainty around what restrictions may still be in place in February 2021.
"This combined with underlying seasonal risk factors has led us to make the difficult decision to run the event virtually," added Alistair. "Although nothing can fully replace the unique atmosphere of the RYA Dinghy Show, we're committed to giving our visitors an exciting online experience with virtual exhibitors including clubs and classes, expert talks, coaching sessions and much, much more."

After 45 years, Isle of Skye Yachts has closed its doors, a result of a drop-off in business due to Covid-19 regulations.
Owners Mark and Charmian Entwistle took on the business in 1998 on the retirement of the previous owner and built up the fleet of five classic yachts to 11 modern yachts.
However, they say that despite having reduced the size of the business at the end of the 2019 season, the global crisis has led to a large number of cancelled bookings.
"The company ended up with three weeks of bookings able to proceed in spite of starting the year with 14+ weeks lined up," explained Charmian.
The business was founded 45 years' ago at Armadale, Isle of Skye, by the late Charles Barrington.
Some of the company's assets have been off sold separately and the boatyard at Ardvasar is still flourishing in a slightly way under the ownership of Peter Fowler.
Charmian concluded: "On a personal basis we would like to thank the thousands of different customers who have come sailing from Armadale over the last 22 years.
"Not forgetting, thanks also to our staff, owners of managed yachts and everyone else who has contributed to the success of the business over the years."

The European Boating Industry (EBI) and Boot Düsseldorf have extended their partnership by two years to help the international boating sector launch innovations and technical developments at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is battering economies everywhere.
Boot Düsseldorf project director Petros Michelidakis says the partnership, which includes the annual industry Breakfast Meeting at the trade fair and providing advice about industry issues, "enables us to maintain effective contact with the industry… where the latest issues and questions are concerned."
Philip Easthill, secretary general of the Brussels-based EBI, said the partnership also helps to establish key contacts between the industry and EU policy makers to help "safeguard the future of Europe's water sports industry in Europe by focusing on its growth and needs."

Another Canadian boat show has cancelled its 2021 run as a second wave of Covid-19 spreads across the country.
Montreal Boat Show organiser Nautisme Quebec has confirmed the cancellation of its 2021 event, which was scheduled to have been held from February 4-7.
The Montreal In-the-Water Boat Show, held from September 11-13, attracted 2,025 visitors while operating in strict accordance with mandated protocols regarding social distancing, mask wearing and sanitary measures which would be difficult to replicate in an indoor environment.
Quebec remains the most heavily impacted province in Canada, recording 47% of all Covid-19 cases and 62% of all deaths attributed to Covid-19.

Exhibitors and visitors of trade fairs are business travelers with an important reason to enter Germany
The German Federal Government has decided that trade fair participants are generally considered business travelers with good cause to enter Germany. In addition, the current corona entry regulation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (CoronaEinrVO) applies.
When entering Germany, trade fair exhibitors must submit a confirmation of participation from the trade fair organizer as proof. boot exhibitors have received an admission document which they can download from the Online Order System (OOS).
Visitors to the trade fair must present their admission ticket to boot and also an appointment for a business meeting with at least one exhibitor. This regulation applies with immediate effect and without exception to all trade fair participants from countries that are currently not included in the German positive list or are included under conditions on the German positive list. Further information on this subject can be found in the FAQ of the Federal Ministry of the Interior under the question "Which skilled and highly qualified foreign workers are permitted to enter Germany from a non-European foreign country?":

Antigua and Barbuda is providing much needed space for workers throughout the world, with the launch of its Nomad Digital Residence (NDR) Programme, that allows persons to work safely and with ease from the twin-island paradise for as long as two years with the new NDR visa.
Announced by Antigua and Barbuda's Prime Minister, The Honourable Gaston Browne, the Nomad Digital Residence programme is designed to attract persons who can meet the requirements of their employers or their clients, while working remotely.
Under the programme, eligible persons can live and move freely throughout Antigua and Barbuda for up to two years, and benefit from Antigua and Barbuda's no personal income tax status.
"Antigua and Barbuda is in a unique position to offer the 'Nomad Digital Residence' programme. Our very small number of Covid-19 cases and our effective system of containing community spread, makes our country one of the safest environments in the world", said Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

IBEX panel: Attendees included nearly 3,000 registered from 25 countries
The global marine industry came together last week for the annual IBEX show, albeit in front of individual computer screens scattered around the world, but the show producers are touting a success.

The Valencia Boat Show (VBS), which this year will be held virtually from October 28 to November 1, has broken its own record of exhibitors that it set in 2019.
According to the show's organiser, 123 nautical companies from Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Italy, the UK, USA, France, Turkey, Austria and others have already reserved their stand 20 days before the show starts.
Last year the event, held in La Marina de València, drew 94 exhibitors.
The 2020 Virtual VBS will split exhibitors and collaborating companies into 13 different areas: motorboats; sailing boats; catamarans, engines and electronics, equipment and accessories; marinas and dry docks; sailing schools, charter companies and accessories; nautical activities, diving, institutions and associations; Superyacht Dock - exclusive superyacht area; Media dock, which will bring together specialised media; and Innova Dock, the innovation and applications area.
In addition, the event will feature an entire area dedicated to nautical tourism in the Valencian Community, with more than 30 exhibitors inside, an event and conference area inside the Veles e Vents building, and three areas with painting and photography exhibitions.
