World Sailing Elections to commence on Friday 9 October
Voting in the 2020 Election of World Sailing's Officers will begin on Friday 9 October 2020 when voting packs are distributed to World Sailing's Member National Authorities.
World Sailing's Election Committee, chaired by Philip Cotton and supported by Melanie Willmore and David Kellett, have issued a reminder of the voting procedures for all voting countries which can be found here.
KPMG (UK) LLP have been appointed as the Independent Scrutineer and will accept and validate votes on behalf of World Sailing.
Voting in the first round of balloting will close at 1500hrs UTC on Friday 16 October 2020.
In the event that no Presidential candidate receives more than 50% of the votes in the first round, two further rounds are scheduled for 20-23 October and 26-29 October to conduct run-off votes.
The results of the election will be announced during the General Assembly by the Election Committee on 1 November.
If there is a tie between any Vice-Presidential candidates, a run-off vote will commence on 1 November and conclude on 4 November.

RHKYC stages new-look China Coast Race Week
Despite the challenges of Covid-19, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) is going ahead with this year's China Coast Race Week, which starts on Friday.
This year's race week comprises the annual China Coast Regatta (October 9-11) and the inaugural China Coastal Race, which starts on October 16 and will be a Category Three race of about 150nm within Hong Kong waters.
The China Coast Race Week traditionally concludes with a race to Hainan or Vietnam, but RHKYC created the China Coastal Race due to the uncertainty of open borders and quarantine regulations.
RHKYC is still organising the 30th Rolex China Sea Race, scheduled to start on March 31, 2021. This year's edition was deferred by a year due to Covid-19 and in 2022 the race will return to its original sequence of being held in 'even' years.
A Category One offshore race, the Rolex China Sea Race starts in Hong Kong harbour and takes competitors 565nm across the South China Sea to Subic Bay in the Philippines. Rolex has title sponsored RHKYC's flagship race since 2008, having been a partner of the Club since 2007.

Etchells British National Championships
16 Etchells came to the line for the British National Championships on a cold blustery September day (26th and 27th) with 20 kts of wind out of the north-west.
In race 1 Ante Razmilovic (Brian Hammersley / Andrew Mills) managed to get to the right of the pack, picked up a nice shift off the shore and with his heavy airspeed blew through into the lead. Rob Gullan put in an early pitch for the Corinthian title taking top slot in that group in fifth.
Race 2 went to J70 World Champion Paul Ward. Sailing with his American-style, traveller down and tight mainsail leech trim he was never headed. At the windward mark he could have got out of the cold beer such was his lead.
For race 3 of day one the forecast increase in the breeze came to fruition with the peak gust of 27 kn from the north registered. Winner was James Howells. Most encouraging for the fleet was the 3rd place for Jon Warwick and his young team and 4th for Robby Boyd and his youth (under 25) team. Both did fantastically well, in properly hardcore conditions.
The end of day one therefore saw James Howells (Charlie Cumbley / Jamie Lea) and Ante Razmilovic tied first on seven points and only Grant Gordon (Ruairidh Scott / Sophie Scott / James Williamson) close.
The forecast for day two looked very windy in the morning but Predict Wind had a significant drop off from lunchtime and after a two-hour delay on the shore that is how it panned out. James Howells made it two race wins on the trot, with Grant Gordon in second.
There was a lot of bunching at the committee boat in the last race with Grant Gordon's team winning it, standing on for 30 seconds before tacking. Howells and Razmilovic were further down the line having their own private battle. While Grant Gordon extended to one of the biggest leads your reporter has ever seen in the Howells crossed for sixth-place with Razmilovic in seventh, which allowed Grant Gordon to leapfrog into second overall.
Corinthian National Champion was John Warwick and his young team in sixth, while, with their fantastic fourth in the last race Azat Ulutas (Seun Williams / Jesse Opokuware / Harry Blowers) from Greig City Academy took the youth prize at ninth overall, a truly great result for such a young team. -- Laurence Mead

Melges 20 World Championship, on day 2 Brontolo strengthens the leadership
Cala Galera: Today has been an intense day in the waters of Cala Galera for the Melges 20 fleet which today completed three more races valid for the scoreline of the 2020 World Championship, organized by Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario together with Melges 20 Class and Melges Europe, bringing to four the total number of regattas completed so far.
With 10 knots of steady breeze coming from 320°, Brontolo by Filippo Pacinotti is also today best boat of the day: the impeccable tactical choices by Manuel Weiller allow the crew of Pacinotti to close the regattas of today in first, second and then again first position respectively, consolidating the first place in the general ranking.
Sease by Franco Loro Piana also shines today: with 2-4-3 partial scores, the crew gains important points in the ranking, climbing up to second place, 9 points behind the leaders. Third place for Dario Levi and his Fremito d'Arja (6-5-2 partial scores).
In fourth place we find Raya by Matteo Marenghi Vaselli, winner of today's second regatta, who in turn leaves behind the multi-champions onboard Russian Bogatyrs, who close the top-five with 20 points in total.
Benedetta Iovane, in her first season aboard the Melges 20, leads the Corinthian ranking, occupying an excellent provisional seventh place in the overall standings.
The third day of racing of the Melges 20 World Championship will start Friday at 12.00; the Race Committee chaired by the Spanish PRO Maria Torrijo will be able to start a maximum of three races.
SailGP Launches Race For The Future
SailGP will use its global platform to accelerate change to a cleaner and more inclusive future via a newly launched initiative: Race for the Future.
Having postponed its second season events due to the pandemic, SailGP is building on the foundations set in year one when it launched a gender-balanced youth and community outreach program - SailGP Inspire - and set the initial goal of winning the race to zero carbon.
SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts said: "We have a responsibility and a purpose that goes beyond our compelling entertainment proposition. Sustainable development is paramount to the world's future, and through SailGP, we have a unique platform to accelerate change. Race for the Future takes us from intention to action, with a real ability to effect environmental and social transformation within and outside of the sport.
"Having a zero-carbon footprint and a diverse staff is not enough; we've challenged ourselves to think bigger and broader. Race for the Future, Part 2 will be released on October 20 with details regarding female athlete inclusion in the league for Season 2, as well as robust initiatives to fully integrate diversity, equity and inclusion in every part of the business.

This year, METSTRADE would have proudly celebrated the 30th continuous running of the DAME (Design at METSTRADE) Awards. The reputation of the DAME Awards has been built over decades upon a rigorous process conducted by an international jury of renowned reputation, who meet in Amsterdam to make their final assessments.
Given the many logistical and safety challenges posed by the pandemic, the decision has been taken to defer the 30th event to 2021 and assess a field of entries new to market between 1 September 2019 and 16 November 2021 at that time. But entries are now open for a special one-off DAME competition to be awarded at the virtual METSTRADE Connect event on 10 December 2020. The DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award will celebrate the efforts of global equipment manufacturers that have kept design at the forefront of their development efforts during the pandemic challenges of 2020.
The eligibility for this award is any product new to market, or any significant R&D project conducted by an equipment manufacturer worked on between 1 January-28 October 2020 that has been progressed, despite the constraints of COVID-19. The Jury will also take into account design-led initiatives that have improved the safety of the business concerned or the community in which it is based. The scope for entry is wide-ranging, covering all sizes of company and types of activity. The Jury will use analytical assessment as well as emotional response to find the winner and also name any commended entries.
Submission to the DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award is free and open to anyone who had committed to METSTRADE 2020 as an exhibitor.

Beginning in January, 2021, the Offshore Racing Association (ORA) will issue handicap ratings for the nearly 500 boats in the Gulf Yachting Association's PHRF fleet, which is spread from western Florida to New Orleans. GYA fleet members will receive PHRF ratings for two course configurations and light- or medium-strength winds, each based on the ORA's proprietary velocity prediction program (VPP). They will also receive benchmark ratings for spinnaker and non-spinnaker configurations to set class breaks.
The certificates will have a total of five spinnaker and five non-spinnakers ratings. Race organizers will have the option of applying the rating with a windward-leeward or random-leg configuration and wind strength for a given race—or they can select from the benchmark ratings, which average the other four.
Using its VPP technology, ORA Rating Services provides custom services to help PHRF raters and race committees. It can also assist with scoring, certificate processing, reporting, training, and other services to help PHRF Fleets.

The second day of the 60th Genoa International Boat Show opened with the traditional Boating Economic Forecast, this year dedicated to the Resilience of the Yachting Industry. Which scenarios await the yachting sector in the age of the new normal?, organised by the Italian Marine Industry Association's Market Analysis Department, with the Edison Foundation, the Italian Leasing Association and EBI - European Boating Industry.
Speakers included Saverio Cecchi, President of the Italian Marine Industry Association, Carlo Mescieri, President of the Italian Leasing Association, Marco Fortis, Vice President of the Edison Foundation - Cattolica University, Francesco Tilli, Chief External Relations Officer for SIMEST, and Philip Easthill, Secretary General of EBI - European Boating Industry. Moderating the event was Stefano Pagani Isnardi, Managing Director of the Italian Marine Industry Association's Market Analysis Department.
Yachting in Figures, the book published by the Italian Marine Industry Association, under the patronage of the Italian Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport, now at its 41st edition, has been transformed from an annual statistics report into a series. "With the entry of Monitor, the preliminary report published halfway through the boating year, the historical autumnal publication has now taken on the title LOG. - explained Stefano Pagani Isnardi - Just like a log indicated a boat's speed, LOG will show the yachting industry's market trend, accurately analysing the data as a whole, in this case with the data from the end of 2019".
+17%, +19%, +13%, +10%, +12%: this shows the incredible growth sustained by the yachting industry over the past five years. 2019 also closed with a double-figure increase, bringing the sector's revenue to 4.78 billion euros (+12% compared to 2018), almost double since the lower numbers in 2013/2014 and greater than predictions made in February.
Employment is also on the rise (for a total of 23,510, +5.4% compared to 2018, part of the over 180,000 employed throughout the supply chain), as is the industry's contribution to Italy's GDP (2.22‰, up 11.9% from the previous year). The revenue is divided up as follows: 64.4% shipbuilding, 27% equipment and 8.6% motors.

Friday's Cocktail: Pumpkin Toddy
Yes, I know... I feel the same way. There's WAY too much pumpkin spice out there this time of year. Briefly showing my inner troglodyte here: I find the concept, let alone the ingestion, of a pumpkin spice half-caf latte a crime against coffee growers.
That horrid brew is my wife's fall favorite. I'm willing to pick it up at the drive through but I'm sure to additionally order a triple espresso so that the barista knows that I'm picking up the orange-tinged gender-orientation-changing concoction for someone else.
But I do love pumpkin pie. And hot toddy's. So this one has my full approval (a bit of field testing was required of course).

Ingredients
1 ounce Laird's bonded apple brandy
1/2 ounce Rittenhouse rye whiskey
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce Deep Mountain Grade B maple syrup
1 tsp Libby's pumpkin puree
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1/2 ounce boiling water
Garnish: grated cinnamon
Steps
Add all the ingredients except the water to a preheated mug and stir to combine.
Top with 5 oz boiling water and stir.
