Waka Jawaka Walks Away From the Competition in Melges IC37 Class
With just a few days to get up to speed in a new one-design class, Michael Goldfarb (Seattle, Wash.) knew exactly where to focus his Waka Jawaka crew's energy.

"We came four days before the event started," says Goldfarb, who has partnered with Laura Grondin (West Hartford, Conn.) to charter a Melges IC37 for the abbreviated fall season. "All we did was set marks and go around them: tack, tack, set, jibe, jibe, jibe, douse. Three days of that, because my view is if you can't go around the corners, nothing else good is going to happen for you."

After struggling off the starting line on Day 1, it all came together today for Waka Jawaka with three firsts and a third. The performance vaulted Goldfarb and Grondin from fifth to first with eight races in the books. The lead over second, Qubit, skippered by Chris Lewis (Seabrook, Texas), is 9 points with Day 1 co-leader Pacific Yankee in third, three points further back. There were a number of protests in the class, so the overall standings may shift slightly overnight, but nothing is going to displace Waka Jawaka for the moment.

While Goldfarb is new to the Melges IC37 class, he is a veteran sportboat sailor, with success in Melges 24s, J/70s and Farr 30s. He also made sure to pull in some experienced talent, namely Shaun and Steven Burke (Atlanta, Ga.), who sailed last season in the Melges IC37 class and brought valuable knowledge to Waka Jawaka program. Goldfarb was also quick to credit the New York Yacht Club's charter program.

"I think these are fantastic boats," he says. "They're fun to sail, not super tweaky, but they're very even and the yacht club boats are just in amazing condition. We came out here, we chartered and it's like having your own boat."

Williams eyeing seventh Bermuda Gold Cup title

Ian Williams and Team GAC Pindar will bid for a record seventh world match racing title at the same venue where they savoured their maiden success competing at that level more than a decade ago.

The British professional sailing team made a major breakthrough on the World Match Racing Tour after winning the 2006 Argo Group Gold Cup in Hamilton Harbour before being crowned as multiple world match racing champions.

"I remember winning back in 2006, my first major event win," Williams told The Royal Gazette.

"What an honour it was and still is to have my name on such an historic and prestigious trophy."

The Bermuda Gold Cup will be contested Oct. 26-30. The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and World Match Racing Tour together announced that the celebratory 70th event will also host the 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship as sanctioned by World Sailing.

Marina di Scarlino: South-Easterly breeze sets the pace for the first day of racing for the Melges 32 fleet in the Gulf of Follonica and the youngest crew in the fleet, Gordon Nickel and and Maximilian Stein's Homanit, immediately takes control of the ranking.

Confirming the very strong growth experienced since the beginning of the season, the young German crew today imposed its pace on the whole fleet thanks to tactical choices that were sometimes different from the rest of the fleet, but which proved to be successful, gaining the top of the ranking with partial scores of 3-1-4 and 8 points in total.

In second place, two points late, we find the newly elected World Champions aboard Martin Rentjes' Caipirinha, today authors of the first bullet of the Tuscan series (1-3-6 today's partials). Provisional bronze for the new entry in the Melges 32 fleet, Russian Bogatyrs by Igor Rytov, who after years of experience and successes in the Melges 20 Class, this time decided to test himself with the Melges 32, one of the most established and competitive one design on the international sailing scene.

Winner of the third and final regatta of the day is Dumbovit by Alessandro Lotto and Flavio Campana, who with partials scores of 8-7-1 occupies the fourth place of the general standings.

A maximum of eight races are to be completed by Saturday.

The Futures Program
With three years to go until the start of the first edition of The Race Around, the organisers have announced the most innovative sustainability program in offshore racing.

In a sailing first, the short-handed, multi-staged, round the world Class40 boat race will offer entry fee reduction incentives for competitors actively reducing the carbon impact of the boat building or refit process for the 2023 event.

The Futures Program will examine the latest sustainable innovations in boat building, including Life Cycle Assessments (LCA's) and the use of recyclable fibres and resins through a series of stakeholder workshops.

Commercial and academic partnerships will help The Race Around set a benchmark for understanding the carbon footprint of the entire boat building process and assess its financial impact. This insight will then be shared with key industry players.

The data is also to be used to set, for the first time in offshore racing, a new class and industry standard through the introduction of a mandatory carbon budget for boats taking part in the second edition of the race in 2027.

Seawanhaka Cup June 2nd - 5th 2021: NOR Now Available
The Long Beach Yacht Club is excited to announce that the Notice of Race has been posted for the Seawanhaka International Challenge Cup, which will take place June 2nd - 5th 2021, in the waters off Long Beach, California. Any qualifying yacht club wishing to participate should complete a Request for Invitation and return it to LBYC as soon as possible, the entries are limited.

The Seawanhaka Cup is an historic international challenge for the purpose of promoting small yacht racing and developing the Corinthian spirit among competing yachtsmen. It is considered to be the oldest yachting trophy originated in the United States that is still in active competition. The first challenge was sailed in Oyster Bay, New York in 1895. The Seawanhaka Cup is a match racing event open to international teams who are all regular members of the yacht club they are representing and a national of the country where the club resides.

The Long Beach Yacht Club won the 47th challenge for the Seawanhaka Cup in 2019, sailed in Match 40s in Oyster Bay. Previous winners include the Royal Yacht Squadron (UK), which is one of the most famous yacht clubs in the world and the host of the original challenge of what is now the America's Cup. Other international winners came from Scotland, Tasmania, Norway, and Quebec.

The Long Beach Yacht Club now has the tremendous honor, as the current holder of the Cup to defend it on its home waters. With the race management skills and hospitality that the Long Beach Yacht Club has enshrined by hosting the Congressional Cup for 55 years, it is expected that it will provide another international caliber match race event in 2021.

Young Azzurra, Debut In The Persico 69F Cup With Victory
A race (won) was enough to Young Azzurra to seal the victory in the ITAS Assicurazioni Grand Prix 2.2 of Persico 69F Cup. In a Malcesine with bad wind - a very unusual condition for the location - the hull with the Under 25 team with Ettore Botticini, Federico Colannino, Francesca Bergamo and Erica Ratti, launched by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, debuted beating both younger and expert sailors, and showing the potential of a mature, focused and trained team: "We're happy - says Botticini - as I've already said, we trained a lot on this boat, but on our own. In this event we felt what it means to be in the fray. Our balance and our training are working, and this is great news". The team will be racing also in the next stage, Grand Prix 3.1, scheduled in Malcesine from October 1st to 3rd, wishing for a better wind, typical of Lake Garda.

Second place of ITAS Assicurazioni Grand Prix 2.2 goes to FlyingNikka 47, looking for important points for the overall classification of the circuit. The third place goes to RHKYC Team Agiplast, the Hong Kong athletes that, after a long permanence in Italy to train and race on the Persico 69F, are getting ready to fly back home, where they'll find their monotype set and ready to welcome them for new training sessions, with the goal to be in 2021 circuit.

Industry News
French marine industries federation FIN (la Fédération des Industries Nautiques) today announced that it has been forced to cancel the 2020 edition of the Paris Boat Show (Nautic Paris) following the latest announcement from the French Health Minister.

Minister of Health Olivier Véran announced yesterday a series of more restrictive measures for Paris and in particular the lowering of the maximum number of people allowed at major events from 5,000 to 1,000. FIN says the new rule, and the overall health context in general, no longer allows the organiser to reasonably consider holding the boat show this year.

FIN says it plans to launch a digital event called "tourism, territories, nautical destinations and innovation" in the coming days.

The national competition on nautical innovation which is usually held at the Paris show should also be able to benefit from a digital version this year.

According to FIN, the French nautical sector comprises more than 5,500 companies, 45,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs in the regions.


Sailboat construction icon Ron Moore is joining forces with Yachtsman and Businessman Blaine Rorick and CFO Samuel Willner to form Moore Sailboats Inc., a new entity which will produce the all-new Alan Andrews-designed Moore 33 sailboat.

Andrews name is synonymous with a multitude of record-setting and race-winning ULDB sleds like Locomotion, It's OK, Cheval, Alchemy, to modern TP 52's and last year's Cabo winner Fast Exit; but he started his iconic career with a 30-footer and has since designed a wide range of racers and cruisers.

Andrews' design skills in combination with Moore's renowned manufacturing expertise will deliver exactly what sailing needs now - a high-quality, mid-sized racer that exudes the designer's signature graceful lines and elegant style but is just as focused on performance and speed.

The trailerable – yes, trailerable – sloop will be offered with options tailored for distance racing with a four-person crew or for buoy, day, or coastal racing with a crew of up to seven or eight. Hull numbers one and two are scheduled for release in the spring of 2021.

Earlier this year, Rorick, a long-time competitive sailor, and former yacht broker met Andrews to see if a vintage Moore 30 could be modified for offshore racing. That boat, so far ahead of its time, baffled PHRF rating officials who would not let it race. By the end of the initial meeting, the concept to build the new Moore 33 was born.

"It's going to be screaming fast, capable of hitting speeds in the 20-knot range; long-distance capable but just as competitive in buoy and class racing competitions," said Rorick. The Moore 33 can be configured to meet US SER requirements for offshore racing with key features planned for one-design, PHRF, and measurement-rule racing.


Restrictions have been inaugurated to stop boats sailing in an area of the northwest tip of Spain because of a series of attacks on boats by Orca whales. Several attacks have occurred, causing boats to be crippled and crew made anxious by the incidents.

As a result, the Spanish marine authorities have imposed a ban on small boats sailing on a near 60-mile stretch of the country's Atlantic coast between Ferrol and Estaca de Bares Cape in Galicia. A number of theories have been put forward for the attacks, but none which really explain the reasons why the Orcas have taken to attacking the boats.

To date some 30 attacks have been recorded mostly on fibreglass yachts and all in the same area close to Spain's northwest tip. In several of the incidents rudders have been damaged and it has resulted in a number of rescue operations to get crew ashore safely.

In addition to the attacks on the northwest tip of Spain, there has also been a number around the south coast of Spain.


Garmin UK and Ireland today announces it is supporting British challenger INEOS TEAM UK in their America's Cup bid in Auckland, New Zealand. INEOS TEAM UK aims to make history next year by being the first British team to bring the Cup back to British soil in its 170-year history. The team will be using a range of Garmin technology, including its new fēnix 6 Pro Solar smartwatches and Edge 1030 Plus GPS bike computers to enhance their athletes' performance on and off the water.
