Timothee Petetin wins Mediterranean OK Dinghy Championship
Timothee Petetin, from the Societe Nautique de Bandol, has won the 2020 Mediterranean OK Dinghy Championship in Bandol, from Julien Dejugnat and Pascal Tetard.

The event in Bandol was supposed to be the final event in the 2020 Euro League and the inaugural OKDIA Autumn Trophy, but the resurgence in COVID-19 in France, and travel restrictions across Europe, caused all the visiting sailors to pull out and the Autumn Trophy to be cancelled. However the club went ahead with the Mediterranean Championship, with 17 boats from all over France taking part.

Laurent Hay, from La Rochelle, dominated the opening day with three bullets, but then injury forced him to retire from the event, which left the top wide open.

Petetin then took three race wins to lead the series, and set up a final day that promised to be open and windy.

It was a very successful championship thanks to particularly good weather conditions and much appreciated by all competitors, but also a great credit of the volunteer team of the Societe Nautique de Bandol.

COVID did not prevent the event but surely mitigated its magnitude. Once again the 'Bandolais spot' lived up to its claims: wind, sun, hot water and a friendly atmosphere.

The class plans to be back in 2021, when hopefully the inaugural Autumn Trophy will finally be held.

The Nautor's Swan Experience
In spite of the restrictions imposed by the ongoing global pandemic, the team at Nautor's Swan is offering to bring some relief for Swan owners and their crew, along with fans and aficionados of the famous brand. From 13 to 20 October, the Nautor's Swan Experience is scheduled to be held at the impressive Marina di Scarlino in Baia Scarlino on the Tuscan seaboard, host to the recent Swan Tuscany Challenge, which was received with great enthusiasm by participating owners.

Comprising two overlapping events, the inaugural Swan One Design Worlds and the Scarlino Private Boat Show, this unique occasion will offer a 360 degree insight into the world of Swan.

Racing at the Swan One Design Worlds will be over four days, finishing on Saturday, 17 October. The four fleets are well represented, and expectations are high for an exceptional contest on the water. Some 15 ClubSwan 50s will provide the headline act. Two former world champions are present, Dmitry Rybolovlev' Skorpios (RUS/2019) and Stefan Heidenreich's Onegroup(GER/2018), along with a host of other highly competitive rivals, including Ross Warburton's Perhonen (GBR) and Sonke Meier-Sawatzki's Niramo (GER) respectively second and third at the 2019 ClubSwan 50 Worlds.

Eight ClubSwan 36s are currently slated to be on the start-line, including ThirtySix, winners of the first regatta to feature the nascent class a year ago in October. In the Swan 45 class, Lennard van Oeveren and Motions (NED), together with Tea Ekengren-Sauren and Blue Nights (FIN) will be looking to improve on their second and third places at the Swan 45 Worlds last year. Seven entries are expected. And, finally, five ClubSwan 42s will compete in what looks the most open of divisions. Natalia, victors at the The Nations League 2019 may hold the edge.

Maintaining altitude- Gurit
Gurit Take-off... tick. Intermittent flight... tick. Steady flight over waves and oceans... the loads are almost off the scale. Yet with the help of some brilliant composite engineering it's happening

Since the first breathtaking pictures of Jeremie Beyou's Charal in flight there is now plenty of evidence that this impressive display was no one-off party piece. For many in the Imoca 60 fleet, flying offshore with a seven tonne 60-footer travelling at well over 20kts in waves while balanced on a giant foil to leeward and a fin to weather is now the new norm. Little surprise then, that composite experts

Gurit have already spent more than 6,000 hours on the various Imoca 60 projects that they are involved with since the last Vendee Globe.

In the SB20 UK National Championships, seven windward leeward races have now been completed. John Pollard's Xcellent is top of the leaderboard, Simon Russell's Sportsboatworld is second. McAdam & Whelan's Breaking Bod is third.

Simon Russell looks after the SB20 Fleet as Director of Sportsboats World. "John (Pollard) has been dominating in the UK SB20 fleet for a number of years, but we like to think we have given his team a run for their money," commented Simon. "With the Covid-19 situation, most of the SB20s have not been racing this year, so it's fantastic to see a large fleet getting together. Breaking Bod is also going well and there is really close racing right through the class."

Introducing the Robert Fitzgerald Classics Sapling
Oakcliff Sailing Board Member Donn Costanzo and Oakcliff are excited to announce a new Classics Sapling Scholarship Fund, supporting young people with an interest in sailing and working on classic yachts.

Donn was inspired to create the fund after he met Ted Fitzgerald while looking for a boat to retire on. Ted was selling his father's 1928 Alden Schooner Talisman in Maryland, which Donn went to look at. The boat had all the earmarks of an Alden design and was in slight disrepair but, in Donn's mind, worth saving. Ted's father Robert Fitzgerald had sailed the boat all over the world, from France to Russia and back to the states. When Robert passed away, Ted, who was not a sailor, attempted to do upkeep on the boat, but it became too expensive and time consuming. So Ted reluctantly decided to put the boat on the market.

Although Donn decided the boat was too big of a project for himself, he was committed to helping Ted sell the classic yacht. He listed the Alden Schooner as a classic in Wooden Boat Magazine, garnering a number of calls and interested buyers. After sorting through all the interest, Donn was able to find Ted the right buyer who put in the work to refurbish and sail the Alden. As a thank you to Donn for his help, Ted sent him a touching thank you note with $1,500 from the sale. "I thought the note was so nice I couldn't send the money back," said Donn. "So I told Ted I would match his $1,500 and create a fund, the Robert Fitzgerald Talisman scholarship, at Oakcliff." Donn worked with Dawn Riley to craft a scholarship for a summer or fall sapling interested in the classics. Donn is continuing to fundraise and look for donors to the scholarship fund in order to make this a yearly program at Oakcliff.

YJA MS Amlin Gala Awards Dinner 2020 Cancelled
With regret the YJA MS Amlin Gala Awards dinner 2020 has been cancelled alongside a difficult decision taken not to present the Yachting Journalists' Association's Yachtsman of the Year, Young Sailor of the Year or Young Blogger of the Year Awards in September.

With consideration to the fact that Coronavirus is still spreading around communities, as well as the current social distancing guidelines in force, the committee have decided that hosting a dinner with several hundred prominent figures from the leisure marine industry is not possible. If an event were to have been held, it would not have been the relaxed, jovial and celebratory event intended.

In what should have been a fantastic year for sailing, with the inclusion of the Tokyo Olympics, Coronavirus has created an unprecedented situation. The postponement and cancellation of so many sailing events has made the 2020 YJA MS Amlin Awards unfeasible. 2021 looks set to be an action packed year with many events already in the calendar and even more rescheduled from 2020 so the competition for the 2021 Awards will be more intense than ever.

2020 has been a difficult year for so many around the world and our thoughts are with all of those who have suffered due to Coronavirus. Both the MS Amlin Boat Insurance team and the YJA committee would like to thank everyone working tirelessly to care and protect those who are vulnerable and also those working on cures and vaccines for Coronavirus. We look forward to the YJA MS Amlin Awards returning in 2021, but stay tuned for a major announcement early next week about a new and exciting initiative from MS Amlin Boat Insurance and the YJA.

Sunreef Yachts is looking to hire more than 200 people at its shipyard in Gdansk

Poland's Sunreef Yachts has announced that it is hiring over 200 new employees at its shipyard in Gdansk.

The appointments are needed, says Sunreef, in order to accommodate the continuous growth and development of the company, an increase in orders and the expansion of new production halls.

Most new employees will find work in the brand new Sunreef Yachts shipyard, currently nearing completion and covering an area of almost 50,000sq m. The complete relocation of all offices and production workshops from the historic shipyard located in the city center to the new headquarters is scheduled for April 2021.

The new shipyard already has multiple projects under way, including the world's largest private luxury catamaran – the 49m Sunreef Power, a 100 Sunreef Power, and projects coming from the ECO line.

McConaghy Boats of Australia has formed a strategic partnership with Engel & Völkers, based in Newport Beach, California, making it the company's preferred partner for the sale of McConaghy Multihulls. The announcement comes as McConaghy expands its Multihull range and sets its sights on sales growth in the US.

The McConaghy Multihull range is designed with the performance cruiser in mind, drawing on over 50 years' of yacht-building excellence.

MC60 hull No 3 left the McConaghy shipyard last week and is now en route to its new owners. The third MC60 features a unique exterior colour scheme, just one of many customisable elements available. Also nearing completion at McConaghy is an MC52 and MC55.

On Deck now operates as Harken's eighth foreign subsidiary focused on distribution.

In addition to both the marine and industrial range of Harken, On Deck distributes the brands, Wichard, Marlow, Gotifredi Maffioli, Plastimo, Sta-Lok, Bainbridge, Sunbrella, Dan-fender, McLube, Protect Tapes and Scanstrut among others.

The five On Deck brands Imhoff, Blue Performance, U-Rope, Ruddersafe and Trend Marine, are developed in-house.

Selden Mast confirms it will return as title sponsor for the SailJuice Winter Series for the third year running.

The forthcoming Paris Boat Show to be held from December 5th to 13th and organised by the Federation des Industries Nautiques (FIN) will have a very different layout this year. The exhibition will be reconfigured using Halls 3, 4 and 6 of the Porte de Versailles venue. It will not be using Halls 1 and 2 which it has occupied ever since moving from the CNIT exhibition centre in the 1980s.

This year Hall 3 will be devoted to motorboats and smaller sailboats as well as canoes, fishing equipment, electronics and fittings. Hall 4 will be used to display motorboats, engines, RIBs etc. Hall 6 will house the majority of the sailing boats, charter, tourism, marinas, publishers and the main show stage.

The Porte de Versailles exhibition centre is due for a major refurbishment of Halls 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 and Hall 2 in the coming months.

Given the current situation regarding the Covid pandemic, FIN has announced that during the first week of October it will confirm whether the show will be proceed as planned following further discussions with all the appropriate authorities.

Last week Fabien Metayer, the secretary general of FIN, was interviewed on the national TV channel Europe 1 about the effects of the cancellation of the Cannes and La Rochelle boat shows and he warned that the industry was facing a crisis with the potential loss of 14,000 jobs and appealed for further government support to assist the sector and to ensure the Paris Boat Show was allowed to proceed.
