Contributions welcome, send to ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards Blanca Manchon (ESP) and Tom Slingsby (AUS). Blanca Manchon was nominated for the third time this year and had her family and friends with her at the Awards ceremony here in Athens. "This is really fantastic," said a radiant Manchon on stage as she accepted her trophy and her Rolex timepiece. "As this is my third nomination for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award we were all hoping this would be it… and here I am! I cannot believe it. I worked very hard to get here but I'm young - only 23 years old - so I hope I continue to do many things and maybe I will see you again here someday." Tom Slingsby could not make it to Athens for the ceremony due to electrical storms over Sydney that grounded international flights. Slingsby was surprised when his phone call to "discuss laser sailing", turned into a live announcement from HRH Prince Frederik of Denmark, announcing that he had won the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. "Wow, thank you!" said Slingsby. "I just remember sitting on the rocks in Sydney harbour watching the Olympics. I remember seeing people like Ben Ainslie and Robert Scheidt, two former winners of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards, and thinking, "I want that, that's really what I want to do." To be considered among them today is really an incredibly big honour." The ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award is the highest award a sailor can receive in recognition of his/her outstanding achievements. The Awards are presented annually based on a worldwide selection process that incorporates an open invitation to nominations, followed by a vote amongst the 130 member nations of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). The Awards have been held every year since 1994 and past winners include Peter Blake (NZL), Ellen MacArthur (GBR), Robert Scheidt (BRA) and Russell Coutts (SUI). In 2009 the Awards were presented to Torben Grael (BRA) and Anna Tunnicliffe (USA). Cammas King of the Rhum When he brought the giant 31.5 metres trimaran Groupama 3 across the finish line off Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe today (Tuesday) under perfect sunshine and light breezes Franck Cammas (FRA) clinched the 9th edition of the Route du Rhum - La Banque Postale, the legendary 3542 miles transatlantic race from Saint Malo for solo skippers which takes place every four years. But the course record of 7 days17 hrs 19 mins 6 seconds, which was set in 2006 by Lionel Lemonchois in an exceptional weather pattern still stands. Cammas adds his name to the legend of the 'Rhum' as successor to Mike Birch, Marc Pajot, Philippe Poupon, Florence Arthaud, Laurent Bourgnon, Michel Desjoyeaux and Lionel Lemonchois. * Breaking the finish line off Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe at 02 hrs 52 mins 48 secs today (Wednesday, CET/Paris) ( 01 hrs 52 mins 48 secs GMT/ 21 hrs 52 mins 48 secs local time Tuesday (CET -4hrs)) Francis Joyon on the 29.7m trimaran IDEC took second place in the 9th Route du Rhum-La Banque Postale solo Transatlantic race which started from Saint-Malo, France at 1302hrs (CET) Sunday 31st October. Email: Gutek's Challenge For First All But Ended By Sail Disaster Gutek had even clawed back hundreds of miles in Operon Racing, a much older boat than Brad's Le Pingouin, momentarily taking the lead. But disaster struck for Gutek when one of his halyards which hold up a yacht's sails broke and his gennaker fell into the ocean. The sail was instantly destroyed, leaving Gutek with only a smaller, less effective foresail to replace it with. The loss of the gennaker means that as long as there are no major incidents for Brad in the final 1,500 nautical miles to Cape Town, Gutek's chances of catching him appear all but over. After being within grasp of the American for so long, Gutek has only been able to watch as the distance between the two boats grows. The latest position report put Operon Racing 280 nautical miles behind Le Pingouin. Unaware of the extent of the problems onboard Operon Racing, Brad has continued to push hard towards Cape Town and the ocean sprint one finish line. He has gone for more than 30 hours without sleep, unwilling to drop his guard for even the shortest amount of time. "I've got a westerly wind and I'll have to carefully calculate my gybes," Brad said. "I think going north then down south to Cape Town. But I'll have to keep an eye on the anticyclone. If I get stuck, Gutek will overtake me from below." The latest ETA for Brad is early on Sunday, November 14, with Gutek predicted to arrive in Cape Town a day later on Monday, November 15. Statistics from 12pm UTC position report: Skipper - Boat: distance of arrival (NM) / distance from the leader / 24 hour distance / average speed 24 (knots) 1. Brad Van Liew - The Penguin: 1459 miles / 0 / 322.7 miles / 13.4 knots Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta The event promotes the values and characteristics of Sir Peter Blake; enjoyment of the sport of sailing, team-mateship and care for the environment . While the regatta maintains a youth focus, it caters for all ages and abilities, attracting a good mix of adult sailors. The 2009 event drew more than 400 sailors competing in 17 different classes for two days of intense racing. This year with the Laser North Island Champs regatta being combined with the Sir Peter Blake Regatta over 500 sailors are anticipated, easily making it one of the largest centreboard sailing events in the world. In its nine years the regatta has grown in size, standing and professionalism, creating what is now widely regarded as a world class event on the beaches of Auckland's North Shore. The vision is simple: to deliver an event that is not only the focal point of centreboard sailing in the Southern Hemisphere but also a fantastic social event and a celebration of Sir Peter's life and the sailing legacy we enjoy today. The focal point of the regatta is the awarding of the prestigious Sir Peter Blake Memorial Trophy - going to the most outstanding sailor at the event, with past recipients having progressed to achieve success in international events. www.sportsground.co.nz/torbaysailingclub Musto To Partner Camper In 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race Musto has a proud history of working with the world's best ocean racing teams in order to test and develop the latest construction techniques and fabric technologies. Will Major Sailing Events Be Visible At World Travel Market? Over the last few years, the links between tourism and yacht racing promotion have been growing. There is real evidence to suggest that some professional sailing events do generate net gains for inbound tourism and many series are actively looking for new venues to partner with. It's always interesting to see how the PR matches the reality when it comes to some of these partnerships, and WTM is a great way to see just how integrated the campaigns get. In 2008 and 2009, yachtsponsorship.com visited World Travel Market to see how big sailing/tourism partnerships are being positioned to the travel trade. While governments and cities might be investing heavily, there has been little activation of these deals at places like WTM. The people responsible for selling major events in Valencia, Andalusia, Oman and Miami had no visibility of yacht racing events planned in coming months. New Zealand did a little bit better, with Louis Vuitton Pacific Cup news available from the official Tourism website. In 2010, we will be especially interested to see how Alicante, Barcelona, Perth, Abu Dhabi, Oman, London (Weymouth & Portland) and San Francisco are positioning their destinations. San Diego wouldn't normally be on the list, but a press release sent out last week suggests the RC44 event, scheduled for March 2011 hopes to have a positive tourism impact. See Yachtsponsorship.com: Channel 4 To Broadcast Documentary On 'Britain's Favourite Yacht Race' The two-part programme, produced by Sunset+Vine|APP in association with Channel 4, tells the story of four very different personalities, each with special reasons to compete in the 2010 race. The first part of the documentary takes the viewer into the day-to-day world of each of the four sailors, as they prepare for the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK. The second part is filmed during the race itself with onboard cameras showing the highs and the lows as they compete against a fleet of some 1,700 boats. In addition to Mayor Newsom, Board of Supervisors President Chiu and Supervisor Mirkarimi, the agreement was also initially co-sponsored by Supervisors Michela Alioto-Pier, Carmen Chu, Bevan Dufty, and Sophie Maxwell. "We believe there's no better place on earth than San Francisco Bay to defend the America's Cup and bring millions of new fans from around the world to the oldest international sailing competition," said Mayor Newsom. "This agreement establishes the strong partnership between the City, the BMW Oracle Racing Team and the entire community." Hosting the America's Cup in San Francisco would bring a beautiful backdrop, predictable winds, world-class visitor amenities and enormous spectatorship opportunities that the natural marine amphitheater of the San Francisco Bay offers. In order to provide the Team with reasonable assurances regarding a number of important issues, including the venue plan, key financial terms, sponsorship opportunities, schedule and event logistics, City staff have negotiated a term sheet with the team for endorsement by the Board of Supervisors.
