Boats2020 and MDL Show Cancelled
BOATS2020 and MDL's Ocean Village Boat Show have been cancelled by Southampton City Council.
The news - received on the eve of the show - is due to the rising risk of COVID-19 and growing Government fears.
BOATS2020 organisers British Marine had worked closely with the council to ensure Public Health England requirements were met however the Government announced on Thursday no-more than six people could meet on a social basis from Monday and it is thought this may have swayed the decision.
"We are desperately disappointed that BOATS2020 will no longer be taking place, especially receiving the news at the eleventh hour before opening," said Lesley Robinson, BM CEO. "A tremendous amount of work has been put in and it was heartening to see committed exhibitors on-site today getting geared up for opening."
She added: "British Marine has remained committed to staging this not-for-profit boat show to support the leisure marine industry and our host city of Southampton and I am deeply saddened that it will now no longer be taking place.
"Alongside our exhibitors, we were ready to open a show that exceeded all safety requirements. We are truly perplexed as to why we are unable to run the show at least until Monday in line with the government restrictions imposed yesterday.
"The global pandemic and unprecedented times mean that the latest circumstances are beyond our control. Public health and safety come first and naturally, as the show organiser, British Marine must comply with all guidance."
In a statement, MDL's sales and marketing director said: "As we have done over many weeks, we are working with Southampton City Council's events advisory committee to establish if we can open the show later in the week."
He added: "The company has, from the outset, strived to develop a show that offers visitors an appointment-only, controlled and safe show - specifically designed for serious buyers. This last-minute decision is devastating."
Both shows were due to take place from September 11 - 20.
BM received the news of the cancellation at 6.34pm. A meeting was due to have been held with exhibitor representatives at 9am Friday to reinforce health and safety measures and marshalling arrangements.
BM says it will be communicating with exhibitors, ticket holders and further stakeholders.
The Olympic part of the Kieler Woche started with a day for the specialists in light winds and testing tactics. With the sun shining brightly on the sailors, three races were held in the shifting winds on the courses of the Kieler outer fjord for the 49er, 49erFX, Nacra17 and Finn fleets. In the Laser Radial and Laser Standard, the day ended after two races.

International sailing is back as the annual Kieler Woche regatta is on! Normally held in the last week of June, the delayed event this year features strong fleets, but a lot less of the tourists that typically dominate the Kiel scene.
For us international fans, however, we are proud to bring you an English language broadcast for the second year in a row. Only some fleets are able to be featured, and here is the lineup:
- Thursday September 10th, 13:00 local - 49er qualifying
- Friday September 11th, 11:00 local - Nacra 17
- Saturday September 12th, 11:30 local - 49erFX qualifying
- Sunday September 13th, 11:00 local - 49er Gold then 49erFX Gold
Sailing journalist, Andy Rice, will host the broadcast and 49er and Nacra 17 Class Manager, Ben Remocker, will add commentary. We hope you can join us for a return to racing and can enjoy seeing some Olympic hopefuls and many new racers see where they stand after six months without regattas.
* Finns on Day 1 at Kieler Woche
A small fleet of Finns is taking part in Kieler Woche, many fresh from last week's Europeans in Gdynia. While many had a turn at the front of the fleet, at the end of Day 1, Nicholas Heiner leads with a 1,2,1. Nils Theuninck picked up a 2,4,2 to lie in second while third is Facundo Olezza with a trio of thirds. The second race was won by Max Salminen.
* OK Dinghies on Day 1 at Kieler Woche
Mads Bendix, from Denmark, has taken the early lead in Kieler Woche with a 1,1,2 scoreline after the opening day on Thursday. Three time world champion, Andre Budzien, from Germany, won the final race of the day to sit in second while double European champion, Bo Petersen, from Denmark is third.
A highly competitive fleet of 38 OK Dinghies is taking part is a scaled back Kieler Woche, and after a cold and very wet change over day on Wednesday, Thursday was dry, warm and with plenty of wind. While very shifty, the north-westerly was generally 10-12 knots giving some great racing through the fleet.
Robline is official partner of the Upper Austrian KiteFoil Grand Prix
With the Upper Austrian KiteFoil Grand Prix Traunsee 2020, an Olympic format is celebrating its Austrian premiere in the Salzkammergut. From September 15th to 20th, the first Formula Kite Mixed Relay European Championship will take place at the Rindbach leisure center in Ebensee. Around 50 teams will fight for the European championship title over five days.
In addition, the trend sport event Lakeventure will continue this autumn for kite freestylers. One kite freestyle competition will be held in the mouth of the Traun on the weekend of September 18-20. The best athletes around local hero Stefan Spiessberger have already expressed their interest in this event.
Defi Azimut: 48 Hours At Top Speed
To look impressive and steal the show, nothing can beat nailing a start! Heading the fleet this afternoon offshore of the Pointe du Talud for the 48 Heures Azimut, Damien Seguin (Groupe Apicil) was soon being hounded by the pack of new IMOCAs led by reigning champion Charal. Indeed, as was demonstrated in yesterday's speed runs, the boats with daggerboards and the new foilers clearly aren't punching at the same weight....
In any case, the entire fleet put on an absolute showstopper this afternoon with the IMOCAs virtually aligned in an established medium breeze and glorious sunshine once again off Lorient. Unfortunately, there were two no-shows with Newrest-Art et Fenêtres and Bureau Vallee II confined to port due to insurance problems...
Passing Pen Men at the northern tip of Ile de Groix, Jeremie Beyou's black foiler was still leading the way, with Arkea Paprec hot on her heels, whilst the skipper of L'Occitane en Provence had managed to shake off the chasing pack to quickly complete this first provisional podium.
Prior to the start, all the skippers were in agreement that the first stretch of the course to the Azimut 1 waypoint in this 48-hour sprint would be a drag race in which the latest generation foilers would be able to excel. "The leaders will get richer as the breeze will gradually flesh out and the first racers to gain westing will be able to reap the benefits. We'll gybe at the mark and then we'll switch onto the other tack with roughly the same angle", explained Kevin Escoffier (PRB), positioned in 7th place this evening.
Already powered up at 18 knots, the top foilers will see the wind lift and strengthen before gradually shifting round to the North. The gennakers and other FROs (the new large genoas that are all the rage in IMOCA) will be out in force to further pick up the pace in this rapid 143-mile flight to the first course mark.
The second half of the night and tomorrow morning will give the skippers a chance to ease off the pace a little, which will doubtless please the leaders who won't have had time to get much shut-eye. This short break will likely lead to some bunching up of the fleet too.
The second half of this 48-hour sprint is shaping up to be more random, as noted by Charlie Dalin, fourth on Apivia: "The final section will be quite long, close-hauled with some changes of tack. The finish is still uncertain as there's a chance we'll encounter a windless zone". As such, Race Management has given itself until 20:00 hours tonight to announce a possible course modification to the competitors, which would likely consist of moving the Azimut 2 mark to a different latitude.
In the meantime, Sebastien Simon took the top spot off Jeremie Beyou for a few minutes, the first five boats bunched within a two-mile radius with fierce racing at every stage of the ranking.

Jimmy Cornell's Next Adventure
Veteran offshore sailor and prolific author Jimmy Cornell turns 80 in 2020 and what better way for a man with over 200,000 sea miles under his keel to celebrate than to start another circumnavigation.
This year also happens to be the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan's first circumnavigation of the planet, a voyage of exploration that was completed under the leadership of Juan Sebastian Elcano who took command of the fleet when Magellan was killed in the Philippines.
To give the adventure a current theme, Cornell will make the circumnavigation using only renewable energy and without leaving a carbon footprint. The boat Cornell has chosen to sail, named Aventura Zero, is a modified Outremer 45 that he and the principles at Outremer are calling the 4 Zero, due to its zero omissions. The boat also carries the logo Elcano 500, in honor of the great explorer and to emphasize the project's theme: Electricity, Carbon, No.
To achieve a zero carbon system, Cornell has partnered with OceanVolt, which designed an all-electric propulsion and energy system that both drives the boat under power and uses its propellers to generate up to 1,000 watts of energy when under sail. This system is augmented by a large solar panel array and a water generator.
The route Cornell and his crew of three will follow is that sailed by Magellan and Elcano from Europe around Cape Horn then west to the Philippines and on around the Cape of Good Hope and back to Europe. The new Aventura Zero was launched in France on Monday (September 7) and will start sea trials next week. Cornell expects to depart from Sevilla, Spain later this year.

Yacht Racing Forum 2020 destined for Portsmouth Harbour, United Kingdom
The Yacht Racing Forum will take place for the first time in the United Kingdom, on 23 - 24 November 2020. The event will be based around Portsmouth Harbour, with the main conference taking place in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard's Action Stations and Boathouse 7.
As the leading annual conference for the business of sailing and yacht racing, this is the first time the Yacht Racing Forum will be hosted in the UK. In its 13th edition, the YRF attracts sports' personalities from all over the world: event organisers, sponsors, designers, professional sailors, boat builders, media, technical providers as well as insurance and finance companies.
Alongside an informative series of lectures, the YRF provides a unique opportunity to network, to debate the future of the sport, and to develop business opportunities.
Portsmouth Harbour's stunning locale is the home to HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Mary Rose and two new aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. The harbour is also known as the UK centre of engineering excellence, a UK yacht racing hub and is the base of INEOS Team UK, Alex Thomson Racing, North Sails, Selden Masts, Raymarine and more.
2020 J/70 UK National Championships
11-13 September 2020
Royal Southern Yacht Club, Hamble, UK
The 2020 J/70 UK National Championships, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club, has attracted 22 teams for the regatta. Racing will take place in The Solent 11-13 September with nine windward leeward races scheduled over three days of action. The reigning Open and Corinthian World Champions will be competing. America’s Cup, Olympic and World champions sailors will be in action, as well as passionate Corinthian crews. Racing is scheduled to start on Friday 11th September with three races scheduled per day. Weather forecast suggest breeze right through the wind speed range, testing the teams in different wind conditions.
2019 J/70 Open World Champion, Paul Ward’s Eat Sleep J Repeat (RSrnYC) will be defending the national title win last year. Corinthian World Champions, King & Wilson’s Soak Racing (RSrnYC), will be defending their national title. In form teams from recent regattas include: Charles Thompson’s Brutus (RSrnYC), Nick Phillips’ Chaotic from Parkstone YC, Tim Collins’ EV Experts (RSrnYC), Simon Patterson’s Standfast (RSrnYC) and Peters & Calascione’s Calypso (RYS). Doug Struth’s DSP, runner-up for the 2019 J/70 Corinthian World Championship, will also be in action. The Open event will also feature J P Alvarez racing an all-Argentinian team from YC Argentino, Buenos Aires, the team all work in London.
The 2020 J/70 UK National Championships is a non-discardable event for the J/70 UK Grand Slam Series, deciding the overall rankings for the 2020 season.

America's Cup winner 'has already been decided'
The America's Cup is as good as decided six months out from the match for the Auld Mug.
That was acknowledged by American Magic executive director and skipper Terry Hutchinson as his team bury themselves into commissioning their second boat Patriot which was flown to Auckland from the United States late last week.
Fellow challengers INEOS Team UK have also taken delivery of their second AC75 while Italy's Luna Rossa and defender Emirates New Zealand are putting the finishing touches to the production of their second generation boats that will be sailed in the Prada Cup and America's Cup.
"Probably the hardest part of where all the teams are in this part of the programme is that already the result has been decided," Hutchinson told Stuff.
"By that I mean the designers have designed. All the teams have their boat twos, the teams are working on their foils so there will be a little bit of reaction to what you see the other teams are doing." But essentially the big decisions have been made.

A Sprit Of A Difference
Cruising spinnakers designed to fly off a sprit are larger than ones tacked to the bow. With spinnakers, bigger means faster. This video shows two people sailing an Acorna 345 fast downwind with a cruising spinnaker flown off the factory installed sprit. The sail is well behaved despite the power it delivers.
Many boatbuilders now realize the benefits of an asymmetrical spinnaker flown off a sprit; as a result, most of today's new boats come with sprit as standard equipment.
The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.
In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.
All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
