One of Australia's longest-serving sports writers, the yachting correspondent and commentator Peter Campbell, died in Hobart yesterday, aged 89.
Peter wrote for Hobart's The Mercury newspaper for the past 10 years and was a regular contributor to the many media outlets, filing his final story only last week.
Peter's knowledge of local, national and international sailing was vast. He was Media Director for the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 1991-2005, Editor-at-Large for Offshore Yachting and then Editor 1971-2006 and Editor, Modern Boating, 1975-1982. Peter had been a member of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania since 1984; of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, 1991-2009, and Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, since 1977.
Born at Beauty Point in Northern Tasmania, Peter began work as a journalist with The Mercury from 1946-48 before relocating to Sydney as a senior reporter for the rural newspaper, The Land, and then became news editor and feature editor for 13 years. His first involvement in the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race dates back to 1946 when he began covering the race as a cadet reporter at the Mercury.
Peter then established his own writing consultancy specialising in yachting. He reported on all major national sailing championships as well as international events, including several America's Cups and Admirals Cups, and the Atlanta, Barcelona, Seoul, Los Angeles and Sydney Olympics.
In Tasmania, his writing gave a special profile to racing on the Derwent involving the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, Derwent Sailing Squadron and Bellerive Yacht Club, and the long-distance coastal races including the Westcoaster, and Launceston to Hobart races, as well as the Three Peaks race. In 2014 Peter received an Order of Australia Medal for services to yachting as a journalist.
While he lived in Sydney, Peter took great pride in racing Hornblower, the Bonbridge 27 he owned in partnership with the late John Ivimey, the pair winning the RSYS's pointscore a couple of times during the eighties. He enjoyed a fulfilled life, leaving no stone unturned.
Peter and his wife Sarah returned to Tasmania to supposedly retire, in Sandy Bay in 2006. However, he brought with him a great love of sailing and the sea, begun as a boy on the Tamar River, a passion that continued throughout his life and meant he kept working.
A past Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, Biddy Badenach said he was saddened by the news that Peter has died.
"During my 27 years involvement with the Hobart Sydney Yacht Race I have met many people and have become friends one such person was Peter Campbell. He was a true gentleman, an outstanding reporter and was highly respected by his peers and sailors. After moving to Hobart, his contribution to news on yachting in Tasmania was first class. He will be sadly missed by all who were associated with him."
Peter is survived by his wife Sarah, sons Timothy and Jonothan, and their partners Margot and Hannah. Our sympathies are with him at this time. -- Craig Macaulay

** Editor: Peter was the author of thousands of articles cited in this newletter over the past 20 years. Your humble narrator last saw him in person at the 1999 Sailing World Championships in Melbourne. His many kindnesses to me and my (then young) family that month are fondly remembered. Peter was a gentle genius; his was a life well lived.
Macaire Looks To His First Stage Win Thursday Morning
Holding a lead of 2.3 nautical miles with 120 miles to make to the finish line of Stage 1 of the 51st La Solitaire du Figaro on the Baie de Saint-Brieuc, a seemingly confident, composed Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) may be on the threshold of his first ever leg win of his decade of Figaro racing.
If Macaire's margin was under threat yesterday night when he led around the Fastnet Rock he has modulated his return leg, fast spinnaker reaching, well. The 39 year old who races out of Saint Gilles Crox de Vie with the Team Vendee Formation, has sailed a textbook race, not least showing ample speed during what has largely proven a drag race back across the Celtic Sea.
Passing the Scillies today he was slowed and saw his margin cut to just over one mile, but the French Solo Offshore Champion of 2015 had doubled that in recent hours.
Known as Le Marcassin (the boar) for his ability to push hard under the big spinnaker in big winds, Macaire, has Alexis Loison (Region Normandie), 36, - who won Stage 1 into Plymouth in 2014 in second and Armel Le Cleac'h (Banque Populaire), 43, in third. Age and experience seems to have prevailed thus far, Loison has 14 participations and Le Cleac'h 11. Lois Berrehar (Bretagne CMB Performance), 26 and Tom Laperche (Bretagne CMB Espoir), 23 are the best of the young guns in seventh and eighth who may yet come good tonight.
The best of the internationals is Briton Sam Goodchild (Leyton) in eighth poised four miles behind the leader, Swiss rookie Nils Palmieri (TeamWork) is tenth while Ireland's Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa) is half a mile back in 11th.

Giles Scott dominates opening day of Finn Europeans
Defending European champion, and current Olympic gold medalist, Giles Scott, from Britain, dominated the opening day of the 2020 U23, Open and Masters Finn European Championship in Gdynia Poland to lead after the first day from Henry Wetherell, from Britain, and Alejandro Muscat, from Spain. The races were won by Scott and Facundo Olezza, from Argentina. There are 70 Finns from 27 nations taking part.
The championship got off to a wet and windy start with 12-20 knots of northerly breeze, and rain. Lots and lots of rain.
Racing continues Thursday with a 10 race series scheduled. The championship concludes on Sunday 6 September.

WASZP Games Cancelled
It is with great disappointment that we are forced to cancel our second international event for the year. What was planned as a fantastic bucket list sailing holiday has now had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As always the WASZP Class will remain agile and focus on the positive and not the negative.
As most of you may have read, the Youth Americas Cup cancellation was the final nail to cancel the event for a number of reasons. The NZ quarantine rulings by the government make it impossible for every country to have equal access to the event and there is also a number of WASZP competitors who would be sailing in the Youth Americas Cup that would enable more international participation for an International WASZP Games. We completely back the government decision to make the health of the NZ citizens the priority and as always we will remain agile in our WASZP Class decision making.
The 2021 NZ WASZP Games is now going to be allocated 4 days from the 15-18th of April 2021 as a NZ Nationals and if a travel bubble is applied with some countries we can quickly flick the switch to create a Pacific Championships.
The 2022 International WASZP Games will be held in Malcesine Lake Garda, Italy from the 9-16th of July.
Young Azzurra Programme To Continue
The Young Azzurra sporting programme will continue in the Persico 69F Circuit with the aim of training and offering concrete opportunities to talented young Italian sailors.
Should they successfully defend the America's Cup, the RNZYS intends to resume the Youth America's Cup as soon as conditions allow it. The maximum age limit, set at 25, will be extended, with the aim of allowing the same crews that have already been training for some time to take part in the event.
"We are very sorry to hear this news," commented Michael Illbruck, Commodore of the YCCS, "however when we launched Young Azzurra, aside from being aware of this possible scenario, we started this new sporting programme with the certainty that foiling will be an important part of the future of sailing in general, but also of our future. We are committed to this new sailing technology, to the Persico 69F circuit and to the Young Azzurra team. Our primary goal remains that of offering concrete opportunities to the most talented young sailors and we would like to develop youth performance sailing. We will continue with this sporting programme, and we are also pleased to be hosting our first foiling event, here in Porto Cervo, in November."
YJA MS Amlin 'International Sailor of the Decade' announced
The Yachting Journalists' Association (YJA) and MS Amlin Boat Insurance are delighted to announce a brand new award, the YJA MS Amlin 'International Sailor of the Decade' award.
The YJA MS Amlin 'International Sailor of the Decade' aims to recognise the achievements of the sailors who have had the greatest positive impact on our great sport and pastime.
Nominations for the YJA MS Amlin 'International Sailor of the Decade' will be open to all from September 10th until October 23rd 2020 via the YJA website: www.yja.world with the presentation of the award being held during the Yacht Racing Forum on November 23rd.
The awards will be livestreamed worldwide via social media and on the major sailing news platforms. The trophy will be unique and striking, details of which will be announced closer to the presentation itself.

American Magic's 23m yacht lands in Auckland
A 23m yacht belonging to America's Cup challenger American Magic has landed in Auckland onboard one of the world's largest cargo airplanes.
The Ukrainian AN-124 Antonov Airlines aircraft transporting the boat touched down at Auckland Airport at 7.44am on Thursday.
It left Providence, in the US state of Rhode Island, earlier this week, travelling via Chicago and Honolulu.

International 12 Dinghies To Celebrate New Arrival at Revived Royal St.George Yacht Club Championships

As the International 12-foot class prepares to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its revived championships next week in Dun Laoghaire Harbour, the historic dinghy class is also welcoming a new arrival.
A new clinker-built 12 has recently been completed by Rui Ferreira of Ballydehob in West Cork.
This class was designed in 1913 by George Cockshott as the British Racing Association 'A' Class. The class was adopted by the International Yacht Racing Union on 1st. January 1920 and thus it became the International 12 Foot Class. The class was the only dinghy class to compete at the 1920 Antwerp (Belgium) Olympic Games, at Oostende.
A small piece of yachting history: At the 1920 Olympic Games at Oostende, the organisers didn't know the difference between a 12 Foot Dinghy and a 12 Meter Yacht, so they put both classes on the same course. After one race, the dinghy competitors went on strike and refused to race on the 25mile long racecourse. This caused such chaos among the organizing committee, that it was several months later before the second Olympic race for dinghies which was held in a different country, in The Netherlands.
