A Winner In Waiting
On his final afternoon and evening aboard the 31 metre giant trimaran which has served him and the Groupama 3 team so well, Cammas looks to be on course to win one of the only major French Multihull ocean racing honours to have so far eluded him.
With a margin of over 265 miles on his next nearest rival Thomas Coville (Sodebo), Cammas was on the breeze making 12 knots, poised waiting for the breeze to make its expected veer to the SW which would allow him to tack and lay the west side of Guadeloupe and the finish line off Point-a-Pitre.
Or if the shift does not come the final hours may require more tacks, slaloming in the southterly headwinds between the islands.
Third on his Route du Rhum debut as a 25 year old in 1998, three times ORMA champion Cammas was fifth in the last race but seems assured of victory before he bids farewell to the multihull world which he has all but conquered, heading for new monohull challenges.
The current predictions anticipate Groupama 3 at the end of Monday night or early Tuesday morning (French time).
Behind him Cammas' long time record adversary Coville, doubtless sapped by the battle he has had to keep his own giant record holding tri Sodebo moving through long spells of very light airs, is under pressure from the Francis Joyon (Idec), who is arriving on a more southerly routing, who had closed to within 70 miles of Sodebo.
In the Mult 50 class successive damage to the two leading boats Franck-Yves Escoffier's Crepes-Whaou!, who lost the bow of his main hull yesterday evening, and then hours later Yves Le Blevec (Actual) damaged his forward starboard cross beam. Both are determined to carry on in the race but have been making very slow speeds today, midway between the Azores and the West Indies.
In the IMOCA Open 60 class Roland Jourdain's lead stands at a steady 40 miles over Armel Le Cleac'h on BritAir, and looks set to grow as Le Cleac'h is the first to run into light winds to the south of 2006 IMOCA class winner Jourdain on Veolia Environnement. Brit Air is slowed to just over two knots.
The lead of Thomas Ruyant has never been bigger in the Class 40 fleet on his Destination Dunkerque, but the south and the tradewinds are still paying the dividend that Nicolas Troussel (CMB) went in search of. Troussel has gained 44 miles and 12 places over the last couple of days and continues to profit. Britain's Pete Goss is also winning places down in the south and is up from 22nd to 13th on DMS.
* At 0100hrs (CET) this morning (Monday) Yves le Blevec, skipper of the Multi 50 Actual informed his team and the Route du Rhum-La Banque Postale race director that the trimaran has sustained damage to the forward starboard cross beam. Le Blevec has lowered the mainsail of Actual and is sailing under ORC headsail in 20 knots of SE'ly wind.
Actual is located equi-distance between the West Indies and the Azores. On the advice of weather router Christian Dumard, le Blevec is making a W'ly course of around eight knots to clear the worst of the conditions.
The situation is reported to have been stabilised. The solo skipper has organized a survival cell at the back of the boat, comprising essential safety equipment including a life-raft, lifejacket, GPS, torch, knife and iridium phone.
The immediate objective of the skipper is to get Actual out of the most unsettled area then looking at a solution with his team and the boat's designer.
Swedish Challenge for the 34th America's Cup
Speaking at today's press conference Torbjorn Tornqvist, Chairman of Artemis Racing, shared his vision for the team and endorsed the new format for the America's Cup. Torbjorn Tornqvist also spoke of the important role of the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) in the team's challenge.
The Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS), one of the world's oldest yacht clubs, has a longstanding history with the America's Cup, having had three Challenges since the America's Cup began in 1851.
Over the course of the next three years, Artemis Racing will be focused on designing and building two AC72 yachts, while also developing a strong sailing team to compete in the AC45 World Series and the Challenger Selection Series. The clear goal is to challenge Cup holders BMW ORACLE Racing for the America's Cup in 2013.
Paul Cayard announced that world champion sailor Terry Hutchinson (USA) will be the team's helmsman and that the design team will be led by Juan Kouyoumdjian, well known for his success with winning designs in the Volvo Ocean Race such as ABN Amro and Ericsson.
The next event for Artemis Racing is the Louis Vuitton Trophy - Dubai, which begins on 14 November. Looking ahead to 2011, Artemis Racing will continue to compete on the RC44 World Championship tour, while joining the Extreme 40 Circuit and the America's Cup World Series, which will be raced in AC45s.
Gutek Steals Lead In Velux 5 Oceans - But Not For Long
It was a tense weekend of nail-biting action in the Velux 5 Oceans as the leading boats battled it out for first place. After hunting down race leader Brad Van Liew and closing the gap between them to just 22 nautical miles going into the weekend, Polish skipper Zbigniew Gutkowski led the fleet for the first time since leaving La Rochelle three weeks ago.
With Brad to the south, Gutek was able to take a more direct route towards Cape Town, effectively cutting the corner off the route sailed by Le Pingouin. But the 36-year-old's time at the front of the fleet was to be a brief one. After several days of frustrating light winds navigating through the St Helena High in the South Atlantic, Brad picked up the winds he had been searching for and reclaimed the top spot. In the past 24 hours the American has stretched his lead to 152 nautical miles, averaging 14.5 knots.
It was not easy for Brad to hang on to his lead - and it's not over yet. There are still more than 1,700 nautical miles to go before the leading pair reach Cape Town and the finish line for the first ocean sprint. Early predictions forecast the pair could arrive in Cape Town this coming weekend.

IRC Congress and IRC 2011
Delegates from 18 countries reported on IRC activity in 2010 and plans for 2011.
The IRC Technical Committee reported that the number of IRC rated boats in 2010 had held up to the same level as 2009, an excellent result in the continuing difficult economic times.
Delegates considered 30 submissions for changes to IRC rules and processes. The most significant of these are:
- Rule 8.2.1 now requires that a boat holding a shorthanded certificate may not use her normal certificate for shorthanded races.
- New Rule 8.10 defines rated dimensions as maxima and minima and that a boat found during equipment inspection at an event to exceed any dimension is not in compliance with her certificate.
- Rule 21.8.1(c) is amended to limit the minimum size of headsail used by a boat rated for a single roller furling headsail.
- Rule 22.4 is amended by the deletion of old Rules 22.4.1, 22.4.3, 22.4.4 and 22.4.5. New Rule 22.4.2 now invokes Crew Number or alternatively maximum crew weight by default unless this is amended by a Notice of Race. Any event already including crew limitations in its Notice of Race will not need to do anything. However, any event which does not wish to enforce crew limitations will need to specifically say so in the Notice of Race. If a Notice of Race says nothing about crew, then IRC Crew Number or maximum weight will automatically apply. For further advice please go to the IRC website, www.ircrating.org.

Vietnam to Survey Location for WMRT
Representatives of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the Vietnam National Administration of Exercise and Sports and WMRT on Tuesday begin a fact-finding trip in Halong, which is known for the World Heritage-listed bay of the same name.
Nguyen Van Tuan, head of the tourism administration, told the Daily that an administration mission visited the Asian Match Racing Championships final held by WMRT in Malaysia last week to draw on experience in organizing such an event.
The tour of Halong is a preparatory activity so that organizers can find a good location for the competition, which is expected to take place late next year.
Two months ago, Yap Kai Keng, chief representative for Indochina of WMRT, said that apart from Nha Trang, other places in the nation like Quang Ninh, Danang, Phu Quoc and Phan Thiet were also good for organizing boat races.
He said WMRT and Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in hosting the forthcoming race. The event, together with related activities, would be broadcast for no less than 20,000 minutes on TV, including Star Sports channel, to 180 countries and territories.
If the race takes place here, Vietnam will become the newest stop on WMRT's list next year, Tuan said. However, a lot of homework should be done in the preparatory process following the signing of the MOU.
Tuan said Nha Trang would be a good venue for sailing as it meets the strict requirements of WMRT in terms of infrastructure, sea and wind conditions. However, the city does not have an international standard tourist wharf while Halong does have it. -- Dao Loan - The Saigon Times Daily
Illusion Class Guy Fawkes Trophy
The racing for the Guy Fawkes Trophy was one of the best attended in the class history with 33 entries over the weekend. 2 weeks ago it was clear that from the season's opening race competition was going to be the though with now 40 boats on the quay of this increasingly popular class.
The class has always shown good comradeship and 29 boats where quickly launched on Saturday to sail in a North Westerly wind force 1-2 just of Silver Beach.
After the annual Illusion Class Dinner on Saturday night Sunday was a lot cooler and the usual bulk of multiple layers of thermal clothing, gloves and skiing goggles came out for another 3 races. The race officer decided wisely to race inside the harbour after a few brave souls braved conditions outside the harbour which would not have been to everybody's liking. It took 3 starts to get everybody off the line for the first race and for the first time the black flag came into play. Pin end seemed to be favoured despite a few moored boats and Graham Bailey lead the race from start to finish.
The next two races where dominated by Graham Sunderland, Mark Downer and Graham Bailey whilst the rest of the 26 strong fleet also had their battles with each other and keeping watch of the various moored vessels and a floating dock which Phillip Bown hit head on in first race although he still managed a credible 14th place in that race.
Julia Bailey, who has just returned from the Etchells Worlds in Ireland, showed that also in this class she can show the boys the ropes and had a good score line of 9,8,5 finishing first lady and 9th overall. Andrew Christie, who was sailing last year towards the back of the fleet, sheeted his sails in and finishing a very credible overall 10th place.
The Guy Fawkes Trophy went to Graham Sunderland, 2nd Mark Downer and 3rd Graham Bailey.

A TV crew for 'Middle East Business Report' visited marinas, boatbuilders, boatyards and refit centres in Göcek and Bodrum - two boatbuilding areas located on Turkey's south coast where the traditional gulet type of boat was born.
The report will focus on the development of the Turkish boatbuilding industry from traditional wooden building over the last few centuries to the high tech superyachts under construction today.
Industry leaders are also interviewed to discuss how they are surviving in the current global economic climate.

Alongside growth of 16% for its boating businesses in the 2009/2010 year, the Beneteau Group also says its income from boats has taken off to produce figures of more than 700% up over the previous 2008/2009 year.
Beneteau's boat sales amounted to €573.5m for the year ending August 31, 2010 compared to €494.3m the previous year. Income from ordinary operations grew to €32.5m from a loss of €5.3m the year before. The operating margin in 2009/2010 was 5.7% compared to the 3.4% forecast.

According to Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH, organiser of hanseboot 2010, nearly 100,000 people visited the 51st International Boat Show Hamburg.
This total was better than both the 2009 attendance of 95,000 quoted by Hamburg Messe and the 87,973 quoted on the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) website.
'Everything points to a strong recovery in the watersports sector - with more exhibitors, a clear rise in rented space, and finally also more visitors. We are more than satisfied with the results at hanseboot 2010,' said Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO.
The company added the visitors total was good at the weekends and the late night on Wednesday when the show was open until 20:00 hours.

Australia's most successful cruising catamaran builder, Seawind, has announced the purchase of Corsair Marine, the world's foremost trailerable trimaran manufacturer.
Announcing the purchase during Seawind's 12th annual Pittwater Regatta in Sydney on the weekend, Seawind Managing Director Richard Ward said: 'This is a marriage made in heaven. The two companies have products and manufacturing processes that strongly complement each other. For both Seawind and Corsair, it will signal new growth opportunities in both the manufacturing and sales areas.'
Seawind plans to continue and strengthen the Corsair brand world-wide.
Mr Ward said that both Seawind and Corsair customers would benefit from the combined company.
