Line Honours for Mikey Ferguson on Pip Hare's 'Medallia' in Lonely Rock Race
Belfast Lough's Mikey Ferguson found the Lonely Rock Race on Pip Hare's Open 60, Medallia, shorter than planned due to the impending storm.
The race director decided to shorten the course with the turn at Wolf Rock off Land's End instead of the Fastnet. And the finish at Plymouth.
However, the crew, Pip, Mikey and Paul Larsen were delighted to take line honours in an entry list of 14 with an elapsed time of 41:45:36 ahead of Tom Kneen's JPK 1180, Sunrise. -- Betty Armstrong

Persico 69F Revolution
Gargnano, Lake Garda, Italy: Never give up, even if you're defeated and end up in the lower part of the table, even if at the beginning of the crucial race of selection you capsize, even if in the final your principal opponent starts like a rocket.
Never give up especially if you're Ruggero Tita, Francesco Rubagotti or Matteo Pilati and you name your team – with the right irony – "Top Gun Racing", because at the end you win with honor the Persico 69F Revolution FCL.
Three crucial races in one day, this morning, with an amazing wind from North: Top Gun Racing needed two flight (one of them started with a capsize), both finished with the second place behind Young Azzurra, to get to the final. Waiting for them, fresh and rested, Zeta Racing and Dutch Sail Janssen de Jong, qualified yesterday thanks to a direct path in the upper part of the table.
With the results of today, the leaderboard overall is completed, which takes into account the placings combined of the participation to both the Revolution; the victory goes to Dutch Sail Janssen de Jong, followed by RHKYC Team Agiplast and FP Sailing.
Revolution finished and arrives the comment of the organizers, assigned to Dede De Luca: "What the Revolution taught us is that these boats and this formula reward the tenacity. We saw continuous changes in the board, surpasses, capsizes, protest: the victory was assigned to who has always believed in it until the end, who never gave up, who took the opportunity to catch up. And I really like this, because our formula has to put on a show, entertain the competitors keeping everyone in the game until the end. Thanks to the wind from north we learned that these boats are solid and safe: in training, we went out with 25 knots and waves, and everything has worked. The teams are used to go faster than 20 knots, the boat is solid and reliable and the feedback we get from water is more than positive".
In the following days, the Persico 69F will be used for a series of training by the teams that compete in the Youth America's Cup and then they will be at the start line in Gorla Trophy and in "100 Foils", the version for flying boats of the classic Centomiglia. Then they will be back with Persico 69F Cup, in Malcesine, for the second of four Grand Prix in program for the middle of September.

The Persico 69F Revolution event was also the first chance for observations to be carried out to define the roster for the Youth America's Cup team: on this occasion for young Finn sailor Federico Colaninno, in the role of flight controller, and Francesca Bergamo, a 49er FX helmswoman, in the role of trimmer. Observation and training on the Persico 69F will continue from next week in Malcesine, also on Lake Garda. Due to its similarity to the AC9F, which will be used for the Youth America's Cup, the 69F hull provides the best alternative training platform, since only one AC9F currently exists, which is currently sailing in New Zealand.
Confirmed as skipper of Young Azzurra, Ettore Botticini is an emerging young match racer, already third in the world ranking list and world junior champion in 2018, whose development was supported by the Circolo Nautico and Vela Argentario. In compliance with the rules of the Youth America's Cup, Ettore Botticini has become a sporting member of the YCCS.

Muhonen untouchable as breeze arrives for third day of Finn Silver Cup
Double U23 Finn World Champion, Oskari Muhonen, from Finland, stamped his authority over the fleet at the 2020 Finn Silver Cup at Carnet en Roussillon, France on Wednesday, with three race wins from three races in near perfect conditions. France's Guillaume Boisard had a great day to move up to second overall, but is now 10 points adrift of the Finn, while Germany's Nicolas Thierse dropped to third.
Conditions were fantastic on day 3. It was a hot and sunny day with the wind increasing from 10 to 15 knots by the end of the day with really big waves all the time. All races were led and won by Muhonen. He led throughout each race apart from in the second race when Domonkos Nemeth, from Hungary, got an advantage on the left side of the course.
Muhonen is one of a number of sailors here still looking for the final place on the starting line in Tokyo 2020. He is now within grasp of a record breaking third Silver Cup title. After eight races, with just four, to go Muhonen holds a 10 point lead over Boisard and Thierse. Racing concludes on Friday

Race against time in the Foil for Life Challenge by Lemer Pax
After a month of planning all was set for the six WASZP sailors on Friday 14th August to undertake the Foil for Life Challenge by Lemer Pax. Pierre Leboucher, Mael Garnier & Corentin Horeau from France alongside Hattie Rogers, Edward Higson & William Heathcote from the UK were set for the 108 nautical mile foiling marathon from Lymington to Le Havre, raising money for the National Health Service (NHS) and Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP).
On the eve of the challenge, a potentially devastating announcement was made by the UK Government that all citizens entering the UK from France after 4am on Saturday 15th August would need to quarantine for 14 days - the challenge had become a race against time as well as one of endurance. At 5.30am on Friday, following a rapid change of logistics, the united and determined team made the final decision to go ahead and launched from the Royal Lymington Yacht Club slipway.
John Burnie, founder of the RORC Caribbean 600, saw the fleet off from the Lymington Starting Platform at 7.45am, sending messages in both English and French to the sailors.
Passing the Needles on the foil was one of the moments which will live long with the sailors. These are an iconic landmark in so many sailing challenges and James Tomlinson took some superb photos of the moment which capture the moment beautifully.
With the wind decreasing, the decision was made around half-way across the Channel to re-route to Port du Becquet, just to the East of Cherbourg. Alternative points of landfall had always been factored in so that the challenge could still be completed over a shorter distance if necessary.
On the face of it, the voyage could have been a dull ten-hour reach on one tack, but one of the beauties of sailing is that it's very rarely like that. A school of dolphins joined the WASZPs around 20 miles out from Cherbourg and an exhausted tiny bird landed on support boat driver Simon Rogers' head. The bird then fluttered between the RIBs and WASZPs, resting for long periods of time, then flying ashore once at dock.
At 10.30pm CET the exhausted sailors made landfall in France. The Foil for Life Challenge by Lemer Pax was completed against all the odds.

EUROSAF President's Letter
We are still in unchartered waters concerning the possibility for all sailors across Europe to resume sailing. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have tried to keep as many EUROSAF events as possible to help come out of the current blocked situation, to give sailors opportunities to compete at a good level, and to offer ROs possibilities to put their experience to good use. The situation is not fully and homogeneously back to normal across Europe, but we think that fostering such opportunities is a way to go back to—maybe a new—normality.
2020 Extraordinary General Assembly
At the electronic general assembly last April, EUROSAF Members voted for holding a physical meeting in Zagreb later in the year, with a tentative date by end September. During the discussion at the conference call held on 28 March, it was made clear that travel and meeting conditions would need to be favourable to organise such a meeting. The Croatian Sailing Federation has generously confirmed its invitation. Being now closer to the mentioned date, we come back to you to understand what is your current situation concerning travel limitations to and from Croatia and to gather your feedback concerning topics to put on the agenda.
Please confirm to the secretary general before 17 August your availability to attend a physical meeting in Zagreb on 26 September and enclose your views so that we can confirm the meeting and start the preparations.

The EUROSAF Pirat Youth European Championship planned on Ratzeburger See, Germany, from 26 to 31 July.
The EUROSAF Match Racing, Open European Championship planned in Ekaterinburg, Russia, from 11 to 15 August; the 2021 edition will take place in the same place from 17 to 21 August 2021.
The EUROSAF Match Racing, Women European Championship planned in Locarno, Switzerland, from 15 to 18 October.
The following two events are taking place:
The EUROSAF L30 European Championship (fully crewed) is scheduled as planned in Marseille, France, from 20 to 23 August.
The EUROSAF Mixed Offshore European Championship will be sailed from 30 August to 5 September on L30 boats. The registration is open until 10 August. Qualification series will be sailed during the week, if need be, before the final, when crews will set sail for two nights at sea from downtown Genoa. A Virtual Regatta online event will be held at the same time. An offshore safety course will be organised before the event in Genoa.

NAB Tower Race Launched Together With A New Christchurch Bay Race
The Island Sailing Club announced today their intention to run the ISC Nab Tower Race on Saturday 5 September 2020 and Christchurch Bay Race on Saturday 26 September 2020.
The NAB Tower race sees competitors race from Cowes, eastwards down the Solent to the Nab Tower, off the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight. Upon rounding the tower, the course then heads westwards, with a Cowes finish.
The Christchurch Bay race is run to the west through the Needles Channel into Christchurch Bay where the boats round a mark before returning to the Island Sailing Club line in Cowes.
Open to all boats with an IRC rating or ISCRS (the Island Sailing Club Rating System). It's a simple process to get boats rated under ISCRS, just complete the form on the club's website or pick up a form from the ISC lobby. There is no charge for an ISCRS rating plus a reduced fee if you enter both races.
Please Note: Competitors are reminded of the requirement to comply with the government guidance on social distancing and other Covid19 measures. Permitted crew can be up to a maximum of 6 people from any household or two-thirds of a boat's IRC crew number, whichever is the least.

Ida Lewis Distance Race: A Triumph in Trying Times
Newport, R.I.: A total of 65 boats started the 2020 Ida Lewis Distance Race presented by Jeanneau America on Saturday, August 15 in a building northeasterly that dished out 20-22 knots of breeze (and a few knock-down gusts) throughout most of the day and into the evening and overnight. By the time racing had finished for two offshore classes (IRC and PHRF Doublehanded) and three inshore classes (PHRF Aloha, PHRF Coronet and PHRF Cruising Spinnaker), 16 boats had retired; however, plenty of teams were left to beam about their accomplishments, each one crossing the finish line in Newport Harbor, near where they started, and receiving - no matter what the hour - a congratulatory bottle of Zardetto Prosecco delivered to them on the water by Ida Lewis Yacht Club volunteers.
Winning the 13-boat PHRF Aloha Class and the Arthur Curtiss James Trophy for best corrected time was the 45' wooden yawl Zingara, owned by Mike McAllister (Providence, R.I.) and skippered by Bill Hainie (Newport, R.I.), who is her listing agent.
Winning the six-boat offshore IRC Class and the Russell J. Hoyt and Commodore's Trophies for best elapsed and corrected time (respectively) in IRC was the Pac 52 Warrior Won, skippered by Chris Sheehan (Larchmont, N.Y.).
The 17-boat Doublehanded Class, which sailed the 153 nm "Block Island Course", was won by the Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 Alchemist, sailed by Ken Read and Suzy Leech (Newport). This team also took first among three Mixed (Co-ed) Doublehanded crews. This category was included in a nod to a new such class at the 2024 Olympics.
On the final approach to Buzzards Bay Tower, Read and Leech trailed by two miles behind the Figaro 3 Fearless, another Mixed Doublehanded entry sailed by Jesse Fielding (Newport, R.I.) and Francesca Clapcich (Park City, Utah) of State Street Marathon Sailing Team. The Alchemist crew got its break on the second long run to Block Island when they decided to break towards the coast while Fearless continued offshore. The move put them in more wind pressure and allowed Alchemist to pass Fearless. "We were surprised as anybody," said Read, "because if Fearless was going to have conditions that were theirs, this was it. Downwind their foils just must have lit up!"

International umpire seminar postponed 12 months
Unfortunately, the international umpire seminar due to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in October 2020 will not be going ahead as planned.
This decision was made in conjunction with World Sailing, with the reality that New Zealand will almost certainly still be closed to international travellers (including seminar facilitators) in October.
We hope to run this seminar around the same time and event (New Zealand match racing national championships) in 2021.
Yachting New Zealand are instead planning to run an umpire course for NZ umpires this year. Details are still being confirmed and will be released when finalised.
