On semi-vacation for the next 10 days, issues will be intermittent. Your humble narrator has rented two adjacent cottages on his beloved upstate NY Lake Cayuga, where I'll be able to wave hello to slightly-distant family as we all hunker down in quarantine. Our best friends there own a micro-distillery and will deliver. I'll force myself to gag down premium handmade gin, vodkas, bourbon and single grain whisky. Just to be polite.

Strong winds are lashing the Auckland area, and there was no sailing Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Monday to Friday of the coming week should be moderate to fresh winds - all from an easterly direction.
American Magic sailed their AC75, Defiant, on three days of the four available, last week. Emirates Team New Zealand, with a choice of an AC75 or a test boat opted to sail only their 12 metre long test boat Te Kahu. We have not yet had the opportunity to see boat AC75's side by side. However we can now go back through previous images in similar locations of the two AC75's and get some idea of their relative strengths and issues.
Te Aihe has a skiff concept complete with a centreline bustle. Defiant is at the other extreme with a scow type hull notable for its shallow underbody, with no bustle. In fact Defiant is now the only AC75 without a bustle - now that the British have retrofitted a similar device within the limitations of the 12.5% hull surface area modification permitted by the AC75 class rule. Luna Rossa launched with a bustle, as did ETNZ's Te Aihe.
Both teams, in Auckland, have perfected the technique of being able to sail to windward with the hulls very close to the water without making contact with the surface. (We presume this is also the case with other teams.) The bow-on view of Defiant is notable for both the low flight height, and what happens when the underside of the hull does appear to make contact with the water. Generally contact appears to be very minimal, causes no spray to be flicked up, unless it is a serious closure with the surface, in which case the displaced water appears to shoot sideways, and gets picked up in the foil spray. -- Richard Gladwell

Usually there will be a morning report (NZT) based on when the boats have passed North Head - when there is usually the best photo opportunity.
ISORA Abandons Cross Channel & Wolf's Head Trophy Racing for 2020
In a major change to ISORA's rebooted season, the offshore body is cancelling plans for any further attempt at cross channel racing this season.
It is the latest blow for Irish Sea offshore sailing fans and follows the loss of this month's Round Ireland Yacht Race.
In view of the COVID situation in UK and Ireland and the present regulations in force, a meeting of ISORA's Sailing Committee unanimously decided that there will be no cross channel races and instead there will be races on each side of the Irish Sea. In view of this, the Wolf's Head Series is being abandoned for 2020, ISORA Chairman Peter Ryan told Afloat.
Competitors will compete for the respective championship titles on either side of the Channel, the Coastal Series, Class Results and the Silver Class.
Unobtanium no more- Ti64

Advances in composite materials and high-modulus rigging fibres in the last few decades have gone far to reduce, if not eliminate, the use of metals on many performance yachts. Aluminum alloys are light, but are soft and can be corroded, and stainless steel is often deemed too heavy for its application strength. There is one type of metal, however, that may reverse this trend because nothing else can provide such high strength, light weight and extreme durability in a small footprint that also needs to deliver reliability and performance. The team at Ti64, based in Austin, Texas, specialises in working with this unique metal: titanium.

Kieler Woche 2020: Medal shine in the women's classes
Gold, Silver, Bronze - the complete set of medals of the Olympic Games in front of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) shines at the Kieler Woche 2020 (September 5-13) in the Olympic one-handed class Laser Radial. The 2016 Olympic champion, four-time and reigning World Champion Marit Bouwmeester from the Netherlands will meet Annalise Murphy (Ireland/Silver) and Anna Marie Rindom (Denmark/Bronze) on the Kiel Fjord. 93 Laser-Radial-Sailors from all over the world (30 nations) have registered for Kieler Woche and only 60 starters will be allowed to sail based on the maximum number of registrations. The only exception is the wildcard for the top ten of the Olympic Games and the recent World Championship.
And Kiel is not only the rendezvous of the medal winners of Rio. They will be joined by two other female sailors from the top ten of the Olympic Games and the entire top 13 of the recent World Championship in Australia. More sailing quality has never been seen before in the women's Olympic sailing discipline in Kiel since 2008.
The Kieler Woche titleholder and Olympic as well as World Championship 6th, Josefin Olsson from Sweden, is one of five former Kieler Woche winners, who will use the first chance after the worldwide Corona-Lockdown for a top-class regatta.
In addition to sailing at the highest level, the Kieler Woche has traditionally been characterized by a colorful event area in Schilksee. But this year is different. The focus of the event is exclusively on sailing. Schilksee is becoming a closed society without an event area. -- Hermann Hell
British Keelboat Academy throws open doors for 2020/21
Young sailors aged between 18-24 can now apply to be part of the next cohort of British Keelboat Academy sailors.
The British Keelboat Academy (BKA) supports sailors aged between 18 and 24 in developing the skills they need to take their keelboat racing to a professional level.
The RYA has been running a programme for young dinghy racers wanting to make the transition to yacht and keelboat racing for nearly twenty years.
It has been such a success that graduates have gone on to hold top positions in some of the world's biggest and best sailing events such as the America's Cup, The Ocean Race, the TP52 Super Series, Class 40 and Figaro.
Successful applicants will receive coaching from a multitude of different experts across the sport gaining invaluable skills, experience and knowledge that will progress them in the world of keelboat racing.
The training takes place in Gosport, London, Portland and Cowes in boats ranging from Elliott 6Ms used at London 2012 though J/70s and 80s up to 40ft yachts.
With places in the BKA oversubscribed last year by 2:1 we have had to introduce a selection weekend to ensure we have the most appropriate sailors on the programme.

NZL60 boat returns to Team NZ headquarters

A special piece of New Zealand sporting history is now on public display leading up to next summer's America's Cup defence.
NZL60 - the boat Team NZ used to defend the Auld Mug back in 2000 - has been restored to its former glory and placed outside the team's current Auckland Viaduct base.
The boat was one of two used by Team NZ during a campaign that ended when it crossed the line first on that famous day in March.
"Thanks to Sir Stephen Tindall, who has looked after NZL60 for the last 20 years and now she's going to be down at the viaduct for the public to enjoy and see," says Team NZ shore base manager Andy Nottage.

Headed by Luca Botter, the company has a lot of experience with this type of build, is located near the project manager, client, and interior designer Nauta in Milan, and understands the client’s vision: ‘pulita, semplice, veloce’ - clean, simple, fast. Moreover, they saw the opportunity for Karma to pave the way for further semi-custom builds of the MD75 design.
With the green light to proceed, work started immediately to outline the geometry with the boatyard’s technical office led by Giovanni Pizzatti

RYA Showcase Accessibility Of Foiling With Launch Of 'How To' Video Series
The RYA has launched an exciting new mini-series of videos aimed at both aspiring and improving foilers.
The six week series hosted by foiling experts; RYA Coach Assessor, Shaun Priestley and RYA Windsurfing Trainer, Sam Ross, will cover both sail foiling and wind foiling. Each video will introduce and explain the techniques needed to get the most from your time on the water, taking viewers from their first flights, to sustained flights and even mastering those foiling gybes.
RYA Chief Instructor, Amanda Van Santen said: "Foiling has certainly taken the industry by storm, but for many of us it can still seem out of reach and daunting - when actually foiling has never been so accessible.
"The advances in foiling equipment and adaptations are truly incredible, placing the experience of taking flight into the hands of many everyday sailors, windsurfers and opportunists. You only need to pop down to your local beach or water to see the plethora of equipment flying!
The video series will kick off at 11am today (Friday 31 July) with an introduction to sail foiling first flights. A new video will be released on the RYA YouTube channel each Friday:

Cork Harbour's traditional boat fleet got a new gaff rig arrival this season when Crosshaven trawler skipper Gus O'Donovan launched his refurbished 1998 pilot cutter.
Gus bought the reproduction cutter on the east coast last year and was busy over the winter restoring her that included a new paint job.

Gus buys paint in barrels for his trawler, so now she's the same colour as the Majestic IV, part of Crosshaven's fishing fleet.
The 18-footer was originally named Panacea when she came from Dun Laoghaire. Gus told Afloat that although it can be considered bad luck to change a ship's name, a translation can be acceptable so the fishing smack is now known as Uile-ioc, as Gaeilge.

Royal Huisman in the Netherlands has inked a deal to build the Nauta Reichel Pugh 151, an aluminum and carbon design that internally is being called Project 405.
The 151-foot yacht is being built for experienced owners who want to sail the world and take top prizes in regattas.
Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport is representing the owners. Nauta Design is handling exterior and interior styling. Reichel/Pugh has been tapped for the yacht's naval architecture. Rondal will design the carbon Panamax rig, and Royal Huisman will lead on engineering and construction.
Delivery is scheduled for 2022-and construction is being planned with "intelligent lockdown" measures in mind, with respect to the Covid-19 pandemic.
