Gargnano, Italy: Event 1.2 of the Persico 69F Cup starts Friday, July 24th, in Gargnano. After the first act, ending last week with the victory of FlyingNikka 47 (Lacorte - Zennaro - Bressani), it is already time for the second set of races.

The event brings to the water crews who have a history: from the historic "reunion" between Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol, who sailed together on 470 at the London 2012 Olympics, now coming together again for their debut in foiling as part of Marco Gradoni's crew. Gradoni is a three-time (consecutive) Optimist World Champion and the winner of one of the most prestigious awards in the sailing world, the "World Sailor of the Year"; what will the most promising 17 years old sailor in the world do on foils?

Also present at the starting line is the "infamous" Claudia Rossi, who returns to racing with Persico 69F after the lockdown. She is hoping to perform well, because she is looking to also participate this season in the "mixed", with her Olympic dream connected to it.

Also participating will be the young crew of the Dutch Kingdom Team: four under 25 who have chosen to train on the Persico 69F to fulfill a dream, to take The Netherlands to the Youth America's Cup. In Gargnano they will participate in the official training - two boys and two girls, born between 1998 and 2000 - who will be called upon to storm the YAC in early 2021 in New Zealand: attention is focused on them, because the games for the America's Cup under 25 have just begun, and the Persico 69F is the only single-type foiling crew currently able to train teams in the set up similar to that of the YAC.

Closing out the teams is the Swiss crew, who already participated in first event, and brings to the second stage new crew members and extra experience.

2020 52 Super Series Season is Cancelled, Roll On 2021
Organisers, team owners and stakeholders have taken the decision to cancel TP52 World Championship which were due to take place between 14th and 19th September in Puerto Portals, Mallorca.

All of the parties involved have made very effort to set up a safe, inclusive and fair world championships but strict travel restrictions remain in force in Russia, South America and the USA, where many team owners and sailors come from. These seem increasingly unlikely to have been relaxed significantly before September. Correspondingly New Zealand has very strict quarantine requirements for everyone returning to the country after any spell overseas. And in mainland Europe, Spain especially, there are a growing number of local lockdowns as well as a general increase in personal safety requirements.

The 52 SUPER SERIES has recently published its exciting 2021 calendar which includes two venues which are new to the class, Saint Tropez and Baiona.

Henri-Lloyd New laws have come into force in the UK today and wearing a face covering is now mandatory when in shops and supermarkets.

During the 'lock down' period, Henri-Lloyd used their European factories for an alternative production. Working in-line with the government's guidance, they created a range of comfortable, breathable and reusable non-medical face coverings, perfect for sailing and sporting activities alongside everyday use.

With wearing a face covering becoming the 'new normal', even INEOS TEAM UK have been sporting them during recent training sessions, Henri Lloyd are offering Scuttlebutt readers an exclusive 15% off their range. Public voting introduced for 2020 World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award
Public voting has been introduced for the 2020 World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award as the nomination period officially opens.

The World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award celebrates the effective execution or ongoing delivery of high-impact, highly-replicable sustainability initiatives, aligned to World Sailing's Sustainability Agenda 2030.

This year's award is set to build on the momentum of the past two years by introducing a public vote to help decide the winner, alongside an expert panel of judges.

In its third year, the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award showcases the leading marine-focused sustainability initiatives.

Entries must show alignment with at least one of World Sailing's Sustainability Agenda 2030 targets, and we would encourage submissions which have taken place or been carried out within the last 12 months.

The winner will receive a $10,000 USD prize to help further their sustainability activities, as well as an iconic trophy made from recycled carbon fibre which was sourced from an America's Cup boat and infused with bio resin.

Laser Masters Sailing
A new website for Laser Masters... run by our favourite bon vivant John Robo Roberson, who's currently confined to dreary old Fremantle, replete with sunny skies, fresh winds, nary a hint of Corona virus, handsome men, beautiful women, obedient helpful children and superb wines.

Some updates:
South Fremantle, Western Australia: 23rd July 2020

Kerry Waraker is still optimistic that he will get a good turn out for the South Pacific Laser Masters Championships at Brisbane's Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Despite the deteriorating Covid 19 situation in New South Wales and Victoria, he is hoping to get at least forty entries.

"The only stopper would be if New South Wales got worse, or they closed Sydney down", he commented optimistically. He believes there is still time for restrictions to ease up before his event starts 7th August.

Currently there are 28 entries, with the majority being standard rigs, but he expects this number to swell in the next two weeks.

The Norrkoping Sailing Society's Euro Masters Regatta, scheduled for 8th - 9th August on the waters off Arkosund, Sweden, as been cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Mikkel Gade, Chairman of the Sailing Committee, said in an undated statement, "Under prevailing conditions regarding Covid19, NSS has decided to cancel Master Laser SM 2020. The basis for our decision is the imminent risk of infection spreading in the installation areas and other common areas with the public. Our staff largely belongs to the risk group in terms of age and must not be exposed to virus infection.

"We hope for your understanding. We intend to apply for the event for 2021 and welcome you all again to Norrköping's Sailing Society in Arkösund."

Arkösund is described by Google as "a village in Sweden", and is situated about 110 kilometres south of Stockholm. It looks like a beautiful place to sail, but I bet the water is cold!

We hope they will be able to host the Euro Masters next year.

Gladwell's Line: A Cup Milestone
American Magic, the team of the New York Yacht Club, left their COVID-19 required 14-day quarantine, Wednesday, and hoped to be sailing by the end of the week.

There was too much breeze for sailing on Thursday - and probably too much for a first sail on Friday.

Saturday looks to be ideal. However, Auckland's weather is highly changeable as we have seen with Emirates Team New Zealand's program - and handy three and four-hour weather windows often make a surprise appearance.

The first challenger sailing on the Waitemata is a milestone event for the 36th America's Cup. For the doubters, it is a very visible signal that the event will take place.

For New Zealand sport it is a big step back to normality. American Magic is the first international sporting team to be allowed into New Zealand to compete post-COVID-19.

For American Magic, it marks the end of a sailing hiatus that has lasted five months.

In the context of a "normal" America's Cup cycle, a five-month sailing time-out ending four and a half months before the start of the first Cup regatta would be terminal.

The Earls Court boat show is to return in 2021.

The show - albeit virtual - will take place under the name of UK Boat Show, offering visitors the chance to visit stands, chat to exhibitors live, watch demonstrations, take part in webinars and do virtually everything that can be done at a physical show - except meet up at the Guinness stand.

It is organised by life-long sailor and virtual technology specialist Andy Beharrell and Beryl Chalmers, former Cruising Association general manager.

UK Boat Show is a social enterprise and the event will be non-profit-making.

Profits from the show will be divided between Sailability (sailing for disabled people), marine conservation charities and sailing as rehabilitation charities.

The show will take place from January 7 - 10 2021. Tickets are available from ukboatshow.co.uk

The Andrew Simpson Foundation and GP Watercraft have teamed up to help increase participation in sailing.

GP Watercraft is providing Andrew Simpson Centres with demo foiling boats for use on RYA foiling courses, national foiling initiatives and performance foiling programmes. The partnership will help offer foiling tuition on purpose-built, user-friendly foilers for all ages of sailor.

The Skeeta is GP Watercraft's latest third generation foiling dinghy and is designed by Skeeta Foiling Craft. Marketed as the ultimate all-found foiling dinghy, the Skeeta is said to have excellent handling and stability in displacement mode. The dinghy has a scow hull and freely-pivoting foils and over-rotating rig. Its wings can be removed in less than five seconds.

The Nikki is a new dinghy aimed at younger sailors. With a fully open, modern scow, the Nikki has a simple foiling system which reduces the chance of foil crashing and wings which can be installed or removed in seconds. The two-piece carbon fibre mast has different length mast bates to suit the sail size.
