Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championship
After a great deal of work in conjunction with RYA Cymru Wales, and our event partner the Royal Dee Yacht Club we have decided to go ahead with this year's Championships, in a "stripped down" fashion, but still provide interesting and challenging racing in a variety of formats. To comply with government regulations that exist at the time of writing, we have made some changes to the format of the event which are reflected in the Notice of Race (NOR).
The main change is that all classes will use bridge starts, to avoid the need for committee boats and reduce the numbers of race management volunteers. We will have one rib for laying a mark to assist with course setting.
We recognise that short handing sailing is more demanding, and courses will be set with longer legs to allow for crew manoeuvrings!
We are proposing a more laid-back regatta, for competitors to get out on the water with friends and family and enjoy some fun racing, in a less formal way.
The entry process is open, and we have significantly reduced the entry fees, and look forward to welcoming as many boats as possible to our event.
On the Pontoons:
Again, this year berthing on the Plas Heli Pontoons is free for competitors during the event. Spaces are limited so it will be on a first come basis. Please adhere to the pontoon protocol for the use of the pontoons.
On the Deck and Bar:
Plas Heli will be open as normal, and we propose to not organise any formal social activity, but hope we can all enjoy the facilities for apres sail

Registration Open For The Barcolana Presented By Generali
Starting today, July 21st, registration is open for the 52nd edition of the Barcolana presented by Generali, which will take place on October 11th in Trieste (Italy), which will be preceded by- starting on October 3rd - events planned at sea and on land.
Having confirmed categories, route, date, time, and registration fee, the Barcolana regatta will take place in the Gulf of Trieste on October 11th, starting at 10.30am, and will announce important news regarding the procedures for registering, dictated by the need to avoid gatherings and to comply with safety regulations.
Starting today, Barcolana 2020 enrollment will be online, at the website www.barcolana.it; When completed, you will be sent the bag, gadgets and all materials - including their bow number - in order to participate. The SVBG's organization has had to make significant changes to enhance their online platform: the entire enrollment process, and more generally The Barcolana website and e-commerce have been upgraded and made better from the point of view of the user experience by Barcolana's digital partner, IKON. In addition to this "digital evolution", a call center, built in partnership with IS COPY, will be available to help those who are not familiar with the online enrollment process.
"Mandatory" Mooring - To avoid the clustering of boats along the Rive, the organizers of the 2020 edition will require the owners to have - and indicate at the time of completion of their registration - a mooring booked for the period in which they will be in Trieste to participate in the event. To facilitate the arrival of crews from afar, more than 400 free moorings will be set aside by the organization.

Tom Dolan Vying for Lead in Closing Stages of Drheam Cup
County Meath Solo sailor Tom Dolan is dicing for the lead this morning in the closing stages of the double-handed Drheam Cup as the fleet close in on the La Trinite sur Mer finish line.
A determined Dolan - who is sailing with France's Francois Jamnbou - is making good on his pre-race commitment to make amends for a mid-fleet performance in last month's Solo Maitre Coq season debut.
This morning Dolan and Jambou are heading south with under 70 miles to go in the 400-miler that started on Sunday.
The French-Irish pair, competing in the Figaro Duo class, are just .5 mile behind leader Guy Environment (Pierre Leboucher) in the seven-boat Figaro duo class.
As well as being second in class, Dolan's Smurfit Kappa - Concarneau Entreprendre Ireland campaign is also lying in the top ten of the 100-boat Drheam Cup overall.
What We Learned From The Vendee-Arctique-Les Sables D'Olonne Race
Jeremie Beyou won the Vendee-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne race, concluding what proved to be a thrilling three-way match up with Charlie Dalin and Thomas Ruyant. Tip & Shaft shares some of the lessons that we learned, debriefing with the help of the race director Jacques Caraës, Antoine Mermod who is president of the Imoca class, the weather routing specialist Jean-Yves Bernot, skipper Romain Attanasio (who did not participate) and the journalist Didier Ravon.
The favorites sailed true to their seeding
Before the start, our Tip & Shaft experts that we interviewed predicted a podium consisting of Beyou-Dalin-Ruyant. And they were right. This trio did not let up during the 2,807 mile race.
While the top three clearly earmark themselves as contenders for victory in the Vendee Globe, all our experts question their ability to live long term with the pace, as the new ones set new levels of discomfort but also the older generation with big, new foils, they are infernal in high-speed conditions.
"There are times when they can't move in the boat at all," comments Romain Attanasio. "This time they had transitions that allowed them to relax and get out of their seats, but we'll see on the Vendee how they'll do if it lasts several days. That is going to be quite a challenge. This is almost the first time a skipper will have to slow down because he can no longer stand the 'living' conditions on board."
What is not so obvious, according to Didier Ravon: "Four years ago, Armel finally did not foil so much in the South, but now, down there with their big foils, they're not going to be able to retract them (apart from Armel Tripon who has this option on L'Occitane)."

Back Out On The Small Boat
It's lighter, smaller, and easier to throw around. It's great to be back out on the small boat, Te Kāhu.
The RestartSailing Group came together at the start of C19 pandemic lockdown, with the sailing community working together to help get sailing restarted once restrictions were eased to allow a return to the water.
Two of the key objectives of RestartSailing have been to support activity to get people back to sailing at their local clubs and supporting the marine trade, so we are pleased to announce the inaugural RestartSailing Regatta on 30th August 2020.
On 30th August 2020, sailors will be able to compete in physically distanced club-races at their local club, with local races all around the country (and across Europe) sailing around average laps courses. The SailRacer GPS App and trackers will record the number of laps sailed, distance sailed and average time. No local race Committee is required, and sailors choose when to start within a starting window; their local course is conveyed to sailors by their club-lead before the start. Results are then combined centrally to build up a National results leaderboard.
Making extensive use of technology to help with physical distancing, briefings and prize givings will all be handled online, with even a post-race drink in the virtual club house via Zoom, and any protests also handled online.
The RestartSailing Regatta will be broadcast via Facebook live with top Olympic coach Jon Emmett providing expert commentary, with sailor interviews and updates from a number of clubs.
To help clubs get up to speed, RYA National Race Officers, Paul Jackson and James Ripley will be working with clubs to help them prepare to host their event. Online entry will be handled centrally via the SailingClubManager RestartSailing website, with on the day registration and declaration of fitness to sail also online. Host clubs will have the opportunity to run a practise event ahead of the RestartSailing Regatta.
The RestartSailing Regatta will be open to a variety of sail boats as per the entry criteria at each host club.
The RestartSailing Regatta will be a fantastic opportunity for the sailing community to work together and hopefully celebrate a return to sailing at the end of the summer. The flexible format has been designed for the RestartSailing Regatta to operate under evolving C19 guidelines and to adapt to any variants that may be current at the end of August.

2021 Australian Yachting Championships update
The 2021 Australian Yachting Championships that were scheduled to be held in January next year have been postponed after a review by Australian Sailing.
Australian Sailing will now be exploring options to hold the event from mid-2021.
Several factors were considered when postponing the regatta from its usual January timeslot, one of which was the impact on entries created by the uncertainty of interstate travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Australian Sailing would like to thank the clubs who expressed an interest in holding the event this summer and reconfirm our commitment to hosting the regatta in the updated timeframe next year.
With the 2020 Australian Yachting Championships held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in January this year, by postponing the event until at least July 2021 it will ensure annual continuity of one of the premier keelboat regattas in Australia.
Australian Sailing will open a new Expression of Interest process to host the postponed 2021 event when there is more certainty around when the event might be held.
The boat show season will start next month and while many shows have been cancelled, others are determined to continue if at all possible.
In recent months IBI has been reporting on numerous cancellations of shows due to be held in 2020, so in contrast we thought it would be worthwhile and helpful to mention those international shows which are still on course to open their gates to the public between now and the end of October.
The first European post-pandemic lockdown exhibition is anticipated to be the Helsinki Afloat Show, which is due to take place from the 13th to the 16th of August.
Helsinki should be followed by Bater I Sjoen, the in-water show in Oslo, from the 5th to the 8th September.
The Atlantic City in-water show in the US is scheduled for the 10th to the 13th September and its veteran show promoter Jerry Flaxman told IBI this week that he is raring to go and will have full safety and security measures in place.
Next will be the Cannes Yachting Festival from the 8th-13th September whose organisers Reed Expo have surmounted numerous obstacles to ensure the show proceeds. Apparently after wavering a number of key companies are now committing to exhibit as there is a sense that this is likely to be a show not to miss out on.
Following Cannes the Grand Pavois in La Rochelle will open for business on the 18th September and will run until the 23rd. This show is a strong selling exhibition serving a large part of western and northern France and is well-timed for the manufacturers who exhibit both power and sail boats up to 18m.
The first show to be held in Germany since boot Dusseldorf last January follows in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance which has had a great track record over the years and draws a large attendance from the south of the country as well as from Austria and Switzerland. It will run from 21st-29th September.
In the US, the Newport and Tampa IBEX and the Tampa public shows have all recently been cancelled and the next major shows scheduled are at Norwalk in Connecticut (19th-22nd September) and the very well-established and attended Annapolis Sail Boat (3rd-6th October) and Annapolis Power (10th-14th October).
While other Swedish floating boat shows have closed down due to Covid-19, sailing yacht producer Hallberg-Rassy says it intends to host its Open Yard as planned from August 21-25 in Ellös on the island of Orust.
This year, however, will see some major differences. There will be a maximum of 50 visitors inside the yard's production halls at one time and visitors will have to keep their distance. There will also be a limited number of visitors on board each boat at the same time, but thanks to a rolling schedule and extended opening hours there can still be a total of around 1,400 people spread out over time. Everything will be held according to the Swedish Public Health Agency's recommendations.
New-boat exhibitors confirmed so far include Arcona, Bavaria, X-Yachts, Hallberg-Rassy, Najad, Malö, Sweden Yachts and CR Yachts. There will also be a preview of the first two Hallberg-Rassy 50s in production.
Oyster Yachts has announced it is recruiting over 100 people to join its workforce. With shipyards in Southampton, Wroxham and Ashmanhaugh, as well as offices in Palma and the US, this will expand the UK based company's headcount to over 400 people internationally.
The skills required are predominately within production, with the company looking for experienced laminators, joiners, finishers, electricians and engineers. There will also be opportunities for a number of apprentices to join the company and benefit from time honoured experienced craftspeople within the business.
Oyster Yachts has a full order book for its hand-crafted bluewater sailboats which currently range from 56 to 120 feet and the company is announcing a new sub-50-foot model later this year.
The company started a recruitment drive in November 2019, at that time advertising for 150 new staff. Mujgan Trowbridge, Head of Group HR for Oyster Yachts said, "Despite Covid-19, we managed to hire 64 people, most of whom were required at our composite technology centre at Ashmanhaugh. We are now actively seeking a further 100 staff, 60 to join our Wroxham facility before Christmas 2020 and 40 in Southampton by March 2021."
Speaking about the expanding workforce, Oyster CEO and owner Richard Hadida commented: "After two years at the helm this is a hugely exciting time for Oyster. I'm passionate about Oyster and the skills required to build our beautiful yachts. I will be delighted to welcome more of the very best master craftspeople to the team. In addition, we are continuing to invest in Oyster apprenticeships to grow and safeguard great British boatbuilding skills for the future."

Rhode Island, US-based boatbuilder and marine service firm Waterline Systems announced Monday that it has leased 70,000sq ft of production space at the former Hatteras Boats facility in Hubert, North Carolina, giving the company a significant local presence in the southeast US market.
The company says the facility offers excellent direct access to both the Intra-Coastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean on a secure, protected site, representing a key opportunity to develop its boatbuilding, service and storage businesses in the region. The site also offers excellent access to the I-95 highway - the main north-south corridor along the US east coast - providing an opportunity to serve large numbers of trailered boats as well.
Launched in 1988, Waterline Systems manufactures Alerion sailing yachts and North Rip fibreglass centre console fishing boats under the Waterline Systems banner, along with a range of aluminium, steel and composite commercial craft sold under its US Watercraft branding.
Jaspersen was an industry stalwart and innovative builder who recently reported success with his new HammerCat design. He also helped spearhead the Cape 31 sports keelboat and worked previously for Southern Wind Shipyard and Voyage Yachts.
Rob Sharp, a close friend and prominent broker from Abromowitz Sharp, said Uwe's death "leaves a legacy and hole in the industry with shoes that will be immensely hard to fill.
"The yachting world has lost a master boatbuilder and is a poorer place for it," Sharp said. "From repairing Whitbread boats and later Volvo boats to building multiple boats here in SA including long stints at Southern Wind Shipyard and Voyage Yachts before breaking out on his own, Uwe was hugely dedicated to the cause of upping the boatbuilding game here in SA.
"His skills were not limited to boatbuilding and was a handy designer himself. He could do anything with carbon and was the go-to guy here in SA for carbon work in the marine industry," Sharp said.
