Emirates Team New Zealand Responds To Allegations
Whomever has leaked to the NZ Herald the MBIE and Auckland Council letter to ETNZ and ACE has conveniently not provided the reply provided by ETNZ and ACE last week.
ETNZ and ACE categorically deny any wrongdoing and consider that they have already addressed the concerns of MBIE and Council, and their advisor Beattie Varley.
For clarity, ETNZ and ACE set out below the relevant extracts from ETNZ's and ACE's joint letter to MBIE and Council last Friday.
The items detailed include:
- On Health and Safety
- On the Event Investment Dashboard
- On the $3,000,000 purported loan
- On the Hungarian Bank Account Fraud
- On the Lack of Record keeping and unwillingness to provide information.

What Can A Socially-Distanced Regatta Look Like?
The 2020 Lake Max Vanguard 15 Series may have been the first US regatta held since the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Quick thinking and teamwork sparked innovation, and Sail22 and the Chicago Vanguard 15 fleet created a new way to regatta - MarkSetBots, virtual skipper's meetings, chalk talks informed by drone video & GPS, and more.
A step up (in every sense)
In Italy, Seahorse previewed the new Mylius 60 Canting Keel, which made its world première at the Genoa Boat Show in September 2019. It is a yacht that redefines the genre of performance cruisers and it is currently the only canting keel production model of that size on the market.

Socially Distanced Safety at Sea (Round 2!)
Join Oakcliff July 11 for the country's only socially distanced Safety at Sea seminar. This two part course (one part online and one in person) will teach all the basics of sea safety, from how to put together a deck vest to how to deploy a life raft and everything in between. In order to protect participants, the course will be strictly socially distant - classroom chairs will be 6 feet apart, no materials will be shared and everything will be thoroughly sanitized.
"I haven't heard of any of the hands-on Safety at Sea programs being held this summer because of COVID-19 besides the program here at Oakcliff," said course moderator Shelia McCurdy. "US Sailing has changed regulations to allow just the online course, but having physical practice is really what gets the information into your memory."
Hamble Classics 2020 - 21st-23rd August - open for 'pre-entries'
The 5th Hamble Classics Regatta at the Royal Southern Yacht Club on 21st-23rd August has opened for 'pre-entries' in anticipation of a go-ahead if the recent easing of restrictions is being successful. The event's organiser Jonty Sherwill commented: "Together with the Royal Southern we are monitoring revisions to the COVID-19 guidance and in response to enquiries from yacht owners the Club has opened its online entry system at https://www.royal-southern.co.uk/calendar/events/event/8116/ where the Notice of Race can also be downloaded. The safety of participants, volunteers and club staff is foremost in our minds as we head towards the event which will be run in accordance with Government and RYA Guidelines applicable at the time. It seems likely that crew restrictions and social distancing rules will still be in place but we aim to make it another enjoyable occasion for the yacht owners and crew, and the volunteers who help make it such a success each year".
As usual Hamble Classics welcomes the International Metre classes, Classic Racers, Cruisers and Dayboats, Old Gaffers, Spirit of Tradition Yachts and classic One-Designs, and with the possibility of extra racing on Friday 21st for Spirit yachts and other large classics, otherwise known as 'Big Classic Friday', which last year produced sensational images by Rick Tomlinson.
Pip Hare gets a Vendee Globe Sponsor

Noisy Boatyard Short Courses
A collaboration between the Franklin Wooden Boat Centre, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, Macquarie Point Corporation, and Carbatec - in 2021 we're proud to announce the first Noisy Boatyard Short Courses. This is a chance for Festivalgoers to get some serious hands on experience and come away with an object that you've created right on the Festival site. There are limited numbers, so if you're interested, read more about the courses and book quick!
The Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin has an exciting program of short courses ranging from one day to six days.
Just imagine after six days, you have constructed your 14 foot rowing kayak, and you are ready to load it on your roof rack ready for the water's adventure, wow. What about a five day course of oar or paddle making, your own oars or paddle hand crafted by you, with expert tuition?
May be of interest is a one day course of Fancy Nautical Rope Work, a Canvas Wooden base and ropes bailing bucket, or a one day Boat Lofting course and demonstration.
It's all possible thanks to the partnership with the training skills of The Wooden Boat Centre and the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
The Boat Festival is also pleased to partner with the Macquarie Point Corporation. We'll be using the Goods Shed facility on site to conduct the courses during the Festival period.
Etchells Australia President's Update
Mark Roberts, President of the International Etchells Class of Australia, updates us with exciting news about the season ahead, and reports on the ongoing hull review under the direction of the international body.
"The Australian Association has been using the winter months to plan for what should be a cracking summer. The instigation of new initiatives, such as the Etchells Championships League, which will allow our fleets to race in home waters, whilst at the same time competing against their mates from across Australia is just one of the exciting new things that our members will have coming into the new season. We also launch a new Australian Championship regatta series, and will continue to promote and assist Corinthians with free coaching at major national events. All in all, it is going to be a very big year, and I can't wait!"
In January of 2020, Roberts advised that following queries concerning the Australian mould, the Governors of the international body had asked for scans of two boats from each of the three builders to form the basis of an audit of the fleet. "In short, we are still very early on in the process of review, and due to COVID-19, progress has understandably been slow."
"Further, by reason of limited financial resourcing in the international body, the proposed scanning of six boats was regrettably reduced to only one, which was a boat from the Australian mould. That scan was then compared with a single scan of an Ontario boat that was generated around 15 years ago. Limited by reason of the sample size, and also queries around the robustness of comparing scans in this way, the International Class is now looking to other forms of testing in the hope of advancing the review, and shining light on what is currently pretty unclear in the minds of many."
"It is of course well known that all three manufacturers have always produced boats that are not identical. This is the product of Etchells being built from three separate moulds across three continents. However, the class rules then ensure that there is indeed a certain 'sameness' by requiring that all Etchells, regardless of the builder, fit within well-defined tolerances that encapsulate the measurement process. I do not feel anything shown to date allows one to make any kind of informed decision about whether the known differences between the three manufacturers is anything other than noise." -- John Curnow
A cautious return to cruising
Over the past few months, the Cruising Association's RATS (Regulations and Technical Services) group has been hard at work researching, collating and compiling weekly updates covering the UK, Europe and the Mediterranean, since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Following three months of Covid-19 restrictions, overnight stays away from home are permitted in England from July 4 onwards, including staying on boats. This means a cautious return to cruising for those who keep their boats in England.
Similar changes are already in force in Northern Ireland and are expected in Wales and Scotland by mid-July. Schengen countries of the European Union aim to get back in sync after July 1, with most borders open and random testing only.
For those in England whose boats are in other countries, travel to the boat without quarantine may now depend on "air bridges". Travel to Sweden or Portugal is still not advised, but countries covered are expected to include Spain, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Turkey, Germany and Norway. Greece is not now permitting direct flights from the UK until after July 15.
It is not yet clear what the rules are if you travel to countries in your own boat, or via an indirect route. The RATS team continues to update the country-by-country Covid-19 information on the CA website, which changes frequently. Anyone interested can visit the site to read the latest rule changes.
Spain was one of the first countries to open to foreign visitors. Its "new normality", likely to apply in many other countries, includes:
- Social distancing of 1.5m from anyone who is not a member of your family
- Use of face masks if you can't keep 1.5m away from others, on public and private transport, and in busier streets
- Use of hygiene measures
- Fines of €100 for those who break the rules

NZ loses a giant of boat designing and building
Well known designer and boatbuilder Jim Young passed away on June 18, aged 94.
He is best known for designing the first canting keel in New Zealand, probably anywhere in the world, and his NZ 37, Young 88 and Young 11 designs have been highly successful worldwide, providing joy to cruisers and racers alike. He also had a major influence on powerboating, and the Vindex and formula powerboats were decades ahead of their time.
Young was recognised for his contribution to yachting and boating in 2012 when he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit and had been looking forward to watching next year's America's Cup from his lounge in Takapuna.
In 1993, two of his designs won division one and division two of Cowes Week, a remarkable feat.
Young always had an altruistic view of yacht design and boat building, with the consumer always at the forefront of his thinking.
Young is survived by his wife Anne and a large family of children, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Of the grandchildren, a few will try to carry on his name in one way or another. Stephen Young is at Southern Spars / Rigpro in Palma, James Hilt served his apprenticeship at Yachting Developments and went on to win a major contest with a design he helped create in Sydney, Kelsey Muir is vice-commodore at the Ponsonby Cruising Club and Aaron Young is vice-commodore at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
