Contributions welcome, send to Raw Emotions On The Route Du Rhum-La Banque Postale Race record holder and 2006 winner Lionel Lemonchois seemed to think his race was over when the mainsail headboard car lashing on his Multi 50 Prince de Bretagne failed last night and he could not retrieve it. The erstwhile class leader had already turned for the Spanish coast after one effort to retrieve it. But the news came just after midday today that he had managed to climb the 25 metre mast and had re-set his mainsail, setting off in pursuit of class leader, three times class winning Franck-Yves Escoffier. And there was quiet satisfaction for Franck Cammas on the big green miles eating machine, Groupama 3, as he extended his overall lead to nearly 250 miles. Groupama 3 had covered 472 miles in the 24 hours to 1600hrs this afternoon. Cammas was making easy miles today but was preparing himself for a more testing conditions ahead. In the IMOCA Open 60 class Armel Le Cleac'h has held a solid lead for more than 36 hours now, although Roland Jourdain (Veolia Environnement) had pulled back to within three miles of Le Cleac'h with Christopher Pratt still holding a great pace and rhythm on DCNS 1000. During the night Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel) and a sleeping Marc Guillemot (Safran) missed each other by a matter of 50 metres, de Pavant woken by his radar alarm unable to hail his sleeping friend and rival, who this time last year was his main sparring rival in the Transat Jacques Vabre. In the Class 40 fleet it is still Thomas Ruyant on Destination Dunkerque who is leading by just 1.8 miles over Sam Manuard on Vecteur Plus and Bernard Stamm in third place has a deficit of 6.3 miles on the leader. * At 1648hrs (GMT+1) the skipper of Oman Air Majan, Sidney Gavignet called to say that his boat has suffered a major damage to the leeward front beam. Oman Air Majan was sailing in headwinds of 20 knots, but the conditions were not extreme. Sidney Gavignet has activated his distress beacon. He has put on his survival suit and is uninjured. He is in the central pod and is clear of the water. Course Director Jean Maurel is in contact with the Poruguese MRCC to coordinate the rescue and is in permanent contact with Sidney and his shore team. At 20: 51 CET (GMT+1) skipper Sidney Gavignet was picked up by a bulk carrier called Cavo Alexander which was en route to Turkey. Sidney is safe and well and is in contact with his shore team via satellite phone. The bulk carrier is 840 miles from Gibraltar and is expected there in two days. Oman Air Majan is being tracked via its iridium-tracking device and a salvage operation is well under way. * At 0130hrs last night Rhum class skipper Christine Monlouis contacted Route du Rhum La Banque Postale race director Jean Maurel, to alert him to the fact that she had suffered a collision with a fishing vessel. The impact dismasted her 16m aluminium Un Monde Bleu Tout en Vert. The fishing boat stayed on station to help. This is a cruel blow for the first West Indian woman to take on the Queen of the Transats. www.routedurhum-labanquepostale.com From The Monsoon Cup To His Future In Match Racing WMRT: You are currently in 7th place on the standings ISAF WMRT. Will you consider this season a success if you win the Monsoon Cup? Bruni: "We have decided to participate because we want to close the season by participating in the event that is the most prestigious of the entire season-we want to prove our worth". WMRT: The top five teams in the current standings (Richard, Minoprio, Ainslie, Mirsky and Williams) are all in with a chance to win the ISAF World Match Racing Championships?? this year. Who do you think will win it and why? Bruni: "I don't think Richard will miss this opportunity and I hope he doesn't. He has never won the Match Racing World Championship - he has finished 2nd and 3rd before, and this would be the proper recognition for a very successful season. He had a dip in the middle of the season which allowed other teams to come back into the fight for the championship, but Richard has the experience to win. I'll be cheering for him." WMRT: What are you and your team's plans for the future in the WMRT? Bruni: "I don't know exactly what my future will be, but I want to stay competing on the WMRT. Team Azzurra has decided not to participate to the America's Cup and I hope that my future will still be in the America's Cup. The America's Cup is a match race and the WMRT is always the best battlefield in match racing". WMRT: What are your views on the announcement made by the America's Cup and do you feel this will impact at all on the future of the WMRT? Bruni: "For me, the WMRT will live its own life because it is a circuit that is now very successful regardless of the decision of the America's Cup. The WMRT format is working very well and is very addictive. A Common Goal for Offshore Racing The intention is for RORC/UNCL and ORC to create a joint venture company which would run the existing rules, IRC and ORC and then in time, using the combined knowledge and resources, evolve new rating systems that combine the benefits of IRC and ORC to create fast, fun and seaworthy boats for unified competition all over the world. Bruno Finzi, Chairman of ORC, working alongside Vice-Chairman Wolfgang Schaefer, are enthusiastic and confident about working with the RORC. "We appreciate the work and friendship with RORC and we believe it is finally time to get back to the IOR era and to the ORC founding spirit, when only one single rule was recognised as 'the international' rule in offshore sailing." Sebastien Cattelan is the new record holder of France and Europe with 55.49 (1st to 55 knots). He held the outright for 1 hour before Rob improved upon it. Charlotte Consorti did 48.5 on the display, followed 30 minutes later by Sophie Routboul with 48.64 speed. Sophie could only do 2 runs as she has a broken hand. Charlotte went back out later and did 50.43. The first lady over 50 knots !!! 3rd Alex Caizergues with 54.93 (France) Taro Niehaus had 50.59, he beat the SA record few days ago with 50.60 knots. The journey was completed in two stages. The first saw Phoenicia depart from Syria in Summer 2008 and sail East as far as Yemen. After a short break, she completed her circumnavigation past Oman and Mozambique, around the Cape of Good Hope, out to the Azores, and through the Straits of Gibraltar via Tunisia, Malta and Lebanon to her final port of Arwad, where she arrived to a crowd of over 2,000 well wishers on 23rd October. The homecoming was celebrated with a gala dinner held at Tartous. The Phoenicia expedition was conceived by Philip Beale, a former British Royal Naval Officer and entrepreneur. It is being featured in a national television documentary 'Ancient Worlds' to be shown on BBC2 in the autumn. Industry News Volvo Ocean Race has supported the forum since the first edition in 2008 and members of the Volvo Ocean Race management and operations team will be attending. Frostad believes this forum is important for the evolution of the sport on a global platform. "The yachting industry needs more platforms to promote and share the growing sailing initiatives around the world. It is also important for us all to learn from each other and from other sports so we can increase the interest in sailing in general. This forum helps this process immensely and is a fantastic place to network." On the first day of this international event, Knut Frostad will be representing the Volvo Ocean Race in the panel of discussion on 'What is the future for sailing's premier events'. Next year's 80th Anniversary Race is being held on Saturday 25th June and the first gun is at 0600hrs. -------------------------------------------- German boatbuilder Bavaria is among the parties currently in talks to acquire troubled Italian yard Cantiere del Pardo, producer of sailboat brand Grand Soleil, as well as its sister brand Dufour in France. Bavaria's new CEO Jens Ludmann confirmed Bavaria's interest in the two brands when speaking to IBI today. Ludmann said that Bavaria is in ongoing negotiations with several parties concerning plans for the group. He refused to comment on what the potential deal would be worth. Italian private equity group Orlando is also reported to be interested in Cantiere del Pardo, which is understood to owe over €100m. Cantiere del Pardo and Dufour are part of holding company ISB (International Sailing Boats). Private equity investment firm Rhone Capital LLC became ISB's majority shareholder in March 2006. Bavaria's current investors Anchorage Advisors LLC and Oaktree Capital Management acquired control of the German boatbuilder from private equity firm Bain Capital in 2009. -- International Boating Industry news, www.ibinews.com -------------------------------------------- A new technology in sail making has North Sails expanding its workforce and footprint in Minden. North Sails last week broke ground on a 53,000-square-foot facility on Business Parkway to house equipment for its latest product line. North Sails operates out of a 79,000-square-foot building on Heybourne Road and occupies an additional 22,000 square-foot industrial space nearby, but the company will terminate its lease on the smaller facility once its new building is complete in May of 2011. North Sails General Manager Jeff Neri says the company is phasing in a new sail-making technology to remain in front of its competitors. The company has been developing a filament-and-adhesive process that makes for a stiffer sail. "Stiffer is better in sail making," Neri says. "It is going to usurp the high-end sail - it is the next big thing." Unfortunately, the impact of the credit crisis on our industry played havoc with advertising revenues and made it impossible to continue to produce the high quality content we strove for. Ultimately we had no choice but to liquidate TKZ in September. But this doesn't mean the end for fans of Cowes Online and iZone because a local company, Big Screen Media, has bought the assets and will continue to publish both Cowes Online and the iZone screen network in Cowes. Oman Sail is an ambitious national programme to develop the sport of sailing within the Sultanate of Oman. The Race Team's remit is to establish competitive inshore and offshore teams supported by a sound technical and logistical infrastructure. The team's development must at all times be aligned with the programme's broader national objectives.
