Vladimir Proshikin's chartered Volvo 70 E1 (RUS) crossed the finish line at 12.35 today, in fourth place on elapsed time. The Russian sailor, from St Petersburg competed last year on his Shipman 72, a performance cruiser/racer, quite the polar opposite of this five-year old round-the-world ocean racer. But it was Bryon Ehrhart's TP52 Lucky, that crossed the finish line after 3 days, 3 hours, 16 minutes, which put the US boat on top of the leader board on corrected time, for now. The Chicago-based skipper/owner has had the Rolex Middle Sea Race on his 'to do' list for awhile and has methodically planned a race schedule - that included last year's Rolex Fastnet Race - that would give them some good practice and put them in the Med this year. Jonas Diamantino's Comanche Raider II, from the Royal Malta Yacht Club, has been taking a pasting but spirits are high, as he explained as they passed Pantelleria earlier today. "Pretty hectic, pretty scary. We got hit by a 45-knot squall, with very confused seas, and it was all on. But everybody is fine and so is the boat, but it was a tough few hours. We are now doing ten knots and heading for home. Tell the bar at the club to get the beer on ice!" Lucky are currently leading overall on corrected time in IRC, but they have to withstand challenges from at least two boats that are in contention for the overall win. Sort of like history repeating itself, the two boats are the Lee Satariano & Christian Ripard's J/122 Artie, and John Ripard & Andrew Calascione's J/133 Jaru. The last time a Maltese boat won the Rolex Middle Sea race overall was Market Wizard in 2002 with Ripard & Calascione, and in 2001 it was Christian Ripard's Straight Dealer. The Maltese Beneteau 411, Fekruna, retired just west of Stromboli, bringing the total number of retired boats to eight, with eight boats finished and 60 still racing. The race fleet can be tracked online at www.rolexmiddlesearace.com/tracker/#tracker Bruno and Loick Peyron Join Together to Challenge for the 34th America's Cup A meeting between Russell Coutts, representing the Defender and organiser of the 34th America's Cup, and the Peyron brothers was held in Paris on Friday, to discuss how France could take part in such an ambitious project as the America's Cup. Bruno and Loick Peyron have also announced they are in talks with Stéphane Kandler, Jochen Schümann (twice winner of the America's Cup) and their ALL4ONE team, with the prospect of bringing the two groups together. Are the French able to win the America's Cup, the world's oldest international sporting trophy? A goal, which France, ever since Baron Bich's first challenge in 1967, has been unable to reach. It is certainly a very complex project, even though no one doubts the ability of French designers, sailors and builders, this is not by itself enough to guarantee success. The teams sailed a double round robin. Final Results: Claire Leroy and team (FRA) have won Women's Match Racing National Championship in France held over the weekend of 15-17 October. Veolia Maris, designed by the late Alan Payne and built of timber in Hobart by the famous Jock Muir in 1958, will be in line to win the IRC rating division for an unprecedented third consecutive year. Skippering the classic yawl will be Tiare Tomaszewski, a grand daughter of the original owner, marine artist Jack Earl. Balance is French-designed Beneteau First 45 built to the latest composite construction methods, owned and skippered by television financial commentator Paul Clitheroe, and launched in 2008. She jumped to equal favouritism with Veolia Maris with an impressive overall win last Saturday in the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's historic Gascoigne Cup off Sydney Heads. A fleet of 17 yachts, including four from Queensland, will be flagged away from Broken Bay, north of Sydney, at 1.00pm next Saturday, 30 October. The start line will be set between Barrenjoey headland and Lion Island. From there, the fleet will sail close inshore up the New South Wales Central Coast for about six nautical miles before rounding a mark off Terrigal and then setting a north-easterly course to World Heritage-listed Lord Island Island, a tiny, semi-tropical island across the northern Tasman Sea. The three IRC division placegetters are competing again - Veolia Maris, representing the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Amante (Dennis Cooper) from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, and Copernicus (Greg Zyner) from Manly Yacht Club. Last year's PHS winner, the Queensland yacht Charlie's Dream, skippered by Peter Lewis from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, is back again as is third placegetter, the Gosford Sailing Club entrant Polaris of Belmont (Chris Dawe). Another strong contender in the PHS division will be Peter Rodgers' Olsen 40 which was overall PHS winner of last year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Rodgers has been a regular competitor in the Lord Howe Island Race, winning the PHS division in 1997. Gilmour, who swept the Qualifying Session 1 with a perfect 8-0 record, started the Qualifying Session 2 on a winning note when he defeated Mark Lees (GBR) Team Echo. However, Corbett and his Malaysian crew - Mohammad Razali Mansor, Azhar Saadon Zubir, Rafiz Ibrahim and Hairolnizam Hat - stopped his winning run when they won their match by 49 seconds. Scientists probing the shores of the lough found a tiny cuttlefish not seen since the 1980s, so they decided to hand it to the aquarium at Exploris in Portaferry. But the intrepid cephalopod made a daring Great Escape, squeezing its way down the drain of the tank where it was being held - and vanished without trace once more into the waters of Strangford Lough. Dr Julia Sigwart, director of Queen's University Marine lab at Portaferry, said the Houdini-like cuttlefish was captured by an undergraduate student. The animals are reasonably common along Northern Ireland's more exposed coasts but haven't been seen in Strangford Lough since the 1980s - until now. "They're called Sepiola atlantica, the little cuttlefish. There were records of them from the late 1980s but the Aquarium at Exploris weren't sure whether they were still in Strangford Lough," she said. Cuttlefish prey on small crustaceans, Dr Sigwart said. My aim was not to go sailing single-handed. I did the Mini for that reason and then got the great opportunity to be able to do that in the Class 40 as well. Now I am a racer, I am a competitor and want to do well. I really appreciate the position I am in. It is something I really want to advance because in the future I want to set up my own design career. At the moment I am very fortunate to do so well in the sailing as a skipper. Of course I want to do well in this race which everything is well set up to do well in, the boat is ready, I have good sails, a good boat, good speed, good spirit and no stress - all the conditions to do a good race." Industry News The regeneration of the East Cowes harbour is a joint project between SEEDA, the Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) and the Crown Estate. The firm, which will retain its management, sales and support staff, will be renamed Garmin Norge AS. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
