All-Female Team Challenging for Lead at Halfway Mark of EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour
With just two stages remaining of the 14-day EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour in Oman, the all-female team DB Schenker is increasing the pressure on the top of the leaderboard.

After three stages and covering more than 1,000KM of the pristine and scenic Omani coastline, team EFG Bank remains the one to beat in the 2020 edition of EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour and leads for a third consecutive stage. But the fight for silver is heating up, with DB Schenker quickly closing in on Groupe Atlantic.

There are only six points separating the second-placed Groupe Atlantic from DB Schenker in the overall standings, following a strong showing from the all-female team in the third of the five stages that make up the tour.

Stage 3 of EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour was held in Masirah Island, a wildlife haven off the east coast of Oman that is growing in popularity with kitesurfers worldwide for its flat aqua water and consistent breeze.

While Groupe Atlantic remains second in the overall standings, DB Schenker claimed the silver spot for the Masirah Stage.

Stage 4 of the 2020 EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour will be held in Sur, a port city on Oman’s eastern tip that is famous for its Green Turtle nesting grounds and reserves. The two days of racing will begin on Wednesday 5 February, with the teams to then head further north to Muscat for the title decider on 7-8 February.

Warren Jones International Youth Regatta
Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Swan River, Perth, Australia; The semi finals was a strong, 1 for 1 battle for both matches. Harry Price took the win over fellow Cruising Yacht Club of Australia teammate, Tom Grimes, whilst Nick Egnot-Johnson managed to steal the second spot in the final from Will Boulden. An intense, high energy battle was showcased in the final in front of several hundred spectators in the stadium venue that Perth Waters provides. Harry Price continued his dominance, taking the final 3-0 over Nick Egnot-Johnson and secured his second Warren Jones title!

Harry Price won the Warren Jones Regatta back in 2018. In 2019, he returned to Perth to defend his title, but finished in third behind Jelmer van Beek, Team Dutch Wave, from the Netherlands and Will Boulden, Alpha Racing Team, Western Australia. In 2020, Price showed up early, put some time in on the Foundations and executed a skillful, strong and consistent campaign which left him dominating for the majority of the regatta. With an entirely different crew than when he won two years prior, Harry claimed the title as Warren Jones Regatta Champion one last time as he ages out in the next 12 months ahead of future Warren Jones Regattas.

Marsden and McGovern defend their title at the fiercest of Tiger Trophies
Photo by Tim Olin, olinphoto.co.uk. Click on image for photo gallery.

Tiger Trophies Neil Marsden and Jonny McGovern stormed to victory in their 420 at what many competitors described as an ‘epic’ Tiger Trophy, the seventh event in this season’s Selden Sailjuice Winter Series. While there were 148 entries, Saturday’s three back-to-back races were among the windiest ever contested in the 11-year history of this Series, with gusts up to 35 knots. In those conditions, only the bravest and most experienced would be able to cope. Marsden and McGovern won a breezy Tiger last year and with the wind even fiercer for 2020, the 420 proved itself the perfect weapon for survival conditions.

Marsden and McGovern won the first race of the day, but they were pipped to first place in the next by reigning National and European 505 Champions Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane. However, with a DNC against Gilbert’s scorecard, it was left to another 505 - wife/husband duo Penny and Russ Clark - to take up the reins. With only two of the three scheduled races taking place on Saturday, the Clarks were lying in second behind the runaway 420 at the end of day one, with a 2,4 scoreline compared with Marsden’s 1,2.

Winner of the previous weekend’s Sailjuice event, the King George Gallop in North London, Jon Emmett raced his Laser Radial very effectively around the quadrilateral course to notch up some very useful scores of 5,3 to sit in third place overnight. Not bad for a hiking boat!

The following day saw more strong breeze for the two-hour Pursuit Race. Once again the Marsden/ McGovern 420 could not be stopped, although they were pushed hard by a rival 420 sailed by Arran Holman and former 420 World Champion helmsman Steve Irish on the wire.

The final event of the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series takes place at Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford on Saturday 15 February. The past couple of years have seen the Oxford Blue sell out to its 150-boat capacity and with most of this season’s events booking out in advance, it’s best to get your entry nailed while you can at: www.sailjuiceseries.com

The prizegiving for the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series takes place at 1015am soon after doors open on Saturday morning of the RYA Dinghy Show. After Oxford we’ll find out who gets to take the top step of the podium at Alexandra Palace on 29 February.

CG66 Ceases in July
As the 2020 sailing season approaches, the Regulations and Technical Services committee (RATS) of the Cruising Association (CA) reminds cruising sailors that the voluntary safety information scheme known as CG66 (after the form that owners completed to register) ceases in July 2020. Now is the time to make sure you've registered with its replacement which is RYA SafeTrx.

RYASafeTrx aims to provide a similar Search and Rescue (SAR) database to the CG66 scheme with the added advantage of additional methods of adding data and of communication. The system is managed by the RYA but open to all boat users. It is not necessary to be a member of the RYA to use it.

Details of vessels, their communications and safety equipment and of emergency contacts are entered in one of two ways. The first is by using the RYA SafeTrx website which is at: safetrx.rya.org.uk

It is necessary to register in order to enter data. -- Peta Stuart-Hunt

The Nacra 17 & 49er International Classes are thrilled to announce our partnership with FORWARD WIP becoming our Official Technical Clothing Partner.

The five-year sponsorship agreement will run until the end of 2024 and will see both partners work collaboratively to further develop and market the sport in new and existing territory.

Thanks to a long expericence in designing light and innovative protective gear for the last 2 America’s Cup and SuperFoiler Australian Circuit, Forward WIP is one of the leader in Foiling Action Sailing equipment. Since, many of Olympic Sailors choose WIP for the combination of protection with performance and style.

With the arrival of the foils on the Nacra17, the 49er which remains a spectacular and fast boat, and the hard work of the International Class on safety measures for years, there are real and good synergies between these three classes and Forward WIP.

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) in Sydney and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) in Auckland take great pleasure in announcing Moonen Yachts as the naming rights sponsor of the inaugural Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race 2021.

Moonen Yachts is a Netherlands-based builder of luxury superyachts recently acquired by Australian owners, Matthew and Louise Baxter.

The Baxters first connected to the brand when they spotted a Moonen yacht in Pittwater, where the RPAYC is also based: “We were curious because she stood out. It was love at first sight,” Louise Baxter commented.

“The brand is impeccable, no question, and the team is very talented,” added Matthew. “They’re all very passionate about what they are building.”

Matthew and Louise Baxter live in Sydney and are no strangers to yachting. “I started sailing when I was eight,” said Matthew, who heads AM Group, a global group of manufacturing companies he founded in 1972 - the same year the couple bought Barbarian, a Sparkman & Stephens design, which they still own. The pair subsequently purchased a Finnish Swan 60.

Open to yachts, inclusive of a double-handed division, superyachts, multihulls (OMR rated) and incorporating a rally for cruisers, the Moonen Yachts Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race is less than a year out now and has already attracted serious interest from some high-profile yachts and crews and others who are keen to make their mark in the inaugural race. -- Di Pearson

More than 250,000 visitors from 106 countries visited this year’s boot Dusseldorf, with organisers declaring it to be a great start to the new decade and the best show yet.

With a focus on sustainability, the show saw a large emphasis on alternative drive systems, boat construction from renewable raw materials and international ocean protection projects.

The event – with 1,900 exhibitors in 17 halls – encompassed much networking for trade visitors together with a vast array of products and services plus sailing yachts, motor boats, dinghies, luxury yachts and inflatables.

CEO of organisers Messe Dusseldorf, Werner Dornscheidt, summarised the nine-day show: “boot has developed into something far more than just a trade fair,” he said. “It is an event with huge innovative and economic significance, while representing passion for water sports to a unique extent as well. In the past few days, the trade fair has demonstrated the amazing appeal boot has all over the world.”

The show achieved a satisfaction rate of 96% from visitors, with the Wave particularly popular with numerous world champions providing demonstrations.

boot 2021 will take place from January 23 to 31.

Vale John Power - "This is Castle One, out."
It is with great sadness that I write to report the passing of John Power, who died in the early hours of 4th February 2020 after a short illness.

He was probably best known as “Castle One” (and sometimes “Castle Two,”) giving Cowes Week and other regattas a unique VHF flavour with his crystal clear, slightly Connery-esque diction, rigidly sticking to a script that he devised and evolved over several years at the mike.

I recall a Swan European regatta some years ago when, at one of the parties on the RYS lawn, a very elegant crew member on one of the entries expressed a strong desire to meet the enigmatic owner of the voice behind the microphone. It was somewhat to my father’s chagrin that, on seeing him in the flesh, so to speak, he thought she appeared visibly disappointed.

There cannot be many regattas where post racing beer tent ribaldry often involved mimicking the bloke who’d read the course out, a few hours earlier.

He will be greatly missed.

Castle One, out.

With best wishes from his son Richard Power and the rest of his large family
