Applications Sought For Second Ian Atkins Keelboat Award
The John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST), the charity set up in memory of 1996 Olympic Silver medallist John Merricks, is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the second annual Ian Atkins Keelboat Award.
This award has been made possible thanks to the generosity of US company, Dominion Enterprises, owners of the businesses that Ian ran for many years (including the boat sales websites boats.com and YachtWorld) and who wished to recognize his extraordinary career, on his retirement after over 40 years in the marine industry. Ian is also well known as an enthusiastic, active, keelboat sailor with an outstanding record of success in yachting both at home and abroad.
This Award is open to any sailor or sailors, under 25 years old, who require funding to help them transition from dinghies to keelboats. The award will be a bursary of up to £5000 to be awarded to the sailor(s) who most impress the awards panel consisting of Ian Atkins and the JMST Trustees.
This will be the second of 5 separate bursaries to be awarded annually. Applications each year will be judged on the track record, commitment, future potential and financial need of the applicants as well as the scope and ambition of the project or program.
The inaugural Ian Atkins Award in 2019, gave Team Athena Racing the opportunity to compete at the Nations Cup in San Francisco, the Women's Match Racing Europeans, Youth Nationals as well as to retain their Marlow Ropes Women's Match Racing National Championship title.
Please include name and age of applicant(s), sailing club, details of the project or program including its goals and predicted impacts, specific financial need, plus any references (inc contact details). Applications from under 18s must include the contact details (including e-mail address) of their parent or guardian.

J70 class joins the Copa del Rey MAPFRE
As of this year, for the first time the 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE will incorporate the J70 class. This popular sport keelboat class, which is especially strong in the USA and Europe arrived in Spain in 2015. The J/70 has seen about 1,500 boats built worldwide of which half - some 750 - are in Europe and 50 in Spain. That makes it the world's most popular one-design keelboat class.
There are very competitive fleets in Italy, France, Switzerland, UK, Germany, the United States, Argentina, Russia, Poland, the Netherlands and Sweden and it is expected that regatta on the Bay of Palma will attract a strong entry.
Manu Fraga, race director, highlighted "The effort that both the RCNP and the class have made to make this exciting new initiative happen is considerable. The logistics required to bring the fleet to the regatta and to provide the racing means an added challenge for everyone, both on the water and on land. Transport on land and the demand for participation will force us to set a maximum number of boats for this class."
With the incorporation of the J70, now four classes will compete in real time -that means the first boat that crosses de finish line wins- in the 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE.
The 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organised by the Real Club Nautico de Palma and the Real Federacion Española de Vela (Spanish Sailing Federation), and is sponsored by MAPFRE with institutional collaboration from the Govern de les Illes Balears (Balearic Islands Government), the Ayuntamiento de Palma (Palma Town Hall), the Autoritat Portuaria de Balears (Baleares Port Authority), and the Federacion Balear de Vela (Balearic Islands Sailing Federation).

49ER, 49ERFX, and NACRA 17 Oceania Championships
Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis (USA) used superior boats speed upwind in the flat water to narrowly win the Oceania Championship by three points from Zajac/Matz (AUT) and Gimson/Burnett (GBR). On a blustery final day the American's got a 1, 3 battling tightly with the Austrians who scored a 2, 1 and won the regatta by three points.
Noting that this is just a warm up regatta, John Gimson and Anna Burnett opted not to sail the final race today to instead further focus on preparation for the upcoming worlds.
Also feeling good out of the Oceanias are the two Spanish teams in skiffs. Diego Botin and Iago Marra won the only 49er race of the day, while Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barcelo had a 3rd and a 1st in their two races today, to win the championship by the greatest margin of the lot.
The World Championships begin racing on February 10th and run through the 15th
Under The Hood: Tom Johnson's Moth

18ft Skiffs Australian Championship, Races 3 & 4

Sydney Harbour, Australia: The Smeg team of Micah Lane, Ricky Bridge and Peter Harris recorded a double victory on Sydney Harbour today when they scored two come-from-behind wins in Races 3 and 4 of the Australian 18ft Skiff Championship.
Trailing Tech2 in Race 3, Smeg showed exceptional downwind speed on the first lap of the course to grab the lead, then extended her lead throughout the rest of the course before going on to a 52s win over the defending champion Shaw & Partners Financial Services team of James Dorron, Harry Bethwaite and Tim Westwood.
Aron Everett, Courtney Mahar and Charlie Gundy continued their consistent form over the entire season when they finished third in The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines, a further 17s behind Shaw & Partners.
In the latter race, Finport Finance (Keagan York, Matt Stenta, Greg Dixon), which won both Race 1 and Race 2 of the championship, held the lead over the first two laps of the three-lap course and looked likely to score another win, but the Smeg team relished the freshening SE breeze to grab the lead and go on to a 24s win.
Jack Macartney, Phil Harmer and Trent Barnabas were never far from the lead and finished in third place, 23s from Finport, and only 5s ahead of fast-finishing Appliancesonline.com.au (Brett Van Munster) and Noakesailing (Sean Langman).
With little between the top teams over the tight courses sailed so far in the championship, the points table reflects the openness of the series with five races still to be sailed.
Race 5 of the Australian Championship will be sailed this Sunday.

International 5O5 World Championship
Torekov, Sweden: The local businesses in Torekov are all pulling together in support of the upcoming 5O5 World Championship. Accommodation providers are holding open reservations for anyone competing in or associated with the Event. After 21st February these hotels will be opening their bookings to other holiday makers and it will be a busy time.
Torekov is located on the west coast, in the southern part of Sweden. Torekov is a popular summer resort, sandy beaches, great sailing and a village full of different activities. The wider Bastad municipality has 15 000 permanent inhabitants. In summer the population grows to more than 50 000 people. The bay has fantastic sailing conditions and is recognised by many sailors as one of the best sailing arenas in Europe.
Over 150 boats are expected for the event from all over the world. As usual for the big 5O5 events, the competition will be hot as many of the world's best dinghy sailors will be contesting for the coverted crown. Many say the hardest World sailing event to win.
The racing kicks off on 14th August with a 2 day Pre-World event followed by the main regatta of 9 heats over 6 days finishing on the 22nd August.

Danish capital to host ROCKWOOL Copenhagen SailGP in September
Copenhagen, Denmark: SailGP today announced the ROCKWOOL Copenhagen SailGP will take place in the Danish capital on September 11-12, marking the fifth event in the global championship's second season. ROCKWOOL will be the Title Partner for an event that will see seven national teams compete in the world's fastest sail racing in Scandinavia for the first time, while the home crowd will get the chance to cheer on Nicolai Sehested's Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL. Tickets will go on sale in April.
SailGP Season 2 kicks off on February 28 in Sydney, and will be followed by events in San Francisco, New York, Cowes (UK) and Copenhagen. For the first time, a Danish team will compete against defending champion Australia, along with France, Great Britain, Japan, the United States and fellow new entry Spain, vying for sailing's largest monetary prize of US$1 million.
In addition to the rich sailing history in the country, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability in Copenhagen, which aligns with SailGP and ROCKWOOL's goals and makes it an ideal venue for the championship. Copenhagen - named the world's top city for 2019 by Lonely Planet - set a bold goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 percent by the year 2030.
The event is set to have a ticketed and free spectator area at the cruise terminal at Oceankaj adjacent to Nordhavn, with an on-water option to share the waters with the record-breaking F50s. The racing will take place on the water's edge, with fans able to be just meters away from the high-flying action.

Feisty first act of MC38 2020 season goes to Lightspeed

Middle Harbour Yacht Club, Mosman NSW, Australia: The MC38s are back at it and the new season began with fireworks, Lightspeed struck hard by Lazy Dog in a port/starboard incident in fresh conditions on Saturday February 1 and unable to finish the day, but ultimately returning to claim top regatta honours.
It was the one time the class opted not to use on-water umpires; a decision Australian president Shaun Lane says is a test case that won't be repeated.
With owner Steve Barlow out with a shoulder injury, Lightspeed was helmed by James Mayo, best known as crew on the champion Etchells called Magpie, the current Australian titleholders and runners-up at the class' world championship in 2019.
Mayo's had his eye on the MC38 class for a while and jumped at the chance to drive. "We trained on Friday in 26 knots which was a good learning curve. Over the course of the series I had to make sure I really focused on what the others, who know the boats best, were saying, and not let my instincts take over."
According to the protest outcome, Shaun Lane and Quentin Stewart's Lazy Dog, nicknamed 'naughty dog' after the Middle Harbour Yacht Club-run first act, failed to keep clear in a port/starboard and broke rules 10 and 14. They completed their turn at time but the jury imposed a much harsher penalty in the room, disqualification from race two.
"The bow of Lazy Dog hit our port side just forward of the last stanchion which meant when they disconnected from us they took all the lifelines with them, including the bow rail," said crewman Daniel Turner of the incident. "It was quite a large impact as both boats were fully loaded. The Lightspeed shore crew worked in the scorching sun all afternoon and Sunday morning grinding carbon and getting the boat back together. The good thing about racing one design is there are usually parts available, so boats can keep racing."
Lightspeed returned to the racetrack, The Sound area between North and South Head, on Sunday to complete three races under MHYC race officer Steve Tucker's direction. Their scores of 2, 4, 3, added to Saturday's 2 then average points for races two, three and four awarded by the protest committee, gave them the lowest score and the series win.
The next time the MC38s meet will be on Sydney Harbour for the 2020 Australian Championship hosted by MHYC March 13-15. -- Lisa Ratcliff
