Wet and Wild Penultimate Day of Sail Melbourne International
It was a challenging day for sailors and race management alike with multiple storm fronts passing through Melbourne on the penultimate day of Sail Melbourne International making for another wild and fun day for the majority of the classes.
Despite the weather challenges several of the fleets managed to get all races in, while some were cancelled for the day due to high winds and sea stage.
Amongst those abandoned were the para-sailing classes 2.4mR and Liberty, as well as the Laser 4.7 which were cancelled for the day before going out. The International 505 class did venture out, but with winds increasing, racing had to be abandoned and subsequently cancelled for the day.
Tuesday will be the final day of Sail Melbourne International 2020 with another two races scheduled in most classes from 12:00 p.m.
Over 300 competitors from 25 countries are competing at Sail Melbourne International with racing to continue on Tuesday for the fifth and final day of the day of the event and with racing scheduled to commence from 12:00 p.m. at both Sail Melbourne International race venues Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Sandringham Yacht Club (Laser fleets).

The Tea Route : 180 miles ahead after two days of racing
It is clear that in spite of the demanding conditions, everyone is enjoying being back sailing on the high seas, as they tackle their latest record attempt between Hong Kong and London. This morning, this has led to the crew of IDEC SPORT achieving a decent lead of more than 180 miles after the first days of racing over the time set by the holder of the Tea Route record, the 70-foot trimaran, Maserati.
Francis Joyon and his crew of four have been making the most of a steady NE'ly wind offering them downwind sailing since Saturday. IDEC SPORT has carried out a series of gybes to get around the countless islands in the South of China Sea and is due to cross the Equator once again later today. This will mark the symbolic entry into the Southern Hemisphere and will coincide with the wind dropping right off for the giant trimaran. The way through to the Indian Ocean via the Sunda Strait will require a lot of patience and concentration.
In the next few hours, the situation will change drastically in this race. After averaging more than 27 knots out on the water in the first 1300 miles, later today, they will find conditions that are increasingly calm. "Now, we only have sixteen knots of wind," said Joyon. "We are approaching the Natuna Regency in the hope of benefiting from a bit more wind. The seas have calmed down somewhat and there is not as much shipping around. We deliberately avoided the Vietnamese peninsula to get way from all the fishing boats. But as we approach Malaysia, we will once again encounter lots of cargo vessels and all sorts of shipping."

Most cruising catamarans are stodgy to sail, but Bénéteau's new Excess brand aims to bring back the fun. Excess cats are lighter and faster, more nimble and powerful, with a sail area : displacement ratio 10 per cent higher. How much difference does 10 per cent make? We sailed the first two models in Mallorca to find out.
First impressions
Walking along a dock towards an Excess cat, the first thing you'll notice is the exceptionally tall mast. The Excess 12 has a bridge clearance of 18.3m (59ft 11in), while the Excess 15's masthead is 27.9m (91ft 6in) above the waterline. And that's just the standard rig. The sportier Pulse Line rig adds another metre or two.

The 2020 Landsail Tyres J-Cup entails three days of exciting and competitive racing, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in the Central Solent. up to nine races will be held on two separate courses for one-design classes and racing under IRC for mixed divisions.

Day 1 at Hempel World Cup Series Miami
On Monday, the 182 sailors from 45 nations demonstrated their skills on spectacular Biscayne Bay in the first of six days of racing at 2020 Hempel World Cup Series Miami, uSA.
This event marks the second instalment of the 2020 Series and the only stop in North America.
The competition this week consists of fleet racing for all seven classes on Monday through Friday and Medal Races on Saturday, January 25 featuring the week's top teams. Medal Races will be broadcast live on World Sailing's YouTube Channel.
As the racing heats up in Miami this week, the sailors here also have their sights set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition, only six months away. This event is the final opportunity for North American nations to qualify for the 2020 Games across the 470, RS:X, Laser, Laser Radial and Finn fleets.
Olympic qualification is paramount for the 23-boat Laser Radial fleet. Aruba's Philipine van Aanholt, St. Lucia's Stephanie Devaux-Lovell, Mexico's Elena Oetling and Sofia Ximena Palacios, Puerto Rico's Sylvette Perez Figueroa and Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Arrindell are all aiming for Tokyo 2020.
Racing resumes on Tuesday 21st January at 11:00 (uTC-5) on Biscayne Bay.

European Yacht of the Year 2020
Every year, around 60 new sailing boats are launched on the European market. But only five shipyards can celebrate the title "European Yacht of the Year 2020". The tests took the jury members of the twelve sailing magazines from all over Europe to Port Ginesta, south of Barcelona, in October. All 16 candidates were thoroughly tested and evaluated. In total, the specialised journalists covered almost 2,500 nautical miles with the nominated yachts.
The respective yacht of the year reflects what's happening on the market in general. On the one hand, the latest trend is going towards increasingly larger yachts with customised interiors and numerous extras, and on the other, sport yachts are enjoying a surge not seen in a long time. Quite remarkable is the overwhelming dominance of French candidates. Since 2004, French boatbuilders have earned the title of "European Yacht of the Year" 31 times. For comparison: Germany and Italy, the second and third most successful countries, won only 16 titles between them in the same time.

Astus 22.5
Following the great success of the Astus 16.5 and Astus 20.5, Astus is expanding its product range, designed by VPLP Design, with the introduction of a new model, the Astus 22.5, which will replace the Astus 22.1 at the end of 2020.
True to the successful concept of the Astus trimarans, the Astus 22.5 will also have excellent transportability. This will allow you to explore many different areas that might have been inaccessible with a larger boat.
Another new feature of the Astus 22.5 is the option to mount foils (sold separately), which is now possible for the first time on the Astus trimarans. Foils give the boat more buoyancy, allowing it to glide even at lower speeds.

Hallberg-Rassy 40C
When the Hallberg-Rassy 44 was introduced, it was a bold step forward in terms of both interior comfort, sailing performance and looks. The new 40C is equivalent when it comes to saloon, aft cabin and galley. Combined with a cockpit that has exactly the same measurements as on the 44.
