On a day in which everyone had their chances, and the left side kept on giving, the race wins went to Prettynama (GER 79, Max Müller, Mark Dangel, Wiebe de Witte) and John B (BAH 22, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen).
While the forecast was not far off, the day promised more than it delivered with clearing skies, rising temperatures and a north-easterly breeze. However in contrast to previous days the nor’eastlerly never rose above 8-10 knots and spent most of the day struggling to build to more than 6-7 knots. However it was a great day on the water, more so after Sunday’s cold and wet conditions and was a great end to a fabulous championship.
In the whole 76-year history of the 5.5 Metre, only one skipper has ever won back to back titles in both the Scandinavian Gold Cup and the world championship - Kristian Neergard. Now he has repeated that feat and a word of warning for those looking to take over his mantle - next year’s events will be at his home club in Hanko, Norway.

10th World ARC Sets Sail from Saint Lucia
Saturday 11th January marked a special day in World ARC history as the 10th edition of World Cruising Club's round-the-world rally set sail from Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. 33 yachts assembled at IGY Rodney Bay Marina, marking an end to years of planning and the start of an epic 26,000nm circumnavigation, with crews from 23 different countries sailing their own yachts to some of the world's best cruising grounds. It is a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for the crews to cross the world's oceans, explore some amazing islands and experience a range of different cultures.
There was a strong 20-25kt breeze over the bay at the start with the ENE gusty wind providing a good run down to the first mark at Barrel of Beef Island.
First over the line was Finnish boat Marja II, a Malo 46 Classic, followed by the Swan 46, Milanto. Tightly grouped together, next over the line was Amel 55 Zarya and Next Step, a Bavaria 46. Despite being a rally not a race, skippers and crews were certainly enthusiastic to cross the start line with the remaining boats quickly following on behind.
In total, 41 boats will sail with the rally in the next 15 months; some sailing the full 26,000 miles, others joining for the Panama Transit, or sailing to Australia before taking a year out to further explore the Pacific.
Next stop for the fleet will be Marina Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The stopover is one of the most popular on the World ARC route, with plenty of good food, exceptional beaches and warm hospitality awaiting their arrival. The boats should make landfall from Thursday 16 January. Their progress can be followed online via the Fleet Tracker on the World Cruising Club website.

Recently one member of the Harken Tech Team and three members of a 40' boat crew started a retrofit at 9 a.m. and were out sail testing the system by 4:00 p.m. the same afternoon. Watch the installation.
McPherson & Lewis blast their 420 to Bloody Mary glory
Dylan McPherson and Jack Lewis followed in the footsteps of some great names to sail their 420 to victory at last weekend’s GJW Direct Bloody Mary, the fifth leg of this season’s Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series.
The breeze sometimes gusted up to 30 knots, with some wondering whether they would be able to handle the conditions. Unfortunately for Nick Craig, the multiple Endeavour Trophy winner, the jib halyard on his GP14 snapped as he was preparing to launch off the busy slipway. He busied himself with helping others launch, whilst cursing his bad luck at not being able to compete at an event which he is yet to win.
Hatty Cage hadn’t sailed for four years, having previously won the RS Feva Worlds and been one of the top 29er sailors in the country. It was a very windy return to the sport for Hatty, crewing for her dad Rob in a Merlin Rocket that hadn’t been out of the garage for a few seasons. While the Cages headed into the fray, a few of the 287 entrants took the wise decision not to launch, although Queen Mary Reservoir in south-west London was still a sea of colour and thrills and spills as sailors battled with the gusty field of play.
Behind the battle for line honours were some interclass contests such as a close match race between two top-class 505s, with Paul Brotherton/ Russ Clark eventually prevailing over reigning National and European Champions and former Bloody Mary winners Roger Gilbert/ Ben McGrane. While the strong breeze made the event a benefit for the faster trapeze boats, two 2000s and one Laser, sailed by Ben Flower, made it into the top 10 under the Great Lakes handicap system.

Nominate young people for the trip of a lifetime
For the past 40 years MDL Marinas has developed a close relationship with Ocean Youth Trust South, recognising the charity’s fantastic work with young people and the life changing experience that sailing can offer.
MDL annually sponsors a five-day trip aboard Prolific for inspirational young people, which forms the basis of MDL’s Sail Training Awards.
MDL is looking for nominations for those who are 12 to 18 and who have overcome adverse personal circumstances, or shown other exceptional accomplishments and achievements. Third party nominations from people who are in contact with young people, including teachers, guide or scout leaders, youth group leaders, friends and employers are welcome, as are those from within the marine trade.
This year’s voyage takes place in April 2020 and the winners will become involved in all aspects of life on board, including hoisting sails, helping with maintenance, sailing the boat at night and cooking and cleaning with the rest of the crew.

Cape 2 Rio Race
Like greyhounds, the moment they were set free they were off at breakneck speeds for Rio, with the record books looking like they might well be re-written. Almost shadowing each other up the West Coast in the early stages, this looked like a match race made in heaven, but during the night they have shown they have different strategies as their paths have crossed - twice now.
‘Maserati’ is heading northwards, with ‘Love Water’ taking a more westerly course, and both doing over 20 knots of boat speed. This move is interesting as it looks as if ‘Love Water’ is sailing towards lighter wind pressure, and ‘Maserati’ into stronger pressure - but that was all in the 06h00 tracker info this morning. The 10h00 tracker detail shows that they are now back sailing parallel courses and closing Luderitz at 25-plus knots. ‘Maserati’ has covered 198nm in less than 20 hours since the start, and ‘Love Water’ 229nm. As always it’s a waiting game - and an intriguing one too.
For the monohulls that started in the second start, they have had good winds and are making good progress, unlike their counterparts who started a week earlier and were plagued with light winds for several days.

Miami and Melbourne open the Olympic 2020 Championship season
Two major International events for the Olympic classes kick-off at the end of the week . . . The Miami World Cup and Sail Melbourne.
For British interests the Miami event, the 2nd round of the Hempel World Cup Series will only have the Team GB Olympic pair Luke Patience and Chris Grube in the men’s 470. And they will face a quality fleet including all the teams that finished ahead of them at the 2019 Worlds, where they were seventh.
The men’s 470 event is one of the better attended events and will include the top three from the 2019 worlds: Australia’s Mathew Belcher/Will Ryan, Spain’s Jordi Xammar/Nicolas Rodrgiuez and Sweden’s Anton Dahlberg/Fredrik Bergström.
In addition to the regular events Hempel World Cup Series Miami is hosting two events that are to be included in the Paris 2024 Games, a mixed 470 event, and a doublehanded offshore event within the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race.
More Olympic class action will be taking place in Australia, which has captured a star-studded series of world championships in what they are calling the Melbourne Summer of Sailing 2020. -- Gerald New in Sailweb
Hugo Boss Status And Repair
Upon arrival from the Cape Verde Islands, HUGO BOSS was moved to Southampton. There, a full NDT (non-destructive testing) of the boat was carried out in order to assess the damage sustained during the Transat Jacques Vabre.
We can now confirm that, as suspected, the damage is contained to the keel area. The rest of the hull, the foils and rudders are undamaged.
Following the NDT, our Composite team began working to cut away the damaged parts of the hull and structure. Together, our Structural Engineers, Gurit; Naval Architects, VPLP; Design Manager, Pete Hobson; and in-house team have been working to construct a full repair plan. This plan will allow our boat builders to move swiftly forwards with the work required throughout the Christmas period.
Our in-house technical team, meanwhile, has been focused on the remainder of the keel area, in order to identify the parts that require replacement. These include the keel, keel hydraulics and bearings, some of which have significant lead times and so it was imperative that we moved quickly.
We have appointed additional specialist resource in order to deliver the repairs as quickly as possible. This includes Pro Build Composites, who will continue to lead the repair programme, and Carrington Boats Ltd, the team who built HUGO BOSS and therefore know the boat very well.
The evergreen Ker 39 is a staple of the 40 ft racing scene. VENCOM has had continued maintenance to keep her up together and racing at the top end of the scene. Further investment in a new rudder design, and reshaping of the transom by Kneierim and Ker themselves. A very strong contender.
The OCEAN'S ELEVEN Class 40 is a Pogo 40 signed by Finot-Conq and built by Structures in France. Previously known as PICOTY with skipper Jean-Edouard Criquioche, he has always had good racing results. This sailboat is at the same time reliable, marine, well maintained and equipped. OCEAN'S ELEVEN also has a comfortable interior and is suitable for long-distance cruises with reduced crew.
