Opening day of the CST Composites International 14 World Championship at Perth Dinghy SC, Australia.
Results for Thursday show just five finishers in the practice, with all other competitors retired or DNC.
Brad Devine and Ian Furlong of Australia took the win ahead of Neale Jones and Edward FitzGerald of Britain.
First championship racing is scheduled for Friday 3 January.

Latest news from the International 14, Worlds Team Racing on Tuesday 31 December at Perth Dinghy SC, Australia.
Brief reports available have the British team, GBR, winning the CST Composites i14 Worlds Team Racing Finals on Tuesday.
Four teams made it to the semi-final round on Tuesday - GBR, AUS1, AUS2 and AUS3.
AUS2 and AUS3 went out in the semi-finals, leaving GBR and AUS1 to contest the final.
GBR won the first flight in the best of 3 race final.
AUS1 took the second flight, GBR then won the 3rd and final flight to win the i14 Worlds Team Racing Final.
Are You Doing The Double in May 2020?
In 2020 only five days separate the much loved International Paint Poole Regatta and the world famous Round the Island Race. For yachts participating in both events, exclusive special benefits have been arranged in Poole to provide a seamless experience.
The International Paint Poole Regatta 2020 takes place from the 23rd to the 25th May and the Round the Island Race on the 30th May. The Poole Regatta provides competitive racing across a variety of racing classes and in 2020 will host six class championships and three high profile race circuits. Coupled with its renowned evening socials it is a weekend not to be missed.
Competitors doing the double can take advantage of either a free swinging mooring in Poole harbour (subject to availability) or a discounted marina berth at Poole Quay Boat Haven for the four nights following Poole Regatta.
Poole Quay Boat Haven is a five gold anchor marina with superb facilities in the heart of Poole town. With the picturesque Jurassic Coast right outside the harbour and a multitude of bars, restaurants and shops only minutes away, it is the perfect place to prepare for your Round the Island Race following a fun weekend at The Poole Regatta. The swinging moorings are located overlooking Brownsea Island and offer privacy, peace and tranquility. They are serviced by launch for straightforward access to shore.
Alongside the berthing provisions, Poole Yacht Racing Association (PYRA) are offering visiting yachts free of charge entry to its feeder race from Poole to Cowes for IRC and VPRS classes on the 29th May. Any yachts wishing to return to Poole on Sunday 31st May can also enter the return race without charge.

Cape 2 Rio First Start 4 January
The Cape to Rio Yacht Race is South Africa's premier ocean sailing event and is the only transatlantic race to take place in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been held roughly every 3 years since 1971.
This famous yacht race connects the cities of Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro across the vast South Atlantic. With a course length of approximately 3600 nautical miles (6670 km), it is the longest single intercontinental race in the Southern Hemisphere, and attracts club and professional sailors alike. The race unites the iconic, exotic and historic in an incredible cocktail of deep blue water sailing, and has attracted 25 entries, ranging from hard-core racers, family cruisers, youth teams, to avid adventurers. Records will be broken and friendships made.
Now in its 16th edition, this race will have two start dates: the first start for the smaller boats on 4 January 2020, and the second start for larger boats on 11 January 2020. Both starts will provide an exciting spectacle and showcase of our city. By having two starts, the boats finish closer together in Rio. The prize giving will be held in Rio on 2 February 2020.
The grand prize is the "South Atlantic Trophy", which is awarded to the winner on handicap. In addition, there are prizes for the fastest participant, for a possible new record time and for the first on handicap in each of the sailing classes. The race is organised by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, in co-operation with Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro.

Red diesel use ends in Ireland
The use of red diesel for the propulsion of leisure craft will become unlawful in the Republic of Ireland from 1 January 2020. As a result, most marina fuel pumps in Ireland will only deliver fully-taxed white diesel and/or petroleum.

Notice to all Masters, Owners and Users of Pleasure and Recreational Craft. Prohibition on the use of marked gas oil in private pleasure craft. The [Ireland] Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport wishes to inform the public of the Department of Finance's intention to change the law regarding the use of Marked Gas Oil for Private Pleasure Navigation from 1 January 2020.
The requirement to amend the relevant legislation arises from a ruling made by the Court of Justice of the European Union in October 2018. Section 40 of the Finance Bill 2019 proposes an amendment to Chapter 1 of Part 2 of the Finance Act 1999 in order to implement the Court decision and ensure compatibility with the Energy Tax Directive (Directive 2003/96/EC) and the Fiscal Marking Directive (Directive 95/60/EC) on a legislative basis. The proposed amendment will take effect from 1 January. From that date, the use of marked gas fuel as a propellant by private pleasure craft will be prohibited.

Royal Cork Yacht Club's Tricentenary Year
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, President of Yacht Club de Monaco, hosted a special event on 19 October for organisers of Cork300 to show his support for the upcoming events series taking place in Cork in 2020.
The Royal Cork Yacht Club, which is the oldest yacht club in the world, will celebrate its 300th anniversary with an exciting series of events on and off the water across Cork harbour next summer, looking back at the origins of where sailing began. The historic celebrations will shine a light on the heritage of sailing and will serve as a significant milestone for the sailing community worldwide.
Yacht Club de Monaco, which is the only club in the world twinned with the Royal Cork Yacht Club, will help promote the Cork300 event series both within Monaco and internationally. It will also participate in a number of events in Cork next year.
Sailors from Monaco are also expected to attend the Royal Cork Fleet Review and Parade of Sail in Cobh, which will take place on July 12th, and will participate in a Wild Atlantic Way cruise along the West coast of Cork and Kerry, also in July. Many Yacht Club de Monaco sailors will also stay on for the famous Volvo Cork Week and the Three Championship Weeks in August.
The Fundamental Mystery of Knots
Color-changing fibers and mathematical theory combine to disclose the simple rules that govern the strength and stability of commonly used knots, researchers report. The new study addresses a centuries-old mystery - what makes knots work?
Fibers tied into knots and tangles remain one of humanity's most ancient and enduring technologies and play a ubiquitous, fundamental role in our daily lives. From ships' sails and shoes to micro-sutures and turbulent quantum liquids, it's well known that some knots are better suited than others for specific purposes - a fact that's given rise to a great variety of knotted structures.
It's known that the subtle interaction between topology (how a knot is tied), elasticity and friction give knots their inherent mechanical properties and strength. However, there remains no comprehensive mathematical theory capable of fully explaining how knots "work." Thus, the ability to understand why some knots hold fast while others easily slip currently evades explanation.
To address these long-enduring questions, Vishal Patil and colleagues developed an experimental and theoretical analysis that reveals the key rules underlying the mechanical stability of "bend knots," which are commonly used in both sailing and climbing activities. Combining optomechanical experiments using recently developed color-changing photonic fibers, which show stress differences in different parts of a knot and theoretical knot modeling, Patil et al. were able to quantifiably predict the strain distribution in a knotted structure and reveal several key topological factors that determine a knot's stability.
According to the authors, the framework could be used to design and explore new classes of knots with specific behaviors.
UK Sailmakers has expanded its worldwide group of lofts by adding a new sales office in Budapest, Hungary. Tamas Bakos, who has more than 20 years of experience as a sailmaker, is bringing his expertise to UK Sailmakers group. Tamas is one of the leading racing sailors in Hungary and campaigned Solings and Flying Dutchman in the 60s, 70s and 80s. On the other end of the sailing spectrum, he also sailed on IOR maxi boats.
Grand prix racing has waned in Hungary as in most sailing markets and has been replaced by performance cruising sailors. Those with production boats who primarily daysail and cruise may also race a few times a year. According to Tamas, even cruising sailors need well-shaped yet durable sails. "You don't want to scare your crew by having the boat heel over too much, which is what happens with blown-out sails," said Tamas.
UK Sailmakers' X-Drive sails are the perfect solution for 90% of the sailors in Hungary. The sails are durable enough for daysailing and cruising, while holding their shape well for several races each year. The biggest race in Hungary is the Kekszalag (Blue Ribbon Grand Prix) that is a 155 km race on Lake Balaton in mid-July. In 2019, 562 boats were registered - making it the regatta with the most competitors in Europe and many were Tomas' cruising customers.

After a year long cruising sabbatical, lead boat builder Paul Hakes is back to work at Hudson Yachts
It was a sad day for Hudson Yachts when Paul departed on sabbatical in January 2018. After 32 years in the industry building high end yachts and the last seven in China a break was needed for personal reasons. He spent the last year and a half refurbishing a yacht and cruising around Thailand and Malaysia.
We are delighted that Paul has recently returned and is back to work heading production operations at Hudson Yachts. As co-founder of HH Catamarans Paul has returned to the role of chief of operations China, but don't let that title fool you as he can also often be found happily chatting on the phone with a client about their latest ideas, or giving a sanding lesson to a new employee.
Dubai Harbour announced today that it has assigned D-Marin Dubai to operate Dubai Harbour's marina, the first and largest yachting community hub in the Middle East with 1,100 berths, scheduled to open October 2020.
