Ainslie used classic match racing tactics to continually attack Radich and his Gaastra Racing Team, ranked eighth on the tour. Radich's second place finish earned the team $20,000. Ainslie is the second skipper to win the King Edward VII Gold Cup Trophy two successive years since the event was reformatted in 1984. Russell Coutts had also pulled a double in 1992 and 1993. Earlier in the day 2008 Gold Cup winner Johnie Berntsson of Sweden won the Petite Finals to take third place and $10,000 over Eric Monnin's Swiss Match Race Team two wins to nil. Monnin's fourth place finish earned him $7,000 for the week. Saturday Matches had already determined fifth through eighth places. Adam Minoprio (NZL) was fifth for $5,500, Taylor Canfield (USVI) was sixth winning $,4000, Reuben Corbett (NZL) who was seventh took $2500 and Torvar Mirsky (AUS) at eighth won $1,000. -- Talbot Wilson Overall Results at the Argo Group Gold Cup 2010 ISAF World Match Racing Tour Standings Diogo Pereira Wins Renre Junior Gold Cup For this year's group of Junior Gold Cup sailors, there is always a series of firsts. For these young individuals, it was the first time they had ever been in an international regatta, the first time sailing in a race in front of a field of spectators and the first time - perhaps - overcoming fears to finish a race. "Sailing is a complex game and it is my job as their coach to help them understand that they need to perform at this level," said Paul Doughty, an ISAF senior instructor and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's development coach. "It is a performance and how well you are playing. Everyone needs some coaching and we are basically building them into good racing sailors." Three Bermuda sailors were in the top 10 overall in an event that featured 31 sailors from 14 countries overall. Sam Stan finished in third place, Antonio Bailey in eighth place and Rory Caslin who finished 10th. -- Laurie Fullerton in the Bermuda Sun Quantum Racing Clinch Second TP52 World Title
The long delay, waiting for enough of a settled breeze to allow competition to take place, only one race was possible, starting at 1517hrs. With a points cushion which meant that only one of these two could win the title, and Quantum Racing holding a three points cushion, the last race proved to be a tough head-to-head, match race as fully befits the America's Cup waters. While their title duel certainly warranted top billing, so too there were a set of supporting matches in the flukey 5-7 knots breeze - private battles and tussles to settle final results throughout the nine boat fleet. The other key match was for third. Russia's Synergy were seeking revenge over Artemis (SWE) with whom they tied for third on points in Palma last year. This time it was Synergy who prevailed, countback for third on the podium favouring their two race wins. Final Results 1. Big Breeze and Big Action as Guichard Retains Top Spot A consistent 20+ knots of breeze saw the Extreme 40s 'fly' along at boat speeds in excess of 30mph (46kmph). Today was about staying in control, minimizing mistakes and staying out of trouble. The race management decided that in light of the forecast the fleet would race in groups with no more than four boats on the race course at one time, set inside the tight confines of the port. Each group was determined by the current rankings after yesterday's racing. In the end, it was Yann Guichard's crew on Groupe Edmond de Rothschild who did it best, winning three out of their four races, and increasing their lead to 59 points at the top of the leaderboard The forecast for tomorrow is for less wind but that won't take the heat off the skippers as they head into the penultimate day of the final round of the season. The race of the expected winner, Esimit Europa 2, who sailed at her best, avoided all risks and aimed at setting a new record. The Dream team of Flavio Favini, with Alberto Bolzan at the helm, did not make a single mistake. From a perfect start half way on the start line, to the choice of sails avoiding the use of spinnaker which would have taken the boat off the course at the first mark (a mistake many made, betrayed by the feeling of going faster) The speed of the boat did all the rest: Reichel-Pugh design boat literally flew on the water. The last leg between Miramare and the finish line was favourable: Esimit Europa 2 did it without tacking, while many boats behind had to tack several times. The record time of 56' and 13" will be registered in the books of the Autumn Cup. Mitja Kosmina, the winner of Barcolana 2009, on Maxi Jena Amorikept pace of Esimit as far as the last mark. The second place was clinched as a true sailing champion. A problem at the Hydraulic system of the canting keel made manoeuvring of Maxi Jena Amori impossible, and they had a really tough time in the last leg before crossing the finish line. Behind him strong Andrea Nevierov at the helm of Beauxt Vte Tuttatrieste 1 was really close. Kosmina was able to come in second with just a few centimetres of a lead after an hour and a half or racing. Third came Beauxt Vte Tuttatrieste 1 thanks to a crew who took advantage of every tiny wind shift. Fourth finished surprising Shining Umag with Zeljko Perovic, fifth Idea Amori with Alberto Leghissa and sixth Tuttatrieste 2 with Furio Benussi. Among positive surprises are also a seventh place clinched by Vitrani, a TP52 perfect for today's conditions and led by the team of Gabriele Benussi (first in Category 0 ahead of great Orlanda of Filippo Sammarini), even if Vasco Vascotto was not on board, and ninth place of Montenegro Wild & Beauty with Riccardo Bonetti, first of the small fleet of Farr 80s. Velux 5 Oceans: One Week to the Start
Crowds have been flocking to the race village in the Bassin des Chalutiers since it was officially opened by the ocean racers yesterday. Thousands of visitors enjoyed the beautiful weather, music and the great atmosphere in the village. The race village is the largest in the Velux 5 Oceans' 28-year history and boasts more than 50 exhibitors from the La Rochelle region as well as daily music and dance performances. The pontoons have also been a hive of activity as the teams, many made up of volunteers, continue to prepare the Eco 60 ocean racing yachts for their huge global challenge. "The weeks go by so quickly and as we get closer to the start time goes quicker and quicker," said Canadian ocean racer Derek Hatfield. The skipper of Active House added: "You come here and you think you have three weeks to do your preparations and you think everything is sorted. Of course, things happen and the list gets longer and you just continue to work on it. We feel we're in a really good place. The new sails are coming on Wednesday so I think we'll get to go sailing on Thursday. The sails are really the last piece of the puzzle. This last week have tuned the mast and sorted all the containers. I'm starting to think about the start next Sunday and of course I'm starting to miss the family a little bit." Since dismasting en route to La Rochelle on Monday, Belgian ocean racer Christophe Bullens has been looking at possible Eco 60 yachts to charter. Christophe visited two Eco 60s in France this week with a view to chartering one but that is now not possible. "Our main partner cannot release the necessary money in such a short time," he explained. "There is still a possibility: Simon Chalk's boat, which was originally due to participate in this race, is available for rent. But if I leave on this race it is because I want to finish, so the only question now is whether the boat is ready to race. I won't know this until I have seen it." Simon Chalk left Falmouth in the UK on board his Eco 60 Ocean Planet, last night bound for La Rochelle. Christophe will then evaluate the boat when it arrives. Christophe and his team may have a race against time on their hands but he is determined more than ever to start the race. Australian skipper Garry Golding is still in Gosport dealing with problems to the mast of his Eco 60 Oz. He is doing all he can to make it to La Rochelle. Inaugural RC 44 Worlds Set To Commence In Canary Isles The RC 44 Class Association gained ISAF World status in June during its fourth season of competition. The world championship event holds added significance because it is also the fifth of six events that constitute the 2010 season championship. BMW ORACLE Racing leads the standings with 6 points, but three other crews are just 1 point behind. Included in that mix is Torbjorn Tornqvist's third-placed Artemis, led in the upcoming match racing portion of the regatta by Terry Hutchinson of the U.S. Hutchinson arrives in Lanzarote fresh off winning the TP 52 World Championship. The class also welcomes newcomers Synergy Russian Sailing Team and Peninsula Petroleum. Synergy skipper Maxim Logutenko raced in the RC 44 Valencia Cup as guest helmsman aboard BMW ORACLE Racing in the fleet racing portion of the regatta and placed fifth. Peninsula Petroleum is led by John Bassadone of England. The crew has raced extensively in the GP 42 Med Cup Series this year. The weather is shaping up to be windy and wet. According to noted meteorologist Chris Bedford, the weather gods got word that a regatta is going on this week and are arranging an unusual weather pattern. "Winds are expected to become somewhat fickle and changeable this week as a series of weather systems moves across the central Atlantic and toward southwestern Europe, disturbing the normally reliable trade winds that blow across Lanzarote," Bedford said. According to Bedford, tomorrow is expected to be unsettled as a cold front moves across the racing area. Rain squalls and very gusty winds are forecast in the morning followed by a drying period in the afternoon with moderate northerly winds. The match racing portion of the regatta is expected to begin Monday with the first warning signal scheduled for 1130 local. China Club Challenge Match 22 Competing Teams, 7 days of racing, around a dozen protests submitted and 6 heard, close to 30 races completed and 3 seminars run. I may be biased but the Committee Boat team and the Umpires of the China Club Challenge Match should be as proud of their achievements as the eventual winner of the event. The standards rise each running of the CCCM partly due to improving standards of sailors in any event but also because the event includes 3 evening of feedback and training seminars this year run very ably by Peter Backe (SWE) and Tim Somerville (AUS). Talented match racers in their own right, Peter has done a Monsoon Cup while Peter is the reigning Hong Kong Match Race Champion. Competition was fierce at times and extremely vocal and the early briefing sessions went to pains to encourage teams to sail their own boats fast rather than try and vocalize at high volume to other teams they felt were in the wrong. In the final race it took some time and the decision hung on whether Xiamen Fei Peng had come below 90 degrees to the wind before hailing Sea Wolves and the umpires knew they had to be sure, It was the decision of all the umpires, shortly afterwards confirmed by video replay, that Fei Peng had correctly cleared their penalty and Sea Wolves had incurred a penalty. The race, and therefore the Championship, was awarded to Xiamen Fei Peng. Incidentally it was the first time in its 6 year history that the victorious team had ladies on board. It is quite incredible how far this event has come in the 4 short years I have been involved in it, either covering the event or involved as an official. In your writer's humble opinion this is the number one event in China when it comes to helping to develop the true sport of sailing n China. -- Alistair Skinner 12ft Skiff Vantage Real Estate Upper Harbour Championship While D Unit (Adam Forbes/Richard Johns) was quickest off the start line after two general recalls due to a big tide, Garde got away reasonably well and had a blinder to establish a lead up the first work of the long easterly course on the upper part of Sydney Harbour. Hobson and Johnson were never threatened after that that and came home in fast fashion to claim the Championship. The Lincoln Crowne crew of Jonathan Temple/Richard Jones were second overall, while Michael Spies/Damien Vlotman sailed Andrew Short Marine to third place in what Spies described as "a light and shifty race," with a predominantly 6-7 knot north-easterly breeze testing all crews. Reigning Interdominion champions, Nick Press and Brad Yabsley (Dimension Polyant) finished fourth overall and will be on the start line to defend their title in January. Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club is hosting the 51st Interdominions, to be held from 6-15 January 2011, with the co-operation of Hunters Hill Sailing Club, which is generously loaning its facilities for the event. Some famous names have won the Interdominions, including Aussies Dave Porter, John Winning and Iain Murray, and Kiwis John Chapple (three times) and Bruce Farr (the noted yacht designer). Included in the Interdominion Championship week will be a 12ft skiff reunion to be hosted by Lane Cove 12ft SSC on Friday January7 at the Hunters Hill Sailing Club, following on from the first successful reunion hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron last year.
