Australia's Torvar Mirsky 5-0 in Argo Group Gold Cup
Mirsky has one more flight to sail today, and that against Great Britain's Ian Williams, Gold Cup champ in 2006, and one of his his nearest competitor in Group 3. Now at 4-1, Williams can tie Mirsky at 5 wins and 1 loss. Also at 4-1 starting the day is Jonnie Berntsson from Sweden winner the King Edward VII Gold Cup in 2008.
He faces Alvaro Marinho now 3-2. If Berntssen wins, he is also at 5-1. Two of the top four will automatically move up to the quarters and two will move into the repechage round-robin later in the day for a second chance to be in the quarter-finals.
Over in Group 1, Gold Cup and World Match Race Tour newcomer, Taylor Canfield started Tuesday at 2-1. The US Virgin Islander sailed unbeaten to end the day at the top of his group at 5-1. Jesper Radich of Denmark shares the top spot with an identical 5-1 score. Radich also started yesterday at 2-1. They will move into the quarter-finals on the 5 wins they have now.
Group 1 Kiwi Phil Robertson finished yesterday with a 3-3 score and can move on with the second chance crowd on a win today. Robertson faces Tour veteran Bjorn Hansen who at 2-4 can play the spoiler. With a win over Robertson he will put the decision into a tiebreaker. Mike Buckley, Lucy Macgregor and Terry Mclaughlin all have 2-4 scores like Hansen.
Tour points leader Mathieu Richard, who had such a disappointing performance, losing two matches on Tuesday, came back to finish through Flight 6 at 3 wins and 3 losses. Building on his bad luck yesterday, Richard was accessed a 1/2 point penalty in his match with Taylor Canfield for causing boat damage in a collision in a penalty maneuver that earned a black flag. His score moved down to 2 1/2 wins. If Richard, can win the final qualifying flight today, he has a mathematical chance to make the repechage and get another chance another chance at moving into the Quarters.
Group 2 is just as tight. Reigning Tour Champion and 2009 Argo Group Gold Cup runner-up Adam Minoprio from New Zealand, 2009 Argo Group Gold Cup semi-finalist Eric Monnin and Kiwi Reuben Corbett all have 4-1 records.
The top two teams in each group following Flight 7 today will move automatically into the quarter-finals tomorrow, They will have the afternoon off while the 3rd and 4th place finishers get their second chance to make the quarters,
Staying Inside The Green Budget
Staying within their target points budget for the day's two races, the 2008 champions' fourth and first was joint best score of the day, and leaves them three points clear of 2007 title holder Artemis, whose day was the mirror image of Quantum Racing's.
The start of the second race of the day proved the most telling, as Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis (SWE) jumped off the line to an early lead which they extended to nearly one minute, whilst overnight leader Synergy (RUS) made their poorest start of the regatta so far and had to work hard to recover to a seventh.
The America's Cup waters off Valencia have so far spoiled the TP52 championship crews for choice.
Monday's building sea-breeze was replaced by an altogether more benign, but equally testing 7-8 knots of thermal SE'ly today, and Thursday's scheduled 25 miles coastal race is presently expecting at least 20 knots, maybe more.
That the sun has not stopped shining, boosting the daytime temperatures into the mid 20's Celsius only is the double bonus payout.
Tomorrow's 25 miles coastal race will be a variation on a traditional Olympic triangle type course, with an opening two miles beat followed by a four miles downwind leg.
* A good start to the Championship for Artemis today with a 3, 5, 2. We had to wait for a while this morning for the Southeasterly seabreeze to fill in but when it came in, it built nicely up to 17 knots in the second and third races.
The race course just North of the America's Cup Harbor was pretty open with no one side being favored. Artemis helmsman Torbjorn Tornqvist, working with bowman Andy Fethers, got us three good starts and that certainly helps.
The Russian team of Synergy had the best day winning two of the races and Quantum had the second best day with a win in the first race.
Matador is right there too. The points are very tight as usual in this fleet at this early stage. Tomorrow is forecast to be a Northeast gradient wind which will make the water a bit choppy. -- Paul Cayard
Internet Team Germany Out Of America's Cup
In summary, despite a starting budget (20 million Euros) they pulled out for two main reasons: the considerable existing advantage of the Americans, and much too high costs.
Basically, Team Germany was well set up with gear for a monohull challenge, and had 20 million Euros start-up from 1&1 towards the next event (1&1 being keen to get exposure at events in Europe), but they calculated that they had to write off their existing boats and seek another 30-40 million Euros for a viable challenge. They had organised cooperation for monohull keelboat sailing with Udo Schuetz (Team Container).

Alinghi To Attempt Ruban Bleu Record
Alinghi has not attempted the Ruban Bleu before, although both Pierre-Yves Jorand and Christian Wahl have. Jorand was a record holder in 1993 with the multi-hull Poseidon, setting the record at just over five hours.

In an intense season, the groups that were generally left behind have gotten exhausted at the trail of the leading groups. Their budgets are either non-existent or very little. They only just managed to make it to the race after a very limited peirod of training and preparation. For a lot of them, this is in fact "a learning experience." Mostly, they wish to build up their efforts and earn the chance of getting on the podium one day.
They are aware that before offshore racers get to enjoy their victories, this is what they have to go through. After all, if there is no one following at the back, can there be any point to racing?

RORC Caribbean 600: Online Entry Now Open
"This race is firmly on the calendar for those boats who enjoy offshore racing," said Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) Chief Executive, Eddie Warden Owen. "Many boats are using the ARC race, which starts in November, as a way of crossing the Atlantic to be able to participate in the RORC Caribbean 600 which starts on February 21st in Antigua".
One of those boats doing the ARC and the RORC Caribbean 600 is the brand new Swan 80 Berenice, owned by Marco Rodolfi from Italy. Marco had heard a lot about the RORC Caribbean 600 in Italy and decided to race across the Atlantic for the experience and as a way of getting to know his new boat.
Another Italian entry is Danilo Salsi in his Swan 90, DSK Pioneer Investments who will take part in the race for the third time.
Yachts from nine nations are currently listed and one boat hails from Lithuania. Simonas Steponavicius' Volvo 60, Ambersail who recently won her class in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race and came very close to winning overall. The team are on their way around the world and are participating in the classic ocean races as they go along. The RORC Caribbean 600 is one they had to do.
An increasing number of boats are from charter companies who are selling places to both individuals and teams who want some winter sunshine and exciting sailing. Ondeck are one of the larger organisations who will have three Farr 65's available for charter, plus an all carbon fibre Santa Cruz 37 and three Beneteau 40.7's: "There is a lot of interest in chartering yachts for the 2011 race," said Simon Hedley of Ondeck. "The warm Caribbean in winter is very appealing for those who like offshore racing and chartering is a good option for those who cannot afford to ship their boats across."
Interest is also growing from the super yachts who winter in the Caribbean. The 46m Hyperion, the 122' Luca Brenta designed Ghost and Peter Harrison's Farr 115 Sojana have all expressed an interest in participating in the Caribbean 600 and as word spreads, it is likely that entries from these boats will increase.

Spanish Teams Lead J/80 Worlds
With breezes on the course area in the 60-75 degree direction blowing 15-25 knots and ginormous waves with cross-chop from the east, everyone knew they were going to be in for a serious, physically demanding day. As they have in the previous three J/80 Worlds, the Spanish teams put on a text-book show of how to sail at least as fast as everyone else upwind, but simply "blow doors" off everyone else downwind. Often sailing upwards of 2-3 knots faster at times than their rivals flying downwind over and under other boats in front of them as if they were pylons in an obstacle course. It was a "schooling" like no one can imagine.
Leading the standings are top two Spanish teams, former J/80 World Champion, Jose Maria Torcida on ECC VIVIENDAS, leading with a 5-3-2 score for ten points and Carlos Martinez (current J/80 European Champion) skippering PERALEJA GOLF in second with a 2-2-9 for thirteen points. While they may not have had strong first beats, their two downwind legs and second beats enabled them to grind down the competition in front of them to post very consistent scores.
The top five are all within nine points of each other. Filling out the top five are the top Americans with QUANTUM RACING team comprised of Scott Young and Terry Flynn in third with an 8-5-1 tally for fourteen points, just four points off the leader. Fourth is Jay Lutz and Gary Kamins racing FIRED UP with the "devils numbers" as their score- 6-6-6 for eighteen points! Lying fifth is current J/80 North American Champion John Storck Jr with an 11-4-4 for nineteen points.
ISAF 2014 Worlds Preliminary Bid Deadline - 15 October
The ISAF Sailing World Championships brings together the World Championships of all the events included in the Olympic Sailing Competition.
Cities who are interested in bidding to host the 2014 ISAF Worlds must submit their preliminary bid to the ISAF Secretariat not later than 14:00 UTC on 15 October 2010. Preliminary bids must be sent by email to Alastair Fox and two hard copies should be posted to the ISAF Secretariat. All bids received will be acknowledged.
ISAF will not accept bids received after 15 October and all bid cities must submit a preliminary bid.
All preliminary bids should include the information detailed in Appendix 2 of the Bid Guidelines and include the support of the relevant Member National Authority.
The preliminary bids will not be judged by ISAF. This is an important stage in the bid process so that ISAF is able to communicate with cities who have a confirmed interest in hosting the ISAF Sailing World Championships. All preliminary bids will be treated as confidential.
Following the 2010 ISAF Annual Conference, ISAF will issue an update to all cities who submit a preliminary bid regarding any changes to the ISAF Regulations or policies.
2014 ISAF Worlds Bid Guidelines:
New Build TP52 Ran will compete on 2011 Audi Medcup Circuit
Niklas and Catherine Zennstrom's (SWE) Ran (GBR) sailing team, winners of the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race and current MiniMaxi class world champions and class winners in the last Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race, have decided to make the 'next logical step' for them, to race next year's Audi MedCup Circuit with a boat which starts building imminently at Green Marine in Lymington, England.
Their successful project is run by Tim Powell, who skippers Ran, and has many years experience of the MedCup Circuit as longtime co-helmsman/strategist on Cristabella (GBR).
Zennstrom, co-founder of Skype, will steer the boat. He has been a passionate owner-driver since returning to sailing as a boat owner in 2007, and in 2008 campaigned Ran, an IRC optimised TP52 (the former Patches) in a hot IRC TP52 fleet of six boats in UK and Irish waters.
That TP52 was the precursor to a more wide-ranging and successful international programme with their IRC Judel/Vrolijk 72 footer, which has included all of the ocean racing 'classics'.
The boat build will be project managed in England by Chris Hosking, whose TP52 track record includes three Artemis TP52's, including the 2007 MedCup champion, and the 2006 Vrolijk designed TP52 Illbruck.
The schedule is for the new Ran - which is named after the Norse goddess of the sea - to be launched in April on time to compete at Palma Vela next spring.
Zennstrom and his team will also continue to compete globally with their 72 footer, and honing their one-design skills on the Solent with a Farr 45.
RANI has been the winner, or runner up, in various regattas, including first over the line in the racing division in 2005 ARC and second overall on handicap. She has sailed the 2008 Palma-Vela and did well.
Summer 2008 the owner enjoyed a family cruise on board, visiting Sardinia and France - the yacht then returned to Palma. April 2009 the yacht has had her new spring service and antifouling for the season. Summer 2009 cruising Italy. Winter 2009-10 in Montenegro. Summer 2010 she will cruise Adriatic area.
RANI is maintained to a high standard and in the past few years there have been many upgrades and improvements made.
