Eat Sleep J Repeat & Soak Racing Crowned in Tor Bay
Two races were held on the final day of the Darwin Escapes 2019 J/70 World Championships, 12 knots from the southwest provided a true wind for the start of racing but that moderate breeze shifted and built west to 20 knots, gusting 26, to produce a fantastic finale. A memorable world championship for both Open and Corinthian Classes was decided in the very last race.
Paul Ward's Eat Sleep J Repeat has become the first British team to win the Open J/70 World Championship, holding off a strong challenge from Joel Ronning (USA) racing Catapult, Pichu Torcida (ESP) racing Noticia, and Alberto Rossi (ITA) racing Enfant Terrible. Claudia Rossi (ITA) racing Petite Terrible, was fourth and best Open Woman Helm in the championship.
Soak Racing won the J/70 Corinthian World Championship in dramatic style. In the last race, Soak Racing was four places ahead of Doug Struth (GBR) racing DSP. A tie on points for the series was settled by countback, a single place after 14 races gave Soak Racing victory. Denis Cherevatenko (RUS) racing Joyfull was third. Fiona Hampshire (GBR) racing Elizabeth was best Corinthian Woman Helm in the championship.
The Royal Torbay Yacht Club and their dedicated volunteer support were roundly applauded by all of the J/70 sailors for producing a fantastic regatta. Stuart Childerley and the Race Management team received huge applause for providing high quality race courses in tricky conditions.

Victory for Cannonball at Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

On his third attempt, Dario Ferrari and his Maxi 72 Cannonball, deservedly won the Mini Maxi Racer 1 class at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
Ferrari and his Italian team scored a come-from-behind victory after Jim Swartz's Vesper led on day one and Sir Peter Ogden's Jethou also claimed two races along the way. The slippery Cannonball also won two races and her consistent scoreline, with no finish off the podium, resulted in her winning the title by three points.
Also significant today, sailing a coastal course that took the fleets off on an anti-clockwise lap of La Maddalena, including a long run down Bomb Alley, was the victory for the new Maxi 72 Bella Mente of American Hap Fauth, which, along with Peter Harrison's Sorcha, got off to an excellent start and then never looked back.
It was the Wallys turn to sail windward-leewards. Going into today it was very close between Lyra and David M. Leuschen's Wallycento Galateia. Ultimately Lyra won both today's races, successfully defending her title by three points.
Hanging onto the Mini Maxi Racer-Cruiser class win - just - was Bostonian Stephen Cucchiaro's Swan 601 Flow.
There was further upset today among the Mini Maxi Cruiser-Racers where Riccardo de Michele's Vallicelli 80 H20 won her second consecutive race today to draw level on points with Marietta Strasoldo's Swan 651 Lunz Am Meer, that had been winning all week. With three bullets this week to Lunz am Meer's one, H20 won on countback, to claim her third successive victory in the Cruiser-Racer class at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Great British Sailing Challenge Final
After a series of qualifying events around the country, the Grand Final of the Great British Sailing Challenge is set to take place at the end of this month at Rutland Sailing Club. The weekend of 28/29 September will bring together some of the best-known names in small-boat racing to take part in this inaugural event. It's going to be a celebration of the diversity of handicap racing in the UK.
Love it or loathe it, handicap racing is here to stay, thanks to the huge diversity of classes that are raced across the country. The past decade has seen the growth of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series into one of the most established and successful circuits of the annual calendar. This has been the first year of the Great British Sailing Challenge, a series of open events that culminates in the Grand Final, for which many sailors from many different classes have competed in order to qualify for the Finals. However, there are still places available for certain classes, as the aim is to represent as broad a cross-section of small-boat racing as possible.
Current names include Maria Stanley, first ever female winning helm at the RS200 Nationals; Emily Mueller, 2018 Optimist National Champion; Penny and Russ Clark who have burst to the top of the international scene in their first season racing the 505; Simon Horsfield and Katie Burridge, 2000 National Champions and winners of last season's Selden SailJuice Winter Series.
The event will also incorporate the Y&Y Battle of the Classes, so to make sure your class is represented, Class Associations should contact Simon Lovesey:
Results will be scored using the Great Lakes version of the PY handicap numbers, and other prizes will be awarded based on performance measured by the SailRacer trackers.
More than 750 sailors have competed in the qualifying events during the season, and now it all comes down to the Final at Rutland.

Phosphorus II wins RORC Cherbourg Race
Mark Emerson's A13 Phosphorus II is the overall winner of the 2019 RORC Cherbourg Race, having scored the best corrected time under IRC. Class Winners under IRC: Venomous (IRC0), Phosphorus II (IRC1), Sunrise (IRC2), Raging-bee2 (IRC3& IRC Two-Handed), and Foggy Dew (IRC4).
64 entries in the RORC Cherbourg Race enjoyed a beautiful sunset, hiking out for a beat up the Solent, before cracking sheets for a night race to Cherbourg at high speed under a waxing moon. A spinnaker reach in 10-15 knots of westerly breeze produced a fast ride across the English Channel. As the majority of the fleet approached the finish, the breeze veered north, creating a tactical finale of gybing to stay at the optimal angle and in the best pressure.
Ross Hobson's Seacart 30 Buzz was the first to finish taking Multihull Line Honours in a rapid 6 hours 24 mins 38 secs. Joerg Riechers' Class40 Imagine took Monohull Line Honours in 7 hours 1 mins 26 seconds, just over two minutes ahead of Ian Hoddle's Manic.
In IRC One, Phosphorus II was the winner, James Neville's FAST40+ Ino XXX was second and first to finish under IRC. Colin Campbell's Azuree 46 Eclectic was third in class. In IRC Two, Thomas Kneen's JPK 11.80 Sunrise won by just 17 seconds on corrected time from Pascal Tuffier's team racing Figaro II Tuf...tuf...tuf. Gery Trentesaux's JPK 11.80 Courrier Recommande was third by just 27 seconds after IRC time correction.
In IRC Three, Louis-Marie Dussere's JPK 10.80 Raging-bee2 put in the best performance winning the class and IRC Two-handed into their home port of Cherbourg. Erik van Vuuren's W36 Hubo was second. Sun Fast 3600 Bellino sailed by Rob Craigie & Deb Fish was third. Nick Martin's Sun Fast 3600 Diablo was fourth, meaning the top four teams in the class were all Two-Handed. In IRC Two-Handed Raging-bee2 was the winner, Nigel & Tim Goodhew's Sunfast 3200 Cora was second, and W36 Hubo was third.
Noel Racine's JPK 10.10 Foggy Dew was the winner of IRC Four, scoring their fourth class win of the season. Cora was second and Emmanuel Pinteaux's JPK 10.10 Gioia, sailed by son Etienne was third. The final race of the 2019 RORC Season's Points Championship will be the 40th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race starting in the Grand Harbour, Malta on 19th October. -- Louay Habib
The Clipper Race: Thrill ride conditions as Ocean Sprint gets underway
The eleven Clipper Race teams enjoyed a real thrill-ride during the fifth day of racing as they zoomed through the start of the Ocean Sprint. Wind speeds of over 40 knots with a swell of over four meters made for some of the most exhilarating downwind conditions that the professional skippers, and their non-professional crews, have faced.
The speedy conditions are likely to provide some very close Ocean Sprint results once all times have been collected by the Race Office. The Ocean Sprint is a time trial between two lines of longitude or two lines of latitude. The fastest three teams gain extra race points (three for first, two for second and one for third).
The fastest boat speed reported back in the Skipper Blogs this morning is from Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam.
Melges 20 Russia Cup
Malcesine, Italy: The 2019 edition of the Russian Cup ended today on the race course of Malcesine: the event worked as the prologue to the week dedicated to the European Championship of the Melges 20 fleet.
The only race of today, completed in almost winter weather conditions, brings changes in the general ranking: Igor Rytov's Russian Bogatyrs grabs a precious second place in the race won by compatriot Pirogovo and, at the same time, obtains the final victory in the Russian Cup confirming the title also won last year in Cagliari.
Thus, Igor Rytov's team adds another pearl to its now endless collection of successes, all obtained in a season that has seen this Russian crew dominate the European series of the Melges World League and still hold the number 1 in the world ranking.
Russian Bogatyrs arrives at the start of the much expected Melges 20 European Championship as the boat to beat: in Malcesine they will have to try to defend also the continental title won two years ago on the race course of Šibenik.

Who really is the Team New Zealand skipper?
Peter Burling appears to be the main man but Team New Zealand are yet to announce a formal skipper for the defence of their America's Cup defence.
The syndicate launched their new boat on Friday and will now go into serious testing of the radical 75-foot foiling monohull with an eye on the opening World Series event in Italy next April.
Glenn Ashby skippered the last campaign in Bermuda in 2017 where Team New Zealand won back the Auld Mug with Burling on the wheel.
Both are key components for the defence in Auckland 2021 and the team appear content to operate with a collective leadership through this crucial buildup phase. -- Duncan Johnstone
Flying Fifteen World Championship
Dun Laoghaire, Ireland: The forecast for day 3 of the Subaru Flying Fifteen World Championship was for very light airs all day but by the time competitors started to arrive at the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday morning, a faint breeze wafted around Dublin Bay tempting PRO Jack Roy to send the fleet of 75 Flying Fifteens out for two more races.
After 5 races have been completed the first discard comes into play leaving Gra-ham Vials and Chris Turner in pole position with 9 points net. In second overall is fellow Brits Nathan Batchelor and Ricky Rigg (15 points) meaning the two Ovington Boats representatives sit in 1/2 overall. Andy McKee and Richard Jones are in 3rd overall on 20 points. The first boat to break the British stranglehold is Mike Hart / Dean McAullay (AUS) in 6th overall.
Two local Irish boats remain in 14th and 15th respectively, Ian Mathews / Keith Poole and David Gorman / Chris Doorly both of host club The National YC)
The current New Zealand Flying Fifteen champions Hayden Percy and Scott Pedersen from Napier, sailing a chartered boat, continue to collect very credible top 20 finishes, they scored 20 / 17 to sit in 16th overall. Another long distance traveller, Campbell Alexander and Dave Herridge from Natal YC in Durban, South Africa also continue to put in some very worthy performances finishing 18 and 19 for the day which places them in 17th overall. -- Jonny Fullerton
The Fife Regatta returns in 2020
Originating in 1998, The Fife Regatta now invites the prestigious Fife designed classic yachts back to their birthplace in Fairlie on the Clyde, Scotland.
