Provezza claim consecutive Dragon World Titles
Andy Beadsworth, Ali Tezdiker and Simon Fry crossed the finish line in first place to win the final race of the 2019 Dragon World Championship and seal their second consecutive world title in style.
The Turkish team were the first to arrive in Fremantle to spend nearly a month two boat training with Peter Gilmour's Yanmar Racing Team. Their professionalism and dedication is testament to their success on the water. They did however have to work hard to ground out the victory which was on-ly decided by the very last race.
The final race was held in superb Fremantle conditions, picture postcard blue skies and a moderate 12 - 13 knot S/SW breeze. The start under U flag was clear with none of the leaders prepared to push the envelope.
By the final gate rounding as the late afternoon breeze begun to fade, all Andy Beadsworth and his crew needed to do was to cover Pieter Heerema to the finish line to claim his fourth bullet of the championship and the world title.
Behind them the battle was still on for second and third overall. Dmitry Samokhin steered Rocknrolla to third in the final race. Grant Gordon crossed fourth one place ahead of Klaus Diederichs to claim second overall. Klaus and his crew finished fifth to claim the third step on the podium.
Peter Gimour and his team of Sam Gilmour and Yasuhiro Yaji sailing Yanmar Racing finished sixth to end the regatta in a well deserved fourth overall. Pieter Heerema finished fifth overall 3 points ahead of Anatoly Logi-nov in Annapurna. The effervescent Dutch girls with Pedro Andrade finished their regatta in a very impressive seventh place overall. The Olinghi team have lit up the regatta with their youth, enthusiasm and colour and out per-formed many of the high caiber teams sailing at these Worlds.
In the battle for the Corinthian and Masters titles, Nick Rogers and his crew Leigh Behrens and Simon Burrows. have raced a very consistent regatta to finish in 10th overall and capture both titles. Close behind all week long has been local Royal Freshwater Bay YC sailors Andrew Foulkes, Andrew Ben-nett and Matthew Stafford.

America's Cup: Luna Rossa base construction starts Monday
Hobson Wharf extension work will start from next week - beginning 14 January - along with dredging. The Hobson Wharf extension is the proposed site for the base for America's Cup Challenger of Record Circolo della Vela Sicilia and their team Luna Rossa. The other five challengers will be located on Wynyard Point, on which work commenced in November 2018.
Dredging of the approach channel to the outer Viaduct Harbour will start next week. Barges will then be used to move the dredged material for disposal. We have been through a lengthy exercise to determine how best to dispose of the material. The Environmental Protection Agency have certified and approved a specific amount of dredge for offshore disposal, to be done under an existing disposal permit. The remaining material that cannot be disposed of offshore will be stabilised (turned into mudcrete) on land and transported to a certified disposal location.
The Hobson Wharf extension work starts from week beginning 14 January and is part of the "heavy lifting" for the 2021 America's Cup, which will create area for six new team bases. One base "B" will be on Hobson Wharf, the other five Challengers will be housed in a mix of single and double base locations on Wynyard Point. Moderate and Mild forecast for the GJW Direct Bloody Mary
As it's name implies, the Bloody Mary can be a bruising affair. It's normally blisteringly cold, sometimes below freezing. So if you fancy a crack at this winter classic, this Saturday is the time to head to west London while the weather is reasonably kind. Sponsored for the first time by GJW Direct, the classic pursuit race looks set for pretty mild conditions in moderate to fresh westerly breezes.
Entries have been high for this season's Selden SailJuice Winter Series, and already there are nearly 200 entries for round 5, the GJW Direct Bloody Mary. There is the usual roll-call of legends such as Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane who won this race with about 20 minutes to spare in an International 14 a few years back. However, that was before the Great Lakes variation on the standard RYA handicap numbers were introduced, and this weekend should produce a much tighter battle for line honours, where the outcome will most likely remain in the balance until the dying minutes of the race.
There is a huge range of classes represented, with the Flying Dutchman making a rare appearance thanks to Ian Keely and John Matthews from Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club. The biggest class by number is currently the RS Aero 7 singlehander, with Mr Selden himself, Steve Norbury, among the strong Aero line-up.

Irish Mid-Winter Provides Halcyon Days for Ilen's Historic Square-Sail

In ancient Greece, the Halcyon Days were a mythological seven day period of calm clear weather at the mid-winter Solstice writes W M Nixon. Down Limerick way, they've been making the best of the Halcyon Days, with the blue River Shannon ruffled only by the gentlest of breezes for several days now, while the sun has shone on the Ted Russell Dock where the restored 56ft 1926-built gaff ketch Ilen has seen continuing work by the Ilen Project team.
Various tasks have been ongoing to have her ready for the 2019 season, which will include a round Ireland voyage with a significant visit to Dun Laoghaire. And since Ilen returned to Limerick at the beginning of October, she has been much-visited by a wide range of people including President Michael D Higgins and groups of schoolchildren taking part in the interactive educational projects linked to the historic ship.
But while she is so important historically, the Ilen nevertheless has to project an attractive persona, and one of the useful things about the holiday period is that it provided opportunities to see the re-born Ilen at leisure, with the "small tall ship" in an uncrowded state. It is then that her true spirit shines through, and you appreciate why Project Leader Gary MacMahon chose the special colour schemes he did. For as one visitor seeing the ship for the first time commented: "The Ilen looks so jaunty – she cheers everyone up".

10th Monaco Optimist Team Race kicks-off today
16 teams, 16 nations totalling 64 sailors under-14 have descended on the Principality for the 10th Monaco Optimist Team Race (10-13 January), organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco with the support of FxPro, Eventica, Fon and Peace and Sport.
This original match race format in teams of four Optimists encourages team-work and has proved extremely popular over the years, with clubs from all over the world vying to participate.
This year, alongside youngsters from the Royal Cape Yacht Club (South Africa) and Yacht Club Punta del Este (Uruguay), YCM is hosting a Chinese team from the Visun Royal Yacht Club, a La Belle Classe Destinations member, here to compete for the very first time in a European regatta.
The Monaco Club has already organised two training days for teams to brush-up on their match racing skills ahead of the regatta.
It promises to be a very competitive event. The Finnish team from Helsingfors Segelklubb HSK are back, determined to take the title for a second time, but may have to face the redoubtable Swedes from the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, current European Champions in the discipline.
"The event is part of our Club's youth training policy and includes a much appreciated daily briefing by Chris Atkins for all competitors. We want them all to be able to improve together and have access to the same level of training. Passing on skills is embedded in the YCM's DNA," explains Sports Section Manager, Paolo Ghione.
It is also a great opportunity for contestants to meet others of their age from different cultures and backgrounds who are equally passionate about sailing.
Ronstan Australian Finn Championship
Dutch rivals for Tokyo 2020 qualification, Nicholas Heiner and Pieter-Jan Postma, won a race each on the second day of the Ronstan Australian Finn Championship at Black Rock YC. British Olympic champion, Giles Scott, still leads overall from Heiner, with Andy Maloney from New Zealand, moving up third after a perfect Port Phillip 20 knot sea breeze day.
Although the sea breeze didn't build to the proportions of Tuesday, it was solid all day. The day started with overcast skies and a strong southerly wind at 20 to 25 knots. The forecast was south to south-westerly at 15 to 20 knots, but a number of the fleet were wary as all the indications were the sea breeze would come over the top of the gradient at a similar strength to Tuesday.
The fleet was sent out on time for a 1300 start in a 15-knot southerly. There were no sail changes today as everyone had their heavy air gear on the boom.
At the bar after the race, there was a presentation for the first two days. Young Josh, a RIB crew, went in the water three times, including looking for Postma in his upturned hull. Rafa Trujillo was awarded a BRYC cap for his rescue work, including today when he swam and righted an upturned boat. Mike Flavell, a crew on course boat had his first ever sail in a Finn in 25+ knots... before one of the coach boats and young guys could take over and take the boat to the harbour.
Finally Australian Finn class Life Member, John Shallvey, stuck it out for two races after some coaching advice from Trujillo, "don't catch any waves, don't go fast down wind, safety first", and sure enough, he finished both races on his birthday and is in the mix for the Grand Grand Master.
Racing at Black Rock continues until Saturday with two races scheduled each day to complete a 10 race series.

Cowes Spring Classics returns for second year
Following on from the success of the inaugural regatta in 2018 which saw 24 boats attending, organisers are delighted to announce that entry to the next edition of the Cowes Spring Classics is now open. Taking place taking place over the weekend of 17 – 19 May, organisers Mary Scott-Jackson of MSJ Events and Martin Nott, a wooden boat builder, are expecting even more participating yachts in 2019 with interested owners already sending their entries in.
The racing is once again being organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the regatta will be based at Shepards Marina, using the historic Sugar Store as its social hub. Entries are encouraged from Cruisers and Cruiser racers, Gaff Rigged yachts and Pilot Cutters, Day Boats and Raters, Classic Metre yachts, affordable Classic Cruisers plus modern Spirit of Tradition yachts.

Irish Sailing Seeks Funding to Support Team Racing Strategy
Irish Sailing is putting together a funding application to support Irish Sailing's Team Racing strategy and is seeking quotes for a contractor to develop the programme starting late Spring of 2019 with a tight timeline for the funding application.
Irish Sailing is seeking quotes from self-employed contractors, for a one-year, full time, initial contract as Irish Sailing's Team Racing Development Officer.
The primary role of the TRDO is to develop Team Racing across Irish Sailing organisations for the purpose of increasing membership activity, retaining keen sailors, and increasing participation. The successful candidate may be based anywhere in Ireland and will work in conjunction with the existing development officers, policy groups and Irish Team Racing Association to support Irish Sailing affiliated Clubs, Classes and accredited Training Centres to grow and develop their team racing activities.
Initially, the funding being applied for is for a one year contract for the 2019 season, which may be extended if the programme is successful.
In the event of a successful funding application, a formal selection process will be initiated during the middle of March, with a view to starting April 2019.
The timeline for funding application is tight. Please send a letter of application and CV, along with a quote for a daily rate being sought for the role to Harry Hermon, Chief Executive by email to; before close of business on Friday 18th January.
