After a very modest eighth in the first race the Kiwi champions bounced back to a second and then won the breezy third race to finish the day sharing the same points aggregate as the Franco-German Audi A1 powered by ALL4ONE (FRA/GER) but leading on countback. For the Kiwi champions, who won here in July last year, that slender lead is only an early, passing bonus - a reflection of their strength and ability. The real satisfaction came as they added another eight points to their Circuit lead over Quantum Racing whose 9,3,7 for the day underlined just how testing the conditions were. While the start saw only 6-7 knots of late afternoon breeze, it swung hard left and built left flank of the first beat, new breeze piping up to more than 20 knots. The gentle breeze was replaced suddenly by marching white horses and full power conditions, still peppered with big swings in direction on different parts of the course as the residual breeze clung to the right of the track. Emirates Team New Zealand were able to keep the advances of Matador (ARG) in check at the approach to the second windward mark, when the wind seemed to bang back right, towards the original direction, leaving all three leading boats fast reaching into the final turn, well above the starboard lay line. But the Argentine flagged Matador, with their 2,8,2 for the day lie third, only one point behind the kiwis and Audi A1 powered by ALL4ONE. 52 Series GP42's Poised to Pounce
But the series leader, led by skipper Jose Maria van der Ploeg (ESP) and driven by helmsman Paolo Cian (ITA) closed to within less than a boat length at the second top mark, poised to pounce on the Italian team driven by owner/driver Roberto Monti (ITA). And according to Madrid-Caser owner Javier Goizueta (ESP), it was just two waves and a little wind to push them into the lead. "We were just alongside them, and we got lucky: just a little puff came through to us first, and then a couple of waves for us to surge ahead into the lead." Cian, however, was more analytical, saying they were just faster downwind as they tested a new Code 2+ spinnaker and found that their 2009 Code 2 spinnaker was faster in these conditions. "This is why the practice race is so valuable," said Cian, "because it gives us a chance to do some testing of new sails and know the exact conditions they are fast. Master of Ceremonies Gary Jobson brought Cup legends Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Russell Coutts and Malin Burnham to the stage to introduce the inductees, share anecdotes, and discuss the importance of the America's Cup Hall of Fame. New Zealand broadcaster PJ Montgomery, renowned for his America's Cup coverage, recounted the careers of Daubney, Fleury, Jones and Phipps. The ceremonies also included film highlights of the careers of the inductees, and after the guests raised glasses of Moet to toast them, each was presented with a custom-made barometer by Maximum Instruments. "I came up with this idea that it would be a good idea to go up to the jumpers or well up the mast and have a look for the breeze," said Jones recalling his first America's Cup experience in 1995. "The last 15 years, I've regretted having come up with that idea, although sometimes it's actually quite nice to get off the deck and away from these guys." Acknowledging what an honor it was for him to be there, Daubney made some of the most humorous and touching remarks of the evening. "I was lucky I was around at the very end of 12 Metre sailing and I got to sail with wire sheets and bolt cutters. Kids today they just don't get to do that stuff. The good thing for sailing in the America's Cup, for a person like me who is uneducated, is you get to sail and work with a lot of really smart people. And it's true. I hear people laughing [in the audience]. I made a career out of just pulling the jib onto the top spreader. I spent my whole career just looking at the thing. And then you sit around with people from the fields of Formula One and scientists, people who paid attention in school, and they ask 'what do you think' and I'm like 'what do you mean, what do I think?' " Herreshoff explained that there needed to be an organization to bridge the gap between Cup campaigns, and that the genesis for the Hall of Fame took place on a foggy night after sailing during a conversation about relationships, careers, and the privilege of being involved in the Cup. "So for me it's a thrill to be one of those inducted. It is very special to me and I thank the selection committee." Outstanding Senior Structural Engineer? As the country flags flew atop New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court, the sailors from 14 nations did not seem at all drained from their day of practice in the fleet of Sonars, rather, they were refreshed and ready for what is set to be one of the most competitive match racing worlds yet. Tuesday starts five days of intense racing that will include a round robin series leading up to a possible quarter finals, semi finals and finals series. In years past, there was a disparity between the top ranked teams and the bottom of the quarterfinalists in a championship. This year, the competitors are preparing for a nose-to-nose battle all the way through. Starting at 0830 on Thursday 16 September it was always going to be a tough day whatever the conditions so a force 4 wind from the West promised to test the fleet's sailing skills to the limit. The first entry to complete the challenge was the RAF comprising of Simon Kent, Ginge Ashmore, Mark Richards and Stu Tillbury. Next to arrive was the first pair of solo windsurfers, the RN pair Gerry Northwood and Steve Roberts. An incredible effort and the difference in appearance of those that had completed the whole trip was clear to see. Next in was the Army pair Gareth Baker and Steve Williams who arrived as dusk was giving way to darkness, which left Jon Metcalfe as the only remaining complete navigator. He was accompanied to the finish with the final member of the Army team of Ian Beaton, Dan Scudder and Rob Hickley - completing this great challenge roughly 14 hours after it had begun, and in total darkness! A welcome drink was enjoyed by all on the beach. Twenty windsurfers set out on the challenge, 13 finished with 5 completing the whole trip. A tremendous achievement which, added to the charitable donations, should be a great source of pride for all involved. The support that was provided by the RIB owners, drivers and support crew was equally impressive with one boat (Poole Sea Safaris) coming from Poole at 0530 and then returning back to Poole long after dark. Details on how to donate and attend the FWC Evening are on the website: Camet Code Zip Performance Shirt For more information please see Ten Teams Enter the TP52 World Championship Alberto Roemmers' crew on Matador (ARG) will be seeking to defend the world title that they won last year in Palma, Mallorca. But they will face tough competition from a fleet which includes past world championship winning owners or skippers, Quantum Racing (USA) - which completed the double in 2008, winning both the Audi MedCup title and the worlds - and Swedish owner Torbjorn Tornqvist who steered his Artemis (SWE) crew to both titles in 2007. Two British teams, which are not Audi MedCup regulars, Jonny Vincent's Pace (ex RAN/2007 Patches) and Tony Langley's Weapon of Choice (ex 2008 Matador), join the World Championships fleet. While Weapon of Choice enjoyed racing at the Palma Worlds last year, this is Vincent's first season with the Reichel Pugh designed former Patches. There are several teams that are still considering taking part in this battle for the TP52 world crown, which keeps the entry list still open. "There are potential charter opportunities, not least TeamOrigin which could be available directly from their Valencia base," Weiland concludes. The 2010 edition of the TP52 World Championship will be held off Valencia from Tuesday October 5 to Saturday October 9, and will be organised by World Sailing Management, the City of Valencia, Consorcio Valencia 2007, the Real Club Nautico de Valencia, the TP52 Class, the Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV) and the Valencian Sailing Federation (FVV). The base for the 2010 TP52 World Championship will be the Marina Real Juan Carlos I at the heart of the port of Valencia, and the competing TP52 fleet will be docked in front of the iconic Veles e Vents building. 2010 TP52 World Championship entries: - Weapon of Choice (GBR) Extreme Trapani French rising star, Yann Guichard, skipper of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, currently leads the overall Extreme Sailing Series leaderboard, having battled his way to the top demonstrating his picture-perfect starts and his team's impressive boat-handling skills latterly at the last event in Kiel. Guichard, on 22 points, leads by just 2 points ahead of the youngest skipper in the fleet at just 28, Paul Campbell-James and The Wave, Muscat. The all-British Ecover Sailing Team team led by, Vendee Globe star Mike Golding, is in third place one point behind Campbell-James. The first day of racing on 23 September will see the fleet head out of the harbour for some longer, classic windward/leeward courses before finishing inside the harbour ahead of the official opening ceremony in the evening. The in-harbour, stadium-style racing in front of the public will start on the afternoon of Friday 24 September for the seven top professional teams.
