On impressive scores of 3 -1 for the day, Richard Vojta's Grand Soleil 42R Bohemia Express (CZE) leads the 21 entries in the Alpha division, but by only a quarter point over Christian Plump's Beluga Sailing Team (GER) who scored 2 -2 on the day. Results in the Beta division were sometimes even closer, with first place in the first race and 5th place in the second race scored as ties. It may be no surprise therefore that the division leader and runner-up were both involved in those ties, though the leader has made a wider jump forward in the standings than seen in the Alpha division results. Jurgen Klinghardt's X-332 Sport (GER) patent 3 tied Erik van Vuuren's team on Salona (NED) in Race 1, but won outright by 40 seconds in Race 2 to make a nearly clean sweep of the day and take a 4.75 point lead. Besides the high speeds and close racing, the fresh conditions also unfortunately caused serious problems for some teams. Amongst the numerous broken sails and other gear failures, possibly the most spectacular breakage was the gooseneck sheared off the mast during a practice gybe on Gorm Gondesen's Rogers 46 Shakti (GER). The break caused significant damage to the carbon spar, forcing them ashore for the day. Fortunately, a sistership to Shakti is not far away in Kiel, so negotiations are now underway to see if another spar can be borrowed to get them racing again soon. Principal Race Officer Claus Otto Hansen of the host Flensburger Segel Club expressed concern for tomorrow's forecast of similar wind and more for the planned long and short offshore races, but feels that the conditions will not be dangerous and thus suitable for this ISAF-sanctioned offshore championship. There are seven possible course options ranging from 30 to 85 miles, with the starting area for each positioned further west in the fiord towards the town of Flensburg. Hansen says he will choose a course option in the morning that will consider the safety of the participants if rough weather is forecast. Racing tomorrow resumes with an earlier start planned for 0900 local time, with the first-to-finish time limit being at 0100 on Thursday morning. www.fsc.de/regatten/orci-worlds-2010 Old Scores To Settle at the Danish Open With the Danish Open being one of just two remaining events for teams to qualify for the Championship deciding Monsoon Cup, the 2010 Danish Open has all the hallmarks to be one of the most competitive and fiercely fought match racing contests of the year so far. Last year, the action was peppered with penalties and upsets, with the fierce race between Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing and Jes Gram Hansen (DEN) Trifork Racing in the semi-final epitomising the heated nature of match racing. In 2010, the Danish Open will shift location from the city of Aarhus to the 'Bright Green Island' of Bornholm where a melting pot of talent will compete for the honours from the 8 to 12 September. Six of the top seven teams in the 2010 ISAF World Match Racing Tour Championship are on the entry list, including current Tour leader, Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team, defending World Match Racing Champion Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing Team and Ben Ainslie (GBR) TEAMORIGIN - the triple Olympic gold medallist and skipper of Britain's America's Cup Challenger team. Four-time World Match Racing Champion Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing, former World Champion Bertrand Pace (FRA) Aleph Sailing Team, Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team, Francesco Bruni (ITA) Azzurra, Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Hansen Global Team complete the group of Tour Card Holders set to compete. The best of the Cruiser/Racer mini maxis looks to have been Adriano Calvini's Felci 61 Itacentodue (ITA), whose score line of 9,10,7 in the Worlds fleet was by far the most aggressive of the day amongst the less race-oriented group of contenders. With a 9, 6 in the second and third races, Allsmoke (MLT) might reasonably have hoped for better things had a damaged mainsail ahead of the start not wrecked their first race and led to a trip back to the marina for a replacement. Allsmoke were not alone in having problems. Michael Cotter, division winner here in 2009, had his racing curtailed completely, also before the off, with a forestay problem. Work is underway to get Whisper (IRL) back out on the course for tomorrow. Idea (ITA) had a crew injury during the first race that cut short their day. H20 (ITA) and Lupa of London (ITA) failed to finish the last race of the day. On the coastal course, it was screecher. 36-nautical miles are meat and drink to the maxi yachts. Igor Simcic's Esimit Europa 2 (SLO) was fastest around the track, which took them to a windward mark, followed by a run to Monaci and a fast reach past alongside Caprera as they dived into the channel. It was downwind all the way to Barrettinelli di Fuori, where the fleet barrelled out of the 'Alley' into the building seaway and an upwind slog to the finish off Porto Cervo. The Supermaxi Division saw two of the largest yachts on the course - Hasso Plattner's Visione (GER) and Albert Buell's Saudade (MLT) engage in a Teutonic match-race both inside and outside the Maddalena archipelago. Suggesting that the crews threw their 40-plus-metre steeds into tack after tack and gybe after gybe would be to exaggerate. Tomorrow will see coastal racing for all divisions. The weather forecast has a degree of uncertainty about it with wind predictions varying from the dull to the unnerving. Now Jason is pretty quiet talker - so everyone in the room leaned forward to hear him speak, and after about a minute you just knew this was one smart guy... He ran through the reasons behind his preference for designing hull shapes that combine low drag and high stability, vital for making smaller boats highly competitive under IRC rules, and which seem to perform well under almost any rule. A quick look at the Ker website win-list confirms a very successful 2010 - particularly from designs such as Ker 46 Tonnerre de Breskens and the Ker 39 Antix Eile. When Jason started expanding on the CFD done for the Ker 40, I got the feeling here was someone that not only knew his stuff, but had the rare ability to explain it - even to a slow learner like me. The Ker 40 project had a planned timeline - but the surge of interest in this boat has rapidly brought that forward. Rob Brown confirmed deposits have been taken for six orders in the UK, Asia, and Australia, with further strong interest in the USA and Europe. Almost a decade after he won the first of his two Olympic silver medals at the Sydney 2000 Games, Bundock, a former Olympic class Tornado sailor and multiple world champion, has shown age has only made him better as he and van Leeuwen sailed to victory at the Dutch F18 championships. Part of the 2Bsailing team, Bundock and van Leeuwen beat 2008 and 2009 F18 world champion Coen De Koning and Thijse Visser for the victory at the regatta with 2009 Dutch F18 champion Mischa Heemskerk and Bastiaan Tentij finishing third. Dutch Olympian and former Olympic class world champion Carolijn Brouwer and crewmate Wouter Samama finished fourth. Since teaming up in the C2 earlier this season, Bundock and van Leeuwen have claimed victory in the NAM REM Race, where they clean swept every race in the regatta, and the long-distance Euro Cats Cup in Belgian. The Notice of Race can be found on the Club's website www.rciyc.je Towing In The Vikings The alarm was raised about 2.20pm on Saturday 4 September 2010 when the Viking longboat, crewed by members of "Ardglass Vikings" a charity organisation based in Ireland, got into difficulties whilst under sail off Upper Largo. Strong winds and a heavy swell made sea conditions very difficult and when the Viking crew tried to row their craft back to shore they were pushed further out to sea by the wind and swell. This area of the bay is on the extremes of the operating areas of Anstruther and Kinghorn lifeboats giving both boats a sea journey of 45 and 20 minutes respectively. Kinghorn's faster Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat was first on scene around 3pm and took the vessel under tow. The Anstruther all-weather lifeboat joined them very soon thereafter and both lifeboats worked together to recover the longboat and its crew to the safe haven of nearby Methil docks. Anstruther Coxswain Michael Bruce on his return to Anstruther commented: 'It was a little like we had stepped back in time as we approached this vessel and its crew who were dressed in Viking clothing. 'Strong winds and very difficult sea conditions presented myself and our colleagues from Kinghorn quite a challenge to get this vessel and its crew back to shelter at Methil docks. Once again, however the benefits of the robust, tried and tested training that the RNLI provides its volunteers was to the fore allowing us to combine our resources and expertise together with the crew from Kinghorn and bring this difficult situation to a swift and positive conclusion.' www.anstrutherlifeboat.org.uk Featured Brokerage Mirage has been completely refurbished in 2009.
