Just five points separated the top six men's 470 teams going into the Medal Race, and it was going to take an outstanding performance to secure gold. The Greeks were greeted with their favourite conditions - strong and gusty winds - and Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis took up the early running just ahead of Israel, represented by Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela. Israel seized the advantage a short way into the three-lap windward/leeward course, although with the wind shifting wildly from side to side, no lead was every secure. On the final leg the Greeks pounced on a couple of small tactical errors by Israel and Mantis and Kagialis powered across the finish line just seconds ahead of Kliger and Sela. Mantis explained his strategy after losing the early lead: "I focused on staying close, we got the lucky gust, and we moved to the front again." Kliger, twice the runner-up in past European Championships, said he was "happy and disappointed" to have won a third silver in his long 470 career. "Gold was in my hands, so I'm a little bit disappointed, but I missed the layline at the last windward mark and gybed too late compared with the Greeks, we didn't stay enough between him and the finish." The women's leaderboard may not have been as tight as the men's, although there was still plenty of drama and uncertainty on the race course, with capsizes and boats hitting marks keeping the finishing order uncertain until the last. While the Danes had fallen out of medal contention after an unsteady outing the previous day, Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer gave themselves the consolation of winning the Medal Race. Lelagain owned by Franco Solerio with tactician Branco Brcin is the winner of the X-35 World Championship with 34 points (a 13 point lead on Karma, second overall). This is the second consecutive World title: in 2009 the yacht won the World Championship in Germany and in 2010 triumphed in the X-35 class at the Copa del Rey. Sideracordis owner Pier Vettor Grimani with Daniele Cassinari is the European X-41 Champion with 23 points (6 point lead on th Le Coq Hardi second overall). For more information please call 207-244-5509. Big Gear at the Happy Baie The appallingly named Happy Baie started on Friday and featured a fantastic line-up of boats. Previewing this autumn's Route du Rhum were five 'Ultime' boats - the three Irens-Cabaret sisterships Francis Joyon's IDEC, Thomas Coville's Sodebo (both based in La Trinite) and Sidney Gavignet's Oman Air, on which Gavignet recently demolished the outright fully crew Round Britain record - singlehanded. In addition there were two of Baron Benjamin de Rothschild's Gitana fleet - Yann Guichard's elongated ORMA 60 Gitana 11 and the former Innovations Explorer/Orange/Kingfisher maxi-cat Gitana 13. The Mini Maxis completed two windward-leeward races, the first started at 12.15 p.m. and saw Alegre - whose crew is a mix of nationalities ranging from the UK, to Spain, New Zealand and South Africa - take victory over Neville Crichton's Shockwave (NZL). Titan 15 with Bill Koch at the helm and Gavin Brady on tactics came in third. The second race saw Alegre win again ahead of Niklas Zennstrom's Ran in second and Shockwave in third. With the possibility of nine races being held and a range of wind and sea conditions predicted over the course of the week, the fight for the title of World Champion will be an interesting and hard-fought one. The remaining divisions completed a coastal race of 30 nautical miles which took them on a beat to the north of the La Maddalena archipelago to round Barrettinelli di Fuori before heading back down along the coast past Capo Ferro and onwards past Porto Cervo to the finish line in the Gulf of Pevero. Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow, 7th September at 11.30 a.m. South-easterly winds which could build to 25 knots in the afternoon are forecast. The team which has members of all three services will be conducting a notional start and photo opportunity using the bridge of the ship and a Rib as the start line. Each Service has nominated a lead fund raiser and Maj Mark Collins RE is the Challenge fund coordinator. The primary charity is Help for Heroes and 10% will be donated to each service benevolent funds (total 30%). It is envisaged that each service will raise at least £5k, which means once running costs have been accounted for (fuel, vehicle hire and ferry costs) there should be in excess of £10k raised for charity. Noye, who outsailed some of Australia's most experienced adult match racing yachtsmen in winning this year's Tasmanian Open Match Racing Championship earlier this year, won 14 of his matches in the two round-robins and then went through to win the final yesterday in straight matches. The Tasmanians tied with Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's Jordan Reece at the end of the two round-robins against other teams from Southport Yacht Club, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Sandringham Yacht Club. In the final, Noye and his crew of Edward Snowball, Tom Ransley, Rowan Clark and Chris Jones, defeated the RSYS team 2-0 while in the petit final Jay Griffin (CYCA) defeated Joel Turner (Southport Yacht Club) 2-0. Snowball sailed with Noye when they won the Tasmanian Open Match Racing Championship, beating notable sailors Nick Rogers and Rod Chamberlain, who coached the RYCT team at the Youth Championship. Noye will return to Laser sailing at the RYCT but will also represent Tasmania in the Australian Open Match Racing Championships on the River Derwent in November. In early January he and another champion young Tasmanian George Jones will crew for Stephen Shield in his new Ridgeway Dragon in the Prince Philip Cup and World Championship on Melbourne's Port Phillip. -- Peter Campbell Industry News Strachan brings over 15 years of business development experience and a background working in the sports marketing industry having represented a number of global sports properties. Prior to establishing his own sports marketing business, he held roles at IMG (UK) where he developed corporate partnerships for a number of prestigious tournaments including The Open Championship and also headed corporate sales for Wembley Stadium. Strachan joins the World Match Racing Tour on 13 September and will be responsible for identifying and targeting potential Tour title sponsors as well as secondary partners. --------------------------------------------- French marine industry federation FIN has reported 'encouraging' signs for French boating, but warns that caution is still necessary ahead of this autumn's boat show season. New boat registrations for September 2009-July 2010 have stabilised, registering a drop of 3.7 per cent compared to a drop of 17.46 per cent the year previous. Engine sales are up, which FIN says can be generally be taken as an indication of future boat sales. Outboard sales are up 4.5 per cent for the period compared to a drop of 29.6 per cent the year before, Z-drive and stern drive sales are up 10.5 per cent compared to a drop of 45.2 per cent the year previous, and inboard sales are up 4.4 per cent compared to a drop of 47.4 per cent the year before. France's boatbuilders, distributors and equipment suppliers have historically low stock levels and report a stabilisation of the market. -- IBI, www.ibinews.com --------------------------------------------- British company OC Group and mainland Europe based ThirdPole have been acquired in a non-cash deal that will bring together their competences into a global leading sports marketing and events company. The two brands will remain, OC continuing to specialise in professional sailing teams and events, and ThirdPole which is a new and expanding force in Outdoor Events ranging from running, cycling and biathlon, to more extreme sports including adventure and trail running races. OC and ThirdPole combined aspire to become a world leader of outdoor events on all playing fields: oceans, lakes, mountains, forests and deserts and city centres. The new business will fully own the existing operating companies in France, Switzerland and the UK, and will continue their work with global brands, host cities and regions, sporting federations and other promoters all over the world. The combined business already has events in place for 2011 in more than a dozen countries in Europe, USA and Asia. As the two main shareholders, Remi Duchemin will take up the role of Group CEO and Mark Turner will remain fully engaged in the overall business as Executive Chairman. -- www.ocgroup.com --------------------------------------------- Finnish marine industries federation Finnboat has revealed that 6,233 small craft and motorboats were sold in Finland during the first six months of 2010, resulting in a 13.5 per cent rise over the same time last year. Deliveries of small boats below 6m (20ft) were up by 11.5 per cent to 5,751 units; boats from 6m-8m (20ft-26ft) were up 25.6 per cent to 392 units; and boats from 8m-10m (26ft-33ft) grew by 28 per cent to 64 units. In the largest category, boats over 10m (33ft), the figures showed growth of 52.9 per cent with 26 units delivered. Exports to Sweden jumped by 74.9 per cent to 1,316 units (€23.7m); sales to Norway were up 27.8 per cent to 1,920 units (€22.6m); and sales to Germany were up 56.6 per cent to 198 units (€1.9m). Exports to Russia, however, were down by 77.6 per cent to 65 units (€1.8m), while sales to Greenland were down by 29 per cent to 28 units (€1.6m). -- www.ibinews.com --------------------------------------------- Private client investment manager, Brewin Dolphin, has announced its continued commitment to sponsor the Scottish Series, Scotland's premier sailing regatta, in 2011. The Scottish Series has thrived during Brewin Dolphin's eleven year sponsorship growing awareness and numbers over the period. The event, which generates around £1 million each year for the local economy, has been running for over 30 years and attracts over 1,200 competitors to the picturesque Loch Fyne, over the May holiday weekend. Brewin Dolphin also sponsors the under 16 and under 18 youth rugby competition, the Scottish Schools Cup, which sees over 4,500 children taking part each year. --------------------------------------------- The Velux 5 Oceans has teamed up with marine forecast service PredictWind to ensure skippers and race management have the most accurate weather information available to them. PredictWind combines local topography maps to create the highest resolution wind forecast available for over 20,000 locations around the world. In addition PredictWind runs their own proprietary model at 100km resolution for full global coverage. The eight Velux 5 Oceans skippers as well as the race management team will be provided with the highest level of access to the PredictWind services and can download and overlay the PredictWind wind forecasts on their own navigation/performance racing software. PredictWind's forecasts are updated twice a day and include real-time wind observations, weather routing, trip planning and forecast alerts. -- www.predictwind.com --------------------------------------------- Najadvarvet, one of Sweden's leading sailboat producers, has appointed a new CEO and chairman of the board. Mikael Gustavsson succeeds Per Lindquist as Najad's CEO in November 2010. Gustavsson has many years' experience in both the leisure and commercial marine markets. He joins the company from Nimbus Boats AB, where he was in charge of product development, production and procurement. Per Lindquist will remain on the Najad board in an advisory capacity and will work alongside Gustavsson during a transitional period. Najad has also announced that Hans Johansson will replace Stuart Lawson as chairman of the board on October 1, 2010. Lawson will remain on the board as an ordinary board member. Johansson has a background as a mechanical engineer, entrepreneur, manager, CEO, chairman and board member of listed and unlisted companies. His marine industry knowledge and experience includes time with Sportmanship AB, Nimbus Boats AB and Safe at Sea AB. -- IBI, www.ibinews.com --------------------------------------------- Following an informative Training Review last May, the Netherlands National Training Programme passed an inspection, from 16 - 19 August, to become the second such scheme to gain full ISAF Accreditation within the Learn to Sail Programme. After the four-day inspection, the Netherlands Watersportverbond and its CWO training system received international recognition for their training programmes. The inspection involved a thorough scrutiny of the training scheme administration followed by visits to three sailing schools and one sailing club to ensure that there was both consistency and integrity throughout the programme. In addition to the sailing schools, there are a number of clubs that deliver local training. The Watersportverbond is currently working hard to integrate the CWO training system throughout the affiliated clubs. -- www.sailing.org/training --------------------------------------------- The venerable Edey & Duff boatyard founded in 1968 by Mait Edey and Peter Duff has ceased operations. The small but respected yard, located at the end of quiet Aucoot Road on the border of Mattapoisett and Marion in southeastern Massachusetts USA, was unable to continue operations following the unexpected death of longtime general manager Dave Davignon last December. Over the yard's 40-year history it turned out such sailing classics as the Sakonnet 23, the Doughdish, the Stone Horse 23, the Stuart Knockabout and the Fatty Knees dinghy, as well as the Hunt-designed Conch 27 center console. No word yet on what is being done with the molds and boats that were currently being restored and serviced by the yard. -- www.edeyandduff.com --------------------------------------------- In another significant move to attract foreign investors for tourism schemes, the Cuban State Council has issued a decree allowing 99-year leases on state-owned land to be provided to overseas investors for residential construction. This is important as the financial viability of any marina-related development would need things such as condominiums to make then work. It is reported that negotiations between the Cuban government and potential investors in respect of 16 golf courses will start in January, but a number of projects are already further ahead than this. At least four projects are more advanced and three of these include marinas. Foster & Partners is reported to be designing a resort for a British-Spanish group at Bahia Honda in the western Pinar del Rio province that will include a 200-berth marina and three golf courses. The project will feature some 2,000 residential units. At Varadero in Matanzas province to the east of Havana, the $400m Carbonera Country Club is planned by Esencia Hotels & Resorts, a UK group. This will have a marina, an 18-hole golf course and 730 residential units. A third marina features in a resort development located at Jibaco, some 80km east of Havana. This will include three golf courses, a marina village and it is planned by Leisure Canada of Vancouver. -- IBI, www.ibinews.com Tom Webb OBE In 1950, as post-war Britain became increasingly interested in the pursuit of leisure boating, Webb was appointed secretary of the Ship and Boatbuilders National Federation (SBBNF) - later to become the British Marine Federation (BMF). During his time at the SBBNF, which spanned from 1950 to 1986, he helped turn a cottage industry into a major player in the leisure and commercial marine markets worldwide. His outstanding service to the UK marine industry earned him an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). Webb later became a director of National Boat Shows (NBS) and helped to create a stand-alone London International Boat Show at Olympia in 1984. He also oversaw the show's subsequent move to Earls Court. Featured Brokerage This particular Class 40 has been professionally campaigned and achieved success in a number of races. With her class certificate complete and equipment updated in 2008 (all running rigging replaced!)She has been put to bed correctly with all items removed for dry storage and put ashore. She is the Class 40 for sale with most things taken care of apart from a new sailor or racer.It would be difficult to find another class 40 with her build, equipment and pedigree for a similar price.The owner is also open to offers of part exchange on another boat, a house or a car.
