2018 Annual Conference - 30 and 31 October Recap
World Sailing's 2018 Annual Conference continued in Sarasota, Florida, USA on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 October. Equipment Committee

Equipment for the Paris 2024 was a hot topic in the Equipment Committee.

At the 2018 Mid-Year Meeting in London, Great Britain in May World Sailing's Council confirmed the five new Events for Paris 2024, following the confirmation of the five earlier this year, as:

Men's Windsurfer
Women's Windsurfer
New Event, Mixed One-Person Dinghy
New Event, Mixed Two Person Dinghy
New Event, Mixed Kiteboard

They joined the following Events and their Equipment on the Paris 2024 slate:

World Sailing received submissions ahead of the Annual Conference proposing criteria and format for Paris 2024.

The committee debated the equipment and discussed numerous submissions and recommended the following submissions to Council:
Mixed Kiteboarding - Submission 097-18
Mixed Two-Person Dinghy - Submission 058-18
Men’s Windsurfer - Submission 091-18 (with amendments)
Women’s Windsurfer - Submission 091-18 (with amendments)
Mixed One Person-Dinghy - Submission 082-18

Furthermore, a report on the re-evaluation process for the Men’s and Women’s One Person Dinghy was presented. The following classes were selected to proceed to the equipment-trial phase as part of the re-evaluation process:

D-Zero, presented by Devotti Sailing s.r.o.
Laser Standard and Laser Radial sailboat, presented by ILCA
Melges 14, presented by Melges Boat Works Inc., NELO and Mackay Boats Ltd.
RS Aero, presented by RS Sailing.

The Equipment Committee also discussed classes who are aiming to become International Class Association. They recommended that the Diam 24, International Windsurfer Class Association and 12 metre, categories A to D, receive the status with the 12 metre, category E, to receive Classic Class Status.

Statement From The International Finn Association
The International Finn Association (IFA), representing the Finn class, is very concerned that the late and unannounced submission (037-18) by the World Sailing Board to overturn the extensively discussed and democratically voted Submission M22-18 in May (including the Mixed One-Person Dinghy event and clearly indicating the Finn as the male equipment) is further driving our sport into expensive elitist Olympic events which will result in the decrease of universality and participation in Olympic sailing.

Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final set to make Miami debut
A global line-up of top young sailors from 16 countries and five continents are feverishly preparing to face off in the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final from November 9-11.

The climax of the planet’s largest youth sailing program, directed by double Olympic champions Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher, will crown two new world champion athletes - and for all 32 participants, the regatta could be the stepping stone to a professional career.

After a dazzling 2016 finale in Rhode Island, this season the next wave of sailing will crest with a World Final in Miami for the first time. Developed by the Austrian icons Hagara and Steinacher, Red Bull Foiling Generation gives wings to talented sailors aged 16-20 by introducing them to the type of cutting-edge foiling technology used in the America’s Cup.

Anticipation for the World Final has been building ever since the season kicked off in October 2017. Each two-person team will race the Flying Phantom catamaran

New York Yacht Club to host 2020 IRC/ORC World Championship
The Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) working in cooperation with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and Union National Course au Large (UNCL), founding partners of the IRC rating system, are pleased to announce the approval of the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) to host the 2020 IRC/ORC World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

This will be the first World Championship for offshore boats held in the United States since the IMS World Championship in 2000, also hosted by the New York Yacht Club.

The proposed dates are 25 September - 3 October 2020, subject to slight modifications pending review by a Working Party formed by members representing all three partners to start on the detailed planning.

"Offshore sailing is part of the DNA of the New York Yacht Club," said Commodore Philip A. Lotz. "Our waterfront clubhouse at Harbour Court combined with Newport's tremendous sailing conditions and extensive marine infrastructure, provide what we feel is one of the greatest venues for offshore racing. The Club is very excited to welcome the world to our hometown for the 2020 IRC/ORC World Championship."

The typical format of the combined Worlds has been 2-3 offshore or coastal races, followed by 6-7 inshore races. Racing will be in three classes defined by the size and rated speeds of the boats, and all-amateur Corinthian prizes will be offered in each class. ORC and IRC ratings will be used to score the racing, however the Working Party will make the final determination on how when a Notice of Race is issued for the event in 2019.

Greg Wilcox maintains OK Dinghy World No 1 position throughout 2018
With the 2019 World Championship heading to New Zealand in just over three months, Greg Wilcox, maintains his lead at the top of the final OK Dinghy World Ranking List of 2018 as the only Kiwi in the top 20.

This release includes 11 events from July to October, including the World and European Championships and national events in Poland, Sweden, The Netherlands Denmark, Britain, Germany, France and Belgium.

The ranking is calculated from 45 events over the last two years, with each sailor counting their best five events. Out of more than 500 sailors on the list, there are 29 new names, reflecting the growth of the class in the past year.

Wilcox only managed one podium place in the events counting for this release, but his consistency across all events has kept him in the No 1 place since August 2017. So he will have been World No. 1 for all of 2018.

Remedy - Star Sailors League
A criticism of sailing from both inside and outside the sport has been the lack of an undisputed World Sailing Champion. You don’t have to delve too deeply into the Star Sailors League to realise that there is finally a solution

The countdown is on for the sixth running of the Star Sailors League Finals in the Bahamas. This event, which aims to decide the best sailor in the world, will again be hosted by the Nassau Yacht Club, with racing taking place on the warm, azure waters of Montagu Bay from 3 to 8 December. As usual there is a prize pot of US$200,000 up for grabs.

Times are changing in the Star Sailors League. For its first four editions the Finals were won exclusively by titans of the Star class: Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih in 2014 and 2016; Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada in 2013; and George Szabo and Edoardo Natucci in 2015. However, the applecart was upturned in 2017 when the British three-time Moth World Champion and Beijing Laser gold medallist Paul Goodison came out on top.

In addition to being a profoundly talented sailor, Goodison’s victory would not have been possible had he not sailed with an experienced crew in Frithjof Kleen. Kleen represented Germany with Robert Stanjek in the Star at the London Olympics, having claimed silver at the 2011 World Championship in Perth. With Goodison he instigated a 10-day training programme going into the Finals. The line-up in Nassau included familiar Star boat heroes like Paul Cayard, Torben and Lars Grael, London 2012 competitors Robert Scheidt, Mark Mendelblatt, Freddy Loof, Jonathan Lobert, Xavier Rohart, Eivind Melleby, Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Hamish Pepper. The line-up also included French offshore legends Franck Cammas and Loïck Peyron, Luna Rossa helmsman Francesco Bruni and some talented youngsters, German Philipp Buhl and British Nacra 17 World Champion Ben Saxton. The work Goodison and Kleen put in was enough to finish ahead of all of them.

20 IMOCAs competing in the Route du Rhum
On Sunday 4th November in Saint-Malo, 20 monohulls from the Imoca Class will be lining up at the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, the first solo event in the IMOCA Globe Series, the class’s new world championship. A record number of entrants and an exceptional and varied line-up confirm that the class is thriving and continually developing.

More good news: at least seven new boats will be lining up in the next Vendee Globe with the latest announcement coming from the Japanese sailor, Kojiro Shiraishi.

This is the seventh time that theIMOCA fleet has taken part in the Route du Rhum. With twenty sailors competing in the 11th edition, there have never been so many of these monohulls since they first took part back in 1994. As a comparison, there were nine IMOCAs in the previous edition in 2014.The line-up is extremely varied with in particular three women setting off and five European nationalities represented (France, Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Finland). Among the twenty skippers competing in the 2018 Route du Rhum, ten were at the start of the 2016-2017 Vendee Globe. The ten others are new projects, which proves how there is a strong replenishment rate in the IMOCA class.

Only one IMOCA boat from the latest generation is registered for the Route du Rhum, Jeremie Beyou’s Charal, which was launched on 21st August. But for the 2020 Vendee Globe, at least six other new monohulls will be lining up. Four skippers have already made their project official: Charlie Dalin, Sebastien Simon, Alex Thomson and Armel Tripon. The Japanese skipper, Kojiro Shiraishi will also be present in 2020 with a new generation IMOCA. He will be setting sail around the world aboard a sistership to Jeremie Beyou’s Charal.

Provisional schedule for the 2018-2021 IMOCA Globe Series:
- Event 1: Monaco Globe Series(1st- 8th June 2018): double-handed, weighting of 2 (victory went to Paul Meilhat and Gwenole Gahinet on SMA)
- Event 2: Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe(start on 4th November 2018): solo, weighting of 4
- Event 3: Valencia Mediterranean Globe Series(Spring 2019): double-handed and solo, weighting of 3
- Event 4: Fastnet Race(5th August 2019): double-handed, weighting of 1
- Event 5: Transat Jacques Vabre(start in October-November 2019): double-handed, weighting of 3
- Event 6: The Transat(start on 10th May 2020): solo, weighting of 4
- Event 7: New York-Vendee(start in June 2020): solo, weighting of 4
- Event 8: Vendee Globe(start on 8th November 2020): solo, weighting of 10

World record attempt in York as man takes to Ouse in giant pumpkin
Tom Pearcy, the owner of York Maze, paddled the huge pumpkin down the Ouse in an attempt to set a new record for the world’s biggest pumpkin boat.

Weighing over 97 stone, the hollowed out pumpkin was hoisted into the river with a JCB. Tom was cheered on as he sailed between Ouse and Skeldergate Bridge.

Tom said: "Roman conquerors, Viking invaders, medieval knights, Victorian industrialists and now tourists have all sailed down York’s River Ouse. But never in York’s 2000 year history has anyone ever rowed a giant pumpkin down the Ouse."

Tom's stunt was carefully planned with authorities including the Canals and Rivers Trust and York Rescue Boat, who were in attendance to provide safety cover.

The world record giant pumpkin boat will be transported back to York Maze where it will be on display during the York Maze Halloween festival until Sunday, November 4.

Golden Globe Day 122: Susie Goodall 4th at Hobart film gate
The barnacles were not nearly as bad as on Uku Randmaa’s boat One and All when the 3rd placed Estonian sailor passed through the BoatShed.com Hobart film drop last Friday. “I keep going into the water to scrub the bottom each time I am becalmed, so it shouldn’t be too bad.” She explained before donning a wetsuit to dive on the hull. Two hours later, and at the cost of one scrubbing brush and snorkel, which had dropped to the bottom, Susie proclaimed the hull clean again.

Problems with her Monitor wind vane self-steering were thought to be more challenging, but after unbolting the system from the back of the boat, it took just 20 minutes to re-align the cogs so that it would self-steer the boat down wind again.

Recalling the adventure since starting this solo non-stop circumnavigation from Les Sables d’Olonne on July 1st, Goodall, the sole woman and youngest competitor in thise race, joked: “The Indian Ocean has just been awful. The Pacific will be all blue skies and 25knot winds behind me all the way to Cape Horn.”

It was the Southern Ocean storm experienced two weeks ago that remains most vivid. “That was brutal - It took me a week to recover! The seas were coming from four directions and I kept being knocked down. I was really struggling with the wind vane, which had been bent and would no longer steer downwind. I had to hand steer to keep the boat stern-to the waves, but even so, some waves would come and hit us side-on. Even after the big blow, I still got knocked down a couple more times by the confused swells.”

Susie set sail again at 02:00 UTC to cross the Tasman and head out into the South Pacific bound for Cape Horn, knowing that another Southern Ocean storm is expected in two days.

The next arrivals at the BoatdShed.com Hobart film drop will be American/Hungarian Istvan Kopar on Saturday sailing his Tradewind 35 Puffin, followed by Finland’s Tapio Lehtinen and his Gaia 36 Asteria. Her engine has packed up and her hull is covered in barnacles, so sailing in to Storm Bay and picking up a mooring without any outside assistance could be challenging.
