Tenth Annual Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar Competition
Supported by Latitude Kinsale and Seahorse magazine

This fall and winter we celebrate our ten annual competition to find the Best Sailor's Bar on earth...

The winner will join these hallowed ranks:

2009 - Peter-Cafe Sport - Horta, Azores
2010 - The Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke in the BVI
2011 - IYAC in Newport, Rhode Island USA
2012 - Sint Maarten Yacht Club
2013 - One Bar Playa Blanca
2014 - The King & Queen, Hamble
2015 - Plas Heli, Wales and Pier View, Cowes
2016 - Pewaukee Yacht Club
2017 - Pensacola Yacht Club, and St. Thomas Yacht Club

This year's contest changes things up a bit. We've listened to our readership and have decided to enact some suggested changes to how we pick the winner. This year, it's not just votes that will put a bar on the podium. Some bars and clubs have a huge customer base. Some are far smaller due to geographical location, seasonal operation and other factors (several popular bars can only be reached by boat!). So as for that old adage about size... it doesn't matter this year!

For our 10th anniversary, are three factors that will be taken into consideration by the editor of Scuttlebutt Europe, the staff of Wight Vodka and the editor and staff of Seahorse magazine:

1. Best story about why a particular bar is the best in the world. Stories like "I met both my husbands here", "I never knew that there were that many different burgees in the world, let alone at a single establishment", and "A place lost in time, when you walk in it could be 1930 or 2017" will weigh heavily in our decision.

2. Drink recipe created at, or at the very least, SERIOUSLY promoted at, said establishment. Full instructions and ingredients please, so that we can all conduct serious research on the subject as the days (in the northern hemisphere) grow shorter and darker.

3. The voting. The top ten establishments based on 1) and 2) will be determined by Scuttlebutt Europe, Wight Vodka and Seahorse and announced on Tuesday December 4. Voting start that day and continue until midnight Friday December 28. Our winner will be announced on New Year's Eve. Contributions on stories and drinks will be welcomed, and factored into the selection, until midnight December 28.

All previous winners are eligible for the tenth anniversary award.

The winning establishment will be presented with a bottle of Wight Vodka and a framed certificate of victory... and from Latitude Kinsale, our winner will have a custom, hand made 3D chart of the winners harbour/location in either a modern or a classic B&W chart. The chart will be framed in one of their exclusive frames incorporating Surround Lighting™ and mounted on carbon fibre. Value €2000.

Bobby Nash is the owner and the original 3D chart artist, with 20 years experience. His work is known for its originality, its intricate attention to detail and is always beautifully presented. Used as prizes for events such as the J class, the VOR, Superyacht Regattas, and commissioned for many yachts, offices and homes.

Latitude Kinsale offers a wide range of products from 3D chart to bespoke 3D Chart Tables , Light Charts, Gold Coast charts. The ORIGINS design offers the client an affordable gift/corporate gift for any occasion

So... pour yourself a Wight Vodka cocktail, sit by a fireplace, and think about YOUR favorite bar and the drinks they serve.

A Record-Breaking Edition With 213 Boats At The Starting Line

Venice, 21st October: difficult weather conditions with rain and winds up to 30 knots made this year's 9th edition of the Veleziana regatta a riveting event for all involved, including its organisers Compagnia della Vela, its patrons the Italian Navy and the Port System Authority for the Northern Adriatic Sea, and supporting organisation Vento di Venezia.

An impressive line-up of 213 boats took part in the 2018 edition of the Veleziana regatta. First place was awarded to the Slovenian team onboard Way of Life, who set a new record for the regatta by completing the 8-mile course in only 47 minutes and 21 seconds, crossing the finish line at the San Marco basin in front of the Compagnia della Vela headquarters. Second place was that of Anywave Safilens (skippered by Alberto Leghissa) while third place went to Paolo Montefusco's Idrusa Brinmar, which could count among its crew members Roberto Ferrarese and champion of champions Dodo Gorla, twice Star Class bronze medallist in the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympics in 1960 and 1984, and Star Class world champion also in 1984.

The official award ceremony for the 9th edition of the Veleziana regatta will take place at the Compagnia della Vela headquarters on the Venetian island of San Giorgio on 24th November at 12.00pm.

Kuznetsov Crowned Melges 32 World Champion
Cagliari, Italy: On a very intense, final day of racing in Cagliari at the 2018 Melges 32 World Championship hosted by Yacht Club Cagliari, defending 2017 Champion Pavel Kuznetsov at the helm of TAVATUY with tactician Evgeny Neugodnikov, and crew Alexander Patrushev, Egor Konuhovski, Konstantin Besputing, Oleg Krivov and Valeriy Zatsarinskiy, won the Class' most prestigious trophy for a second, consecutive year in a row. They are the 2018 Melges 32 World Champions!

The last day in Cagliari brought on more light air conditions making only one race possible. For the start, it was an "all or nothing" situation as both Matteo Balestrero's GIOGI (Branko Brcin, tactician) and Kuznetsov squared off and went to the mattresses.

Very decisively, Kuznetsov immediately went right while his opponent opted for the opposite side. As the fleet approached the top weathermark, a slight rotation in the wind tipped the scales in Kuznetsov's favor, who already had a comfortable lead. Balestrero on the other hand, found himself out of the top ten and with penalty, desperate to stay ahead of third place finisher Martin Reintjes' CAIPIRINHA (Gabrielle Benussi, tactician).

Congratulations also goes to 2018 Corinthian Melges 32 World Champion Kilian Holzapfel's Homanit with tactician Jolbert van Dijk, and crew members Nikolaus Beulke, Albert Buitenhuis, Jeroen Hameter, Robin Jacobs, Maximilian Stein and Joshua Weber. They bested runner up Alessandro Lotto Flavio Campana on Dumbovit, followed by Carlo Babini Merlo sailing SKADI in third.

Golden Globe Race: Update on Lepage Rescue
French solo yachtsman Loic Lepage is expected to be evacuated from his dismasted yacht Laaland shortly after first light on Tuesday (23:30 UTC Monday). By then both the bulk carrier Shiosai and the sailing yacht Alizes II will have reached Laaland's position in the South Indian Ocean some 670 miles SW of Perth Western Australia, and will await the arrival of an Australian P-8A search and rescue plane overhead before starting the rescue operation.

The forecast for the region is good – 15-20 knot winds and a 3 metre swell. The primary plan is for Lepage to be recovered from his liferaft tethered on a long line to his dismasted yacht, by a boat crew from the bulk carrier Shiosai. Francis Tolan, skipper of the S/V Alizes II, a Beneteau Ocean 43 competing in the Long Route solo circumnavigation will providie backup. If conditions prove adverse, then the MV Shiosai may provide a weather lee for Alizes II to conduct the transfer instead.

Lepage has been fully briefed by GGR Organisers and will evacuate wearing his survival suit and carrying a second EPIRB on standby, VHF radio, personal location beacon and his grab bag. He has set up a bright strobe light on deck and rigged his Echomax inflatable SOLAS radar reflector 2 metres off the deck.

The 62-year old Frenchman from Vannes has also cut away all rigging so that there are no water hazards around the yacht, and has his engine ready to start should he be called to manoeuvre his boat. Both Satphone and VHF radio are on standby for incoming communications.

The Australian P-8A search and rescue plane will remain on station until the evacuation has been completed.

Etchells Worlds Day One
Click on image for photo gallery.

On shore this morning you felt that it was going to be a grand day. The time had come. Race one, and even race two were upon us. A champion crew was soon going to be determined for the 2018 Etchells World Championship being held on Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Australia.

Yet once out past Green Island, there was less of the 8-10 knots from the Sou'east that had blessed the grounds of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly, and much, much more of the three knots or less, and from anywhere ranging from 010 to 110 degrees. So it was not surprising at all to see the Answering Pennant hoisted before the midday hour arrived.

Some thought we might see some action by 1300hrs. Others went for a more realistic 1430hrs, which ended up being much closer to the mark in the end. This also meant it would be a one-race affair for the day. So with more than a couple of hours to kill, shade became the commodity in requirement, and so tarps, umbrellas and other items began adorning craft, as their sailors sought shelter from the powerful sun.

The good money was placed on a U Flag start being adopted, which meant that effectively you were going home for the day with no racing and no result, and alas for one craft this did occur.

Ultimately the winner was Havoc, (AUS 1461) which is skippered by Iain Murray, with Grant Simmer and Richie Allanson on board.

Of tomorrow, and all the days ensuing until Saturday, Murray simple said, "I think a regatta like this is all about not making a lot of mistakes and maximising your moments!"

Top five after one race:
1. Iain Murray / Grant Simmer / Richard Allanson
2. Martin Hill / Sean O'Rourke / Julian Plante / Matt Belcher
3. Bruce Ferguson / Cameron Miles / David Sampson
4. Jud Smith / Mark Johnson / Andrew Smith
5. John Bertrand / Ben Lamb / Noel Drennan

The new management of Bavaria Yachtbau wants to return to its former glory days as the world's largest manufacturer of leisure boats in series production. "We will invest in the growth of the production capacity and the former strengths of Bavaria. This includes an excellent price-performance ratio, which Bavaria has stood for for many years", Kai Brandes, managing partner of the new owner CMP, explained today.

Berlin-based private equity CMP Capital Management became the new owner of Bavaria Yachtbau in September.

At today's press conference in Giebelstadt, Brandes and the new management explained the planned strategic realignment of the shipyard. "Being a series production shipyard, Bavaria is a manufacturer of inexpensive boats, not luxury yachts", said Brandes. The company's focus is therefore on sailing and motorboats with hull lengths between 10 and 20 metres.

The largest sailing yacht, the Bavaria C65, which was presented as a world premiere at boot Düsseldorf 2018, was taken out of the portfolio a few weeks ago. It was taken over by the Croatian contract manufacturer. The recently introduced sailing yacht Bavaria C 50 has been taken out of series production. The yacht is currently being re-engineered and will go into series production again in December.

The model range will be consolidated going forward. "Now the models will be replaced step by step," explained production manager and COO Erik Appel. Genuine new models are not expected until 2020. 2019 will be the year of consolidation – with the "launch of two or three smaller models", according to COO Erik Appel.

The next half year will be needed to develop the new strategy, says Ralph Kudla, who is joining the management team on behalf of the new owner CMP. "Then we will see what the product range should look like. The emphasis is on boats with a length of 30 to 50 feet. The previous models were still selling very well," says Kudla.
