12 Metre North American Championships
Newport, RI, USA: An eight-race series held Friday through Sunday (September 21-23) on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay determined title holders for the 2018 12 Metre North American Championship. The event, hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club and including divisions for historic 12 Metres from the Modern and Traditional eras (1974-1983 and 1958-1970, respectively), was especially competitive this year due to teams ramping up for the 2019 12 Metre World Championship, which also will be hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club on these same waters off Newport, R.I. next July.
Topping five boats in the Traditional Division was American Eagle, which has been chartered by the American Eagle 2019 Syndicate for this year and next. The team is comprised of regional sailors mostly from Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Bob Morton (Newport) who skippers and leads the syndicate jointly with team member Cindy DeLotto (Newport/Edgartown, Mass.).
Giving American Eagle its best run for the money was Weatherly, chartered by Jay Schachne (Barrington, R.I.) who plans to compete in the Worlds. Weatherly finished with 18 points to American Eagle's 14; however, only two points separated the two boats going into Sunday.
Going into Sunday, Victory '83, skippered by owner Dennis Williams (Hobe Sound, Fla./Newport, R.I.), was leading the four-boat Modern Division by one point, but it was Challenge XII with owner Jack LeFort (Jamestown, R.I.) at the helm that ultimately won – by one point.
At Sunday's afternoon Awards Ceremony at Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the Ted Hood Trophy was awarded to the teams in each division with the highest points overall for the season. Those teams were American Eagle and Challenge XII.
American Eagle is currently the top Americas Fleet contender in the Wayponts Series leading up to the 2019 Worlds.

Defi Azimut
39 minutes and 25 seconds. Sam Davies also had a great race and won 2nd place, less than 7 minutes from the winner. Yann Eliès completed a podium 100% foilers, cutting the line only 11 minutes after Vincent Riou.
Everything was in play on the last big reaching leg of 100 miles, a starboard tack at more than 20 knots by the first four. In this intense cavalcade, Sam Davies stood remarkably well against the assaults of his three pursuers. This morning, she sent a photo of her speedometer showing 26.75 knots in a surf
The skipper of PRB finally took the lead 30 miles from the finish in Lorient, never to let go again. At 11h57 that Vincent crossed the finish line in Lorient, after 18 hours and 39 minutes of racing. His average speed on the direct route: 13.25 knots. Given this performance, he must not regret having equipped his PRB with foils!
Winner of the Dhream Cup at the end of July, Sam Davies scored another great result finishing 2nd in the Azimut Challenge, just 7 minutes behind the winner. She is thus full of confidence in view of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. The podium, 100% foilers, was completed by Yann Eliès. Paul Meilhat, back from injury, took 4th place, ahead of Boris Herrmann and Louis Burton.
Behind, Romain Attanasio, Fabrice Amedeo, Stephane Le Diraison, Alan Roura, Isabelle Joschke, Arnaud Boissieres and Manuel Cousin have completed the course. As a reminder, two abandonments on this 8th edition of the Azimut Challenge: Jeremie Beyou on Charal (electrical concerns) and Erik Nigon aboard Towards a world without AIDS (suspicious sounds from the rudders).

In a westerly wind of 20-25 knots the nine competitors of the Azimut Challenge took part in runs Sunday morning between Groix and Lorient. An exercise for pleasure that allowed the skippers to take guests (members of the technical teams, partners, journalists). They had to set the fastest time on a 1.5-mile stretch.
The long-awaited Charal was perched on its huge foils. After a first unsuccessful attempt, the second was the good one. With a time of 4 minutes and 52 seconds, Jérémie Beyou crushed the competition. Samantha Davies on Initiatives-Cœur (5 minutes 31 seconds) and Paul Meilhat aboard SMA (5 minutes 37 seconds) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
HYS Hamble Winter Series Announcement
Hamble Yacht Services (HYS) and the Hamble River Sailing Club (HRSC) announce a three-year partnership for the HYS Hamble Winter Series. Well over 1,000 sailors will be taking part in the UK's most popular winter series, all of which will benefit from the long-term partnership.
The 2018 HYS Hamble Winter Series will be the 37th edition run by the HRSC, the event is organised by a very experienced team, led by PRO Kathy Smalley, and supported by around 40 dedicated volunteers every race day.
"Organising racing for the series requires resources, and whilst we have the tremendous support of enthusiastic volunteers, the partnership with HYS gives us the financial support to keep entry fees low. The Hamble River Sailing Club is delighted that HYS is sponsoring the series, and we would encourage all of the teams to support HYS, so that our partnership will continue for years to come." commented Steph Merry Commodore of HRSC.

The 2018 HYS Hamble Winter Series will run from the 6th October to 2nd December 2018. Teams will be racing in IRC Classes and One Designs. The action pack programme will feature the IRC Autumn Championship, the Performance 40 Series, the Hamble Big Boat Championship, the Hamble One Design Championship, and J/70 World Qualifiers.

Team NZ confirms working with new Challenger
Emirates Team New Zealand has issued a statement confirming that they interacting with a third Italian team, Columbus 2021.
The Challenge first surfaced on September 8 and will be based at the Imperia Yacht Club.
"The Defender confirms that there have been communications with the lawyer acting for the Columbus 2021 challenger over the past few weeks. He has now supplied preliminary documents in relation to their yacht club and we have provided him with the required details on the process to file a formal Notice of Challenge."
In a report yesterday in the Italian newspaper La Stampa, echoed in the authoratiative Italian sailing magazine, Farevela, it was confirmed that a lawyer for the new team had filed the first set of documents with the America's Cup Defender. Those papers confirm that the club meets the minimum requirements of the Deed of Gift and Protocol governing the 36th America's Cup.
The fact that the first part of the entry documentation had been received was confirmed in the statement from the Defender issued on Tuesday.
Late entries close on November 30, 2018. However, Emirates Team New Zealand have indicated that with the agreement of Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa that time could also be extended further.
There has been no further developments from the second Italian team, the Sardinia Challenge. Similarly with the Team US 21, which said it was one US$10million sponsor short of lodging a formal Challenge. Other teams contemplating a Challenge come from Norway and China.

San Diego YC Sinks the Competition at 2018 Resolute Cup
Newport, R.I. - America's sailing capital saved the best for last, and so did San Diego Yacht Club, which won the 2018 Resolute Cup with error-free sailing when it counted most. With three strong results in the double-points medal round, the team representing the SDYC, skipper Tyler Sinks with crew Nick Martin, Nick Kaschack and Max Hutchinson, moved up the scoreboard from fourth, after the preliminary round of 12 races, to win the fifth edition of the Corinthian championship for U.S. yacht clubs.
The Resolute Cup was first run in 2010 as the U.S. Qualifying Series for the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. The biennial regatta, which is sailed out of the New York Yacht Club Harbor Court, has since developed an identity of its own as yacht clubs from around the United States send their best amateur sailors to Newport, R.I., to compete for national bragging rights in addition to a potential trip to the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, sailing's premiere international Corinthian big-boat regatta.
Eastern skipper Bill Lynn is both the first champion of the Resolute Cup and the only person to have sailed in all five editions. He's seen first hand how the competition has evolved from its original purpose, which was solely to qualify a team for the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.
"Initially it was focused on the Invitational Cup and you tended to have teams that had that goal in mind," says Lynn. "There's a lot of great yacht clubs around this country-with really, really good sailors-that don't necessarily have the resources and the depth of talent to sign up for the Invitational Cup and they stayed away [from the Resolute Cup]. Now that it's turned into a standalone event it seems like it's attracting a really good depth of talent from clubs that we haven't seen before."
San Diego, one of three U.S. yacht clubs to have successfully defended the America's Cup, is no stranger to big regattas. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the club on the line for the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup next year, nor would be it shocking to see the club mirror Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans), which followed up its win in the 2016 Resolute Cup with a win in the 2017 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.
"Hopefully we'll be able to put together some money and make it back here next September," said Sinks.

It's easy to describe your latest design as a cruiser-racer but that often just means a boat that sits somewhere in between the two categories. Elan are taking a rather more scientific approach to their own product descriptions…
The Elan E-Line
There's a gap right in the middle of the new boat market, which has been there for years. If you want a docile cruising yacht that's designed primarily for novice sailors, there are lots of those to choose from. There are also plenty of options if you're mainly focused on racing with a bit of family cruising on the side. But if your style of sailing lies halfway in between, you'll no doubt have noticed that there aren't so many genuine cruiser-racers in production.
This used to be an important segment of the market: yachts designed for experienced sailors who put the same emphasis on both racing and cruising, who value performance and comfort in equal measure, and who above all want a boat that is simply a joy to sail. It's no coincidence that most of today's "modern classics" were originally conceived as cruiser-racers. Today, by contrast, a lot of yacht builders expect their customers to make a fundamental choice between "performance" and "comfort", and they produce yachts accordingly.
Elan has spotted this gap in the Venn diagram between racing and cruising, which it calls "crossover sailing", and moved to fill it.

Lynn Lewis
Lynn Lewis, founder and chairman of Nauticalia, has died aged 81.
Lynn founded Nauticalia in 1974 aboard a converted rubbish barge on the Thames in Shepperton after a successful career in newspaper journalism and TV presenting, having worked on the Sunday Mirror and pioneering BBC's Nationwide.
His niche business quickly grew and he bought the Shepperton Thames-side boatyard in 1986 that remains the company headquarters today.
Lynn was a long-serving and active member of British Marine. He chaired the Marine Trade Association from 1986-89 and was a director of National Boat Shows from 1988-1994.
Often outspoken and non-conformist, Lynn was renowned for his thought-provoking debate.
When not working or relaxing on the Thames, Lynn enjoyed playing and watching cricket. He leaves his wife Val, two children - Lindon and Carol, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

We have received an inquiry from someone who saw a message from Dale Adams about the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project coverage of our research in Newport Harbor, complaining that New Zealand has been slighted. Please note that a year ago we invited New Zealand's 250th Anniversary Committee to participate in our work, but to date we have heard nothing. We also have many media contacts in that country, but they were embargoed last week from doing interviews our current work until after our media event on Friday, Sept. 21. That embargo was on all media around the world, not just New Zealand.
