Stage Set for M32 World Championship in Chicago
Twelve amateur and professional teams have descended on Chicago, Illinois this week for the 2018 M32 World Championship - the culminating event of the global M32 Series - representing one of the most competitive fleets of the popular one-design class ever assembled.
With talent pulled from grand prix events around the world, this year's World Championship marks the largest grouping of M32's ever assembled on Chicago's stadium race course - a venue that first debuted at the 2016 Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series Chicago.
Gearing up for the M32 Worlds, seven of the teams competed in the Chicago Regatta, a three-day charity event hosted by Chicago Yacht Club. M32 World Champion, China One Ningbo, took home the win with Dan Cheresh's Extreme2 hot on their heels.
Cheresh represents the top tier of the Corinthian Fleet that represents the majority of the event. No stranger to the podium with several North American Championships under his belt, Cheresh has competed in the M32 fleet since 2016.
Also chasing the title, Jim Prendergast's Grave Digger is proving to be a formidable threat to Cheresh in the Corinthian Fleet after closing in on Extreme2 in the pre-worlds event. Other local favorites are Chicago Match Race Center's Don Wilson's Convexity, and Jennifer Wilson's Convergence.
Scattered among the fleet are athletes pulled from the world's top grand prix events including the America's Cup, and World Match Racing Tour, and Volvo Ocean Race.
Fleet racing begins at 1200 CST tomorrow, Thursday September 20, on the Chicago stadium race course.
No Racing Today At The 52 Super Series In Valencia
Very light and unstable breezes made it impossible for the Racing Committee, headed by Maria Torrijo, to get racing underway today despite several attempts to set up a course. A breeze from the north eastern gradient conflicted with a sea breeze from the south east and the resulting conditions were too weak and unstable for racing. An occasional puff at about 7 knots would get the teams hoping, but after just a few minutes it would die down again after shifting over 30 degrees left or right. Finally at 4:30 PM the AP over Alpha flag was hoisted signalling that no more racing today.
Theoretically, racing will get underway tomorrow at 1 PM, conditions permitting. Live streaming with commentary in English direct from the regatta course will be available on the websites 52superseries.com, azzurra.it and on the 52 Super Series YouTube channel.

Kick off the Caribbean regatta season with the Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week 2019
The Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week 27 Jan - 1 Feb kicks off the start of the regatta season in the southern Caribbean for 2019. Response to on line registration has been fantastic, boats are lining up to join the start line. Our professional race committee have been working hard on new courses and there is something for everyone from hotshot racers to gentlemen sailors and all those in between. There will be four days of exciting racing counting towards overall results, with a lay day half way through. With a mixture of windward and leeward courses, Grenada offers different challenges for each coast. The shifting winds on the west coast call for tactical racing, while the windier south coast offers pure exhilaration. Classes include racer, racer/cruiser 1, racer/cruiser 2, the ever elegant classics and if there is enough interest, a J24 and cruising class.
Our two host venues Camper and Nicholsons Port Louis Marina on the west coast and Secret Harbour Marina on the south coast, together with our race days sponsors: Grenada Tourism Authority, Seahawk Paints, Secret Harbour Marina and Mount Gay Rum promise exciting prizes and parties with live music every night.

Perini Navi Cup Returns To Porto Cervo
Porto Cervo, Italy.: The quays of Porto Cervo are bustling as a fleet of superyachts arrives for the seventh edition of the Perini Navi Cup, an event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with the prestigious Perini Navi shipyard.
Thursday 20 September, 12 of the 20 attending sailing yachts will cast off for the first of three scheduled days of racing. The remainder of the participating yachts, including the multi-award winning 70-metre ketch Sybaris and the 55-metre motor yacht Galileo G, will follow the racing as spectators and will take part in all of the events organised by Perini Navi to celebrate the gathering together of this great family.
The boats, which will compete under the ORCsy rating system specially designed for superyachts, will be divided into two classes: Cruiser Racer and Corinthian Spirit; with the latter sailing without spinnakers.
The Cruiser Racer class will be home to Seahawk, which placed third in the 2015 edition and at 59 metres in length is the largest yacht in the division. The Aquarius, launched in 1990, Victoria A and Silencio complete the Cruiser Racer category.
Eight Perini yachts will compete in the Corinthian division which will see the return to Costa Smeralda of the fleet's flagship, the 88-metre Maltese Falcon with its three rotating masts managing the celebrated DynaRig system, the modern evolution of the square-rig employed throughout the history of navigation. Also sailing through the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago in the Corinthian spirit will be Bayesian, Blush, Caoz 14, Spirit of C'S, Tamsen, Principessa Vaivia and Jasali II.
The first starting signal scheduled for 11.30 a.m. and north-easterly wind of up to 15 knots.
Hamble Classics - third time is even luckier

The third Hamble Classics Regatta hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club, over the weekend of 15-16 September, was another stunning success with 75 classic and spirit of tradition yachts entered for two days of racing in sunshine and breeze. Building on the success of the two previous regattas, there were entries from as far afield as Falmouth and Ipswich, with some boats returning for the intense but well-spirited racing and others simply to enjoy the fun.
With the Hamble Classics fleet as diverse as ever, from Ian Armstrong's 16 foot Herreshoff 12.5 Gloriana up to Michael Hough's 65 foot Chloe Giselle, this yacht was the largest of five Spirit yachts contesting the increasingly high profile IRC Zero class. Of the smaller boats David and Sue Pennison's new home-built Satellite caught the attention of the Concours judges, while the sight of sails being hoisted on the big classic gaffers, Aeolus, Jolie Brise, Peggy Bawn and Thalia served up a big helping of purest nostalgia.
Dovetailing neatly between two low-pressure weather systems there was more breeze than predicted for the Saturday racing, sponsored as usual by Spinlock, and less than the 20 knots that some had been expecting on Sunday, so both days delivered the finest of Solent racing conditions.
With 20 boats new to the event this year and a perfect forecast for Saturday's river finish to complete the first day's racing, the Principal Race Officer Peter Bateson gave a detailed briefing before the fleet headed out to the two start line areas, Red Line and Green Line, dividing the fleet into the larger and smaller yachts.
The gentle flood tide would deliver the fleet back to the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the smaller boats on the Green Line under the direction of Stephen Parry were sent into the river to finish under spinnaker just 200 metres south of the club's Prince Philip Yacht Haven. This included the three dayboat classes, XOD, Dragon and 6-Metres, plus the Regatta 2 class and smaller gaffers. Each of the Concours d'Elegance winners was given an engraved glass keeper prize and bottles of Joseph Perrier Champagne. The four Concours winners were:

America's Cup: Foil Cant System Revealed
The foil cant system is the foundation for the AC75 which relies on the use of twin canting T-foils, ballasted to provide righting-moment when sailing, and roll stability at low speed.
The system for the AC75 has been in design for the past six months, and is one of the standardized parts that will be supplied to each team competing in the 36th edition.

Royal St. George's George Miller is lying ninth overall at the vintage yachting Games in Copenhagen while Mark Delany is 12th after one race sailed.
It must be remembered that when the International 12-foot dinghies competed in the Olympic Games in 1920, they raced off Ostend on a huge course more suited to the 12 metre and 6 metre yachts. The wind and tide conditions were such that the event could not be completed within the allocated time. In those days all the 12 footers raced with a crew of two.
Today at the Royal Danish Yacht Club and Hellerup Sailing Club, the 19 competitors could decide if they would sail with a crew of one or two crew.
In race one, on 18th September the wind was blowing about 22 knots in strong sunshine and flat water, and the racing was dominated by the experienced Dutch teams.
The racing was interesting as the boats which had two crew performed better upwind, while the single-handed boats did best downwind. -- Vincent Delany in Afloat

He has seen extensive success in different size boats, having previously been a World Champion in both the 18ft Skiff & International 14 Classes, and he has also won National and European titles in the International Moth Class. Offshore, Robert was part of the transatlantic record-breaking team onboard Comanche and has a number of other records to his name including Fastnet records, both monohull and multihull, and the Caribbean 600. Robert also has extensive multihull experience, winning the Extreme Sailing Series in 2007, finishing second in 2008, and more recently sailing onboard both MOD70 & D35's.
Following the conclusion of the recent Volvo Ocean Race, Robert has chosen Sydney as his home base where he will be joining the North Sails team in Australia. He will be providing customer service and consultancy relevant to his wealth of experience from Moths, One Design keel boats, IRC rated boats, Maxis, up through yachts built for offshore racing.

Hommage to Eric Tabarly to mark the 20th anniversary of his disappearance
The Grand Pavois La Rochelle pays tribute to Eric Tabarly. For the occasion, visitors will be able to discover the famous Pen Duick III, Eric Tabarly's boat that won the most races, meet the members of the Eric Tabarly Association, participate in "Tabarly, de memoire" autograph sessions in the presence of Vincent Guigueno, and watch the film "Tabarly, Coureurs d'Oceans" by Laurent Cadoret and Dominique Pipat at La Rochelle Maritime Museum.

A third wave of tariffs announced Monday by the Trump administration will impose a 10 per cent tariff on an additional US$200b of Chinese goods are set to take effect 24 September, followed by a 25 per cent increase at the start of 2019, have the boating industry and other manufacturers sounding additional alarm bells.
As with the first two rounds of tariffs, recreational boating is hard hit with a wide range of marine products impacted. One bright spot: the final list of goods impacted by this round of Section 301 tariffs - which was reduced from a total of 6,031 to 5,745 products, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).
China announced on Tuesday that they will retaliate with tariffs of 5 or 10 per cent on $60 billion worth of US exports, including boats, starting next week. This makes China the fourth market to retaliate against the USrecreational boating industry during the global trade war.

Only a few years removed from college, David Pedrick had achieved a career milestone in designing Courageous, the 12 Metre class yacht that Ted Hood skippered to victory in the 1974 America's Cup.
"I saw that through, supervising construction and being on hand throughout the entire sailing trials and racing of that cup summer as sort of chief boat-keeper," Pedrick recalled in an interview Tuesday. "If something happened where I had to do something else after that, I think my appetite would have been fulfilled. Fortunately, that wasn't the end of it. I could keep on from there."
More than 200 projects, including 100 yacht builds later, Pedrick has made his mark in the industry and the City-by-the-Sea with Pedrick Yacht Designs. Recognition from industry peers is common, but he is about to accept a different type of honor.
Pedrick is one of three inductees into the Rhode Island Design Hall of Fame this year. Established in 2014, the hall recognizes "leaders in the Rhode Island design community for their contributions to the industry on local, national and international levels," according to DESIGNxRI, the nonprofit organization that runs the hall and whose mission is to create an environment conducive to designers' success in the Ocean State. There will be an induction ceremony Thursday night in Providence.

Berlin-based private equity CMP Capital Management will become the new owner of Bavaria Yachtbau, the German-based builder of motorboats, sailboats and catamarans announced on Saturday.
Once recognised as one of the industry's most industrialised series boatbuilders, Bavaria fell into administration in April this year, however, was able to strike a temporary deal to maintain operations to fulfil a sizable order book obtained on the back of new model launches in 2017-18.
CMP will acquire Bavaria Yachtbau and its French-based subsidiary Bavaria Catamarans SAS from Oaktree Capital and Anchorage Capital, which bought the business in October 2009 for approximately €300m including a cash injection of €55m and the previous owner Bain Capital's write-down of debt facilities totalling about €960m at the time.
Today's restructuring deal includes all 550 employees at the Giebelstadt, German plant and all 250 employees at the catamaran production facility in Rochefort, France. Bavaria acquired the French business in 2014, formerly Nautitech Catamarans, to address the thriving catamaran segment.
