Opening Day at 2018 Melges 32 World League in Cagliari

Cagliari, Italy: The final stage of the 2018 Melges 32 World League officially got underway today on the spectacular regatta race course at the foot of Sella del Diavolo, the heart of Cagliari.
The conditions were perfect with fourteen knots of breeze at 200 degrees. Two races were completed and the great balance that reigns in this One Design Class prevailed.
Organized by Yacht Club Cagliari in collaboration with Melges Europe, the winner of opening day on countback goes to Germany's Fritz Homann at the helm of WILMA (Nico Celon, tactician).
Thanks to a strong 2-4 daily scoreline, World Champion Pavel Kuznetsov racing TAVATUY (Evgeny Neugodnikov, tactician) sits in second place, sharing equal points with Homann.
The next two days will provide him his best chances for overtaking either Balstrero or Onorato.
Martin Reintjes and tactician Gabriele Benussi aboard CAPIRINHA currently lead the Corinthian Division, happily seated fifth overall.
The Melges World League is supported by Moby, Tirrenia, Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, North Sails, Toremar, Norda, Lavazza, Rigoni di Asiago and Melges Europe.

36th America’s Cup Overture at Cowes
On Friday, 31 August the America’s Cup will be back in Cowes where it all began in 1851 The Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand and Challenger of Record - Luna Rossa, as well as New York Yacht Club American Magic and INEOS TEAM UK will gather collectively for the first time to kick off the next edition of the sailing’s most historic and iconic event.
But this is an on-shore event, so do not get too excited - But there might be a fly-past by the INEOS Team UK test boat to show-off their progress ?
The 36th America’s Cup Overture is where the race area for the 2021 Match will be announced.
The teams are also due to receive the drawings of the one design mast and the specifications for the mast's standing rigging.
Each team will build their own masts. The rigging will be supplied by ETNZ.
It is not expected that any official news about the 2019 AC World Series will be released on Friday as the Protocol gives them until 31 March 2019 to announce those details.
There might well be updates from the teams about their plans, and there is to be a new America’s Cup logo announced.
The 36th America’s Cup Overture precedes the 2018 America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and black tie dinner at the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Future Fibres: the chosen supplier of one design rigging for the 36th AC

Bike4Bart
Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and Philippa York, one of Britain’s most successful cyclists of all time, are among those riding in Bike4Bart in Dorset on Sunday 2nd September!
We are delighted to announce that in just under a week, Philippa York will be joining British Cycling Performance Director Stephen Park OBE, Sir Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy OBE and participating in Bike4Bart! Philippa York is a Scottish journalist, a former professional road racing cyclist and one of Britain’s most successful cyclists of all time!
As the Andrew Simpson Foundation’s inaugural event, the Bike4Bart Charity Sportive will take place on Sunday 2nd September 2018 and start from the iconic Olympic venue of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Portland.
Riders have a choice of tackling three different routes ranging from 26-95 miles with varied terrain and breath-taking panoramas of the Dorset coast and with wider family activities on offer, it’s an event for all ages and abilities!
All proceeds from the entry fee go back into the Andrew Simpson Foundation to enable the Charity to continue to increase participation and improve lives through their five Key Charitable Activities: Bart’s Bash, Research, Community Sailing Programmes, Volunteer Training and Grants.

Some days you know you’re going to be lucky to get any wind. On the south coast, for example, when the pressure chart indicates a light northerly gradient and the temperature over the land is high enough to suck in a sea breeze, northerly fights southerly. All too often, neither wins and sailors are definitely the losers.
That’s pretty much what everyone was expecting on the fifth day of Zhik Poole Week. The flags in Parkstone Yacht Club's dinghy park initially fluttered to a zephyr from the north before hanging limply as boats started to launch at around 13:30. But then there was a faint stirring from the south. Although any sun was mostly milky and the weather far from scorching, was enough of a sea breeze going to fill in?
The fleets starting from the Parkstone Platform - Darts, XODs, Wayfarers, Handicap (fast and slow), Dolphins and Shrimpers - wafted gently back and forth while Bob Jennings, facing the unenviable task of managing them, worked out where they could go.
He gave the Wayfarers what seemed like an adventurous course in the conditions - a shortish beat, followed by a reach to RoRo (whose name is a clue to its position) and another beat to Piccadilly off the western end of Brownsea Island.
In the XODs, John Edmonds in Skiffle and Crispin Tombs in Ariel took the top two places. Edmonds led the fleet most of the way and extended further when many following boats misjudged the cross-current on the run and ended up fighting it to the leeward mark.
All this action centred around the Parkstone Platform was in contrast to a distinct lack of action in the harbour’s Top Triangle. There was nothing David Lush, race officer on the committee boat, could do after a couple of completely windless hours but send the fleets home.

Le Trophee des Muticoques
Created in 1980 at the initiative of ESIEA in partnership with La Société Nautique de La Trinite / Mer (SNT) and the National Union of Multihulls (UNM), the Multihulls Trophy marked a key moment in ocean racing. . On the initiative of Marc Guillemot and Dominic Bourgeois, this rendezvous will be reborn in late August 2018 to gather the maximum of multiple hull sailboats just over two months from the start of the Route du Rhum.
From the first edition of the Multihulls Trophy in May 1980, they were twenty-two to take the start of the four races run in three days in the bay of Quiberon: ten racing multihulls including the future winner of the OSTAR (English transatlantic), the American Phil Weld on his trimaran Moxie , Eric Loizeau winner of this first meeting on Gauloises IV or Eric Tabarly on the Paul Ricard foiler which will be the first, the same year, to break the historic record of the crossing of the Atlantic owned by the schooner Atlantic led by the legendary Charlie Barr (1905) ...
Multihull Trophy, day 3. Alain Gautier's entry on Sensation Ocean (ex-Foncia) came to spice up the game this morning on the side of the big multis, launched on a 38-mile course to Belle-Ile. The decidedly fast Formula 40 Irvi (Jacques Vapillon and Christophe Boucault) dominated the Group 3 debates in real time on both rounds of the day and won the second in compensation. And if Acapella-Soreal-Proludic (Charlie Capelle) was awarded the first race, Irvi's men retain the general tonight. In Diam 24 OD, a great tie today as each of the two crews has signed a victory. The Multihulls Trophy has also seen many of the old pillars of the circuit find their element and attend the afternoon races in the bay of Quiberon ...
On this third day of competitive festivities (and vice versa), the breeze has once again emerged late - holidays oblige - allowing a smooth entry for the crews. 7 knots this morning, strengthening gradually to reach 13 to 15 knots during the second round of the Multi 2000 and Diam 24 OD. In the first, the Formula 40 confirmed his domination in real time in both races, while compensated the victory went to Charlie Capelle (Acapella-Soreal-Proludic) ahead of Loïck Peyron in the first leg - as well as the passes weapons on the side of the "little yellows" were nothing short of intense. At Diam 24 OD, Cyrille Legloahec (Batistyl) was able to qualify the Beijaflore wave by winning a race ... even if in general the situation remains unchanged.

Grand Soleil’s new Custom 80-footer marks both a significant step up and a major new collaboration for this experienced and successful Italian yard ‘Che
Speed, power, beauty. That is the essence of the Grand Soleil 80 Custom, the first of a series of custom and semi-custom projects to emerge from an ambitious new endeavour by Cantiere del Pardo.
The new facility in Fano, Italy, announced by Cantiere del Pardo in May 2017, is about to bear its first, rather impressive, fruit. The Grand Soleil Custom Yard will build special one-off projects too large and specialised to be handled by the main Cantiere del Pardo yard where Grand Soleil’s production yachts are built. In a partnership with the Adria Sail shipyard, a yard synonymous with high-tech custom boats in Italy, the construction of the new 80ft high-performance racer-cruiser was managed by Adria Sail’s master builder, Maurizio Testuzza, while Giovanni Ceccarelli took care of design, working closely with Cantiere del Pardo and the boat’s owner.
‘Cantiere del Pardo commissioned Ceccarelli Yacht Design for the naval architecture, exterior and interior styling for the new Grand Soleil 80,’ says Ceccarelli. ‘I was given a design brief, drawn up together with the owner and his consultant, Paolo Semeraro, for an 80ft highperformance custom-built sailboat for cruising and for racing in IRC or ORCi against other similar racercruiser yachts. Cantiere del Pardo wanted to explore the possibility of building a limited series of these yachts, updated from time-to-time to reflect an owner’s particular requirements. In the brief, certain basic parameters were fixed for this boat. It specified light displacement of about 33 tonnes and a keel weight of roughly 12 tonnes.’
For the hull, Ceccarelli gave himself a head start by unleashing the full analytical arsenal available to him and by narrowing the design options based on known performance. ‘Extensive use was made of CFD and VPP to design the hull and appendages, and the hull and structures were all validated by Italian structural designers Advanced Mechanical Solutions with FEM verifications. The brief drove me towards a hull form with high righting moment and a considerable beam. I’ve designed similar boats and the best five were CFD-tested, simulating a range of sailing conditions and wind angles, without appendages. Then we CFD-tested the best again, with a range of appendages added.

Just months after a team of shareholders took control of the business, South Africa’s Southern Wind Shipyard (SWS) has been commissioned to build the new RP Nauta 100’ custom yacht for an experienced yachtsman.
The owner had initiated the design process of the 30m high-performance cruiser in 2017 with Nauta Design and soon after with Reichel Pugh Yacht Design. SWS, builder of performance sailing yachts from 90ft-120ft, was selected for its construction among other reputable shipyards.
The new SWS custom 100ft yacht will be a 63-tonne full carbon racer cruiser with a lifting keel (max draft 6.1m) A sleek and elegant flush deck will be combined with a large sail area for performance.
Jim Pugh, president at Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design, says the company is pleased to be collaborating once more with Nauta Design and SWS on this project. “The build of the R/P90, the first custom yacht for SWS with interior styling by Nauta Yachts, was an overwhelming success.
The yacht is already under construction at Southern Wind’s facility and is scheduled for delivery in spring 2020.
