Swiss seize success from clutches of the Danes in Cardiff final
Having climbed the ranks throughout the Extreme Sailing Series Cardiff Act, Alinghi - the Swiss kings of foiling - seized victory from the clutches of SAP Extreme Sailing Team on the final day of the event.

In a nail-biting finish to an incredible four days of racing, Arnaud Psarofaghis, Yves Detrey, Nicolas Charbonnier, Bryan Mettraux and Timothe Lapauw headed into the all-important double points final race just one point ahead of their Danish counterparts. A third place finish saw them crush SAP Extreme Sailing Team's hopes of an Act victory, securing Alinghi's fourth Act win of the season - the first time the Swiss have won in Cardiff in the six years that they've competed in the Welsh capital.

It was a gutting end to what looked like an otherwise promising competition for SAP Extreme Sailing Team. Having led the regatta since the first day, the Danes were hopeful for a taste of the glory. However, an OCS (over the starting line early) on the final race cost them dearly, relegating them to the back of the fleet for much of the race. They eventually crossed the line in fourth, securing them second place on the Act podium.

Giles Redpath's Lombard 46 Pata Negra is the overall winner of the 2018 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Pata Negra scored the best corrected time for yachts racing under the IRC Rating Rule for the 1,805 nautical mile non-stop race.

Pata Negra: Giles Redpath, James Crampton, Chris Hanson, William Harris, Oliver Heer, Antoine Magre, David Thomson, Richard Tricker and Donald Wilks.

Phil Sharp, skipper of Class40 Imerys Clean Energy and crew Julien Pulvé, Pablo Santurdé and Sam Matson have entered the record books with a new Guinness World Record, following ratification from the World Speed Sailing Record Council ("WSSRC") for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. The team broke the record time for boats 40ft and under by some 15 hours in an elapsed time of 8 days 4 hrs 14 mins 49 Secs. Sharp commented on this remarkable achievement:

Ullman Sails St. Maarten is a full service loft on the island of St. Maarten (Dutch side) in the Caribbean, offering services that include sail repairs & alterations, new sails & all types of canvas products.

We are currently looking for a qualified sail maker for our upcoming season from November 2018 to May 2019.

The applicant would be responsible for all types of sail repairs & alterations, removing & re-installing sails. The fitting of new sails & U-Stack covers. Experience in canvas work would be a plus.

Stalking The Wolf
With just under 70 nautical miles to race to the turn southwards at Wolf Rock the four leaders of Stage 1 are still in close company as they sail into their second night at sea. Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) still holds the nominal lead from Sébastien Simon (Bretagne CMB Performance). Still working upwind there is now some 17 nautical miles of lateral separation, north south, between Corentin Douget making 3.8kts closest to the Devon shore in seventh position with Pierre Quiroga ninth, and a breakway trio including Thierry Chabagny and Erwan Tabarly who have opted to go offshore

The leading pack are more or less in the middle as speeds drop away in the fading breeze. Brit Alan Roberts is 12th and has been slightly slower than the leading group at 5.5 nautical miles behind the pacemakers. Hugh Brayshaw is further offshore and about 1.5nms behind Roberts.

According to our reporter on the Etoile support boat this evening, the passage of Start Point this afternoon was made in 15kts and a chunky leftover swell, watery sunshine but still remaining chilly after the passage of the front. Pierre Quiroga (Skipper Espoir CEM) reported by VHF 'The box marked 'first night' was well and truly checked'

Meteo France say the high pressure ridge will arrive in the western channel Tuesday morning and so may pretty much stop the fleet before the passage of the perennial favourite Le Figaro mark. Aboard the sailors are still in foul weather gear although since the 1900hrs safety call lifejackets are no longer mandatory.

Rookie Calliste Antoine (Immonew) became the second Rookie and the sixth skipper to abandon Stage 1 late this afternoon due to problems with his halyards and losing his heavy spinnaker.

Checkmate XV Makes It A Victory Double At Half Ton Classics Cup 2018

Nieuwpoort, Belgium: With a convincing win in the final spectacular race run in glorious sunshine and big seas off Nieuwpoort, Checkmate XV (1985 Humphreys) and her crew of owner David Cullen, Darragh O'Connor, Nin O'Leary, Jonathan Sargent, Aidan Beggan, Niki Potterton and Frank Rothchild of the Howth Yacht Club claimed a well deserved overall victory in the 2018 Half Ton Classics Cup. For Checkmate XV this was the third time she had earnt the right to have her name engraved on the Half Ton Classics Cup (equalling the legendary Swuzzlebubble's record) and for David and his team is was their second win, the first also being here in Nieuwpoort in 2015.

The final race was a cracker, sailed in a 14-16 knot westerly, huge seas and glorious sunshine.

At the finish Checkmate XV took the race by 52 seconds, with Harmony second from Per Elisa and General Tapioca fourth. Sadly a technical issue with the committee boat's anchor made a second race impossible and so the championship closed with eight races completed.

In the Vintage IOR Division Albert Pierrard & An Callens' A+ (1985 Nissen) had a superb last race loving every minute of the downwind sleigh rides, with Waverider second by 47 seconds and Nicolas Lejeune's Skippy's Ton (1984 Briand) third. At the Prize Giving it was confirmed that the first ever winner of the new Vintage IOR Trophy was the local Belgian boat Waverider sailed by owner Jaques Lemaire, Michael Gendebien, Thibout de Kenchous, Michel Lefebure, Stephove Putseys, Winnie Berteloot and Pascal Aboosha. Ivan Van Burm's Fantasy (1980 Humphreys) took second place by a mere half point from A+ in third.

Alongside the main trophies two further special prizes were also announced. The first was the Half Ton Classics Cup Corinthian Trophy, which goes to the top performing all amateur crew and was won by Rampage (1985 Briand) sailed by owner John Hicks, Rod Wootton, Will Parkinson, Mike Chamberlain, Becky Leach, Jane Hicks and Joe Cable from Cornwall, UK.

The final prize presented is always the Spirit of Half Ton Trophy and it goes to the team who best embody that certain hard to define something that sums up the true heart of the Half Ton Class. For rescuing and totally rebuilding their boat against all the odds after she was almost completely destroyed when a crane fell on her some three years ago, this year the Spirit of Half Ton Trophy was presented to Nicolas Lejeune and Waverider. Waverider is a truly special Half Tonner; designed by Laurie Davidson in 1977 she won two consecutive Half Ton Cups in 1978 off Poole and in 1979 off Scheveningen. Her reconstruction has been a work of love and dedication by Nicolas and his friends and family, with the support of boat builders and fellow Half Ton sailors Tom Florizoone (Red Cloud) and Ian Van Burm (Fantasy). -- Fiona B rown

Racing Services Manager

The RYA is seeking to appoint an individual to lead, manage and provide strategic oversight to its Racing Services Team, which covers three main areas; (1) Regulatory & Technical; (2) Yachting Keelboats, Offshore and Universities Racing; and (3) Events.

We are looking for an individual to become our Subject Matter Expert in relation to MCA, World Sailing and other relevant bodies legislation, rules and regulations and to work as our representative and negotiator regarding technical legislation, standards and other regulations at National and International level. In addition the Racing Services Manager would work in developing initiatives and programmes aimed at attracting & developing new keelboat sailors, and coordinating bids to relevant Event Organisers, such as UK Sport and World Sailing, with regards to securing key International events and funding.

Interested?
You should have the ability to understand and interpret complex information (i.e. rules, regulations and legislation), with the ability to communicate this to others in a clear and concise way, as well as be able to effectively build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You should also have demonstrable experience in effectively negotiating and resolving conflict as well as experience of leading and developing a team. Current knowledge and understanding of World Sailing regulations and committee rules & regulations would be an advantage.

40th J/24 World Championship
Riva del Garda, Italy: Lake Garda lived up to its "bucket list" reputation on the opening day of the J/24 World Championship in Riva del Garda, Italy. Eighty-nine teams from 14 countries (Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden and United States) descended on the picturesque lake for the 40th edition of the Championship. With sunny skies and breeze at 10-15 knots, American Will Welles' Kaster got out of the gate with the early advantage, posting 2,5,2 for nine points in the three races. Hungarian Tomai Bala'zs' J.Bond 037 started the day strong with 1,2, but a 13 in race three left him with 16 points for second place. Travis Odenbach's Honeybadger of the USA rests in third place with 29 points.

Bala'zs opened the regatta with a victory, ahead of Welles and Italian Ignazio Bonanno's La Superba. Keith Whittemore's Furio, USA, took the next battle, as Bala'zs dropped to second and Duncan McCarthy's Madeleine of Great Britain put another nation on the leaderboard. The final contest saw McCarthy, Welles and Whittemore comprise the top three.

Racing continues through Friday from Fraglia Vela Riva del Garda.

If by a man's works shall we know him, you're already well acquainted with Gianni Cariboni. His company has been involved with Wally Yachts since its inception, supplies all the Volvo Ocean 65 hydraulics, and has been involved in every America's Cup cycle since 2000. He's just returned bronzed and relaxed after a holiday in Spain and he's already back on the case. 'When I got back this morning I spoke with the New Zealand America's Cup team, with Luna Rossa and with other customers. The factory is running well. We've just started testing a new system for the Solaris yard and we're also delivering a very interesting system for Vismara's Nacira V69, a canting and lifting keel - and it's nearly Friday so everybody's happy.'

This family-run company's position at the apex of marine hydraulics has a long backstory, peppered with groundbreaking innovations, but it all began very modestly. 'My first job was teaching, but I was sailing all the time and in 1972 I got a job as director of production for Canclini, building 4,500 aluminium masts a year for Ton classes and European production boats. I left the company in 1984 and opened a design office. The following year I opened a small workshop making aluminium daggerboards for multihulls,' Gianni continues, 'and, in 1986, we made our first aluminium mast, for a C-Class catamaran. Our first hydraulic components were built for the 36m ketch Magdalus III in 1987, two big stainless steel power packs, one for the captive winches and another for the backstay, vang and outhaul.'
