Contributions welcome, send to Tim Healy Wins J24 Worlds Strong offshore winds disturbed the sailors during the two first races of the 2010 J24 Worlds in Malmo, Sweden. With numerous broaches and capsizes many sailors broke equipment causing them disappointing results. With three days and six races completed, Tim Healy moved to the top of the leaderboard after picking up another race win and second place in race six. Healy repeated this performance on the fourth day of racing to consolidate his lead. With one more race day to come Ian Southworth (GBR) held second place. Two final races were sailed on the final day of the 2010 J24 World Championship and Tim Healy and his tem of G Borges, M McClintock, D Rabin and J Mollicone were not to be beaten, wrapping up their series with another second place finish. The final bullet went to Southworth, the only skipper to really get close to Healy, who finished in the silver medal position seven points behind the Americans. Third overall went to the Italian team skippered by Andrea Casale. Final top five 1. Tim Healy / G Borges / M McClintock / D Rabin / JMollicone, USA, 24 points Round The Ragged Rock Jonny Malbon's IMOCA 60, Artemis Ocean Racing, has 77 miles to go to reach the top of the course and will round the remote island alone, as they have been for much of this race. On board is Olympic 49er medallist, Simon Hiscocks who is very much at home racing a 49er or an extreme 40, but offshore racing is a very new concept to him. (See Simon's video blog sevenstar.rorc.org/newsblogsphotos.html ) Artemis Ocean Racing is going well and 48 hours into the race they are second overall under IRC behind Piet Vroon's Ker 46, Tonnerre de Breskens. Early leaders on handicap, the British Keelboat Academy's TP52, John Merricks II, are now third overall but sailing further offshore and look to be getting into more breeze. In IRC Two, Adrian Lower's Swan 44, Selene, is top of the class and has opened up a nine-mile lead on Harry Heijst's S&S 41, Winsome. Driving rain is sweeping across the racecourse but the good news is that the severe weather predicted for Thursday may well be further south than expected. It was a tough night and it has been a hard race. Especially as we have had many sail changes, so we have had very little sleep but the crew are all in good spirits. We are now just 25 miles from Muckle Flugga and about 10 miles off the Scottish coast, we are looking forward to getting around the most northern point on the course and heading back down and we are delighted to be in the lead." Skipper Ben Ainslie pointed to their team's heightened levels of confidence, cohesion and the fact that for the first time of this Audi MedCup Circuit season they are sailing with exactly the same crew as they had at the previous TP52 regatta as key components of today's strong opening. They made good starts and then capitalised with smart tactics reinforced by good boatspeed and handling. With the mainly easterly breeze topping 16 knots in the first race, and the second enjoying slightly gentler breezes, both times there were opportunities for the early leader to bank their gains and extend on the chasing pack, especially when the strong current was used to maximum advantage. The GP42 Series Practice Race was won by Jose Maria Ponce's Islas Canarias Puerto Calero team, the five boats being well tested in the brisk 12-15 knots breeze sailing a full course with three windward legs. Points racing for the GP42 Series begins tomorrow when the Islas Canarias crew will be looking to repeat their practice race success and repair the one point penalty they were docked for arriving late at the venue. The day started with sun and wind from the East. The AP flag went up to postpone racing until the westerly filled in the bay. Racing started at 3 PM after a general recall. It was a nerve raking race with light wind and event leadership changing through the race. Egor Terpigorev (RUS) won the last race with Oliver Tweddell (AUS) second and Luke Lawrence third. Fourth place in the last race goes to the fleet younger RJ Bay who at the age of 16 is looking forward more Finn racing! Luke Lawrence takes the title, three points from European Junior champion Ioannis Mitakis (GRE) and Oliver Twedelle (AUS). The Silver Cup is the first Finn event for the 19 years old Australian who has started sailing the Finn only four months ago. Most Junior sailors will stay in San Francisco to race the Finn Gold Cup scheduled next week. "My objective is to make the top 30" says Lawrence. "This is where I finished in the Finn Europeans last May. The Audi Sailing Team Germany debuted in June 2010, at Kieler Woche, just down the coast from where the Extreme Sailing Series will be held. Bringing together the very best sailors from across the Olympic sailing disciplines, Paralympics and youth squads, the Team is preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London - a setup very much modeled on the successful formula applied by Britain's successful Olympic team. Johannes Polgar will helm the Audi Sailing Team Germany Extreme 40 joined by his Star class crew and America's Cup veteran Markus Koy, 49er sailor Lorenz Huber, Star Class sailor Timo Jacobs and Paralympics Gold Medallist (Sydney) and seven times World Champion Heiko Kroeger. The Extreme Sailing Series Kiel starts on Thursday 26 August with a press conference at 1.30, followed by racing each and every afternoon from 2pm with the public village opening up from Friday 27th. Strong winds are forecast for the weekend Ramsgate Week The IRC Regatta, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, concluded with the fleet competing for the historic Gold Cup which was decided on an aggregate of the two races for the day. The Gold Cup, which was first presented in 1903, is a prestigious trophy and one in which crews compete eagerly for. This year was no exception, but it was Richard Matthews' Humphreys 42 Oystercatcher XXVI who claimed an unassailable victory, winning both races overall. Local boat, Stillelo sailed by John Barrett and Paul Woodward took second place with Robbie & Pippa Stewart's Stewart 109 Booty! from Royal Burnham Yacht Club coming third. In Class 1, Oystercatcher XXVI and Manta Sailing from Nieuwpoort were battling it out to win the class. But it was Oystercatcher XXVI who won the day and the IRC Regatta for Class 1, with Michel Lefebvre's First 40 Manta Sailing second and Stilleto third. Phillipe Bourgeois from Dunquerque returned to Ramsgate Week for his twelfth year and once again ruled the Class 2 fleet, winning six out of seven races with his First 34.7 Marine Diffusion Dunkerque. John Allen's X302 Antix from Whitby Yacht club took a commendable second place with Richard Sparrow's J92 Who's to no third. The Class 3 fleet was dominated by the Half Tonners with Philippe Pilate's General Tapioca, Michael Kershaw Chimp and Alain Delvaux Waverider jostling for the top three positions all week. Local boat, Scallywag 3, was tough competition, but it was General Tapioca who won the Class, with Chimp second and Waverider third. RS500 World Championship The start was bang on time again and the fleet was all 1/4 of a boat length behind the line. Perfect. Alex Taylor and Bryan Mobbs headed left - no surprise then that Tim Wilkins & Heather Martin were there as well. For the first 2 laps of 4 they were rarely more than 2 boat lengths apart with Wilkins and Martin working hard to keep ahead. At 11.43 it was all over at the front and the World Champions had been decided - Tim Wilkins and Heather Martin. Leading Ladies team are Annika Ellerbrock & Anne Werner from Germany who had there own pitched battle with Dutch girls Stephanie & Chantalle Grootscholten by a mere 3 point margin. The first Youth team were Dutch pairing Hansebas Meijer & Fedor Couvert. Hugo Tucker and Tim Collino certainly deserve an honourable mention for a fine effort at ages 13 and 14 respectively. Tim Wilkins / Heather Martin, GBR, 9.0 points Event site: www.rssailing.org/rs500 Anne-Claire Le Berre Wins St Quay International Women Match Race The final day of racing in St. Quay Portrieux, France, saw light and shifty conditions all day for the semis and finals. The four semi-finalists were decided after another beautiful day where nine flights were sailed to complete the third and fourth round robins) in 8-14 knots of shifty breeze under partly cloudy skies. In the first semi-final, Anne-Claire Le Berre (FRA) defeated the Spanish team skippered by Silvia Roca after a real tussle, eventually taking the crucial fifth match to win 3-2. Julie Bossard (FRA) also faced a Spanish skipper in the second semi-final in which she despatched Tamara Echegoyen 3-1. This lined up an all-Spanish petit-final and an all-French final. Silvia Roca made short work or Echegoyen, winning two matches back to back to take third place overall. The final between Le Berre and Bossard was not so clinical. Bossard won the first two races and was leading on the final run of the third. It looked like victory was hers but Bossard pulled back to win the crucial third race and then the next two as well to finish the event as champion. -- ISAF, sailing.org Final Results www.snsqp.fr Short Handed Race Coaching Weekend September 25 - 26 Incredibly, 50% of the attendee s of this weekend went on to compete with great success in the 2010 Two-handed Round Britain & Ireland Race. Brian's co- coaches fared particularly well with Pip Hare winning IRC overall and Paul Peggs achieving 2nd in the Class 40 fleet. With a successful start behind them, Brian and his team will be running regular coaching and training sessions as part of the creation of a brand new Short Handed Sailing Centre at Haslar Marina in the Solent. The centre has the support of marina owners Dean and Reddyhoff, who are offering discounted berthing for members. The base is already home to performance short handed racing classes, including Open 60, Class 40 and Figaro and a mini transat, however the centre is open to any dedicated short handed sailor regardless of their class of boat. Brian's vision is to create a short-handed community at Haslar where sailors can prepare their boats, train, race, benefit from coaching and advice, and take advantage of discounts offered on a variety of marine products and equipment. The second Coaching Weekend has been organised for 25th and 26th September, with a programme to include practice manoeuvres with video debrief, 'a sail trim clinic', racing scenarios, an opportunities to sail with RYA qualified keelboat race coaches onboard. Coaching will 'streamed' to allow sailors of all experience and backgrounds to benefit. It's a perfect fit for what we are looking to achieve here." -- www.royal-southern.co.uk --------------------------- Southampton City Council in the UK is considering its options following the announcement by Palmer Johnson that it had put its development project of the former VT naval shipyard on hold. The Wisconsin-based shipyard last week said that it was shutting down its operations in nearby Hythe, and laying off 110 workers. But Palmer Johnson president Mike Kelsey also told IBI that it intended to develop the VT yard when demand for superyachts picked up. Kelsey said the company was in discussion with development agency SEEDA "to develop the Woolston site when the need arises". A Palmer Johnson spokesman, according to a story in today's Southern Daily Echo, said if "things go well" it could be on the VT site in 18 months to two years "building yachts". SEEDA had forecast 800 new jobs after Palmer Johnson developed the property as a superyacht facility. --------------------------- Marindepan/Skanstull Marin has joined Interboat, a Swedish chain of marine dealerships with a total turnover of more than €50m. Interboat is now represented by 15 dealers throughout Sweden. The move also strengthens Interboat's position in the Stockholm area, an important region for Swedish boating and sales. Marindepan has three major stores in the Swedish capital. The sales and purchasing organisation now represents more than 40 boat and engine brands. In addition to shared purchasing, Interboat companies also use the same Internet platform, coordinated marketing, catalogues and development for member companies. -- Lars-Ake Redeen, IBI News, www.ibinews.com --------------------------- Jon Pridham is the new managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven on the UK's Isle of Wight. Pridham joins the company from Porto Montenegro, where he spent one year as marina manager. He also worked for nine years at Gunwharf Quays Marina on Britain's south coast. In his new role, Pridham will lead the Isle of Wight marina and its Events Centre, helping to raise its profile within the marine and event industry. Located in the Solent, Cowes Yacht Haven is one of the UK's most popular sailing destinations. The marina is home to a number of well-known sailing events, including Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race. --------------------------- Island Packet Yachts in the US has appointed Hafele Yacht Center as its new distributor for Germany. Headquartered in Waldeck, and with offices in Hamburg, Hafele Yacht Center has been in business since 1999 and specialises in cruising sailboats. The company will introduce the Island Packet range at Hanseboot in November. Founded in 1979 by Bob Johnson, Island Packet Yachts builds classically styled cruisers from an 11,500sq m production facility in Largo, Florida.
