Louise Morton Wins Ladies Day Trophy At Cowes Week
Accomplished sailor Louise Morton has won the 2010 Ladies Day Trophy award at Cowes Week; one of the UK's longest running sporting events and the world's best known sailing regatta. Now in its fifth year, the Ladies Day Trophy celebrates the achievements and contributions of women in sailing.
Three times winner of the Women's Open Keelboat Championship, Louise truly deserves this award for her dedication to the sport. As well as racing competitively, Louise has spent the past five years reviving the Quarter Ton class, with such success that in the last Quarter Ton Cup there were 35 entries. She has also campaigned her own boat, Espada, at or near the front of the fleet with a crew composed entirely of girls.
"Over the last decade there has been a marked increase in female participation at Cowes Week with the number of female skippers leaping by 150 per cent since 2002, says Stuart Quarrie, CEO Cowes Week Limited. "Our Ladies Day Trophy is in recognition of the outstanding contribution, commitment, or achievement of women in sailing - from the Corinthian sailor and those overcoming difficulties in order to succeed in sailing, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges".
Paul Cambell-James Clings On To The Top Spot
After the morning's offshore race - won by Groupe Edmond de Rothschild - the predicted cold front swept through The Solent, unleashing a couple of downpours on the crowds - before the clouds broke and the sun reappeared along with a brisk northerly breeze. It was perfect racing conditions and the stage was set for some of the most exhilarating racing the Cowes crowd had seen this week. Six of the 8 boats including Veolia Environnement, Groupama and Team GAC Pindar claimed a race win this afternoon - their first of the regatta - along with Roman Hagara's Red Bull Extreme Sailing.
Today was about timing the starts right - arriving bang on the line at full pelt - as Golding explained: "It was all about the starts and we found a good place to be in and it was going well, but we had other boats piling in and I hate seeing collisions. We had a little bump at the bottom mark and I don't like to see that. Generally, we are clinging on to that podium position, I know we are close and we have to have a good day tomorrow."
Groupe Edmond de Rothschild has come within 5 points of Ecover Sailing Team - a penalty in race 26, relegated them to 8th but the team managed to finish in the top half of the fleet in most races to hold their third place overall.
Loick Peyron had a day he and the Oman Sail Masirah crew would probably rather forget. They were fighting but getting nowhere and in the penultimate race a collision with one of The Solent marks put a crack in the hull. They rapidly headed for the dock but a bit of gaffer tape application had them back out racing for the final race of the day - a good effort but to no avail, finishing 4th overall on 166 points.
Beyou In The Lead, High Winds and Rain on the Menu
Sun, warm weather and light wind are all just a memory for the 45 skippers participating to the 41st Solitaire du Figaro. The fleet crossed the high pressure ridge fairly early and is now preparing for the second night at sea, on their plate strong breeze, autumnal weather and rain. SN1 mark could be rounded soon.
The worries of crossing the high pressure ridge are only a memory for the skippers who left Gijon to Brest for the 385 long second leg. The fleet is well spread out over a 17 miles large area and the coming hours will be crucial to judge whether the best option was East, West or centre, that is to say the shortest one to the target. By now the more easterly route seems to have paid off but it will not be until the SN1 mark that the games will be revealed. All the boats are keeping impressive average speeds and the mix of good strategy, physical strength and good manoeuvring will make a difference.
"It could well be that the leaders will round the mark around 10 p.m." said Race Director Jacques Caraes "It's going to be a fairly exerting night and I advised all the skipper to wear their lifejackets, personal Epirb and a flash light at night. Just to remind them, you know."
As far as the ranking is concerned the leader at the latest position report (at 16hrs) was Jeremie Beyou (BPI) who has a little more than 3 miles advantage on second placed Francois Gabart (Skipper Macif 2010), third is the well experienced Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel) while the winner of the first leg and leader of the general scoreboard Armel Le Clea'ch (Brit Air) is fourth at 3,9 miles. Italian Pietro D'Alì seems to have found the right feeling with his Figaro II and is fifth at 4.5 miles behind Beyou.

Victories For "Alegre" and "Matador" in the Coastal Race
Palma de Mallorca, Spain: The 29 Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre crosses its midpoint tomorrow, and some of the boats begin to look like winners in their divisions. "Alegre" in IRC A and "Matador" in IRC B made it clear who are the bosses in the coastal race held today, which showed their superiority on the water. Big swing in the top positions for the rest of the classes, which will result in three very exciting final days of competition, especially now where the discards come into play. "Itaca IX", "Tanit Medilevel" and "Legalain" climb up to the top of the board in RI 1, RI 2 and X-35, displacing all the former leaders. X-41 "Ibersotar" remains leader in her division.
The compensated time classes (IRC and RI) faced today's traditional coastal race, a thirty miles long course which scored double, in twelve to fifteen knots wind which shifted from the southwesterly to the easterly. From the start, the fleet headed to an offset mark, from which they sailed downwind towards the first bottom mark, and from there to the variable windward one. The first scoring mark was placed next to Illetes, and, from there, a beat took them to the Isle of Sech, where the second scoring mark had been set, then back to Sech, and straight to the finish line.
The IRC A delivered few novelties in an eventful day which resulted in two broken spinnakers, those of "Ran" and "Bellamente".
In IRC B, "CAM" put herself together, in spite of which Fernando Leon's crew couldn't manage to pass Argentinean "Matador". A good start and tactics allowed the boat steered by the Prince of Asturias to control the race from beginning to end, but Guillermo Parada onboard "Matador" managed to cut down distances at Illetes where the first scoring mark was placed, just like "Bribon" and "Cristabella".
"Movistar" of Pedro Campos was second in today's RI 2 both races, which were won by "Tanit Medilevel" of Nacho Campos, thus gaining the first place of the board.
The committee hopes to run two races for the RI and one-design classes tomorrow, thus achieving the eight races which would allow a discard.

Teamorigin Takes Issue with Role of America's Cup Challenger
In the published in TheDailySail.com Simmer and team boss, Sir Keith Mills say they are not happy with the lack of response and role of the Challenger, Club Nautico di Roma in the 'consultation' process.
TheDailySail reports that: 'The main issue it seems is the invisibility of the Challenger of Record, the Club Nautico di Roma and their team Mascalzone Latino. Since the press conference in Rome on 6 May, Mascalzone Latino Team Principle Vincenzo Onorato has been decidedly below the radar and there has been little sense that the Challenger of Record has been performing their function of keeping the Defender in check via the 'mutual consent' process we heard so much about prior to the 33rd America's Cup. In fact there are startling similarities between the 'silent partner' role the Club Nautico di Roma appears to be playing at present in the design of the 34th America's Cup to that of the CNEV in the build-up with Alinghi to the 33nd.
As Sir Keith Mills puts it: 'We have tried to contact them [Mascalzone Latino] on a number of occasions and had no response. They are not interested in talking to anyone.'
TeamOrigin has written to Onorato and proposed a group of challengers take on the responsibility of Challenger of Record as a group, like the Challenger Commissions that have been formed prior to all the America's Cups since 1995. 'We're asking for that so that it is the challengers acting as a group together. We won't always agree, but they never have in the past and you get strong and weak challengers and that is part of it, but as a group we go and say to the defender 'we want to do this',' says TeamOrigin CEO Grant Simmer.

The course for the GOR is now confirmed as: Mallorca - Cape Town (RSA) - Wellington (NZ) - Punta del Este (URY) - Charleston (USA) - Mallorca.
Mallorca is renowned for hosting premium yacht racing events including the Copa del Rey, the Palma Velas as well as the Superyacht Cup and is capable of providing everything an around the world race could wish for: extensive and high-quality marine services, fantastic sailing conditions, stunning scenery, a rich maritime history and a vibrant onshore scene all combine to provide skippers, sponsors and spectators with an exceptional venue. Starting and finishing the GOR in Mallorca will also present competitors with the challenge of two passages through the Gibraltar Straits on Leg 1 and Leg 5, adding a fifth ocean and multiple tactical decisions to the race course, guaranteeing compelling viewing as the event unfolds.
Due to the busy calendar of existing yachting events in Mallorca, the Race Organisation has agreed to move the start date of the GOR to 1400hrs local time on Sunday 25th September 2011. Consequently, the revised schedule for the GOR is as follows:

Wayfarer International Championships
This brings the classic design bang up to date in terms of contemporary design, build quality, performance and features. Forty-five of these Hartley-produced boats attended; some helms having moved over from their classic 'woodies' and the rest of the Mark IVs bringing new blood to the fleet. Sunday was Practice Race day which also incorporated practice starts and boat tuning sessions. The Practice Race was held in Weymouth Bay in a glorious force four south-westerly with sunny conditions and waves to match.
On the final day, the championship was finely poised between Rix and Potts with McNamara close behind. A lot depended on the final race and in an ideal world a steady breeze. This was not to be as the sea-breeze continued to fight the northerly. The race was shortened in the dying breeze - McNamara's eighth place was the best of the title contenders and with that he secured the championship with the most consistent overall performance.

Sunset+Vine|APP will be responsible for producing and distributing the coverage of the Championships which will take place in Fremantle, Western Australia from 3 to 18 December 2011. World Championship titles for the ten Olympic sailing events will be contested and 1,200 sailors are expected to compete. The Perth 2011 ISAF Worlds are the principal qualification regatta for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition where 75% of the national places will be decided.

The Spanish government has introduced a new temporary sailing permit that allows boatbuilders, importers, distributors and dealers the possibility to sail leisure craft to shows, exhibitions and sea trials with prospective customers, prior to matriculation.
In addition to crew, a maximum number of three guests are allowed on board for demonstration passages only. The temporary permit is valid for a maximum period of six months after which it has to be renewed if needed.

Quantum Sail Design Group, LLC has announced the presence of a new affiliate loft in Palma de Mal- lorca. Quantum Palma is owned by Patrick Whetter and Spike Thompson and will offer both sales and service with an emphasis on serving the super yacht market.
Both Whetter and Thompson have served as super yacht captains and have experience in super yacht sail mak- ing. The pair founded Vela 2000 in Palma in 1993, where they produced super yacht sails for boats worldwide including Salperton, African Queen, Sunrise, Wellenrieter, Nelson, and many others.
Quantum Palma will operate from a 1600M2 custom-built loft in Alaro, Mallorca, one of the best super yacht facilities in the Mediterranean.

Curing at 120°C is state of the art for the production of racing vessels, antennas, radars and other non-flying parts, however a curing capacity at 200°C is needed to approach the more specialized high technology moulds and parts markets such as those of the aeronautical industry. Indeed it is no coincidence that nowadays, large suppliers of prepreg carbon are developing "out-of-autoclave" resin systems, whose mechanical and thermal characteristics are much superior to those of 120°C class products.
This is the company's fifth curing oven and it is comprised of 4 x 8.15 m long blocks capable, depending on the projects, of being assembled end to end to form a 32.6 m long oven, or of being used independently as 4 separate ovens. The unit is mounted on rails making it possible to position it over the part to be polymerized, thus avoiding movement of the moulds, which could result in deformations.
