In Race 1 BMW ORACLE Racing skipper Jimmy Spithill of Australia took the right side of the racecourse and won a tacking duel up the first leg to lead at the first windward mark after a leg of 1.2 nautical miles. The two crews went through the leeward gate together, each taking opposite sides, and up the second windward leg TEAMORIGIN opened a lead to on the right hand side. "In the first race we had an advantage off the start line, but probably chose the wrong leeward gate to round," said tactician John Kostecki. "Up the second beat they got a little shift to the right, but fault on us. We have to get it right next time." In the second race TEAMORIGIN got an early lead when BMW ORACLE Racing jumped the start early and lost valuable time restarting. The BMW ORACLE crew was tight on TEAMORIGIN's lee bow trying to force them over the start line early, but instead the westerly flowing tide swept BMW ORACLE over the line early and handed the British a sizable advantage. The race was shortened at the leeward gate with the wind blowing 22 knots and gusting higher. "We would've preferred another lap," said Murray Jones, the team's strategist. "We were a long way behind so in that situation you're hoping for a handling error or a breakdown on your opponent. But I enjoyed today." -- Tim Jeffery Mike Golding Wins Artemis Challenge Trophy
After a strong start, Golding took the lead from Veolia Environment just before the Needles, with Veolia Environment crossing the finish line at the Royal Yacht Squadron in second place. Aboard Artemis Ocean Racing, reigning Eventing World Champion Zara Phillips and Olympic Gold medallist Amy Williams got stuck in, helping helmsman and double Olympic medallist Simon Hiscocks and the Artemis team into a third place finish. Former rugby international Martin Bayfield, who also plays the role of Robbie Coltrane's body double 'Hagrid' in the Harry Potter films was put to work aboard British sailor Dee Caffari's boat Gaes as 'chief grinder' for the day. Fellow Harry Potter stars the 'Weasley Twins' Oliver and James Phelps, along with GMTV's Emma Crosby joined West Country sailor Steve White aboard Toe in the Water. Youth Wins Over Experience as Bartosz Rakocy Takes OK Europeans While two second places secured the bronze medal for Goodbody, a 1-4 for Lindhardtsen moved him up one place to third. Second overnight, Greg Wilcox (NZL) had poor first beats today and could only managed to finish 6-8, so dropped to fourth overall. In winning his first major title, Rokocy said, "It's a very nice feeling and I very happy to win this regatta. It was very hard to win. But Tim and Jorgen has OCS which really helped me. They are really good sailors, so it's very special to win here." Rokocy is just 20 years old and has been sailing the OK Dinghy for a number of years. "I need more power. I am only 82 kg so it is hard to sail against 90 kg sailors. I still have bit to learn upwind, but downwind I was fast." "Now I have a week off and then I am sailing the Laser youth world championships at Hayling Island, in the UK. When I get heavier I will go for the Finn in maybe one or two years. I also plan to defend the OK National title in Poland later this year. Next year I am planning to sail OK as well including the worlds in Largs and Kiel week. It's a great class to be involved in." Maine's Governor Baldacci Salutes Morris Yachts! Yesterday, Cuyler Morris welcomed Governor Baldacci, other top Maine officials, and editors from Cruising World Magazine to Morris Yachts' State of the Yard meeting. Cuyler accepted the Bristol Award from Cruising World Magazine on behalf of the Morris Crew for the M52. 2010 has been a good year at Morris Yachts. 10 new boats have been sold including 7 new M29s. Brokerage sales have also been strong with 12 boats changing hands. Cuyler and the Governor reminded the gathering that Maine has adjusted the Maine State tax - essentially reducing the tax from 5% to 2%. For more information: www.morrisyachts.com/news/ Leaving Sunny Spain For Brest On perfect time, under clear skies and with a good northerly breeze of around 7/8 knots the 45 boats strong fleet crossed the starting line, just two miles outside the harbour of Gijon, on the Atlantic Spanish coast. The Race Committee promptly hoisted the individual recall flag as five skippers were over the line: Sebastien Josse, Jeanne Gregoire, Erwan Tabarly, Jeremie Beyou and the Italian Pietro D'Alì. 13 minutes later, Yann Elies (Generali Europ Assistance) was first around the Seamobile mark, with a good 15 lengths led on the second placed, Alexis Loison (All Mer Ineo Gdf Suez). They were followed by Laurent Gouezigoux (Trier c'est preserver) in third and Nicolas Jossier (Impulsion Entreprendre en Pays Granvillais) in fourth. Fifth was Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel). In a spectacular display of coloured spinnakers the fleet then headed to the second gate, the Radio France mark. Top ten at the Radio France mark The fleet now face their first night at sea, according to Sylvain Mondon from Meteo-France overnight the 45 skippers will have to deal with two incoming fronts to cross the ridge in the Bay of Biscay. Sailing up to the first passage, the SN1 mark which is 235 from Gijon, the fleet will sail in 8/12 knots airs which will progressively shifting tot o W/NW. Tomorrow night the north-westerly breeze will be well established and pretty gusty, topping 20/25 knots and with a fairly strong swell. To be noted that the length of Leg 2 has been recalculated by the Race Direction, the route to Brest is not 418 miles as previously announced but 385 miles. Governor's Cup: Youth Match Racing Regatta In the semi-finals, the first team with two wins moved on to the Finals. The semi-finals between Royal Port Nicholson and Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron began with a win by RNZYS on Saturday. Cruising Yacht Club of Australia lost their first race to Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Segerblom, also on Saturday. In their rematches on Sunday, RNZYS and NHYC Segerblom were the winners in the first two races. The winner of the petit final for third place was the Royal Port Nicholson team of Matthew Steven, Tim Coltman and Chris Jones. The New Zealand team won over their neighbors, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia team of Jay Griffin, Will Parker and Ted Hackney, who placed third in the 2009 Gov Cup. In the final race, Segerblom rounded the first mark eight seconds ahead but had spinnaker problems, so Tiller had a chance to catch up. He went left to find breeze and at the next cross was ahead. Tiller rounded the next mark ten seconds ahead and was able to win. -- Nancy Mellon The standings for the teams at the end of the Regatta: 1. William Tiller, Harry Thurston and Shaun Mason of RNZYS will no longer be eligible, but perhaps Chris Segerblom will return from his first year at Yale to take on all comers again. Big Media Experiment at the 505 Worlds German interest in the regatta has been particularly strong, with fans following the dominant progress of Wolfgang Hunger and Julien Kleiner who are in firm control of the event at just past the half way stage. What has caused greater surprise for event organiser Thomas Capitani, from Sailing Aarhus, is that more than 23,000 individual visitors from 77 different nations have logged on to follow the progress of the 126 teams competing in the Bay of Aarhus. "Traditional media such as newspapers and TV have interests in just three sports - football, football and football," says Capitani. "There isn't much room for a so-called minority sport such as sailing to get air time in traditional media, but we know that globally there is a massive interest in sailing. So we have been using the SAP 505 World Championships as an opportunity to experiment with a number of different social media and digital technology to bring the thrill of the competition to that global audience." The website brings together a range of different content, from Twitter feeds, live TV commentary streamed in real-time on the Internet, GPS tracking, photos wired to Flickr, and in-depth technical race analysis from software giant, SAP, the 505 class sponsor. Some of the boats are carrying camera phones that live-stream images of the sailors back to shore. "What is happening at the 505 Worlds is not a one-off venture, but just the start of an ongoing development of technology that we believe will help communicate the excitement of sailing to a wider audience on media that people - and especially kids - are already using." says Capitani. The other special aspect of the technology project in Aarhus is that all of the hardware and software is either free or low-cost. The camera mounts that attach the camera phones to the back of the 505s cost around $50 or less, with all of the parts available from a local hardware store. "I love what the America's Cup and other big league sailing events are doing with new technology," says Capitani, "but the cost is prohibitive for lower level sailing events. So what we are trying to do here in Aarhus is show that, OK, you may not be able to match the quality of the high-end technology, but you can still achieve a great deal with technology solutions that are affordable for even your average sailing club." The Danish brothers needed to sail out of their skins if they were to stop the German team of Wolfgang Hunger and Julien Kleiner running away with the regatta. The Bojsen-Mollers scored a 2nd and 1st in light offshore breezes which were shifting up to 40 degrees from the north-west. Will the superior upwind boatspeed of the Danish or the better downwind speed of the Germans be the deciding factor? Both teams have looked good across the wind range, so there isn't much to separate them. "It's good sailing here," said the German. "Today the situation was shifty winds which was very difficult, but you have to deal with the winds that you get. Overall, across all the different winds we've had, we can be sure that the best sailor will win the week." Top ten after 6 races: 1. Contact for enquiries America's Cup Media Trials Web Site Launched The media trials were geared to examine every aspect of America's Cup racing, including the type of boat (monohull or multihull), the format of the racecourse (upwind, downwind and start sequences) and, importantly, the video output for broadcast and on- line viewing. "We launched this site because we generated so much material that we needed to consolidate edited highlights in one place," said BMW ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts. "We welcome sailors and non-sailors alike to offer comments and feedback." More than 150 hours of video requiring 10 terabytes of memory was captured in the trials, which used a pair of BMW ORACLE Racing's RC 44 high-performance monohulls and X40 catamarans. Another two rounds of trials are planned for next month and later in the fall, where additional layers of features will be included. Next month, positioning, performance and biometric data will be experimented with during the 1851 Cup in Cowes, England, followed by proof of concept technology trials in October. The trials are necessary because many of the cameras, microphones and data systems will have to be custom designed and built, employing specialized housings and mounts. Colin de Mowbray, MBE Colin is nothing less than a Clipper legend and had been an important part of the company since its first race back in 1996 - a race in which he skippered Chrysolite to fourth place. For the 1998, 2000, 2002 races, Colin took on the role of Race Director, winning hundreds of friends amongst the skippers, crews, the host ports and yacht clubs who welcomed the race all round the world. They did so thanks to his charm, great sense of humour and delightfully persuasive powers and Colin was always welcomed back in subsequent years as a very dear friend. For the 05-06 and 07-08 races he continued to travel the world as Operations Director, working closely with the many cities and sponsors involved with the event and his knowledge and wisdoms were richly valued by all those who worked alongside him. Putting the words 'retirement' and 'Colin' in the same sentence was a ridiculous concept. After a memorable party in which he made sure he had the last word, he headed off for a long sail down to the Azores in his beloved Fidget before returning to oversee a major building project on a house in Lymington, which was recently completed. He was the perfect candidate to be Commodore of the newly created Clipper Race Yacht Club and had been busily involved in preparing for a club event in Hull this coming weekend. Clipper Chairman and founder, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, today said, "He was such an important part of the development of Clipper and had continued his interest with the Clipper Race Yacht Club after he retired a year ago. From a personal point of view, Colin was a friend of 40 years whose enthusiasm and humour always made him delightful company. It won't seem quite the same without his breezy company; Colin was a one off." From Sir Robin, William and all the team at Clipper Ventures, we send our deepest sympathy to Colin's wife, Vanessa, and his family. Whilst many of you who knew Colin may wish to express your condolences directly to Colin's family, we ask that you allow them some space to begin to come to terms with their tremendous loss.
