Twenty-nine sailors are within two miles of each other twenty-four hours into racing, proving once more just how high and level the standard of racing is. Each inch of a mile is eked out with effort and concentration. Most agree that there will be choices to be taken and options that open upon rounding the next major point of passage, where the wind is forecast to veer round towards the north, northwest and "decreasing before increasing at the Raz de Sein" predicts Sylvain Mondon from Meteo France, "the ridge of high pressure is expected to drift tonight just ahead of the fleet right up to Friday, when they will have to negotiate crossing it on the final approach to Gijon. Early forecast would expect to see the first to finish in Gijon in the early hours of Saturday morning. Anthony Marchand (Espoir Region Bretagne) leads the rookies in 15th place, whilst Jonny Malbon (Artemis) from the UK lies in 20th place well positioned with the leaders. Pietro D'Alì (I.NOVA 3) has managed to catch up on the leaders and currently stands in 27th place and just 1.7 nm from the leader, after having lost ground on the more offshore option last night and Francisco Lobato (Roff / Team-Tempo) has narrowed his gap on the leaders to 7.4 miles bringing up the back of the fleet. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson Top ten at 1600 GMT Wednesday: 1. From 22 to 25 July the competitors enjoyed seven demanding championship races under the watchful eye of PRO Alan Crossbie and his team who worked incredibly hard to make the very best of the often light and shifty conditions. The quality of the fleet was outstanding by anyone's reckonning, including many of Ireland's top sailors along with some very well known overseas visitors, and as a result the racing was a joy to watch with constant place changes on every leg. The 2011 Dragon Irish Championship will be held at Kinsale, the venue for the 2012 Dragon Gold Cup, and details about this event will be published in due course at www.dragonclass.ie Overall Top Five 1. Manroland Tornado World Championship Not a lot of news as the wind did not make an appearance but that wasn't all bad as it gave sailors time for lots of boat fixing and chilling out around the boat park. Roland Gabler, Nahid Gabler, GER, 5 points www.tornado-class.org/events/worlds.htm Team Aqua Takes Match Racing Championship New Zealander Cameron Appleton and Team Aqua captured the match racing portion of the week-long regatta with a 9-1 record. They clinched the title with a victory over Russell Coutts and BMW ORACLE Racing in flight 13. Aqua is hull No. 3 in the fleet, but shows little sign of aging after four years of hard racing. One loss behind Team Aqua, Day 1 leader Terry Hutchinson and Artemis finished at 8-2 and tied with BMW ORACLE Racing for second place. Artemis won the tie-breaker by virtue of yesterday's head-to-head win. BMW ORACLE had a chance to win the match racing, but fell short in its head-to-head match against Aqua. Paul Cayard and Katusha scored a big win against Artemis when they completed a penalty turn on the finish line. Markus Wieser and Sea Dubai pulled off a similarly exciting win against Rod Davis and Ceeref. The Slovenian boat had rolled Sea Dubai on starboard jibe two-thirds of the way down the run to the finish, and then crossed ahead on port jibe just inside the committee boat end of the line to capture the point. Tomorrow is a scheduled practice day for the fleet racing portion of the RC 44 Valencia Cup, which starts Friday. Three pre-starts are planned in the afternoon, followed by a practice race. Organizers hope to finish the race in the Darsena. Eleven youth sailors between the ages of 15 and 17 years will be on hand as guest crewmen. The forecast of stronger winds were not accurate and day three was sailed in 8-12 knots of shifty offshore winds with 20-30 degree shifts upsetting at least half of the fleet, The left hand side was generally favoured in race five and was led from start to finish by the overnight leader Rakocy to cement his lead at the top of the scoresheet. Jorgen Lindhardtsen (DEN) finished second and day one leader Terry Curtis (GBR) refound his earlier form to finish third. The race was perhaps defined by the number of black flags including front runners Tim Goodbody (IRL), Pawel Pawlaczyk (POL) and Antoni Pawlowski (POL), which has significantly changed the overall ordering. Race six was characterised by a large right shift on the first beat and a large left shift on the second beat which left the leaders laughing and the tail enders hoping. After six races one discard has now kicked in. Rakocy had a very good day with a 1-3 to move into a ten point lead and Lindhardtsen, the 1978 World Champion and 1998 European Champion, also had a good day with a 2-5 to move into second overall and. The six day event, starting on Friday August 20, is run by the Bay's four sailing and yacht clubs and includes a four day yachting championship together with social entertainment each night at the clubhouses. Free berthing is again provided at town moorings by Tor Bay Harbour Authority, together with free launching for dinghies taking part. Espada wins the Women's Open Keelboat Championship supported by Wight Vodka Louise Morton's Espada beat 16 other teams to win the Women's Open Keelboat Championship 2010. It's the third time Louise has claimed the trophy, but this year the competition was hot on her heels, as Pip Hare came second in her Elan 37 Elaine, and the J105 JOS of Hamble, skippered by Clemency Ives, coming in third. One hundred and sixty women from all over the UK and abroad took part in the event, which was hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble, and supported by championship sponsor Coffin Mew LLP, race sponsor Dubarry of Ireland and drinks sponsor Wight Vodka. Six races over two days were split into three classes - IRC1, IRC2 and J80. Espada, the 1/4 tonner, won all six races in IRC2 to claim the class victory, but Elaine came close to pushing her off the top of the Championship, winning five races in IRC1 to claim class victory, but not quite the Championship. Swallow, skippered by Viks Lincoln, came out on top in the J80 class. Clipper Boats Enter Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race
Starting on Monday 23 August 2010, the fully crewed, non-stop Round Britain and Ireland Race covers 1,802 miles and the two Clipper 68s will be racing against IMOCA 60s, Class 40s and Multihulls as well as the 100 foot maxi ICAP Leopard which is looking to break Artemis Ocean Racing's 2006 record of 7 days, 4 hours, 29 minutes, 40 seconds. The teams will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and race clockwise around Britain and Ireland. Returning to take charge of Hull & Humber after he was med-evac'd in the North Pacific when a wave broke his leg during Clipper 09-10, is Salisbury based skipper, Piers Dudin. Skipper of Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, Matt Pike, will be handing over charge of the Scottish entry to Uniquely Singapore's skipper Jim Dobie for the race. Jim will be bringing some Scottish blood to the team as the Australian skipper explains. Both skippers will be leading mixed teams with experienced crew from previous Clipper Races as well as recently trained Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race crew who are looking at getting some Clipper 68 racing experience prior to the next edition of the biennial challenge which starts in August 2011. www.clipper-events.com Bumper Entry For 50th Endeavour Trophy This historic annual event, which was first held in 1961, is invitation only to determine the overall dinghy champion of champions from the UK's most popular dinghy racing classes, but in this special 50th year, the organisers have opened up the invitation to former Endeavour champions who will race in the Masters' Championship. The Advanta-sponsored Masters' championship - to be held on the Sunday - will be a great spectators' event with the likes of former champions Keith Musto, Nick Martin, Chips Howard, Ian Southworth, David Hayes, Mike Holmes, Alan Gillard, Steve Tylecote, Mike McNamara, Nick Craig, and last year's winner Geoff Carveth among those signed up so far. The race programme for the 50th Anniversary Endeavour Trophy for 2010 champions starts on Friday 1 October, racing for the Endeavour series continues all day Saturday, and concludes on Sunday morning. Racing takes place in carefully selected, strict one-designs. Owing to the success of the last five years, the Ian Howlett-designed Topper Xenon is the chosen class once again. Not only does this particular design offer an ideal all-up crew weight range of between 18-24 stone (114-152 kilos), but also because it's a relatively new design and has no class championship, there is no class champion to gain an unfair advantage. Topper, who have specifically built and kindly loaned the fleet of 30 brand-new Xenons for the event, have been working closely with Hyde who are supplying sails, and Allen Brothers the fittings. Contact for enquiries Legends Signed Up For Skandia Sail For Gold Many of the world's top sailors have signed up, including World, European and Olympic champions, who will all descend on Weymouth and Portland from 9 - 14 August for the final regatta of the ISAF Sailing World Cup 2009-2010. Some of these competitors are returning to Olympic class sailing after a break for events such as the Volvo Ocean Race and America's Cup. Triple Olympic gold and silver medallist Ben Ainslie (GBR) announced his entry this week. Nearly two years to the day that he secured his third Olympic gold in Beijing, Ben returns to compete in his Finn. Current ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year Torben Grael (BRA) and Anna Tunnicliffe (USA) are set to compete at this event. Grael, a five time Olympic medallist has recently returned to the Star. His last Olympic appearance was in Athens in 2004, and most recently he skippered Ericsson 4 to victory in the 2008/09 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. He will be competing in the highly competitive Star class, where he secured bronze at the World Championships in Rio earlier this year, in Weymouth he and fellow crew Marcelo Ferreira will line up alongside current World Champions and Beijing gold medallists Skandia Team GBR's Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson. With a gold medal in the Laser Radial Class from Beijing under her belt, Tunnicliffe is back competing both on her Radial in 2010 and also lining up in the fiercely competitive Women's Match Racing class at Weymouth. The international field is a depth of talent including Australian 470 Beijing gold medal-winning crew Malcolm Page, fresh from winning the World Championships with Mathew Belcher. Olympic veteran, quadruple Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt (BRA), and recently crowned Women's 470 World Champions Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout (NED). Claire Leroy (FRA) and crew, currently ranked third overall in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Women's Match Racing standings will be battling it out with just one point separating the top three boats led by Skandia Team GBR's Lucy Macgregor and crew. Elsewhere the Finn class is equally as close, with just seven points seperating the top three sailors. Britain's Ed Wright will be looking to defend his ISAF Sailing World Cup title, but with Finn heavyweights including Beijing silver medallist Zach Railey (USA), Ivan Kljakovic gaspic (CRO), Jonathan Lobert (FRA) and Ben Ainslie's return to the circuit, it is clear there will be a well fought battle for the overall title. ECO 60 Class Launches New Website The Eco 60 Class website - www.eco60.org or www.eco60.net - goes live today with detailed information about the yachts and the background to the class, as well as a section devoted to Eco 60s for sale. The class is all about allowing enthusiastic sailors with limited funds to make their mark on the world of ocean racing, and will be premiered in the VELUX 5 OCEANS 2010. The Eco 60 Class takes advantage of the large market of third generation Open 60 yachts for sale, effectively recycling them back into the world they were built for - solo ocean racing.
