When they turned round the wrong side of the finish line, bowing to superstitions or not, TeamOrigin (GBR) and Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) had done enough to prove during today's official TP52 Practice Race that they should be contenders in the light breezes which are expected for the Regata Camper - Conde de Godo Trophy - Barcelona. Racing in less than 10 knots of gentle sea breeze the British TP52 helmed by four times Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie (GBR) was more than one minute ahead at the finish, after gaining on each successive leg, but they turned back upwind through the finish line, as did the Kiwi reigning champions - both registering DNF's - leaving AudiA1 powered by ALL4ONE (GER/FRA) to take the winner's gun. The practice race played out pretty much in line with the expectations which have been voiced around Barcelona's Moll de la Fusta dockside over recent days: this will be a close regatta, the TP52's will be very even in speed in the lighter winds, and anyone who gets off the start line and around the first turning mark in the top two or three has a good chance of holding on. The consensus is that this will be a long, intense and hard fought regatta in light winds and high daytime temperatures, and with up to 12 races it could prove pivotal as we pass theoretical half way mark of the 2010 season here. GP42's Readying to go After a run of bad luck in the first two regattas in Cascais and Marseille, there is no crew keener to go racing again in the GP42 Series than John Bassadone and his Peninsula Petroleum (GBR) team. Twice in successive regattas they having broken their masthead crane, causing them to miss a race each time. The last time it was particularly heartbreaking, as they had just worked themselves up to lead around the top mark, only to have the crane crack and fail just moments before hoisting their spinnaker. The remaining GP42 teams are doing their final preparations and tuning to be ready for tomorrow's Practice Race. Iberdrola (ESP), AIRISESSENTIAL (ITA), and Madrid - Caser Seguros (ESP) were also out on the water practicing, while Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) is awaiting for their remaining team members to arrive on site. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson Global Ocean Race Partners with Normandy Channel Race The GOR requires that a non-stop, 2,000 mile qualifying passage is undertaken by all entries. The GOR Race Organisation will grant a 1,500 mile qualifying credit towards the mandatory 2,000 miles for all entries that complete the Normandy Channel Race 2011 (NCR): a 1,000 mile, non-stop double-handed race that starts from Caen, France, on Sunday May 15th next year, four months before the start of the GOR round the world race. GOR entries competing in the NCR are required to carry out a further, separate, 500 mile, non-stop passage to complete their qualifying mileage. For GOR 'Team Entries' with up to six crew for the entire circumnavigation, having two of their members complete the NCR means a credit of 1,000 miles plus a remaining 1,000 mile non-stop passage sailed with the other team members onboard. The two events have also agreed to work closely together on promotion and communication throughout 2011. globaloceanrace.com/?page=news&news_id=411〈=en Platu 25 Worlds in Alicante The battle started at 13.10 after a general recall and a postponement flag. The start was given under black flag with most of the fleet opting for the Commitee boat end where it looked like the wind was a bit stronger. Just after the first downwind mark the Committee decided for a course change since the wind shifted from 120 degrees to 100 degrees, yet not decreasing in intensity. The second race started at 15.00, still with a gentle breeze of seven knots from 120 degrees. Tomorrow, wind permitting, three more races are scheduled. Provisional General Results (66 Entries) 1. Sole female skipper Dee Caffari will compete in the Artemis Challenge in Gaes Centros Auditivos having recently joined the Spanish-based team. Up against the strong British contingent will be sailing legend Roland Jourdain on Veolia Environment. Arnaud Boissières skippering Akena Verandas makes the journey to Cowes for this event for the second year whilst Ryan Breymaier and Boris Herrmann, who will later this year compete in the Barcelona World Race, will join the fray aboard VE1 for the first time. The event, now in its fourth year, will take place on Tuesday 3rd August. www.artemisoceanracing.com Three Selected as Early Winners in America's Cup Video Competition The competition, launched last month, invited Generation Y to share production techniques on how to energize the look of the competition for the world's oldest sporting trophy. The under 28 crowd was targeted because of its close association with extreme sports and social media. Every aspect of the America's Cup - from type of boat (monohull or multihull) to course format to television production - will come under scrutiny this week at the America's Cup TV Production Trials, slated to begin Thursday off Valencia, Spain. Two pairs of monohulls and multihulls will compete on modified courses to review the format of racing. The yachts will be equipped with HD and 3D cameras to capture the on board action. Contestants in the video competition were required to produce a video clip of any length that illustrated unique production techniques. The judging panel of extreme sports and social media experts included television producers and sailing videographers, and they had more than 60 videos to view. The video competition remains open through September, but the three early winners represented a mix of artistry, music overlay and interesting post-production techniques. The top three videos were "A bit of Hawai'i," produced by Ricky Lesser of California, "Seaweed," produced by Luke Luke White of the UK, and "Ride It," produced by Alberto Accettulli of Italy. -- Tim Jeffery And The No Wind Reports... Happily weather predictions for tomorrow promise a return to the beautiful conditions the fleet experienced on the opening day which should allow the race committee to set the fleet off on a long distance race utilising some of the Solent's furthest extremes. www.britishclassicyachtclub.org/regatta * Largs, Scotland: Rain and mill pond conditions on the Clyde this morning, gave way to bright sunshine and a 5-6kts south westerly breeze late this afternoon, which prompted the race committee to attempt to get the opening races of the Laser Radial World Youth Championship underway. Having been 'cooped up' under postponement for over four hours, the 317 young sailors were anxious to launch and head out to the start line in a hopeful, building south-westerly breeze at 1515 with a 5-6kts south-westerly breeze on the race course. However, as the fleets arrived in the race area, at the northern end of Cumbrae just off Skelmorlie Bank, the wind started to drop and was down to 4kts. The wind pattern then took a turn for the worst and what hope there was of a late afternoon start, disappeared, leaving the race committee no option other than to postpone racing for the day at 1730. In an effort to make up for lost time, the race committee has rescheduled tomorrow's racing to 1100. The racing yacht Buccaneer was returning from Cork Week Regatta in Ireland when the woman went overboard in fresh south westerly winds and a moderate sea. Another yacht, Jaguar Logic, relayed a message to Falmouth coastguards and the two lifeboats were launched, along with the rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor. The RNLI crews on Sennen Cove Tamar class all weather lifeboat and the St Mary's Severn class all weather lifeboat headed for the scene at top speed. But just 12 or so miles from the scene, news came that the woman, who had been in the water for two hours, had been found alive and was being winched onboard the helicopter. She was then flown to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro, Cornwall. * Practical Boat Owner reports: Prue Nash, a yacht broker from Hamble, was operating the sails when, despite being clipped on, she fell through a guard rail. Her harness and lifejacket caught on the underside of the yacht, pinning her under water, so she had to remove them to regain the surface. She then trod water for two cold and exhausting hours in the dark until help arrived. The day kicked off with The Bugle vs. the King & Queen's team -The Master Batters - the same fixture that started the tournament last year. The match was a hard fought affair with The Bugle being sent into bat first and scoring a competitive score of 72 in their 10 overs. With King and Queen's defeat of The Bugle there was going to be a new name on the trophy... with King & Queen and The Victory meeting in the final. The King & Queen won the toss and elected to field first. With some tight fielding and The King & Queen's strike bowler John Vaughn impressively managing to make the ball bounce off his forehead and into the hands of George King for a catch -one of the highlights of the innings - The Victory's opening partnership was broken. The King & Queen's bowling attack then managed to dismiss the dangerous middle order of Lloyd Brooks and Paul Ackland quite cheaply and limit the score to 60 off their 10 overs. With the King and Queen requiring a run a ball, the openers started the innings quickly and got the scoreboard ticking over. A succession of quick wickets, including a comical run out, meant the pressure was on, so in stepped George King to partner Jack Inglis.
