Contributions welcome, send to Berkhout Enters The Record Books with Fifth World Championship Win Mother nature played ball for the last day of the Delta Lloyd 470 World Championship taking place in The Hague, with brilliant sunshine and a 12 knot southwesterly breeze for the Men's and Women's medal races, held directly off the beach at the Hague. In the Men's race Australians Matt Belcher and Malcolm Page had secured gold through their 20 point lead yesterday to claim the Men's World Championship title. With gold secure, the fight was fully on for the remaining podium positions between six boats. In the end it was France's Beijing bronze medallist Nicolas Charbonnier, sailing with Baptiste Meyer Dieu, who won the men's medal race to take the silver, passing the medal race's early leaders, Croats Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic, who took bronze. However the class act of this regatta has been the newly crowned Australian World Champions, Beijing Gold medallist Malcolm Page and his new helm Matt Belcher. 'They are really good, especially when it is windy," said Charbonnier. 'We have a lot of work to do if we want to compete with them." This view was shared by Fantela and Marenic. 'They sail really consistently with good speed and good tactics and strategy. If they didn't start well or the first upwind isn't good, they can really pass many more boats than anyone else. And Viktor has many many medals," confided Fantela, referring to Viktor Kovalenko, the Australian team's Ukrainian coaching legend, who has been dubbed 'the medal maker' thanks to the part he has played in five Olympic gold 470 medals. While Belcher and Page were secure in first place going into today's medal race, the case was the opposite in the Women's medal race where leaders New Zealand's Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie were one slender point ahead of the powerful Dutch defending World Champions, Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout. In the end, the Dutch got a good start off the pin end of the line while Aleh and Powrie were forced to tack away early and duck transoms. The Dutch pulled into the lead on the first run with the New Zealanders mid-fleet and while the two boats match raced up the second beat this was not enough to bring the New Zealanders back into contention. The run saw the Dutch overtaken by France's world no1 Ingrid Petitjean and Nadège Douroux and third placed Italians Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol, but the Dutch still had four boats between them and the New Zealanders. Victory was theirs, their second 470 World Championship win as a team, and Lobke Berkhout's fifth, a record that now exceeds the four wins of Greece's Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa. -- James Boyd Full results on the event site: International 470 Class Association: www.470.org Cork Week: The Final Chapter You could feel the tension on the dock, with virtually all the classes still to be decided, as the yachts motored out to the combat zone along the narrow confines of Cork River. Facebook - www.facebook.com/hlmarine Fantastic Finale Kingston-upon-Hull, UK: A spectacular welcome greeted the crews of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they arrived back in Hull at the end of their 35,000-mile circumnavigation. Tens of thousands of people lined the banks of the Humber and the quayside of Hull Marina to welcome home the crews, Crossing the finish line overnight at the end of the 14th and final stage of the Clipper 09-10 Race, the Irish entry, Cork, claimed the maximum ten points for securing their second first place of their campaign. It is an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact the team's original yacht ran aground on a reef in the Java Sea in January. Cork's victory in Race 14 denied Hull & Humber their much coveted home port win but their second place finish did allow the 'big orange boat' to leapfrog Jamaica Lightning Bolt in the final standings to finish fourth overall. Again, a remarkable achievement for the team whose original skipper, Piers Dudin, was med-evac'd by the Japanese Coastguard in the North Pacific after his leg was broken when a huge wave washed him across the deck. Piers joined Justin Taylor, who took over as skipper, and the rest of the Hull & Humber crew on stage to great cheers and applause from the crowds. Clipper 09-10 champions, Spirit of Australia, finished third in the final stage of the 14-race challenge, minutes ahead of Cape Breton Island, whose performance guaranteed them a place on the final podium. The Canadian team finish third overall, just 1.3 points behind Team Finland. The ten yachts raced up the Humber in the presentational John Harrison Race, commemorating the man who, in the 18th Century, revolutionised the age of sail by inventing the marine chronometer, a device enabling sailors to accurately plot their longitudinal position. Hull & Humber wowed the crowds with a win while Spirit of Australia flew their spinnaker to the delight of the tens of thousands of spectators. To date more than 2,000 people have become ocean racers by taking part in the Clipper Race and, of these, more than 300 have achieved the rare accolade of becoming a circumnavigator by racing around the world under sail. Eighty-two new circumnavigators have joined the ranks of this exclusive club following the fleet's arrival in Hull today. The final result of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race is: 1. Spirit of Australia, 128 points Medals Awarded At Youth Worlds A spectacular summer day with warm sunshine and a gusty offshore breeze ranging from 8 - 14 knots provided a fantastic final day of racing at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. Spain claimed two gold medals whilst France, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Poland and the Netherlands all won one gold each. The French team retains the Volvo Trophy for the best overall performing nation in a repeat of last year, ahead of the British team in second position. Danish Win Yngling Open European Youth Championship 'It was tough, with those strong winds", says the Danish helm Lucas Lier. Four second places brought them overall victory. Lier continues: 'We were actually quite slow at times, but by staying focused, and keeping our heads cool, we managed to fight back." It was their first time to sail on the Markermeer, a big lake northeast of Amsterdam. 'The water was warm, but we had to get used to the high, short waves. In the beginning the Dutch were much faster, especially downwind, but now we can keep up with them." For the youth (up to 21) sailors this event was the perfect warming up for the Yngling Open World Championships from 18 until 23 July. 51 teams registered for this event that also takes place on the Markermeer, Lelystad. Top 3: 1. Lucas Lier, Emil Max Møller en Konrad Floryan (DEN) Classic Fleet Assembles in Cowes The strong winds which have prevailed in the UK for the last several days resulted in difficult delivery trips for many of the competing boats and the marina this afternoon was buzzing with tails of derring-do from several crews who seemed pleased to have made it to Cowes in more or less one piece. As many as ten of the fifty-five registered entries are still yet to arrive, but classic yacht owners are made of stern stuff and the regatta organisers are very hopeful of all the boats arriving in time to compete on day one. Racing will take place under the IRC handicap system and the fleet has been sub-divided into four racing classes. The regatta kicks off on Monday 19th July with racing inside the confines of the Solent. Tuesday 20th July will see the fleet compete in a long distance race, which if weather permits will see them circumnavigate the Isle of Wight. Wednesday 21st July has been designated Challenge Day and offers competing owners the chance to challenge any other yacht bigger than their own to a boat-on-boat match race. Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd July will see the competitors return to fleet racing to complete the overall series. On Saturday 24th July all yachts are invited to take part in a Parade of Sail to mark the official close of the regatta. www.britishclassicyachtclub.org/regatta Featured Brokerage The Beneteau First 53f5 is the result of a great collaboration between Bruce Farr s design genius and the timeless styling of Pininfarina. This model is one of Beneteau s most successful and they have done incredibly well on both the race course and cruising. This particular yacht is in exceptional condition after having been purchased by her owner in Spain a few years ago and then refitted and continually maintained and upgraded since. She has a very extensive inventory, including watermaker, and has enjoyed many comfortable cruises with family and friends. On the Asian racing scene she is very well known and has a fine string of excellent results. Her sail wardrobe is huge and all sails are in good condition with many having seen very little use. Rod rigging was tested recently and her electronics are all up to date.
