Berkhout Enters The Record Books with Fifth World Championship Win

470 Worlds Mother nature played ball for the last day of the Delta Lloyd 470 World Championship taking place in The Hague, with brilliant sunshine and a 12 knot southwesterly breeze for the Men's and Women's medal races, held directly off the beach at the Hague.

In the Men's race Australians Matt Belcher and Malcolm Page had secured gold through their 20 point lead yesterday to claim the Men's World Championship title.

With gold secure, the fight was fully on for the remaining podium positions between six boats. In the end it was France's Beijing bronze medallist Nicolas Charbonnier, sailing with Baptiste Meyer Dieu, who won the men's medal race to take the silver, passing the medal race's early leaders, Croats Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic, who took bronze.

However the class act of this regatta has been the newly crowned Australian World Champions, Beijing Gold medallist Malcolm Page and his new helm Matt Belcher. 'They are really good, especially when it is windy," said Charbonnier. 'We have a lot of work to do if we want to compete with them." This view was shared by Fantela and Marenic. 'They sail really consistently with good speed and good tactics and strategy. If they didn't start well or the first upwind isn't good, they can really pass many more boats than anyone else. And Viktor has many many medals," confided Fantela, referring to Viktor Kovalenko, the Australian team's Ukrainian coaching legend, who has been dubbed 'the medal maker' thanks to the part he has played in five Olympic gold 470 medals.

While Belcher and Page were secure in first place going into today's medal race, the case was the opposite in the Women's medal race where leaders New Zealand's Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie were one slender point ahead of the powerful Dutch defending World Champions, Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout.

In the end, the Dutch got a good start off the pin end of the line while Aleh and Powrie were forced to tack away early and duck transoms. The Dutch pulled into the lead on the first run with the New Zealanders mid-fleet and while the two boats match raced up the second beat this was not enough to bring the New Zealanders back into contention. The run saw the Dutch overtaken by France's world no1 Ingrid Petitjean and Nadège Douroux and third placed Italians Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol, but the Dutch still had four boats between them and the New Zealanders. Victory was theirs, their second 470 World Championship win as a team, and Lobke Berkhout's fifth, a record that now exceeds the four wins of Greece's Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa. -- James Boyd

Cork Week: The Final Chapter
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.hotcapers.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Cork Week You could feel the tension on the dock, with virtually all the classes still to be decided, as the yachts motored out to the combat zone along the narrow confines of Cork River. The conditions had eased from the previous maelstrom, but this was a day were smart sailing put boats in winning positions.

Watery sunshine, 15 knots from the northwest were to provide some tricky conditions for all classes. Cork Harbour and the surrounding area have huge land effects on the wind, especially today, the gradient made for constant changes.

IRC Super Zero
Johnny Vincent's TP52, Pace came out on top after five days of thrills and spills in the big boat class. Austin Fragomen's TP52, Interlodge was second but only on count back from Gray and Laidlaw's Farr 52, Bob.

Tied on points, Fragomen's TP52, shipped over form the USA to compete at Cork Week beat the Isle of Wight based Farr 52, by the virtue of winning one more race in the eight race series.

IRC Zero
Dave Dwyer's Mills 39 Marinerscove.ie had a bad start to the regatta but showed great tenacity to come back with a vengeance to win the highly competitive class on the last race.

Bernard Lambilliotte's Swan 45, Nemo of Cowes haS been the boat to beat in Class Zero, all week and will obviously be disappointed to lose out on the last day. Anthony O'Leary's Ker 39, Antix was third but finished the regatta in good shape.

J 109 European Championship
The crew on Greg Burgess's J 109, Bluejay punched the air with delight, after taking the gun in the first race of the day.

Brian Moreton's Juke Box was second overall and Ian Nagle and Paul O'Malley's Jelly Baby, snatched third place on the last day from Robert O'Leary's Jeroboam.

IRC One
There was an incredibly close finish in the last race, as the top three boats were separated by 26 seconds, on corrected time. Conor & Denise Phelan's Ker 37, Jump Juice snatched the class title by a single point from Robert Davies' Welsh team on Corby 36, Roxy 6. British Corby 37, Impetuous were third.

IRC Two
Paul O'Higgins' Corby 33, Rockabill V started the regatta in fine form but faltered half way, it was only on the last race that they came back, to clinch the class title from Sailing Logic's Reflex 38, Visit Malta Puma with Rob Mc Connell's A 35, Fool's Gold, finishing strongly to take third.

IRC Three
John Moorehead & Chris Ferres J 35, Bengal Magic have had a cracking week and finished in style by taking a fifth win in the last race of the series but only be 15 seconds from Richard Calveley's Elan 37, Va Va Voom. Ross McDonald's X 332, Equinox will have enjoyed the fresh conditions at Cork Week and claimed second, by some distance from Martin Breen's Harley 33, That's Life!

IRC Four
Paul Kirwan's Sigma 38, Errislannan were assured of both the class title and European Championship and did not compete in the last race. Leaving Paul & Deirdre Tingle's First 31.7, Alpaca and Conor Ronan's Corby 26, Ruthless to battle it out for third. Alpaca beat Ruthless in the last race of the series to take the runner-up spot for the class with Ruthless third overall.

IRC Five
Vincent O'Shea's Corby 25, YANKS $ FFRANCS have had a great Cork Week and won the class by an eight point margin.

IRC Six
O'Brian, Kenefick and Kenefick's Quarter Tonner, Tiger is a real head turning boat and was the only yacht to post straight bullets for the regatta.

Flor O'Driscoll's J 24, Hard on Port was second and Jason Losty's Thomas 25, Woody sailed a very consistent regatta to take third place.

It was decided that the Boat of the Week for Cork Week 2010 should jointly awarded.

Fantastic Finale
Spirit of Australia, skippered by Brendan Hall, finishing in 1st place overall during the last race of leg 7 in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race. Photo by OnEdition. Click on image for photo gallery.

Clipper Finish Kingston-upon-Hull, UK: A spectacular welcome greeted the crews of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they arrived back in Hull at the end of their 35,000-mile circumnavigation.

Tens of thousands of people lined the banks of the Humber and the quayside of Hull Marina to welcome home the crews,

Crossing the finish line overnight at the end of the 14th and final stage of the Clipper 09-10 Race, the Irish entry, Cork, claimed the maximum ten points for securing their second first place of their campaign. It is an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact the team's original yacht ran aground on a reef in the Java Sea in January.

Cork's victory in Race 14 denied Hull & Humber their much coveted home port win but their second place finish did allow the 'big orange boat' to leapfrog Jamaica Lightning Bolt in the final standings to finish fourth overall. Again, a remarkable achievement for the team whose original skipper, Piers Dudin, was med-evac'd by the Japanese Coastguard in the North Pacific after his leg was broken when a huge wave washed him across the deck. Piers joined Justin Taylor, who took over as skipper, and the rest of the Hull & Humber crew on stage to great cheers and applause from the crowds.

Clipper 09-10 champions, Spirit of Australia, finished third in the final stage of the 14-race challenge, minutes ahead of Cape Breton Island, whose performance guaranteed them a place on the final podium. The Canadian team finish third overall, just 1.3 points behind Team Finland.

The ten yachts raced up the Humber in the presentational John Harrison Race, commemorating the man who, in the 18th Century, revolutionised the age of sail by inventing the marine chronometer, a device enabling sailors to accurately plot their longitudinal position. Hull & Humber wowed the crowds with a win while Spirit of Australia flew their spinnaker to the delight of the tens of thousands of spectators.

To date more than 2,000 people have become ocean racers by taking part in the Clipper Race and, of these, more than 300 have achieved the rare accolade of becoming a circumnavigator by racing around the world under sail. Eighty-two new circumnavigators have joined the ranks of this exclusive club following the fleet's arrival in Hull today.

The final result of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race is:

1. Spirit of Australia, 128 points
2. Team Finland, 105.3
3. Cape Breton Island, 104
4. Hull & Humber, 98
5. Jamaica Lightning Bolt, 98
6. Uniquely Singapore, 76
7. Qingdao, 74
8. Cork, 56.8
9. Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, 53
10. California, 42

The Fireball Register
The revised Fireball class website www.fireballsailing.org.uk has now been running for 18 months, and many Fireballers have taken time to register themselves and their boats. So far we have just over 300 Fireballs registered, but with over 15000 boats made, and many of them in the UK thats a bit of a shortfall! Whilst not every one of those boats is still in existence, we are aiming to register up to 1000 or so by the end of 2010. The challenge is set.

Do you have some Fireball's in the dinghy park at your club that aren't being sailed that often? Print of a copy of the how Step by Step Registration guide and post it on your club noticeboard. Or perhaps you could obtain a list of Fireballs at your club and contact them with this information or publish a short article in your club newsletter.

Danish Win Yngling Open European Youth Championship
Lelystad, Netherlands: The Danish sailors Lier, Møller and Floryan, beat the Dutch on their home waters and earned the European title. Conditions were tough, creating a big gap between the leading group and the rest of the fleet. The only American team finished second overall and a Dutch team third.

'It was tough, with those strong winds", says the Danish helm Lucas Lier. Four second places brought them overall victory. Lier continues: 'We were actually quite slow at times, but by staying focused, and keeping our heads cool, we managed to fight back." It was their first time to sail on the Markermeer, a big lake northeast of Amsterdam. 'The water was warm, but we had to get used to the high, short waves. In the beginning the Dutch were much faster, especially downwind, but now we can keep up with them."

For the youth (up to 21) sailors this event was the perfect warming up for the Yngling Open World Championships from 18 until 23 July. 51 teams registered for this event that also takes place on the Markermeer, Lelystad.

Top 3:

1. Lucas Lier, Emil Max Møller en Konrad Floryan (DEN)
2. Torey Pellegrini, Stephen Pellegrini, Kyle Carney (USA)
3. Anne-Christianne Kentgens, Robert-Jan Kentgens, Michel Peulen (NED)

Classic Fleet Assembles in Cowes
The majority of the fleet for the British Classic Yacht Club Panerai Cowes Regatta 2010 has assembled in Cowes Yacht Haven ahead of the scheduled start of racing on Monday 19th July. This unique event, which is now in its ninth year, brings together some of the most beautiful vintage sailing craft for a full week of racing and socialising in Cowes, the spiritual home of classic yachting. This year the regatta has been boosted by its inclusion in 2010 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Series. Sponsored by Italian watch manufacturer Panerai since 2005, this high profile series features many of the world's leading classic yacht regattas, including the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and the Regates Royale, Cannes.

The strong winds which have prevailed in the UK for the last several days resulted in difficult delivery trips for many of the competing boats and the marina this afternoon was buzzing with tails of derring-do from several crews who seemed pleased to have made it to Cowes in more or less one piece. As many as ten of the fifty-five registered entries are still yet to arrive, but classic yacht owners are made of stern stuff and the regatta organisers are very hopeful of all the boats arriving in time to compete on day one.

Racing will take place under the IRC handicap system and the fleet has been sub-divided into four racing classes.

The regatta kicks off on Monday 19th July with racing inside the confines of the Solent. Tuesday 20th July will see the fleet compete in a long distance race, which if weather permits will see them circumnavigate the Isle of Wight. Wednesday 21st July has been designated Challenge Day and offers competing owners the chance to challenge any other yacht bigger than their own to a boat-on-boat match race.

Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd July will see the competitors return to fleet racing to complete the overall series. On Saturday 24th July all yachts are invited to take part in a Parade of Sail to mark the official close of the regatta.

Featured Brokerage
Featured Brokerage Boat 1992 Beneteau First 53/f5, US $300,000. Located in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The Beneteau First 53f5 is the result of a great collaboration between Bruce Farr s design genius and the timeless styling of Pininfarina. This model is one of Beneteau s most successful and they have done incredibly well on both the race course and cruising. This particular yacht is in exceptional condition after having been purchased by her owner in Spain a few years ago and then refitted and continually maintained and upgraded since.

She has a very extensive inventory, including watermaker, and has enjoyed many comfortable cruises with family and friends. On the Asian racing scene she is very well known and has a fine string of excellent results. Her sail wardrobe is huge and all sails are in good condition with many having seen very little use. Rod rigging was tested recently and her electronics are all up to date.
